@Seth Come on, give me a caption at least! :P
GFSE'd.
00:24
@FEichinger I thought you like making the captions.
I'll add one from now on, but feel free to choose anything you want.
Oh, I love doing the captions, but sometimes there is so much to choose from!
lol
I guess so ;)
I bet James Bond has a gadget for favoriting his own questions :P
jrg
jrg
@Seth looks pretty good to me. askubuntu.com/questions/265298/…
I went with "James Bond: Mystile Themes" after ruling out "James Bond: Technical Difficulties"

@FEichinger lol good one :D
@jrg Thanks! I wasn't sure I understood his question exactly..
00:27
But "Bond, Woo Bond" was also a funny one I had in mind.

00:31
so for ones like this, i'm always left wondering if the submitter was just like "ok, i need something funny"
and then they did that.
@jrg I think that's the second one.
Oh, real quick @jrg

Q: What can we do about all the reoccurring spam?

SethI have noticed across SE we are getting a lot of spam, usually titled "WATCH BLAH BLAH BLAH HERE". It is very repetitive, regularly coming in the later afternoon/early evening (pacific time) a few times a week. This is starting to become a problem (on Ask Ubuntu at least) because this spam com...

Dino, Roland and I decided to ask that.

00:58
so personally
just use spam flags
and toss it in the main chat
if everyone dogpiles
even if there is no mod around
you can generally do it
push comes to shove, you can also ping a mod on another site, ask them to act as a proxy to a SE employee
while i don't recommend it, you can do this.

Oh-so-true.
01:54
@vasa1 Yep. I was interested in the xfce.org site and working with that team. Not the Xubuntu stuff. I've already got the docs and wiki pulled into a git repo, so I may end up going that route.

Q: Can I install ubuntu on a Virtualbox image and use it anywhere?

user1632018I am wondering if I install ubuntu once on a virtual machine running inside virtualbox, could I then use it as a portable OS and launch it from virtualbox on any machine? Or would I have to match the hardware of the original host? I am just wondering if it would be smarter to do this or get a l...

Spam:
Hey Hi @Seth .... how u? it seems like we are the only people out here in this chat room... what say??
@Rishee He got autobanned
(I just removed it, the ban was unfounded)
@Seth 6 spam flags on that post and it will disappear
Oh ok... thanks !!
@Manishearth
Oh my.
Why was that?
Links that appeared on the spam?
05:05
@Seth Someone flagged your chat post as spam, and it got marked as valid
Oh my.
Thanks :)
@Rishee Looks like we were :P
@Manishearth Whats up? Did you get called in by the flag?
Yeah, I came to investigate
05:08
@Manishearth Oh OK :)
Before I could mark as invalid, someone else validated it (not sure who -- but the way flags are shown to us can lead to false positives). So I removed the suspension
Here is some more :/ askubuntu.com/q/265358/44179
@Manishearth Well thanks a lot! That really confused me there.
Meh, -6 and -9 but still around :/
I made a meta post on that: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/170740/203389
Added my downvotes + flags
05:23
Thank you @vasa1!
We need more people to flag these.
NP!
Can you do this one too? askubuntu.com/q/265357/44179
so many downvotes, what's preventing them in converting to spam flags
I think people think they aren't eligible to flag? That's why there are more downvotes than flags?
Did that already. Three so far in ~ 10 min.
Hah! We got the first two down! \o/
@Sathya I don't think that happens. Does it?
05:25
@vasa1 no, flagging requires 15 rep , downvotes requires 125 rep
@Seth I meant why don't people use the spam flag option.
probably aren't aware of it
@Sathya, 15/125 what?
@Sathya Yeah, I know. That's why I'm adding comments to the bottom, asking people to flag it.
@Seth I noticed
OK ;)
Then, logically, it should be easier to flag than downvote?
05:28

Q: Should we commment on spam to get it deleted faster?

TakkatRecently I observe that obvious spam often gets far more down votes than spam flags would be needed for community deleting and locking: Should we in case of an obvious spam post leave a comment so that users who don't know about the power of spam-flags will downvote and spam-flag appropriately...

Just FYI
@vasa1 Yes.
@Sathya Well, good luck with the SO elections!
At least these guys are blatant. Others tuck the spam in answers. Ubuntu Forums has their share of those.
@Seth thanks - but I won't be getting through to the final round
@Sathya Oh? Sorry.
@vasa1 Looks like it to me.
@Seth na, that's ok :)
@vasa1 It has the tag. Close it.
05:33
@Seth Voted already
Well I gotta get to bed.
This spam is really getting on my nerves.
Mostly spam ruins my lunch!
lol
I am vegetarian, so no spam for me ;)
Chad isn't as devious as the other guy.
No. He certainly isn't ;)
Well I'm off to bed.

A: What can we do about all the reoccurring spam?

Sathya Help prevent this spam in the first place? There's not much that can be done, honestly. Spammers will spam. IP address blacklists/bans aren't particularly useful because the IP address used by spammers are a huge range & varies a lot. This is leads to a whack-a-mole contest & you end...

What will you dream of?
I removed <br> from one spam post but is it really a good thing to do?
@vasa1 remove the <br/>, don't remove the content

Q: Should we replace the content of spam posts so that they say they are spam?

DragonLordThe user Gareth edited a blatant spam post, replacing it with the following content (the content is now deleted and is visible to 10k users and moderators only): UTTER SPAM Please delete me. I feel that this is superfluous and masks the actual spam content, which a user can readily ide...

