is it recommended to choose download from Main Server in Software Sources?
i use singapore mirror
faster for me
guess that means I should use server for Philippines
14:54
that sounds like a good idea
1. Change Repsoitory Server Location

It's recommended that you configure Ubuntu to download, update, or upgrade packages from the main server rather than using location-based servers. You can do this as follows:
I don't know why...
bbl
@Prasad That is a safe setting. sometimes local repos do not update as quickly as main repos
btw, I always use main repo
i use local
they are faster
though it usually takes time for updates
15:09
OK now would somebody like to approve my post on 2buntu.com no new updates now:D

Q: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS hangs at 43% of preparing to partition raid 1drives

PaddingtonI have set up hardware raid 1 with two SAS drives using the Adptec 6405E controller. I am having a problem when installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as it hangs at 43 % when partitioning disk drives. So far my Googling suggests that Ubuntu does not scan raided drives well. What can I do to finish my inst...

@karthick87 Samba does not have anonymity
@amith, found some interesting things in unity code.

Q: If you're not going to review and fix questions, don't use the review queue!

Jorge CastroI was sort of happy when I saw that the day after release we had 0 incoming new questions in the review queue! Aww man, nothing for me to do, everyone's taken care of all the incoming questions! Then I investigated by just manually reviewing the 12.10 tag. Many are missing any kind of informatio...

Q: How do I include a screenshot to illustrate a question in AskUbuntu?

Richard QuintThe title is the question. I have screenshots that make a question easier to understand than anything I can write.

@htorque - uhm, i see the stripes, but no cat
and a little levity:

@GeorgeEdison: > Registration for new users.
is that needed?
can't we have an admin do that, send a temporary password, and be done?
Didn't we have that before?
I guess so... but how will an admin know to do that?
Doesn't the user need to somehow "ask" to be a contributor?
jrg
jrg
yeah, but the default user setting was "Subscriber", and they got all posts via email.
to ask to be a contributer, they emailed Roland.
via a shared email account that @Joshua and I also check.
Oh, so they already had an account and then an admin would change the permissions?
jrg
jrg
that was the workflow then
That's basically what I'm suggesting here though.
jrg
jrg
20:43
I never liked that workflow.
So what should the workflow be then?
jrg
jrg
1. User sends email
2. Admin says "Hm, ok."
3. Admin creates account with requested username/random password/permission level.
4. Admin emails details, requires password reset after login.
5. ???
6. Profit.
That works. I would change the fourth step to simply requiring the user to initiate the password reset procedure.
jrg
jrg
or that.
Okay.
Well what I have can already do that then.
One other thing... is there any way I can add an SSH key to the server hosting 2buntu? :)
jrg
jrg
20:46
@GeorgeEdison: Get me the public key.
I seemed to have lost the one I had before.
Okay, one sec.
ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAADAQABAAABAQDV/aEqnwn+9d/Ih1bWGbMHY60CeXH0j+GAXxBmeFOwSialcVYphW/4UZR+JpIbvC2foQLf34kP77vBPkklMkssmwbHiWsQE28J3/HG3i9JlHmyB+y91RrGZPJfTHF+AAjgehklfzbhQ3xFolFy+C8Sp7jymRjUYogRv/ok27YhtBFflhRbhFSWcIS5jOSch9s+EpRUpOdeXubEr/SKkLW4Q+0kIzNA6hPArggRqP70d98iNywaVF3LVJdZHEVo3uMPblzvqDxM4vdoFmTHStOJxUF80nA+uG+w7xJCXgVcC44HGTScd5q+Eur5GntC6OOGtkGjrVMZMdaCYcaq02Cb nathan@nathan-ubuntu

does it work?
And I hate to be a further bother... but...
@jrg Yes, it works.
jrg
jrg
20:48
you're not being a bother, you're helping out! :)
...is there any way we could create a new database (MySQL) for the app?
That way I can get mine set up and leave the WP one alone.
jrg
jrg
oohhhh... now that is not a question I know the answer to.
jrg
jrg
i think the answer is we'd need to talk to marco
Or...
I could just use a prefix for all of the tables.
jrg
jrg
20:49
bingo.
I'll try that.
Oh wait.
I'm still stuck because it's a Python app and Apache needs to be shown the .wsgi file.
Do you have any sort of 'admin' interface to the Ondina account?
Wow... this server's running Python 2.6.
21:07
ruhroh....i thought only Mac still shipped py26 by default
jrg
jrg
I don't have access to any sort of admin interface, talk to Roland.
@RolandTaylor ^^

