@RolandTaylor: No, he's now part of the borg, his only mission in live is to extend, embrace and extinguish
Roland you will be glad to know I just bought it.
00:24
@Joshua What, W8?
There is also hope for me, about my Ubuntu-on-tablet dream~
Nnnngg the chat is so dead. I'm leaving. Wah >o<
00:40
Trying to flash Android to a device that doesn't have support and probably never will, is no fun at all.
@Mochan yes Windows 8
00:57
@Joshua good morning, no your comment was okay.
@msPeachy Hi, cool I am glad :-D
@Joshua It looks like I can just enter my Vista product key when preparing to create the installation media... I think.
um... actually...
@GeorgeEdison I found out that is you are using the preview, it won't work...
What won't work?
What you can do though is download Windows 7, install it (without activating) then use the upgrade assistant...
The upgrade assistant will tell you that there is no version available for your region...
or at least that is what it did to me...
01:01
ooh, the old update a non valid install trick?
@Joshua Wait... Windows 7?
I have Vista.
Also, Digital River has the Vista ISO files... I could use those.
@GeorgeEdison then use vista I don't care, I am just telling you what worked for me :-P
But in the end it is all the same... once you make the install media (usb, dvd) you are golden and can install it anywhere
Okay.
I wonder if applying LZMA compression to RAW files is work the trouble...
I'm getting a compression ration of about 3:2.
01:48
hey everyone. does anyone know if the kernel bug which caused batteries to be drawn really fast has been solved yet ? should we tell users to use pcie_aspm=force?
no idea. i can't really test it since my laptop battery is OLD and doesn't hold a charge anyway
02:31
Hi all
That's funny, I say hi and two people leave.
I brushed my teeth less than an hour ago!
02:44
why do people keep upvoting non-answer answers?!?

A: "dpkg was interrupted error" when installing any application

Ryszarddid not help me, here is what i got: jacek@jacek-Dimension-C521 ~ $ sudo dpkg --configure -a [sudo] password for jacek: dpkg: error: dpkg status database is locked by another process jacek@jacek-Dimension-C521 ~ $ What now???

@RolandTaylor if you didn't keep eating people then your breath wouldn't smell so bad...
@Joshua I don't actually eat people, I only say that so I sound weird.
lies!
I've seen you do it!
It was an illusion :>
I hope Steam for Linux isn't a glorified Wine app like Google Picasa/Earth was...
02:49
Nah it's native.
thank GOD!
Dude!
I'm rendering in Blender, using Firefox with about 15 tabs, listening to music, using Ubuntu Tweak, and editing my software sources - and this system isn't even bothered slightly!
3
specs ?
1.8Ghz Core2Duo, 4GB 666mhz DDR2 RAM (IIRC), 160GB HDD (forgot the RPM), ATI Radeon 3450 (IIRC)
@RolandTaylor my computer at work still trumps you...
03:01
@Joshua yeah well at least... I am happy :P
If only I had a time machine. I would definitely not buy this laptop :( ati card destroyed my life
@RolandTaylor good point :-D
I am not happy however, because my computer can't come home with me....
@Suhaib lol
(not at you, but at how you said it)
@Joshua :>
03:29
@Joshua Polly not, considering its already a glorified webapp ;p
(its built around webkit IIRC)
what is a glorified webapp?
basically everything you see in steam is HTML
inside a specially crafted web browser
DoR
DoR
@RolandTaylor Wait, Steam for Linux is actually happening?
so, no, there's no reason for wine
@DoR: ya
03:33
/me is guessing you lot will at least have source games
@JourneymanGeek true, which is why I don't see why it is so slow too lol
@RolandTaylor: to port?
They probably already have it done, problem is getting games for it
@JourneymanGeek oh... I was more specifically referring to the games... I know that the client is a glorified web browser...
they'd need to port games over, and thats not really trivial
@JourneymanGeek no, I mean why it is so slow on Wine
even the native version is said to be slow by some people
03:38
ohh
no idea then
03:49
@JourneymanGeek i think they're referring to the probable release of three steam games at UDS from a link someone posted earlier
serious sam 3, portal, and tf2
Launchpad just tripped over my daily build recipe.
The blog post is on SE blog.
Right... but it's being advertised on the Unix.SE site.
Well, it's even on Ask Ubuntu.
there's a linux competition every day called making free computing easier...just saying

