Ok, i'll shoot it over tomorrow morning. The git host is locked down.
Got it.
00:11
thats actually really good - and will help you since it provides the same thing ootb that my vagrant file would.
Thanks! This is awesome!

Hi
Need some support
0
Q: Setting up "update-notifier-common", flash plugin-installer stop

DaveCheck it out, waiting more than 10 minutes and nothing. Running Ubuntu 12.10.

ohh, no need anymore
it finally started
I think there are some problems with Italy servers
@dave, it takes time for flash to download
jrg
jrg
@flabricorn: So yeah, hackety kind of sucks on Windows.
And @lazyPower, i don't think he has enough power to run a vagrant VM, but it might be worth a shot.
um, @flabricorn, i'm still working on getting some bettter windows instructions. while the storm (and power outage) has put a spanner in the works for this, I intended to have something usable out the door by this time next week. if i get power back in the next 48 hours, that might happen, otherwise it'll be another week. :P
same goes for sidekiq support for that gem I mentioned earlier @lazyPower. :)
01:01
@jrg vagrant on a vm?
uhh, vm in a vm? you talking vmception over there bro?
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower vagrant is a VM manager. his computers were about as powerful as a netbook last I checked - aka, not very.
yeah -- but a 320mb ram consumption machine, if he's not running a ton of business in the background he should do fine
i ran it on my Aspire 1 with 1gb of ram just fine.
it wasn't the snappiest thing in the universe, but far better than running ruby native.. on that platform.
i dunno, ymmv
@jrg <3
Isn't this off topic? askubuntu.com/q/201956/8500
jrg
jrg
what has possessed George that he sold Star Wars?!!! AHHHHHHHHG. MY WORLD IS COLLAPSING.
Coming from someone who has read 90% of the extended universe that extends 40 years after Episode 6, the movie will suck if Han, Leia and Luke are still the major players. Now, if they did I, Jedi as a movie, or the X-Wing series, well... thats another story. :S
@psusi looked at it, seems fine to me. well, sorta.
@jrg, it has nothing to do with Ubuntu?
jrg
jrg
01:14
@psusi it appears to have been caused by Ubuntu, thus making it on-topic.
or at least more so than some of the other questions we get around here.
@jrg, not likely
jrg
jrg
two people experienced the problem while installing ubuntu. i think that means this is a ubuntu problem.
or at least a undocumented user error problem that people only encounter when installing ubuntu.
even if it is, wouldn't that be a bug report and thus, off topic?
jrg
jrg
i can't judge the bug-reportness of that.
Me: "My favorite color is red."
CleverBot: "Mine too."

