Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2013

Grace NoteAs it is December 2012, we are now going to reset our Community Promotion Ads for the new year. What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar. The purpose of this question is the vetting pro...

hey everyone the new Community ads have reset ^
@mateo_salta thanks for pointing that out ;)
I made a new add for NitroShare, hope GeorgeEdison likes it
@mateo_salta I like it better
What do I do about this?

Q: Using desktop edition as file server/ftp (mac, windows compatible)

Carl TuttonI have a couple of problems, and a couple of goals. goals install ubuntu desktop edition and get apache running use as file server for house, over simple LAN gigabit switch use a dynamic IP tracker to update hostname and continue to update (last time it crashed repeatedly) be able to access fr...

he's asking like four or five questions at once...
hm, I think the main one is setting up a file server that can be accessed by mac/windows
agreed.
01:10
not sure if he wants options, or what
I think he just hasn't done some research on how to use apache
the main frame is: installed Ubuntu, Apache and dyn Updater, but can't access machine.
wants to use Ubuntu Desktop not server because he sometimes wants to play games
01:24
Evening all.
hi, @GeorgeEdison I made a new nitroshare add for the community ads.
glad you like it.
@mateo_salta added a comment to the post, asking user to keep it to one concise question. just FYI
@iSeth sounds good, since it's not clear if he wants to fix the crashing problem, or connecting, or just get setup tips.
01:37
@mateo_salta exactly. glad you think its good ;)
01:47
@jrg Replied. I will be getting a phone to replace what has recently gone missing soon. Perhaps this will make communication despite AFK easier to operate soon.
jrg
jrg
02:36
@Flabricorn ok, cool. R&R
@Flabricorn sent my phone number too, just so you can call me if we go forward.
@jrg Okay, I'm running Google Voice too.
jrg
jrg
@Flabricorn ironically, that's what my phone # is. :P
Thought you had the Palm Pixie?
jrg
jrg
google voice + dumb phone with full keyboard and notes = awesome.
also, re: going in on an email server. i just need a domain and $100 and i'll do it.
should keep us running for about 3 months.
Which dumbphone?
Oh... money.
jrg
jrg
02:41
well, it's the palm pixie, but i'm cheap and don't do a dataplan.
I wish I could do that, darn companies roping me into a contract. I'm thinking Motorola Q9c.
jrg
jrg
win mobile 6?! dude!
that looks pretty slick.
It's the best of the worst so far.
jrg
jrg
oh no. :(
Is it cheap? Yes. Is the operating system modifiable? To an extent. Does it have a keyboard? Eh, good enough. Does it have WiFi? No.
jrg
jrg
02:45
AHHHG to that last one
But in the end, I have a laptop, and the use of WiFi on a device like that isn't worth it. I can get a microsd wifi card that will work if need be.
jrg
jrg
oh, true.
ebay.com/itm/Motorola-MOTO-Q9c-Black-Verizon-Smartphone-/… - With case, charger(s) and within an affordable price range.
Update it, see what I can do with the OS, and then maybe it'll all be worth it. I also have a better chance of modifying anything than with the KIN.
jrg
jrg
also true.
So, maybe there's a port of linux, :) I mean there is for the DS.
jrg
jrg
02:48
i decided that my phone is just that, a phone, so i don't bother tinkering with it.
so uh, @Flabricorn. come up with a domain name for a shared email and i'll buy it, get the vps and run with it.
My problem is that I can't accept that something is just something. I need to mess around with it, or keep it at default everything. Desktop environments drive me insane in that way.
@jrg I might need a while before, 'y know, money.
jrg
jrg
@Flabricorn i should have enough by the end of the month to run us for ~3 months, at that point we can talk. or maybe split 4 or 5 ways by then.
Ooooo, email without companies mining my info. Love it.
@Flabricorn nah, just hosting companies :P
jrg
jrg
@iSeth i trust say, linode more than i trust google (for most things).
02:54
