@Mochan so you use windows???? :P
@devav2 No, I fail so much that the BSOD appears on Ubuntu. LOL.
@JourneymanGeek @Takkat @devav2 @A.S. @AmithKK @Mahesh @ObsessiveSSOℲ PREVIEWS: LIKE/DISLIKE?
Let's get this room alive again :))
@Mochan Ubuntu has PSON only. (Purple Screen of Noob)
Hi all
@Takkat LOL
@Takkat o/
pson sounds vaguely rude
11:08
@JourneymanGeek :PP
I'm so bored. Entertain me.
@Mochan Make the blue screen different colours! That's be a challenge ;)
@Takkat Challenge != entertainment
But a rainbow screen of life would be fun.
11:11
@Takkat But making it do that != fun ;A;
Laziness. I thought we discussed this XP
@Mochan: my dad finished the assignment this morning... he was like "17 is enough.... " then he coded it again "18 is enough" ....
then he went at it again
mom was all rolleyes
@JourneymanGeek What did he get in the end?
@JourneymanGeek I got 18 because the last one had a name error :P
After that was corrected, I got 22/24
about 20,000 attempts later, 24/24
11:12
lol
What the man lacks in technique, he makes up for in sheer brute force.
@JourneymanGeek WOW FANTASTIC BABY~ sorry, K-Pop reference DX
@Mochan: Thats what SHE said.
@JourneymanGeek If you can't win them, beat them.
@JourneymanGeek >.>
BTW it's not sarcastic :PP
;p
eh, I did the darned is valid function THREE DIFFERENT WAYS ;p
11:14

Another quote from that song is "BOOM SHAKA LAKA" XDDD
brb
@Mahesh o/
@Mahesh , @Jokerdino , @AmithKK - are you guys around?
@fossfreedom I think the most active guys around here is @JourneymanGeek and @Mochan instead
@smartboyhw LOL
11:22
@Mochan isn't a guy tho
@JourneymanGeek Damn. You took my joke D<
@fossfreedom I'm back
whats the matter?
hi ya - I'm trying to get webupd8 to promote using your unity reset answer...
YAY!!!!!
@Mahesh wb
11:25
wb?
@fossfreedom Good
Q - why is the dconf method described in another answer a bad idea - what advantages does your unity reset method do - can you add that to your answer?
@fossfreedom I'll update it.
@Mahesh Welcome Back
@Mahesh BTW - how is getting this into unity going? making any progress?
11:27
yes and no.
didrocks likes everything and is ready to merge, but asked for automated tests.
and automated tests with resetting unity is a pain.
:( - going for a SRU in 12.10 or is the plan 13.04?
I've rewritten everything to make testing easy, and that makes inclusion difficult.
It'll get into 12.10
I plan to rewrite the entire wrapper.
certain things are now kinda obsolete.
the option parsing method used is now not the recommended one. switched in python 2.5
kk - thanks for the info.
in which answer should I add the info?
I know you can't be bothered, but does anyone want to let me know what you're doing? I don't want to help (because I can't), but I can test (if needed) and I am just curious :D
11:30
12
A: How do I reset my Unity configuration?

MaheshFor 12.10 and above I, along with jokerdino and amithkk have created a python script that cleanly resets Unity for Quantal and above. It is hosted on bitbucket at https://bitbucket.org/jpmahesh/unity-reset. From Git To install git clone https://bitbucket.org/jpmahesh/unity-reset.git cd unity...