@GeorgeEdison it just needs a PRAM zap. #Buzzwords
Me: "You are dumb."
CleverBot: "What am I?"
Things are getting worse...
jrg
jrg
mwahaha.
Even worse:
Me: "What is the tenth letter of the alphabet?"
CleverBot: "It is the letter 'e'."
Double facepalm...
jrg
jrg
Hello.
Are you ok?
I'm fine, you?.
Thats good.
@GeorgeEdison install emacs and talk to the doctor.
he always makes you feel better.
i'm too cheap to afford a shrink - so i just wait for emacs to start on my laptop, then I talk to it. zing!
lol
emacs makes a great everything, including psycotherapist ;)
01:23
@jrg thanks for responding to my question on iMessage
@GeorgeEdison i hooked that up into a hubot today at work.
jrg
jrg
@Joshua i don't have access to iMessages. Just text me: 216-223-8574
Oh, no more iphone touch?
jrg
jrg
and now you all have my number. Cue the justin bieber prank calls from @rlemon again.
No, just no wifi because the power is out.
oh power is out over there?
Come hang out with the lazy power @jrg, i've got full services and a spare room. bring the family!
01:25
@jrg oh..
@lazyPower That bot is so dumb that it borders on hilarious.
I was just wondering if I could borrow your glasses tomorrow... I need a pair of wire framed glasses?
jrg
jrg
has been out for 11 hours now. I'm just trollin' AU chat on my limited 3G plan. If we don't get power back by noon tomorrow, i'm packing all my stuff and moving into work for the rest of the week. :P
@jrg: Psssst. You forgot to change your avatar on Disqus :)
@GeorgeEdison that was the idea ;) you probably started with a clean slate though - and its realy ignorant with a clean slate. It was fairly observant via the api. I asked it the speed velocity of an unladen swallow. and it asked "African or European?"
01:26
@lazyPower Oh you mean it learns as it goes?
Now that is nice.
yeah, its nothing more than a statistical probability bot
it looks at keywords, and runs a matching algorithm
@jrg yeah I so glad I have unlimited data...
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison psst. i'l add that to my todo-list and do that when I get the chance. ;)
hang on i'll enable guest access and shoot you a link
Oh speaking of the power going out...
01:26
you can talk to him via my hubot :)
my power went out then came back on... and now my all in one printer/scanner/copier won't turn on :-(
www.hipchat.com/g97RPSSaY
for anyone that wants to join in on the fun while the access is there :)
jrg
jrg
anyway, night gentlemen. I will chat with you later. don't go flagging things, Yannis wasn't happy last time. ;)
Good night...
jrg
jrg
01:28
@lazyPower: Speaking of hipchat, would a self-hosted hipchat-like thing be useful? I'm looking for cough another cough project to take on...
i'm already working on it ;)
jrg
jrg
something you could run on heroku.
going to replace it with our in house chat app powered by node and some ruby
hipchat is fine for now though, i just dont like the idea of everything going through their servers. Atlassian has really borked it since they took it over
jrg
jrg
so many software as a service type things out there that need self-hosted solutions, so little time and money to spend pursuing them... :(
@Joshua but yeah, if you want to talk, text me. iMessages will probably be useless for another day or three. :P
aright cool
jrg
jrg
01:31
closes window, shuts down computer
@jrg good luck with the electricity
jrg
jrg
@Joshua i don't need luck. I make my own. I'll have my siblings run inside hamster wheels tomorrow. ;)
lol...
Don't forget to give them treats
whoa.. any suggestions on how to salvage this mess: askubuntu.com/q/209876/8500
@psusi that is a mess...wth?
01:43
@Joshua, mess too kind of a word?
frantic statements from someone who doesnt yet understand whats going on under the hood. We should edit, and help
WHAT???!?!? HELP!!@
oh no, not you too
its gone viral! i can no longer help, its airborne.
lol :P
holds jokerdino down save yourselves!
01:47
I installed emacs. :|
why'd you swap os's?
I was checking how bad it was compared to vim.
@lazyPower only funny cause its true ;)
@psusi fixed
@jrg ohh they will be coming. I don't even care about the long distance this will be too good.
@JourneymanGeek, that is fixed? It is still a train wreak of bad grammar, bad spelling, and fails to ask an understandable question or really describe what is wrong
01:59
@psusi: wierd, you mean the edit waiting for an approval is still a trainwreck?
I think at his skill level, the safest thing is to copy /home nuke and pave
He just pushed an edit I guess
@JourneymanGeek, ahh, didn't see that, much better
still leaves much out but at least doesn't make my skin crawl ;)
@psusi: I just put the information thats already there
also, let me know if my answer is wrong, I'm a little out of touch with ubuntu
(yes yes, I know, for shame. I'll be getting a GUI ubuntu install up soon)
02:17
hehe
Creates granular tag and suggests tag wiki edit.
02:39
lol
555 rep on AU
yay
sheez, how do i add a cron task for a python script?
@jokerdino: I'd guess open it explicitly?
python script.py
> 43 * * * * /home/jokerdino/bin/timediff.py # JOB_ID_2
it's an executable?
python is ;p
and I think a properly crafted .py file is, if its set as one
i chmod +x it

Q: Re-upvoting comments

gh403Out of curiosity, why can't we re-upvote comments after upvoting and removing the upvote? As there aren't any penalties or rewards, I was just wondering, why the seemingly arbitrary limitation?

03:43
@jokerdino is it OT?

Q: video drivers change to default setting on reboot

VivianHi I am using windows XP PRO 2002 SP 2, Mainboard : MSI K8MM-V (MS-7142) Chipset : VIA K8M800 (VT8380) after I have run the display driver VIA/s3G unichrome pro igp, it takes and display is ok, but when I reboot it take the previous setting and says default monitor on. Let me know to correct ...