Wait, I have a greendoorgames webmail for the GreenGeeks hosting company already...
jrg
jrg
wow, i hadn't heard of those guys
@jrg yeah, anybody that really gives you a bandwidth and storage limit is better than unlimited...
They've been pretty good, I've made a few web pages that way.
jrg
jrg
oh, hangon, let me upload this video to youtube. give me a second.
@Flabricorn what carrier are you gonna use w/ that phone?
jrg
jrg
03:00
localhost... wish I had one of those...
jrg
jrg
yes you do.
ping 127.0.0.1
@iSeth Already locked in with Verizon. I'm out in April, but it's better not to be phoneless until then.
jrg
jrg
@Flabricorn good luck getting out. i'd prefer to go with anyone other than ATT
@jrg well sure, but I meant a real server to host things
jrg
jrg
03:02
OMG THEY DEPLOYED AN EASTER EGG!
DID YOU SEE THAT?
The stackexchange sled!
jrg
jrg
YES!
@iSeth, it was cool and you missed it therefore you are lame.
:(
03:04
@iSeth Droid 2? Sounds great, but with the "locked in" part, I'm trying to avoid a data plan.
@Flabricorn oh yeah... I forgot
Otherwise I'd have another two years on my hands and more to pay monthly.
ATT doesn't lock you in if you buy the phone full price (or ebay)
ah well...
jrg
jrg
@Flabricorn i wonder if there is a single carrier that the EFF would recommend...
@jrg PagePlus looked alright.
jrg
jrg
03:05
that's the way to do it - prepaid, anonymous, disposable phones.
You can activate any device with that network.
It's the top pick as of now for what to do when I can abandon verizon.
jrg
jrg
are they GSM based? i can't find anything there
this is awesome, if you can afford the startup cost
Dunno much, but wherever I went to research phones, it was the most recommended for something that won't jip you.
03:08
@iSeth That looks awesome!
@Flabricorn :D
BTW you didn't have me in mind when you said this did you?!?! You must have. (jk)
brb
Heh. :)
jrg
jrg
drools that republic wireless thing looks awesome.
Actually, the concept of a phone being nothing more than communication sounds inspiring. Perhaps the Razr V3 shall be my choice. Sounds more reliable, considering the people who have them, or had them wish they could trade in the iPhone for one. But then I have the person who actually has one, and it's broken...
jrg
jrg
if i had the opportunity of re-doing my phone, i'd stay the way i am.
i might have gone for a different phone with longer battery life, but i'd keep the setup. calling + unlimited texting = $15/month, and it works.
03:12
lol
Of course, you chose wisely OpenWebOS, (is that what you're running?) seems to work.
@Flabricorn: if you wanted a reliable phone for just phoning, get a old nokia ;p
jrg
jrg
I chose webOS, but it can't run the open webos version.
@jrg Aww.
jrg
jrg
anyway, i'm out. talk to you later folks. :)
03:14
@JourneymanGeek Crossed my mind, but I realized I remember owning one, and I broke it.
@Flabricorn: I have an old 1210 for use when the military calls me in for reservist
+1 anything WebOS
3 week battery life (granted, mostly standby) and almost unbreakable
@JourneymanGeek Oooo, shiny.
@JourneymanGeek I remember when my parents used 1100b's
actually still have one
dual sim is awesome... that is on the 1210
03:18
I don't think the one I have has dual sim
@JourneymanGeek awe :(
B-but, dual sim?

1 hour later…
04:47
Quiet night.
Day...
Morning.
Wherever you may be.
@Flabricorn Good night!
Night here.
@GeorgeEdison Cya
05:06
BTW @GeorgeEdison I don't know when you'll get this, but the Stack Applet version 1.5 (which I got off your site) still doesn't work. It looks for askubuntu.com/users/iSeth but the correct url is askubuntu.com/users/44179/iseth
just FYI
I couldn't find a newer version.
For Windows or Linux?
1.5.1 is the newest release.
Linux
Did you restart the application after updating?
yes, and reinstalled (just to make sure)
I used the .deb package, could that be the problem?
It shouldn't make a difference.
05:12
I got it now
I was on the wrong launchpad page, did a little looking around and found another link to 1.5.1
had to re-add accounts, but it works now
didn't mean to wake you up
off to bed now
Don't worry - it's only 9 here.

