@AmithKK thanks for learning qt5 for the team.
@GeorgeEdison oh okay.
O_O
I'm in 10th from tomorrow
oh my god :P
@AmithKK ok
will perma ban you on request.
15:37
@jokerdino I will learn it anyhow :P
@AmithKK we are probably going to use it now that unity-next is in the pipeline
$sudo apt-get install -fy self-control
unity-tweak-tool-qt
how's that?
@jokerdino - with the effective dumping of compiz - you'll probably need a rewrite anyway :(
ooooh
jeez, i forgot everything about that bit
jrg
jrg
15:57
oh man, if only i could turn off thedmz's stupid chat event alerts
same. the weekly writer thing? what's up with that?
jrg
jrg
no clue
i haven't seen an organized chat cast around these things ever
i never been in a chat cast before. So, idk.
And UDS. Starts today.
jrg
jrg
yeah, can't make UDS.
@fossfreedom Oh lol
@jokerdino You are supposed to be there
16:05
@AmithKK you are assigned to it. thanks!
@AmithKK nope. it's online
16:29

Three Rings For the Elven Kings of the Sky
Seven for the Dwarf Lords in their Halls of Stone
Nine for Mortal Men Doomed to Die
One for the Dark Lord on his Dark Throne
In the Land of Mordor, where the Shadows lie
One Ring to Rule them All
One Ring to Find them
One Ring to Bring them All
And in the Darkness Bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie
16:54
Ok @guntbert @jokerdino @jrg @Seth How many of you want automatic mirroring of the pro forma comments from the answer?
Hmm?
I dont get it. Please explain.
Ok, so we have these answers:
43
Q: What prewritten Pro-forma userscript comments can we use and share?

Octavian DamieanI'd like to gather a list of boilerplate comments for Ask Ubuntu which can be used in combination with the awesome Pro-forma comments userscript. Post suggestions too, you are not required to use the script. Please wrap your comments into a code-block for easier copying.

so, someone adds a new answer, and it reaches a certain vote threshold , it auto merges it into the pro forma script.
not a bad idea. but how many really use it for anyone to invest that much work?
I don't think it would be that hard
So the flow would be like
Init SE.API
Check for edits on answers on that q
apply edits via a parser(The ans follows a format)
then check for new ones
not worth the effort, imo
16:58
:P
Ok :P
So, anything else site maintenance related?
What? you want to do something about the site?
i had some ideas. let me see if i can recall them
timepass :P
@AmithKK, well without any further measures that would lead to "comment bloat", so that solution should have a removal too - but that might make some unhappy, when their favourite comment suddenly vanishes.... so I tend to agree with @jokerdino.
@guntbert good point
2 down. 0 up
@AmithKK well, in that case, i want to generate a list of questions that remain unanswered at the end of the week.
17:04
Movement taken
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK no.
gah no.
not ok
@jokerdino Explain?
any question that is not answered in a particular week. give me that list at the weekend every week.
Ok, asker1 asks question on monday
it's then sunday
and then it's still unanswered
it'll come in the list
yeah, something like that.
17:06
Hmm
Let's see if the API can handle data at that scale
More or less the job of an SQL query to the live server
up to you how you want to go about doing it.
ok, will plan :P
BBT
Good Night
@AmithKK I second @jokerdino, not worth the work I'm afraid...
I know @MarcoCeppi and @jrg were discussing the git script recently...
jrg
jrg
that was somewhat related, but also not
17:21
shrug
@jokerdino, don't we have such a thing already? I get a mail from AskUbuntu with interesting/unanswered questions every week.
@guntbert that's a newsletter and it doesn't exactly serve my purpose.
@jokerdino ack, I was thinking about the algorithm/code
I dont think we have the code to that.
23
Q: What is the difference between gksudo and gksu?

SidIs there any difference between the behavior of gksu foo and gksudo foo? Can they be used interchangeably?