this one?
add it to yours - downvote the bad dconf one.
yes
@fossfreedom downvoting not needed IMO
ok - lets see the advantages you come up with and why dconf is not the real answer.
@Mahesh I was surprised penrerun said this
Hi there! Can you explain how the script work? Thanks! — penreturn Oct 17 at 14:08
why so?
11:32
@Mahesh He had his own tutorial site
... the reason why I'm asking - its the same question webupd8 has asked me - they need to know this info for the article.
the reasons are more like preferences.
Ah let me write that on 2buntu.com !
it was gconf earlier.
now, it moved to gsettings. gsettings is supposed to intelligently handle the backend, in our case, that backend happens to be dconf
and unity devs prefer to use gsettings rather than dconf directly.
great news: If you are in xfce and when you use the script it switches your session to unity!
11:35
hehe. :P I reload unity, and while doing so, I dont care about your existing session. The old one also did the same thing. should I better check?
Now it actually sucks when you close the script so...
umm.. wait what?
if you run it from a terminal, your session becomes messy the moment you close the terminal.
thats a known issue that existed even earlier.
are you referring to that?
@smartboyhw - why have you submitted an edit to the unity reset answer pushing your branch?
@fossfreedom i just approved the edit
we already have our codebase on bzr
and we moved to github from bitbucket.
It actually makes no sense when you provide many ways of getting the same source.
one source and one ppa, thats ok. multiple sources which differ, actually is bad
11:49
the answer is now very confusing - what script and from where - suggest amalgamate answer to the master repository.
I'm editing it.
### Why is this better compared to using `dconf-editor` or `dconf reset` ?
 - The configuration settings were managed by gconf earlier.
 - Due to faster load time, dconf is now preferred over gconf.
 - Gnome provides Gsettings as a replacement for gconf.
 - Gsettings is a high level api that manipulates the settings stored in a backend.
 - Unity stores its settings in the backend dconf.
 - The consenus among Unity developers is that the settings be modified using Gsettings instead of dconf directly.
@fossfreedom i hope that answers the questions
should I put it into the answer?
no - not really ... lets see...
"Due to faster load time, dconf is now preferred over gconf." --> think you are trying to say unity has been rewritten to make use of the faster speed?
"The consenus among Unity developers is that the settings be modified using Gsettings instead of dconf directly." --> huh? so dconf reset is still valid? so why the need for the script method?
applications are being migrated to use dconf now.
unity migrated.
and didrocks said that a simple dconf reset wouldn't do the job.
and he has no issues with this script that uses Gsettings.
I know that - you know that. If I was just a casual reader - I would be non-the wiser why I should use the scripted method compared to the one-liner dconf method at the moment.
I'm trying to reach didrocks to find why he said that
11:57
ok - understand.
I get your point. That question needs to be answered.
and surprisingly, dconf wasreported not to work in all cases.
however Gsettings always does the trick
--^ that needs to be added to the answer ... maybe if didrocks can give some examples?
@Jorge was the one who originally talked to didrocks about this.
@Bucic the dconf reset command won't work in all cases. — Jorge Castro Oct 8 at 14:56
Did that edit got removed? Actually it is just a complete branch of the git one, but in bazaar
not yet. i'll remove it.
while adding explanations.
Courtesy: If you want to redistribute something, ask permission before doing so.
12:03
ping me when done - I'll then try to push your revised answer to the webupd8 guys.
and amith already has the code on bzr.
@Mahesh Where is it then? I thought it was only a ppa
@fossfreedom sure. should I just go ahead and add jorge's comment or wait for either Jorge or didrocks to respond
@smartboyhw look at amith's page to get those links.
@Mahesh - it needs @JorgeCastro and didrocks answers to make it a must use answer.
@Mahesh The prob: What page?
12:05
main issues:
one: Not asking prior permission
two: adding multiple ways of obtaining sources which are not guaranteed to be synchronised.
12:18
just checked. amith has forked unity and integrated the changes there, but the original repo doesn't exist on lp as is.
good evening
Eh. I'm going to sleepy now. Byeeee
How many featured questions are there at the moment?
@Mochan bye
bye~~
I don't see 2 questions there, which haven't expired yet
12:28
@A.S. ... are you trying to compete with izx with winning bounties ? :P
12:55
good thing, didrocks is in #ubuntu-desktop. not so good thing, I'm still waiting for his reply

Q: applications linked to desktops

ricoamorI have just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I found a weird behaviour in the multi-workspace management. Let's say that I have a couple of terminals opened in one workspace, and that I want to do something else in another workspace. I move to that workspace and then I click on the terminal icon. Im...