3 hours later…
07:48
YES! the Anime & Manga Private Beta will be open soon! I shall aim to be a Mod! (I think -- if I can). I also got another silver badge! Happy time for Miss. Mochan!

@Flabricorn You sound like an Apple fanboy~ :P
09:19
@Mochan: They force me to use one at work.
How does this F19 key even work?

09:35
@Mochan !?
@smartboyhw LOL I know right!
Well, I am a woman. (Not a Mother... or a mother-to-be, actually...) but yeah! Go feminism! :D
@Mochan .....
@smartboyhw wut
What are you dotting at, huh?
@Mochan The idea itself
@smartboyhw What's wrong with it, may I ask, dear sir?
09:37
@Mochan nothing nothing wrong
@smartboyhw .___.
It gon' be a scaaaary place boy...
@smartboyhw I have a fear that it will never get to execute because... SE is mainly made up of guys, right?
one word. And for your sanity's sake do not look this up
mpreg
/me hides.
@JourneymanGeek HM. -looks up-
hehehe wanna know my reaction? :3

2 hours later…
11:31
Not an answer? It's another question, right? I've flagged it, but I wanted to double check ;)
Chat room is dead!

11:43
@Mochan not an answer. They obviously have no idea what an SMBus is.

Q: Logged into ubuntu via VNC. Windows key seems stuck

Murray WatersI have an ubuntu server running vnc4server and gnome-session. When i log in remotely using VNC, it appears that the windows key is stuck. This occurs with multiple VNC clients (ultraVNC/realVNC on windows) and I have tried it on other boxes. Having the windows key stuck effectively disables usi...

Why on Earth is askubuntu in maintenance?;(
jrg
jrg
working fine for me
Y U NOT MAINTAIN FOR MODS?
We are currently offline for maintenance

Routine maintenance usually takes less than an hour. If this turns into an extended outage, we will post details on the blog.
Hmm
jrg
jrg
loading fine, it's a little slow, but it loads.
yeah same maintenance issue here. I was pinged on a comment. I am soooo curious ;)
jrg
jrg
14:01
i'm afraid to do anything with the flags though, since they will probably get rolled back.
oh - back now... short outage hopefully.
jrg
jrg
And yes: we know #stackoverflow
We're aware of the #stackoverflow instability, the servers are running under extremely heavy load and will be more stable in a few minutes.
and now it says it's offline.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If I keep refreshing, it'll work.
jrg

@MarcoCeppi Joy to the world!

@RolandiXor-TheIceMan Hi
I connected to find out, how can access remote xubuntu2 machine, where x11vnc is running from another xubuntu1 machine using remote desktop viewer. I have ssh access to remote machine. Also both machines are in the same local network.
I"m a bit new with x11vnc, so what I've done, I've installed x11vnc on remote machine, then done steps from this answer: askubuntu.com/a/118645/12185
I've started x11vnc on remote machine through standard way taken from here: help.ubuntu.com/community/VNC/Servers#x11vnc
which is: sudo x11vnc -ncache 10 -safer -localhost -nopw -accept popup:0 -once -viewonly -display :0
I've started remote desktop viewer on my current machine. Set protocol: vnc; hostname: remoteHost:5900
After I pressed connect, it prints out "connection to host remoteHost was closed"
But probably I will be able to find an answer for this on my own.
Have a nice day
15:24
@JavaLearner There quite a decent tutorial from the developers: karlrunge.com/x11vnc

Q: Possible invalid move to meta

NanneI was looking at this question: Are Ubuntu One and AskUbuntu linked in anyway? and while I am not quite sure what the questions is about, the question isn't about askubuntu per se, is it? I mean, it doesn't seem a meta-question to me.The title could be interpreted as something about askUbuntu, ...