Aliiiiiiive \o/ Hi
Oh noes - someone created tons of eepad so-and-so-type tags including wikis... :/
Oh dear ;A;
Tags cant be killed. There are numerous zombie tags around.
Also some tend to reappear... is it Halloween soon?
LOL. Today in Australia.
Ubuntu 12.11. Halloween Edition - all Metro ;)
screams
Actually, 12.10.1
07:11
worse. it looks like windows 8 with the zune orange theme ;)
Because Halloween isn't in November. But anyway, I have a terminal question
@JourneymanGeek ~(>,<)~
@Mochan: it isn't dead, its pining for the fjords
@JourneymanGeek LOL
go ahead ;p
ObsessiveFOSS hates Python. :O
07:13
I could use the mental gymnastics
to each according to his measure, to each according to his need ;p
I doubt you'll need to. It's easy.
I just wanted to get a quick idea on how I'd execute something like ./install in terminal
pretty much like that
unless you mean what its doing
./ = run a script, install is just a shell script that ... installs
because the . is meaning like 'in this folder'?
ahh
wait, I will need to look that up
I remember it being something like that. But basically to run it, I'd hop into the directory it's in and just go ./foo
07:22

Q: Whats does this command mean in Unix?

JohnnyWhat does it mean in Unix when you use . ./<filename>? Thanks for the help

(most likely install. INSTALL in my case)
more likely ./configure
then make then make install
Yeah. True. But mine's INSTALL. I'm downloading Faenza.
ahh
you can see what it actually does by opening it in nano or something ;p
Screw this. APT FTW
Oh fail.
07:31
apt is better
Sure is. Got it done in a flash. I wonder how I apply Faenza. I'll try Gnome Tweak
Here's a Halloween Icon Theme for Xfce
@JourneymanGeek I have no idea what ObsessiveFOSS is talking about. We do have function definitions.
def name(parameters)?
@Mochan: c does it differently, you need to initiate variable first, and do functions at the end
or something
LOL
07:49
Hey, I just discovered some interesting icons in GitHub Markdown.
Though I'll never know why you would need to use this in a comment:
Oh well.
08:36
morning yall
08:55
@StefanoPalazzo good morning!
@BrunoPereira good morning too :)
could I ask one of you two a question related to AU?
Yeah sure
@StefanoPalazzo I was reviewing a few answers earlier and I accidentally flagged the answer to askubuntu.com/questions/204797/blinking-curser-at-login#206525 because I just read "I have the same problem too" I reread the whole thing afterwards and realised it did in fact answer the question, is there any way to 'unflag' or remove my flag? Because it's a valid answer and I was just jumped to a conclusion :P
@Oyibo Thanks! I removed the flag
@StefanoPalazzo ah thanks a bunch! Didn't want to accidentally get a valid and useful answer taken off the site ;)
09:11
The flags are reviewed by humans anyway, so its no peoblem. Thanks for helping :)
@StefanoPalazzo I should be thanking you for helping me :D have a pleasant day!