I am 90% sure this is a dupe to something
don't know what though
@mahesh what's the problem with your answer?
1 hour ago, by fossfreedom
I know that - you know that. If I was just a casual reader - I would be non-the wiser why I should use the scripted method compared to the one-liner dconf method at the moment.
@JorgeCastro - needs expanding as to why to use the script rather than the one line dconf reset method
oh
the dconf one doesn't always work
I say that in one of the comments to one of them
but no one listens to me because all the blogs are saying to use dconf
yep - need to add the reasons to the answer. I'm trying to get webupd8 to correct their blog and use this answer instead.
most blogs seem to copy from webupd8 and omgubuntu anyway.
okay. I'll update the answer saying dconf reset is known not to always weork or something similar.
is that fine?
13:04
need some examples - didrocks not replying?
nopes.
Or you can just wait for didrocks to put it in 12.10
Is "the guy who wrote it says dconf --reset doesn't always work, and to wait for him to integrate this into Unity" not enough?
"the guy who wrote it [didrocks]" - probably as strong as we can get at the moment.
Also, didrocks, the author of unity python wrapper says dconf reset does not work in all cases
13:07
right
I mean, sorry to have no reference other than the guy who wrote it. :p
adding this line to the exoplanation thing should be ok
:P yup that.
and i too have a gut feeling that Gsettingss is the right way.
you're not supposed to mess with dconf directly anyway iirc
always use the higher level api if you want to do it right.
that's why they wrote gsettings
yup.
 - The consenus among Unity developers is that the settings be modified using Gsettings instead of dconf directly.
does that sound fine?
13:10
swap the last for the first - and go for it.
okay.
should I say 'didrocks' or use his real name?
he is real ? :P ... if didrocks is his common name - use that.
okay.
@fossfreedom I think you can easily find a real name @Mahesh
we know the real name
13:13
@Mahesh Use it like Didier Roche (didrocks)
Bracket his irc nick
sounds good.
Updated and changed source reference to github.
@fossfreedom lol. no
@A.S. LOL
He is far away from me
but some of the featured questions (the two from vasa) isn't there
Oh, i see. the bounty period was over
He has earned about 79 bounties!! epic!
13:38
@A.S. Like!
appears
@AmithKK Welcome I like your "Damn I wasted my childhood" sentence:P
I see
Dammit
@AmithKK ?
Don't star it to Oblivion now :P