Q: Closed As Duplicate OF WHAT?

LinuxPCplus Possible Duplicate: Where is the link to the original question when a question is closed as a duplicate? If you close a question as an exact duplicate, include a link to the question it duplicates. That way the person can find an answer! Most people only ask a question because they can...

funny how that question is already closed as duplicate
sometimes I think we need to have a big flashing pointy arrow to say "look here - its a dupe"
lol it already autoredirects if you don't have an account.
and i think it is big enough. I don't know how people keep missing it >_>
@jokerdino and I think that your answer is very clear, with that big target pointing the link, is just an amazing reply.. :-)

Good Night

@AmithKK cya
@Lucio lol :P

greetings to alive people ...
I am undead.

@geoh nap means take a short sleep.

oh thanks @iSeth
hey I just saw @fossfreedom go away in a sled :P
17:10
Little problem, trying to install icedtea, I run configure, it says configure: error: Could not find CUPS library; install CUPS. but I have the packet cups installed
is anyoe who leavs the room gone like that
@geoh only for the holidays ;)
cool :D
what is the CUPS library exactly?
from the first search: CUPS is the standards-based, open source printing system developed by Apple Inc. for OS® X and other UNIX®-like operating systems.
17:13
@cyril Can you tell us what icedtea it?
some library to read java applet on your browser
oh, OK
without it I can't
huh, works for me
browse this applet ^ (I have lubuntu 12.04, Chrome)
17:15
oh, firefox automatically gets the plugins I need.
that's the only way where firefox can be better
17:34
anyone know cool irc channels??
jrg
jrg
#ubuntu, if you're on-topic. ;)
@iSeth mwahahahha. :D
@jrg :D
jrg
jrg
and people wonder why i do all my company/product/legal research via tor. :P
anyone ever tell a virtual machine that the connected VGA display is theirs?
(in virtualbox)
@jrg haha, I couldn't get tor to work on Ubuntu, then Windows flagged it as a trojan and I was done.
jrg
jrg
how can you possibly not get it to work?
it's a simple shell scrip that starts a custom firefox. :P
17:45
I didn't know how to run make back then...
jrg
jrg
they have a tarball that "just works"
hmmm I'll check it out again
heard of these people? I use that too
jrg
jrg
Windows, the only way I can handle it: in a VM.
Ghostery is a bit paranoid for my tastes, but it does very little good for me now. :(
download the browser bundle, it'll work
I wish I had VM power... esp now that I have a computer that can handle it
jrg
jrg
i'm doing a powerpoint tomorrow, so i'm going to have my windows vm full-screen on the external monitor, and use powerpoint viewer.
should work without a problem.
17:49
wow tor is very different now
I must of downloaded the source back then
@jrg what u work as??
jrg
jrg
@geoh i'm a student, full time. part time, I do IT work for a local company, build a small business empire of 1, and do odd jobs for friend.
i'm doing the odd jobs tomorrow.
love the 'business empire of 1' lol
jrg
jrg
hey, it might be a small business empire of 2 by the end of next year. depends on if i can get the cash I'd like.
and by that, i mean I need $200. :P
@jrg sell your legos!

17:53
@iSeth Never.

FYI I gotta run now

this is what I see (and get the java applet working)
it worked for me... but I am on Windows XP
k
it should work with firefox, but I'm lazy to install it
17:58
@cyril how the heck are we supposed to read that? it isn't even in English...
@Joshua just the popup alert thing ( Java plugin is necessary to display some elements Install plugin)
Yeah what does it say?

Q: how to type linear algebra symbols

James AndinoHow do I type the symbols for linear algebra on ubuntu? Are there any programs that use them? ( I understand this is trivial basket weaving. Whats the fastest way! ) Does any one think that http://redis.io/commands Would this be an interesting open source project?
