I've managed to cross-compile OpenSSL for ARMv6 for use with the Android NDK and get it to run within my application. However, when attempting to establish an HTTPS connection to a well-known host (such as https://google.com), I always receive the error "The SSL certificate is invalid."

You will never achieve 100% filtering, unless you pull the cord.
This question provides a nice solution for Ubuntu, and other than a physical firewall to handle that, you most likely won't get anything better than that either.

I'd like some commands to run a script at startup.
However, my default shell is zsh, so the traditional .bash files seems unwise. At the same time, I believe .zshrc is sourced at every shell invocation.
How can I run a command at startup when my default shell is zsh?
How can I make Vim change cursor in different modes so that these conditions are satisfied:
Without using gconftool or such tools. I need this affect only one instance of Vim, not the whole terminal.
This must be working in Gnome Terminal and GVim.

I recently did a search and didn't get a result. That was because I was searching on Ask Ubuntu Meta and not Stack Exchange Meta. Even though the two overlap.
So instead of Ask Ubuntu Meta returning no results it would be more intuitive to also include results from StackExchange Meta. This would...
best not burn your bridges - "Ghost" backup or similar your current hard-drives - at least then you've got a return path if the unlikely event stuff goes wrong.
@OliverSchöning you've been running ubuntu via a USB stick for a couple of days? Best to do this. Experiment with different desktop environments to find one that works best for you.
@fossfreedom I have tried it enough to get it now. I don't have a lot of files to transfer and most on the web. It's fine. Thanks for concern though :P
Do I need to be online for the install ? I read I can update afterwards.
@OliverSchöning During the install it will have a large green tick confirming you've got a internet connection. Best connect both your laptop/pc via a wired connection. If you are installing via USB - the 2Gb is fine.
I'd like to receive e-mail notifications for answers to my questions on askubuntu. I've seen in other questions that there should be a box to tick in the preferences of my account to enable that, but I can't seem to find it.
Here's a screenshot of how it looks for me. What am I missing please?
Just make sure during the installation that you select the mint partition to install within or it will default to creating yet another partition - you'll then have a triple boot - ubuntu/mint/other OS
ahh graphics - bane of everyone life. Depending upon which chipset you have - you may want to consider the proprietary drivers. Remember to update your system to the latest level - there has been a considerable amount of effort to fix bugs in this area since the 12.10 release.
I have build some libraries from sources, and the files after make install are in /usr/local/lib

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
Since version 1:0.9.8+bzr3319-0ubuntu1, compiz/unity keeps messing up my gsettings (keybindings and WM prefs). This was already covered in bug 1042041, but the change there mostly caused the bug to happen consistently now.
At every session startup I have a script to fix my settings like this:
--------------- 8< ----------------
gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences auto-raise
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower "['<Alt>b']"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings maximize "['<Super>Up']"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings unmaximize "['<Super>Down']"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-mode sloppy
--------------- 8< ----------------
But after restarting compiz, it changes the settings to:
--------------- 8< ----------------
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences…