@guntbert --^
17:29
@Seth, thx, dismiss my edit then :-)
@guntbert Already did ;-)
17:59
@Seth may I bother you? I edited askubuntu.com/questions/264349/…, but forgot to remove the first sentence "My apologies ...". If I edit it again it looks like artificially creating rep... :-)
jrg
jrg
I need a way to make my fan run fast.
@guntbert Done.
28
Q: How to control fan speed?

GrizzLyHow can i control fan speed? On windows there is wonderful program called speedfan.

Or (to fix the underlying issue): Get a better driver.
@Seth thx
jrg
jrg
found a youtube video
fan1: 2889 RPM
yay
3
@guntbert np :)
jrg
jrg
18:06
took 3 videos to get it to run.
@jrg :O
jrg
jrg
i just cleaned it.
Desktop?
jrg
jrg
laptop
Oh, I bet that was fun.
jrg
jrg
18:07
yes.
easy != fun
jrg
jrg
well, i haven't hit 3K rpm yet
so i'd say that's a success.
> TL;DR summary: Monthly updates are harmful, monthly images are cool, let's do the latter without turning them into the former and all frolick happily in fields of time, money, and cheesecake.
man, I <3 that opening email.
> hey look, a buzzword, you won't hold it against me, right?
oh man, this is awesome.
(for those who want to read it, it's a good one - lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2013-March/036798.html )

Q: problems patching a python file

32bitfloatI'm trying to update a plugin for quod libet. I fetched a .patch-file from here. I navigate into the directory where the plugin is placed /usr/share/pyshared/quodlibet/plugins/events and copy in the .patch-file. Then I run the command sudo patch -b notify.py new-notify-plugin.patch w...

19:40
@FEichinger Code Academy now does PHP..
I might actually do that.
Since the Python just doesn't work :/
AHH. Its the same guy. Eric Weinstein.
sigh
20:26
Hey @Flabricorn, how is your dad doing?
He knows he can install Cinnamon on a regular Ubuntu install right?
@Seth Oh, he switched to a Lubuntu install (and I did too after using it a bit.)
@Flabricorn Oh, OK.
Lubuntu is fast
that's for sure.
I know, I don't care for the eye candy of KDE as much as I appreciate the speed with Lubuntu.
Yeah, KDE's eye candy really slows it down sometimes.
I don't like Openbox so much, so I just use Unity/Cinnamon
For me it depends on the computer, Lubuntu looks best here, but Cinnamon would be my choice for the macbook.
20:32
Hmm. I never thought about it that way.
Makes sense though.
@Seth Now this is gonna be fun. As in, ripping it to shreds.
@FEichinger In what way? Injecting?
I'd think they would guard against that
No. Pointing out probably obvious flaws in Weinstein's courses.
Oh, yeah, please do.
I've had to skip several :(
I think I'm even gonna screencap it with a voiceover.
20:39
Oh wow.
What is the correct way to pass multiply arguments to a function in python?
I'm trying to figure out if I'm doing it wrong, or if this is a bug..
I figured it out.
hiya everyone
hides
21:00
drags @Seth out
gives @Seth a dollar
A dollar?
For what?
absolutely no reason whatsoever.
Oh. :)
@Aditya I'm glad you caught that last edit ;) Was tricky one.
@TheLordofTime Well if you hadn't given me the dollar I'd have done something... else. :P
IKR
21:22
@Seth What edit you are talking about? I am completely clueless!!!
whoa, a mod is around...
@Aditya The one you rejected. Sorry.
Yes that one.
@Seth :)
Is a moderator around?
Now this is awesome: codecademy.com/tracks/apis
Just hope they'll get Gmaps on there soon...
21:52
@Seth Video done.
Rendering right now, gonna rerender it to a different format and then probably youtube it.
There's something in there that's probably a surprise to a lot of people - it was to me at least.
... Well, so much for that.
Murphy's Law just killed it.
Sometimes, I really hate computers.
This is one of those days.
Anyways, boils down to 20 minutes of "Will this finally evaluate, for god's sake?" and "This is bloody awful formatting." and "Why didn't you explain this?! Makes no sense to me! That would probably be very confusing to newbies!"
And a lot of "Why would you do this?!"
But it's a nice course. Looks great for introducing people to PHP, at least.
22:08
@FEichinger Well, I'll try to wade through it.
Like I said, I've had to skip some python..
But overall its nice.
@GeorgeEdison If I run eclipse + cassandra, 4G appears to be too less.
22:20
o/
So it looks like there is no free Git client for Android.
That's what people like you are for :P
4
...and nothing that can push / commit.
On a sidenote (if you know Ruby): codecademy.com/tracks/oauth
@Seth: Yeah, I'm tempted to write one.
(I'm using my Android phone ATM.)
(So typing is a little slower.)
Okay ;)
Is it a no go @FEichinger?
22:25
Step 1: cross-compile Git for ARM.
22:36
I keep getting a 500 error.
@Seth yes
@soandos You can access it, or you get a 500 error?
@Seth I can access it
Lemme try again.
If anyone is on ubuntu now, would they mind pasting the output of gcc -v?
22:46
Ah, works now. Thanks @soandos.
(just need to know what the target is)
@Seth no problem
:8379912 Using built-in specs.
COLLECT_GCC=gcc
COLLECT_LTO_WRAPPER=/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.7/lto-wrapper
Target: x86_64-linux-gnu
Configured with: ../src/configure -v --with-pkgversion='Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1' --with-bugurl=file:///usr/share/doc/gcc-4.7/README.Bugs --enable-languages=c,c++,go,fortran,objc,obj-c++ --prefix=/usr --program-suffix=-4.7 --enable-shared --enable-linker-build-id --with-system-zlib --libexecdir=/usr/lib --without-included-gettext --enable-threads=posix --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/include/c++/4.7 --libdir=/usr/lib --enable-nls --with-sysroot=/ --enable
That's what I get.
Don't know if it'll help or not.
jrg
jrg
@Seth yes, i can get to skydrive API
it tells me I have a problem
not sure how to fix it
@jrg Strange... I'm getting the error again.
They are just bouncing today.
jrg
jrg
22:48
i can load that page
But then, I'm a beta tester, so that could be it.
jrg
jrg
well, didn't try anything, just loaded the page. :P
Anyone know how to get gcc to realize at build time (when building the compiler) that I am ubuntu machine (as opposed to unknown linux)?
23:00
Dupe (of something): askubuntu.com/q/264481/44179
@jrg This guy is spamming a link:

A: Wireshark capture only packet from and to my PC when in promiscuous mode

Steve Metzlerhttp://www.dickson.me.uk/2012/09/17/installing-wireshark-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts/ This guy shows a step by step procedure that worked for me running 12.10.

A: Setting up wireshark for non root user

Steve Metzlerhttp://www.dickson.me.uk/2012/09/17/installing-wireshark-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts/ Maybe this will help...I'm trying to get the help functions to work, guess I'll ask that in another question.

A: wireshark installing

Steve Metzlerhttp://www.dickson.me.uk/2012/09/17/installing-wireshark-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts/ This is a step by step setup if your interested...

I have no idea what happened there, but each link goes to the same place...
23:20
Back now.
(I've got an RDP session to my Kubuntu machine running on Android.)
(I'm typing with my Bluetooth keyboard.)
Anyone got jorge castro's email or LP account name on hand?
i need to drop him an email
also, hello.
Lol, that was fast.
ohey there you are jorge
@JorgeCastro are you subscribed to hte bugcontrol ML?
Apparently they have an x86 emulator in the Play store that's reportedly capable of running Windows 95.
23:31
yeah, I am
@JorgeCastro your attention is required on a email thread RE: an applicant, first name Brandon. Latest response by Omer Akram.
i can forward you the details on IRC if you want (remind me your IRC nick if that's the case)
got it! Thanks!
yep.
@JorgeCastro confirm that I"m right, though: someone other than themself upstream would need to vouch for the applicant's bug triaging abilities, right?
actually, Jorge, if you wouldnt mind, give me a ping on IRC in privmsg, TheLordOfTime
i have a couple of concerns I'd like to discuss with ya first.
23:53
@Seth Huh? What?