2 hours later…
11:03
Waaaah that chat room is dead again?!
Oooh~
which one? QUICK, GET THE CATTLE PROD! GET THE FISH TO DO FISH TO MOUTH RESUSITATION!
It's alive!!
@JourneymanGeek LOL
ya, that generally tends to do that
and if the fish dosen't work, we can always trout someone
11:05
(^o^)/
LOL
Mochan still hasn't done her homework or watched Week 6 videos. That also means that I have not even glanced at A3.
not done week 6 either
you DO know they extended everything a week, right?
I know. But it can't hurt to start a week earlier. I still don't intend to, but whatever.
@StefanoPalazzo o/
lol
same here
I can get this weeks lectures done in a week or so
I read through the notes, and vaguely have an idea how to carry on
I'll probably have them done by Friday if I can be bothered. It's a sad thing, really - I watch the videos on my iPod touch and lie down on the couch while watching. That usually leaves little old me snoring. (Well, not really. I don't snore)
@JourneymanGeek I don't read the notes. I probably should. And since I watch via my iPod, I don't do the quizzes either.
@Mochan: was reading the notes cause I didn't have any time between the interview and class ;p
then I was sick all of yesterday
and I mean frigging in bed the entire day except dog-walkies and eaties.
11:11
@JourneymanGeek LOL. It's probably a good idea, but the whole video would have been more beneficial. Probably.
ya, gonna do them
but I have some idea how to do parts of the assignments
its all about the flow ;)
Awh. I remember that you were sick. Are you feeling any better?
ya
though I nearly got caught in the rain again
I told you, @JourneymanGeek. I have none of your 'flow'. It makes no sense to me.
mom just got back and was sick
11:12
:(
@Mochan: basically even before you code, understand how to solve the problem
I'm installing Ubuntu on my USB. \(*O*)/
for a proper coder, this is psudocode. I see it as a sort of flowchart. I have A, I need B, what do I need
@Mochan: unetbootin-ish install or a proper one
@JourneymanGeek What the heck is unetbootin? The full install.
I wanted a portable OS :3
thing that puts the iso + a 4 gig persistant partition in a drive
11:15
@JourneymanGeek Shrug. I want to use it like a hard drive, boot off it, and make it load a normal, desktop OS.
@Mochan: oh well, give it a shot
I've done that before too ;p
@JourneymanGeek I think I did do that, technically.
hmm
maybe ;p
no one actually directly installs ubuntu to a drive
$deity knows why
@JourneymanGeek Wow, really? How? I'm trying to do mine through wubi.exe in Windows. Am I stupid?
er...
you DO NOT want to use wubi for that
since it won't do the bootloader right
11:16
Oh fun. I am stupid.
I wouldn't call you stupid
I'd say you're in a period of naive experimentation
-.-
and no, I didn't even think of doing that
probably cause wubi and ubuntu didn't exist in my 'complete idiot' phase of linux
Good luck @JourneymanGeek.
11:19
Why do I try to do the hardest things when I am only a noob?
@jokerdino Thanks, bro. Loyalty.
@Mochan You'll make it bro.
@jokerdino Doubt it. I plan to pick @JourneymanGeek's brain anyway.
I'll send Kan your way.
So how did you install Ubuntu to a USB, @JourneymanGeek, @kan?
@jokerdino I thought he wasn't on.
He isn't.
11:20
-.-
Everything works fine when I try enough.
Never.
Why do you need a portable OS?
Because I'm weird.
I believe you will need to tell it what ISO to use
or it will download one for you
also works for bootstrapping linux installs from windows
@JourneymanGeek Don't, I have one.
I don't want a live USB though. I want my stuff to be there when I unplug and still be there when I reboot or use on a different PC.
11:23
I mean, you will need to point it at an ISO manually ;p
yes yes
select persistance, you can set a 4gb 'image' for that
Oh. I did that, though.
With testdrive, on Linux. With @Takkat's advice.
@JourneymanGeek Like... selecting it from a filesystem?
ya, as opposed to picking a pre-installed option
@Mochan pang
@Takkat pangity pong
its been a while but its pretty simple
11:27
Did your VBox recognize your USB finally?
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I did that. Didn't I, @Takkat! :3
@Takkat Nuuuupe
Still being a whale of fail, fail whale, whatever.
No USB drive means no install to it :"(
ASGAHFGHWKB WHY?!
Eugh. VMs suck. ;A;
//has never actually successfully ran a VM
If only I could remember how or why my VBox recognized my USB drive so easily... aged brains are of little use
what are we talking about here?
11:30
@BrunoPereira I'm trying to directly install Ubuntu to a USB stick, with no avail. Want me to fill you in completely?
@Takkat Like that
I am not sure how exactly you can get stuck with that set of instructions o.O
@Mochan but the system will be installed to a usb plugged to a vbox?
@jokerdino Virtual Machine does not recognize my USB (3.0)
@BrunoPereira No, Virtual Box does not detect my USB. It just says 'no USBs inserted' (similar)
11:32
USB 3.0 sigh.
Besides, did you expect me to get this right?
one thing is install Ubuntu directly to a USB, another is to install Ubuntu to a USB to be booted in a vbox
@Mochan using the non special license version of vbox?
@BrunoPereira Nope, I'm using the closed-source option. Should I try the awesome way of doing it?
@BrunoPereira I think the thing was to boot it in vbox, then install it directly to a USB with vbox
@Mochan: Is your USB formatted?
11:35
@JourneymanGeek Ooh?
I've done that off a real system before
didn't know it was portable though
It is, I've done that
@Mochan ha! that is what I was trying to explain: you cant, normally. You need to create a raw disk, mount your usb pointing to the usb /dev path and tell vbox to use the raw disk
(if I got your idea right)
@Takkat It's FAT32.
@BrunoPereira Probably. I have no idea, and am no experienced - as you can probably tell XD