@jokerdino did you see that tshirt? i thought you might get a kick out of it
@AbrahamVanHelpsing lol it was funny.
04:40
quick question...how did google rank mapquest over google-maps?
L....ol?
DoR
DoR
Good way to avoid getting sued
Okay seriously, how can I edit questions with pending edits?
improve them?
You didn't get it.
04:43
Quick question... I'm developing an HTTP server in Qt and I'm going to turn it into a reusable component. I need a name and QHttpServer is out. (Plus it needs to start with a 'q'.)
libquack
or QuackLib :P
@jokerdino thanks, I didn't think of that
QGEHttpServer? just put your initials/handle initials on it
i was thinking whether or not to expose that workaround.
04:46
the only thing, okay maybe not the only thing but, java does right is the com.example.library naming convention
@jokerdino hmm
@RolandTaylor i decided it doesn't matter.
appears
Time for lunch. BYE!
04:53
:(
:D
Bye @jokerdino
@RolandTaylor ATI Radeon 3450? Is that PCI-e?
@GeorgeEdison Qngn
What does 'ngn' represent?
@GeorgeEdison Engine
05:09
@AmithKK yeah
I've got a 4 GB OS X disk image for X-Code... why???
05:27
@RolandTaylor You play world of goo, correct?
@AmithKK not really
I just read it over when I'm bored and not busy, on rare occasions.
It's pretty fun :P
Linux should have more games like this

o/ g'day all
@Takkat Hello :)
o/ first day with snow here today.
Nice :D
That depends. My heart stilll feels like summer. That's why I get so confused when looking out to see all is covered in white. Confusion breaks my heart.
08:07
Anyone know where I can get lots of information on weathering?
like 15-20 pages worth?
Weathering: the process of creating all kind of weathers in places different from HOME ;)
Must.Complete.All.Projects
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soils and minerals as well as artificial materials through contact with the Earth's atmosphere, biota and waters. Weathering occurs in situ, or "with no movement", and thus should not be confused with erosion, which involves the movement of rocks and minerals by agents such as water, ice, snow, wind and gravity. Two important classifications of weathering processes exist – physical and chemical weathering. Mechanical or physical weathering involves the breakdown of rocks and soils through direct contact with atmospheric conditions, such as he...
lolz
09:24
Anyone know of any collage makers on Ubuntu?
@AmithKK Inkscape for the win
09:49
@Takkat At home?
There's my new project for the day :p
^ video of it in action :p
Probably will need to get a USB hub from somewhere though.
But first I should probably fully charge it.
@NiekBergman You have a Nexus 7?!
Awesome
Wishes I have one
@NiekBergman You already got the OTG cable, right?
10:05
@A
@AmithKK: yes, a Samsung branded one for my Galaxy SIII
But it also seems to work fine with Nexus 7 :)
Samsung gives them out?
Nope.
I bought one.
Even before I had the N7.
First going to fully charge the N7 before I flash it (it's currently at 40%)
Don't want it to run out of battery during the install ;)
44% now -- this thing charges darn fast.
Guess that's why it has a 2 amp charger ;)
10:30
Heh lol
\o/ HACK ALL THE THINGS
:)
I'll let you know how it goes :)
awesome \o/ :P
@NiekBergman Offtopic: Are you running CyanogenMod10 on your Galaxy SIII?
Nope.
Just basic stock.

Is someone able to answer this basic finding-the-mounting-point -question?
I am pretty sure it is somewhere in /dev/.*
Hm, don't have a SGT.
But maybe it's using one of those weird protocols... did anything under .gvfs in your home directory pop up?
cd ~/.gvfs
ls
Maybe it's there? :)
That is, if it auto-mounted...

Q: How to get an email notification when a USB storage device is inserted?

karthick87We are running more than 600 Ubuntu systems in our company. It is a data centre so we have certain policies. We have disabled the usage of storage devices in all the Ubuntu systems. However we would like to configure email alerts. If someone inserts storage devices, we should get an email Alert w...

