Q - why is the dconf method described in another answer a bad idea - what advantages does your unity reset method do - can you add that to your answer?
I know you can't be bothered, but does anyone want to let me know what you're doing? I don't want to help (because I can't), but I can test (if needed) and I am just curious :D

I, along with jokerdino and amithkk have created a python script that cleanly resets Unity for Quantal and above.

- The configuration settings were managed by gconf earlier.
- Due to faster load time, dconf is now preferred over gconf.
- Gnome provides Gsettings as a replacement for gconf.
- Gsettings is a high level api that manipulates the settings stored in a backend.
- Unity stores its settings in the backend dconf.
- The consenus among Unity developers is that the settings be modified using Gsettings instead of dconf directly.

@ fossfreedom This Q&A is still getting a lot of traffic and probably for 12.10 users. Im thinking the answer is almost redundant for 12.10 users and maybe we should put back 12.04LTS in the title
@StephenMyall yeah ... there are far too many 12.10 ATI issues at the moment - Jorge made a point (via a flag) that we should keep all ATI install issues under one Question - this one. I agree with that.
ATI are too slow with their 12.10 updates me thinks.
Can I make a suggestion --- move your alternate answer into the main answer - headline it 12.04. Replace the alternate one with a headline 12.10 and make that the master 12.10 answer?
@fossfreedom To be clear 1: Paste the alternate answer (7 votes) into the main answer (39 votes).........I have stopped trying to make sense iof what your asking, its not clear to me
I'm following your concern - lets make the 7 vote one the 12.10 answer. Move the 12.10 specifics into this answer. The alternate method was relevant to 12.04 (correct?) therefore should exist in the 12.04 main answer.