Q: changing the partition of a linux

user654019I have a ubuntu system as a virtual system on Virtual Box. It uses VHD as its hard disk. I manged to change the size of VHD using VHD resizer, now I want to expand the partition on vhd so it uses the expanded size. How can I do this?

11:37
Do you think this (^) came up because we were using 'vm' and 'vbox' and 'Virtual Machine' here?
This is coincidence - I hope.
LOL
asus-eeepad-tf101, asus-eeepad-tf201, asus-eeepad-tf700
Don't you hate it when you find a typo and it's too late to edit? //cries
need even more specific tags.

naw, stack exchange is becoming self aware.

Oh noes - someone created tons of eepad so-and-so-type tags including wikis... :/
~(`q`)~ ham
@Takkat +1
@Takkat it's annoying :(
they are just looking for edit rep after 2k.
We should be able to kill them, but we cant
11:41
Brutal
they self delete after a while
delete the tags, get a mod to talk to them
NO NO NO! IT'S CALLED TORTURE, PEOPLE!
@BrunoPereira :P
we also have a htc-desire-hd2 and htc-desire-x, etc
@BrunoPereira ty
11:43
why can't we just synonimize them to htc or something? :(
that might work, still needs mod support
Should there even be tags for products?

Q: CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

f.mcleashI installed Ubunto 12.10 and at first when i go to chech the system informations i used to have ( unknown ) on the graphic card section , i used the synaptic manager and downloaded the fglrx , after that i restarted my laptop and now i dont have any menus , all of them are gone. now i am only usi...

I like him.
@Mochan Did you tick the "Enable USB Controller" in the USB settings from your live install virtual machine?
@jokerdino Sarcasm is wonderful
@Takkat Say what?
11:44
He dare misspells Ubuntu.
@jokerdino He dare misspells everything in the English language.
Almost
I'll brb
he must be from...
oh wait, I am wrong ;p
@Mochan What. You created a VM for live install before you put in your .iso. There you also need to go to USB settings to enable it.
@Takkat I'll check. I think I did.
Back, FWIW.
@Takkat Turns out I didn't. Kill me now.
WAITWAITWAIT! I'M NOT STUPID! Still doesn't work! Nehehehhe (why am I happy? ._.)
@Mochan my fault. I could have mentioned it in the tutorial... Need to edit this in (later today)
@Mochan Why???
11:50
@Takkat That's my question to you :3
@Mochan: try with a filter: askubuntu.com/a/209972/3940
If your lucky an empty filter may already do the job....
If you are Mochan it may not even work with filters.
But you need to still be lucky!
LOL! Well, I am Mochan, so...
Why cant we have anti-aliasing on window corners in Unity? ... Unity is too slow! I hate it!
(sounds logical)
@Takkat But, when I have call lsusb or whatever, I can find my USB, but I don't know which my Vendor and Product ID is. Is the Vendor 'SanDisk Corp' or a number? :O
@BrunoPereira I have no idea what anti-aliasing corners are. Are they when the close, minimize and maximize buttons hide?
@Mochan its something like 0a5c:2145 or so...
11:56
@Mochan Fancy roundness graphical trick to make edges pretty
@Takkat 0781:5572
@BrunoPereira Practicality to the max.
Try it. Can't damage anything.
*Facepalm*
@Takkat But is that the Vendor or Product ID? >:P
Wasnt it Compiz that always lead to a Catch the Snail desktop experience?
@Takkat Compiz sucks.
11:59
@Mochan yeah, it may be vendor:product or product:vendor (old brains...)
@Takkat -.- I hope it's vendor:product