Is that a yes or a no?
@AmithKK A no I think
@RolandTaylor Ok, can you confirm if subway works?
/me hopes for the day he can enter 2buntu.com/friends-romans-country-men :!
@AmithKK what is that?
@RolandTaylor An IRC server.
13:53
@smartboyhw I thought you were added O_o
@RolandTaylor NO:D
When we switch over, I'll fix you up.
@AmithKK not right now
@RolandTaylor How's that going?
what are we switching over too?
@smartboyhw why can't you enter?
@Joshua /me wonders too for the first question
@Joshua IDK
13:55
@AmithKK we called it off yesterday
@Joshua George's blog engine :)
GBE
:P
It's better than wordpress, and we can add features to it more easily
@RolandTaylor what blog engine is that?
@Joshua It doesn't have a name IIRC
13:56
I see...
@RolandTaylor No name?
But I have become a wordpress expert...
I don't trust it:D
Called it GNBE
@AmithKK Stands for what?
13:57
George's New Blog Engine
@Joshua you will like it
@AmithKK Ah
@smartboyhw Green newbs blog engine?
@Joshua LOL
It's written with jquery customisation in mind
13:57
@RolandTaylor New engine whoo
@AmithKK oh
So awesome effects
(that's a whole different thing right there)
so little bandwifth
sobs
so when did we take a vote on this change? (not that it matters since @RolandTaylor is our dictator)
13:59
@Joshua lol George and Jrg voted with me
You were offline I think, but I did ping you
(I don't know if you got the ping though, there is another Joshua :()
@RolandTaylor yeah I saw the pings... but I wasn't clear about what you wehre asking me...
@RolandTaylor Missed the main thing....Approve my post first, it is going to happen in two days:D
Oh
@smartboyhw I approved
@RolandTaylor thx
@smartboyhw I almost did...
14:00
@Joshua lol
@Joshua sorry for not getting the details to you better - the weekend was hectic :(
But @RolandTaylor beat me to it.
(I did mess up on getting info to you this time)
No problem, just don't let it happen again :-P
and I agree the weekend was hectic....
brb
@MarcoCeppi How did you get subway working?
I can't get it to work
14:01
It's possible you're missing a package, or something of the like. IIRC, I just followed the README instructions
@MarcoCeppi amithkk.com:3000
So did I
You don't have mongodb configured or installed correctly
amith@ip-10-117-47-30:~/subway$ node ./subway
   info  - socket.io started
Subway started on port 3000
Can't resolve image path: ../img/glyphicons-halflings.png
Can't resolve image path: ../img/glyphicons-halflings-white.png
Can't resolve image path: /assets/images/join.png
Can't resolve image path: /assets/images/part.png
Can't resolve image path: /assets/images/topic.png
Can't resolve image path: /assets/images/active.png
Can't resolve image path: /assets/images/idle.png
Can't resolve image path: ../img/glyphicons-halflings.png
@MarcoCeppi can you please tell me how to configure it :)
back
Welcome Back @Joshua
14:06
not really, I mean, install mongodb, open the configuration file, enter the values, run node
@AmithKK thanks
brb again lol
@MarcoCeppi So, I dont need to actually config mongodb(Adding a new db or something)?
@AmithKK
just spoke to didrocks
amith@ip-10-117-47-30:~/subway$ cat config.js
exports.dev = {
    port: 3000,
    client_port: 3000,
    mongoose_auth: 'mongodb://mongodb@localhost/subway'
}

exports.prod = {
    port: 14858, // Nodester port
    client_port: 80, // Websockets talk on port 80 on Nodester, regardless of listen port
    mongoose_auth: 'mongodb://mongodb@localhost/subway'
}

