oh, @Flabricorn - idk if you're interested, but if you want to write about Linux 2buntu is looking for writers. always are. :)
@jrg BTW where will you announce hats? I can't find a blog or anything the the rest of the SE sites
jrg
jrg
@iSeth we will announce hats on meta.askubuntu.com when they become available.
no word yet as to when that will be.
@jrg Ok, so no blog?
As in, we don't have one
jrg
jrg
@iSeth oh, stackexchange will write a blog post about it for network-wide...
someone will blog about it on their personal blog and get it pushed out to the ubuntu planet... probably.
but ask ubuntu itself doesn't have a blog.
OK thats what I wanted to know

@Mahesh Hello
hi..
so, exams over?
Nah
just came back from tutions
hmm...
mechanig just got a decent style. yesterday.
What would be the besy ubuntu laptop under 30k?
Preferably Dell
07:23
I'll recomend asus.
way more cheaper than dell, and it works out of the box, usually.
avoid hp. I've had enough bad experiences with it.
07:58
@AmithKK Preferaby not Dell?
I guess
They create cheap products that don't last.
something that runs unity out of the box would be nice
Out of the box?
unity almost always runs out of the box.
08:00
Asus is great, the eeepc 900 I got was working fine out of the box when I was working on it.
somedevices may trouble you with wifi, or graphics card, or suspend/resume or hibernate/resume.
if it hibernates and suspends properly, and resumes, go for it. Asus, it usually works. Hp, usually doesn't work. Dell, it works, and they have excellent customer service, but still, I fell its overpriced.
I don't want to pay the windows tax
Windows tax?
then go for asus. they happily give you a device with freedos. dell and hp , good luck getting a no-windows system. :P
08:05
Ah.
Do I sound like I'm marketing Asus? :/
I see, yeah skip Dell, HP is not for Linux, but Asus works. Just skip Acer, they have worse product quality than Dell.
never tried acer.
@Mahesh A little, but for all the laptop users out here that want something freedo as you put it.
Ok Asus Transformer Prime is the only one?
08:06
lenovo is okay. my friend has one, and uses it with no probs.
sony, heavily overpriced for thr brand name. nothing great.
Oh, but they're a tad bit on the expensive size.
And Sony. Nope.
Never used them, don't intend to.
@jrg Tell these game happy freaks to get out of my house, it's almost three and there is no time to make a game.

Q: Has rep required to edit questions been increased?

JamesThe other night I suggested several edits to remove the word "Ubuntu" from titles as was suggested in a tip here. Now, edit is faded out under questions for me and tells me "Account is not allowed to suggest edits". If I go under my account and select privileges, when I hover over "edit question...

Q: Is an Ubuntu Phone OS being developed or are plans limited to Ubuntu For Android?

Vagrant232Things is getting a bit confusing. There are posts on blogs and websites about an Ubuntu Phone OS, which is a phone that runs on an Ubuntu OS solely. There are plenty of designs out there for Unity adapted to a smartphone. However, the only reference to phones on the Ubuntu website is the Ubuntu ...

Q: Should questions about Nexus 7 be off-topic?

fossfreedomQuestions about the Ubuntu installation on Nexus 7 are starting to appear on AskUbuntu such as this: How to Enable Wireless on Nexus 7 Given that Canonical themselves have pitched the Nexus 7 as a development goal for 13.04 - should we as a community treat Nexus 7 questions similar to Alpha &...

kinda confused on what that even says.
are we considering them offtopic?
(I don't see a definite "yes" or "no")
The consensus is on-topic, but only the people that handle the mobile tag will be reading it. Most of the other people think it's mixed bag or clog questions.
people like me you mean.

20:47
I don't see what a phone question has to do with the nexus 7
jrg
jrg
@LordofTime it's more of a unicorn question.
@JorgeCastro The direction I was taking was "there are plans for a real ubu-phone" so the question seems legit
jrg
jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing the answer to this question is "They've said yes, but they haven't released anything"
now if only there was a working ubu-phone/ubu-tablet i would feel like this:
jrg
jrg
and unless you have root access to launchpad and want to find their private repo, that's about all you can give them. :P
20:51
@jrg Isnt the question about a future-release / unannounced-features thing?
@jrg if so doesn't that fall into the void of offtopicness here?
@AbrahamVanHelpsing hehe, the kitty is being sucked into the carnivorous ceiling! :P
@jrg i'm no sabdfl so i don't have root ;)
jrg
jrg
no, canonical has said that they are doing stuff. They just haven't announced specifics. It's different than say, "when will wayland ship", because well, they've tried to ship wayland like 10 times now.
and so far they haven't. :P
or rather, let me put it this way: Vote as you see fit. It will make its way into the review, and then other people will have the chance to look at it.
we haven't really tried to ship wayland, there's not much to ship
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro stop putting it on the roadmap then, and then not doing it! :P
(i'm just picking on the wayland one because most of us know about it - i honestly don't care if wayland ships, X works nicely.)

i wonder if any other apps are trying the maximize over the size of a single screen like blender does
jrg
jrg
i've seen apps where their minimum size is bigger than anything i've ever owned. cough thunderbird preference window cough
i more meant how blender tries to size itself to the desktop geometry not the screen/single monitor geometry
jrg
jrg
oh, ok. i haven't seen that.
if you have a multi-monitor system the initial window size is enough to span all monitors
good idea for some applications

@Jrg pretty sure you had edit rights before the site had suggested edits

jrg
@JorgeCastro no, i suggested my 100 edits, got my 200 rep, and then shortly thereafter i got my 2K.
jrg
jrg
jrg had 200 edit suggestions approved, and 6 edit suggestions rejected.
you rejected like 3 of my edits in a row, and i was edit locked for almost two weeks or something.