@Sathya, yes, that's what Seth did and since he's sleepy/asleep, I did one.
Jeez guys. Just flag the stuff as spam and be done with it. It doesn't live that long on the site. Besides, how else are people going to get their 500 helpful flag badge???
any mod alive?
for AU that is
ohey, @Sathya
should we be blaming YOU for this latest wave of spam? </long standing action of blaming @Sathya ACCEPTED>
06:00
@maggotbrain, we were wondering why most spam posts seem to have fewer flags than downvotes.
@vasa1 because a ton of individuals don't know they can flag just because?
i see it, i instaflag as spam
@vasa1 From my point of view, flagging carries a bit more authority than just downvoting. I know through reviewing posts, I feel a greater responsibility when I flag a post for deletion. Plus, I don't want to get called out on it, as I have been at times.
especially when one chooses to leave an auto-comment.
@maggotbrain I have so many flags that I've done, I don't care when anyone calls me out on it, I say "Well, we all make mistakes, crap happens, tolerate it, don't be calling me out randomly."
@maggotbrain I thought those were only the flags which also carried close votes with them?
as a close-voter guy, I don't see close-reasons as flags anymore, so...
most of my flags are spam identifiers when they're against questions
I'm on a roll recently with flagging answers for vaporization as Not an Answer, though.
@TheLordofTime I do agree with you. Some folks have made me think twice about voting to delete, or close. It's still uncomfortable to have someone publically call you out.
@maggotbrain And that's why everyone knows not to do that for me. Because I bite back :P
06:06
Even though my vote is not the authority on getting a question closed.
... GOSH DARN IT! I almost slipped, and almost wrote in bronyspeak again!
facedesks a few times
i almost did that 14 hours ago, too
geez, this brony virus is pernicious, and evil.
@TheLordofTime the bro-hoof will get you in trouble.
@maggotbrain true, but saying "everypony" instead of "everyone" or "everybody" will get me shot.
06:09
@TheLordofTime That is unfortunate.
unless the intent is to SPECIFICALLY talk in bronyspeak, which I try not to do outside of certain... areas... of the internet.
@maggotbrain And now you know why I've said twice today someone should shoot me for it, and you also now know why i facedesked three times
(I really did facedesk three times)
I think new users don't want to do the wrong thing and a downvote seems more anonymous than a flag, I guess. Since you do get to see which flags are rejected or declined in one's profile.
only as a mod and 10k+ i think can see your flag votes.
@maggotbrain check my profile... askubuntu.com/users/10616/the-lord-of-time
how many flags does it say I have
@TheLordofTime over 9000
stupid meme is stupid, don't do it.

@TheLordofTime so saith the brony ;-P

@JourneymanGeek Ooh. Yet another reason to give Kubuntu a try when my new machine arrives. :D
I just use apt, personally ;p

Q: Is it mandatory to have a variable in awk's first statement?

Aditya PatawariI am having some hard time with awk today. well, crappy hard drive, but otherwise, its a firebreathing gaming machine ;p
@JourneymanGeek I guess it shouldn't matter to me, either. I'm not about to run Kubuntu on my current machine, anyway.
I could dust off my old atom mini ITX
Then again, I don't really have to install Kubuntu just to try Muon, do I? Maybe I'll give it a try on my netbook, as an experiment. :o

I am trying to pipe a string to espeak function from a python file like this [ foo.py | espeak --stdin ] , the contents of foo.py are this [ def foo(): return 'foo' foo() ] (with proper indentation), but it doesnt work ? any clue why this may not be working
I wanna order a DVD with all of the Defcon talks
@Tomarinator have you created a question on the site?
13:07
suggest you do so.
I dont already have an account on askubuntu, and to connect to a new site on the SO network , i need to be on a firewall free connection, so I am out of luck, i guess
@Tomarinator huh? why is your firewall blocking you from creating an account?
I dont know dude, when i try to login to the site (askubuntu.com) , it just hangs, even though i am on a high speeed network, and nothing is reported in the console as well.
your firewall or a corporate firewall? if former - just disable it.
Probably a https connection that isn't greenlighted.
13:12
its a college firewall thingy.
weird ... time to roll-down to your local internet cafe then just so you can create your AU account :/
@Tomarinator VPN! :P
13:34
I got it to work. had to print foo() instead to calling foo()
and also in function foo() print 'foo' instead of returning 'foo'
Going to try to catch a train... finally.
@jokerdino @AmithKK strange unity-tweak-tool is still stuck in NEW queue
And one thing: Did you guys get the packaging version wrong?
ah thanks. i didnt check the queue today.
@smartboyhw nope.
@jokerdino OK. But anyways, it's just stuck
@jokerdino It's a verge article, nuff said! :P
13:53
And FF has already passed
@jokerdino go and try asking on #ubuntu-release on IRC
@FEichinger :P kidding.
@smartboyhw i asked about FF and they say it doesn't matter
@jokerdino The more weird thing is just that it was stuck
it awaits review from archive admins.

Q: Why does askubuntu meta show to few reputation points?

AndreasI know this question belongs in the meta section, but, have a look: I wanted to post a question in the ask ubuntu meta page, but it said I need at least 5 reputation points in ask ubuntu main, and it said that I have 4. But, I actually have 19 points. What is going on?

Should go to meta.