Is there a way to find users charging their mobile phones ???
There we go! Installing Ubuntu :p
@karthick87: tricky. If the mobile phone is set to charge only, no.
Hm, yeah, I don't think there's an easy way of detecting devices which only use the charge pins and not the data pins.
But generally, you shouldn't be worried much about those ;)
I've had USB cables which didn't have the data pins connected, which almost led me to believe my phone was broken.
But it was the darn cable.
Thats not a problem, but its our data centre policy.. Fine will keep checking for a solution :)
when all else fails, physical protection ;)
11:20
Will this send a notification, if i relocate the storage driver to some other place than the default ???
hmm
I wonder if you can use inotifycron with /dev
that would detect any changes to /dev, which you could then use to trigger an elert
what is inotifycron ?? and how do i use it?? Could you tell me, so that i can test it right away...
my bad
inocron
one moment pulling up the webpage
I do belive its standard in ubuntu systems.
I do not understand. How do i use it to get notification on usb device usage??
11:46
Woot... second stage install starting on the Nexus 7 :)
We have installed Nexus 5 last month :)
@karthick87: basically you find something in the filesystem which reacts to a USB device being used, and tie into that
12:07
Wooooo.
Ubuntu is working on the Nexus 7.
Except for a few minor issues, it's looking awesome so far ;)
@JourneymanGeek could you paste me the script for the same here..
@karthick87: don't have one handy. I just know it might be an option.
Possible to customize the current one??
#!/bin/bash

(sleep 0.5; echo "MAIL FROM: [email protected]"; sleep 0.5; \
echo "RCPT TO: [email protected]"; sleep 0.5; \
echo "DATA"; sleep 0.5; \
echo "Subject: Storage Device Alert"; sleep 0.5; \
echo ""; sleep 0.5; \
echo "USB inserted at $(date)"; sleep 0.5; \
echo "System: $HOSTNAME"; sleep 0.5; \
echo "User: $(users | tr " " "\n" | sort | uniq | tr "\n" " ")"; sleep 0.5; \
echo "IP was: $(ip -4 addr show `route -n | grep -m1 ^0.0.0.0 | awk '{print $8}'` | tail -1 | grep -oP -m 1 "\d+\.\d+\.\d+\.\d+(?=\/)")"; sleep 0.5; \

no idea. I mostly trigger off scripts for fun, and not enough profit, I don't write em

@ఆగస్ట్ reversal of serial upvotes.
16:22
serial upvotes ?? you mean duplicate profiles and doing some odd work
It means that someone else massively upvoted that person. This was detected by the System and these votes were removed .

16:27

@RolandTaylor So, you have a overheating AC? :P
@RolandTaylor yeah when i first me you here , you post something funny that , your ubuntu gt by cat or something . at that time i thought that you asking some help and i suggest you to post a question and you gave me a reply with smile :)

jrg
jrg
pfft. you'll do that in due time.
@RolandTaylor: You never answered my direct message. Did the hurricane hit you hard? Or is my tropical geography completely out of whack?
16:46
there really should be a way to do a clean install and tell the installation media to ignore /opt without having it on a separate partition (you can say keep home, but i haven't seen a way to ignore opt)
@jrg When did you send that message and where?
I missed a few messages in the past week
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor twitter direct message, which normally gets sent to email.
but please do answer my question. :)
Speaking of which - I need to set up Gwibber on here

Q: How to recover/reset forgotten Gnome Keyring Password?

nitstormI am on Ubuntu 11.04 and I have forgotten the password for my Gnome Keyring (yes, stupid me, I know). Any way I can get it back? I have already looked at this link, but it says it's not possible if my home directory is encrypted and unfortunately my home directory is encrypted.

A: How can I stop being prompted to unlock the 'default' keyring on boot?

Marcel StimbergBe warned that this will make your keyring accessible without a password. Period. You don't have to be logged in to view it With that being said, I think the simplest way is to set the password for the keyring to an empty password -- you will not be prompted for a password then: Open Applicat...

Got the filesystem drivers! Now to see if I can flash android... no luck so far.
Anyone here familiar with gstreamer and (hopefully) using Brasero 3.6?
i use k3b, but i answered a couple of questions on gstreamer...
cool
I'm trying to burn CDs with Brasero from the Gnome PPA, but it semes not to be able to load mp3 files
17:35
you're trying to burn as audio not data? they might be trying to port to pygi and there are some issues with media info querying.

Q: How do I use the Discoverer module with pygi GstPbutils?

just an example of how people can't get it to work properly atm
Oh :/
Yeah that's the problem I have
I need to burn as audio, so I'll use K3b indeed :P
i got it a step closer to working, but it was just moving the error so i deleted the partial answer
ofc you can see the deleted answer...so you see what i mean