exports.misc = {
  max_log_size: 32000
@MarcoCeppi so, on a default mongodb installation, this would be right?
14:09
@AmithKK propose after fixing that typo. rest all is fine. and may be add our names as contributors in the header. :P That goes in for Q.
and I'm rewriting things for it to get into R
Anyone going to listen to Ubuntu Open Week this week?
phanimahesh> didrocks: argparse is now the preferred method according to python docs.Can i switch from optparse to argparse? ( unity.cmake )
7:27 PM <didrocks> phanimahesh: oh sure
7:27 PM <didrocks> phanimahesh: for R only though, not Q ;)
7:28 PM <didrocks> you can even switch to python3 please :)
7:29 PM <phanimahesh> Gimme a couple of days. :D
7:30 PM <phanimahesh> will the --reset get into Q or will it have to wait for R?
7:30 PM → rdale____ and conscioususer joined ⇐ popey quit ↔ rdale_ nipped out
@Mahesh so, that's the one we have?
Hmm
bzr push is broken :P
amith@amith-desktop:~/unity.cmake/unity$ bzr push
bzr: ERROR: invalid header line: ''
lool
this is a problem
14:14
want me to propose?
nah
give me a minute
@AmithKK wait you push like bzr push lp:~smartboyhw/+junk/blah
You can't push it empty can you?
@RolandTaylor Good pic
@smartboyhw :P
14:16
@smartboyhw yes you can
My header is broken
repulling
back
@Joshua wb (again)
@Mahesh @AmithKK - well close enough I think ... tried my best. webupd8.org/2012/10/…
was that thunder??? hope the power doesn't go out...
@fossfreedom thats cool.
14:22
@smartboyhw thanks.
@fossfreedom I will not call it COOL, instead I will call it INTERESTING :P
and didrocks is all ready to push this into Q. I offered to port it to python 3 and spice it up for R
@Mahesh Python 3! Python 3!
@Mahesh All good?
you made the request?
14:27
@Mahesh yep
overwrite the branch on lp if possible.
3 commits for a single fix doesn't look nice.
@Mahesh Meh
do a diff and apply it on clean trunk.
It doesn't really show as 3 commits on the Merge request
@AmithKK Look at "Unmerged revisions" it does look like that
14:30
lol
wait
I'll do that
Lots of pull requests. :P we kids are troubling the devs
3
@Mahesh Good job:P
@Mahesh I did the same for Ubuntu Accomplishments:P
@fossfreedom. Good job with the note on askubuntu.com/questions/124292/…. I also put a warning on the answer about the 12.9 catalyst
@ fossfreedom This Q&A is still getting a lot of traffic and probably for 12.10 users. Im thinking the answer is almost redundant for 12.10 users and maybe we should put back 12.04LTS in the title
@StephenMyall yeah ... there are far too many 12.10 ATI issues at the moment - Jorge made a point (via a flag) that we should keep all ATI install issues under one Question - this one. I agree with that.
ATI are too slow with their 12.10 updates me thinks.
14:37
@fossfreedom I think the open drivers have greatly improved in the past 6 months so I dont use the Catalyst any longer
Its a pity some dont have the patience to try them out
Can I make a suggestion --- move your alternate answer into the main answer - headline it 12.04. Replace the alternate one with a headline 12.10 and make that the master 12.10 answer?
@fossfreedom To be clear 1: Paste the alternate answer (7 votes) into the main answer (39 votes).........I have stopped trying to make sense iof what your asking, its not clear to me
I'm following your concern - lets make the 7 vote one the 12.10 answer. Move the 12.10 specifics into this answer. The alternate method was relevant to 12.04 (correct?) therefore should exist in the 12.04 main answer.
^that should shut all the trolls up.
It has nothing to do with Ubuntu/Canonical.
14:45
@RolandTaylor Yay
Even I was wrong, it has nothing to do with money.
@AmithKK I think so
@RolandTaylor I thought it was funny how people just made that up
especially since the guy works for Canonical.
@fossfreedom Gotcha !, Check when complete to make sure I followed your logic. Itmay also be useful to put a bookmark link in the 12.04 answer to the new 12.04 answer
Except I dont know how to do that. Going now to make the changes
@JorgeCastro lol I was thinking the same thing "Why would a Canonical employee be mad about his own job?"
14:50
I don't think writing UT is his job
@JorgeCastro You set up Subway once right?
How did you do it?
After pulling it from git.
and installing mongodb
Lol I mean in the sense that - working on Ubuntu is part of his job in some way, right? So why would he be mad at Ubuntu/Canonical-related-stuffs
14:52
@RolandTaylor I don't think he works on ubuntu directly, I've never seen him at UDS or anything
@JorgeCastro I don't have juju set up
(not everyone @ Canonical works onn ubuntu)
@JorgeCastro ahh I see
how do I do it on an EC2 instance
@AmithKK look at the script and just do it by hand
start at installing mongodb
14:53
@JorgeCastro he... works on secret government projects like the Canonical world domination device (CWDD)? O_o
:P
Something tells me "You know too much" :>
Well the CWDD is better then the RWDP.... less people will die
Are the ubuntu servers overloaded or something?
@AmithKK if the Canonical ESF takes me out, you can have 2 of my cookies, @Joshua gets all the pie
The rest of my cookies go with me... to the after life!
apt get update hangs at 42% [1 Sources bzip2 0 B] [Waiting for headers]
14:59
muhahaha
@RolandTaylor ?
@smartboyhw :)
nothing!
@RolandTaylor LMAO