Q: Gigabit network connection in Ubuntu issue with new hardware

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Yes. I believe you know my secret identity...

in hindsight, probably wasn't worth it. 1.6GHZ CPU, meh. 4GB ram, it works. the GPU is what I was really interested in it for.
that and the 15" display. :P

So guys I tried out the Ubuntu GNOME respin 12.10.
user19161
And I have to say, it just kept freezing on me.
user19161
It happened at least 4 times. I had to reboot manually.
22:52
@WillHunting Did you have good GPU drivers?
user19161
I guess it will be better in 13.04.
@jrg stick with intel - you cant go wrong.
user19161
@iSeth Well, not great hardware but decent. No problem using Fedora.
@WillHunting probably not GPU then
jrg
jrg
22:53
@fossfreedom In my defense, I was young. and it performs much better at john the ripper than my intel box. :P
@WillHunting Hey, I just watched that movie a couple days ago.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: 16s.us/16crack/defcon_2012 is this plausible?
22:55
what the one-man cracking team? sure. the guys that win every year don't win because of high powered hardware. they win because of patterning
jrg
jrg
hm. interesting. given a big enough sample of data, patterns emerge. same goes for wordlists.
user19161
I guess when Ubuntu GNOME becomes more stable it will become an official derivative.
jrg
jrg
in the meantime, download mainline and then do sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ;)
user19161
@jrg Sorry bro, I am using Debian now. =)
...hm, looks like I need to re-setup all the keys and stuff for launchpad, any way to resetup that with information from launchpad for a different machine, or just make new?
22:58
Its funny: people complain about unity "We hate unity, we hate unity" We say fine go use GNOME. They come running back: "We want unity, we want unity!"
Nope. They want Mint.
openbox ftw. but i still put desktop files in things so they work with unity
cinnamon is an abomination

That's like 2 years old.

@jokerdino Yes, thanks to I forgot who.
is there a debian/ubuntu policy on softlinking things to another location in opt once they're installed properly in usr/share or usr/lib?
jrg
jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing i don't know. might be a good question for the site.
23:11
example /opt/wordlists/dnsenum.dns.txt...so if i make dnsenum or some other thing a "proper" package i can still have a pretty straightforward place to put wordlists used by different tools and whatnot?

i guess it could be a good question for the site
jrg
jrg
ugh. it's the same with every distro except for fedora/ubuntu/SUSE: I boot the VM, and then it's like "oh, we didn't tell you how to install network drivers."
even the BSDs i've used do it. particularly the BSDs. :P
RAGE
it shouldn't be this hard. Things that basic should just work. :(
FreeBSD had network driver install easily last time I checked.

Q: Is there a debian/ubuntu policy on softlinking things to another location in opt once they're installed?

AbrahamVanHelpsingIs there a debian/ubuntu policy on softlinking things to another location in opt once they're installed properly in usr/share or usr/lib? Here's a simple example: Packaging up dnsenum. It's a REALLY simple package (4 files). A perl script, two wordlists, and a readme. So from what I gather...

I have a sneaking suspicion the answer will be to make a wordlists package that pulls in all the others as dependencies and create softlinks in the separate package
also, square enix needs to port their modified UT engine to pure opengl
23:29
back
o/ @fossfreedom
i'm happy - my rhythmbox PPA has reached 100,000 downloads. Cool!
5
\o/ - how many different plug-ins do you have in there now?
dunno - lost count.
just uploading one more.
27 plugins now.
okay. i've started chipping away at making proper packages out of all the stuff that got jammed in to backtrack. i'm trying to find a way to make the stuff "comply" but still be as convenient so it's like "install another distro? why not just add that ppa?"
good job on the 27 plug-ins
23:34
how many packages you are you facing to-do?
lots. the really funny part is the menu system seems clogged in BT, but when you dedupe it it's a quarter that many packages.
sounds like a big job - all GPL packages?
thc-ipv6 for example provides a load of tools. or maltego appears in a half dozen categories type of thing.

mostly. they're *almost* all free to redist as long as you don't change them. about half of the tools are a single script or a couple of scripts
and yes. it's a big-ish job, but take for example the dns category. two of them are already in repo, one is in thc-ipv6 that someone already debianized and left on github, two of them are java and occur in multiple categories(saving for last), and the remaining ones are simple one-file scripts.
23:51
I feel like a secret agent every time I do the launchpad SSH PGP stuff.
3
i feel like an idiot every time i have to remove a key because the box it was on got nuked and add another one
yep, that happened to me.
back and running now, now I can bzr nitroshare!
bzr is bizzare. it's probably that i haven't used it enough, but it just seems really odd
jrg
jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah, same here.
i've got like 10 GPG keys. hopefully i won't run into this problem anymore, have double truecrypt backups on separate USB keys.
i've still got the laptop keys, but the desktop? i don't think i'm going to revive it
23:58
so far it seems similar to git to me, probably because I've only been doing simple stuff like getting the source code with it...
i got used to git more than bzr now