Keeping my fingers crossed for you
I'm rather sad - i think i 2tb drive just gave up the ghost, and my entire 2tb media collection with it
Smells like i'm going to gift myself a 6tb NAS setup with raid1 for christmas
21:32
the drive is toast? what all did you try?
well its NTFS
im' trying to repair the file system right now
if i cant get that working i'm going to try and mount this in a safemode vm and salvage teh data, then revive it with ZFS
so its more of a file system error than it is a drive error - i should have been more specific
just skip straight to salvage the data
i picked up this little number lastnight from amazon, arrived at my door today at noon amazon.com/ZyXEL-NSA320-Network-Attached-Storage/dp/B004UBU3SY/…
jrg
jrg
merry christmas to you. ;)
21:36
when i went to run my sanity checks, the 2tb external i was going to crack open and drop in there was complaining.. now it just refuses to do much of anything
Hola marco
@MarcoCeppi you notice any tearing on your raspberripi xbmc video playback?
solid. Going to replace my netbook xbmc box with a raspberry pi
Raspbmc
21:40
bookmarked
i'll grab it when i grab the new drives and place my order for the board
I've got the video playing off of an NFS mount on gigabit network without issue
yeah having some fun witht he NFS on this NAS i linked above
its not mounting properly or its sharing directories from some odd location on the box, i need to investigate this
i'm not a fan of SMB
I've got a JBOD enclosure with 4x3tb drives raid'd with BTRFS
BTRFS > ZFS?
it was rough to get running reliably, but I've got no regrets now
depends on what you want to do
21:51
just a sane FS with good options for recovery :)
I like BTRFS because of it's filesystem raid
I dislike hardware raid
I'm not sure what this NAS is using... i should investigate that
Some NASs let you choose hardware raid, or JBOD
JBOD
its jbod
ah seems that it formats to XFS
acceptable

if I wanted to learn anything related to lisp, I'd have to install emacs, right?
You wouldn't have to
theres a few projects that used lisp outside of emacs
jrg
jrg
but it'd be a the best way to.
like sawfish
22:00
Use whatever editor you're used to
I write everything in nano and geany
jrg
jrg
i'm familiar with emacs. a week inside emacs shouldn't be that much of a torture. :)
@jrg You going to be doing Scheme?
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi Was planning straight lisp.
Common Lisp?
jrg
jrg
yes.
22:04
cool
It's a pretty powerful language
jrg
jrg
i keep hearing that
after Common Lisp, I'm going to hack on Java. Except I can't find any free Java ebooks.
the sun documentation is actually okay if you have a euler type of thing going
@MarcoCeppi: Ah, just the fellow I was looking for. We have a question for you. We were planning to switch over to Django (from WordPress) for the 2buntu blog.
The server that's running 2buntu isn't setup for Python, is it?
22:11
@jrg docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial covers a lot of ground
Nope, we'll have to move you guys
What would work best for you? To create a new account or to use mine?
I can just move you guys over to a new server
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi so we'll need to change IPs, right?
That would be awesome, and thank you thank you thank you.
22:12
@jrg right, but I control the DNS, so it'll be seamless
jrg
jrg
Ah, ok.
thank you!
no problem
Zero downtime migrations are our bread and butter

Uh-oh... I hear a popping noise over the speakers when I insert / eject a disc in the optical drive... is that good?
Oh... never mind - someone had the speakers turned up really loud.
jrg
jrg
wonder who that might have been.
22:14
Other family members use this machine sometimes so it's anybody's guess :P
I need a new optical drive - or I need to get this one cleaned. It's not recognizing stuff I've burned (stuff that another machine recognizes no-problem).
who uses an optical drive anymore?
Hard Copy...ewwwwww

jrg

Hey, I found an old DVD with an Ubuntu 5.1 ISO on it.
@MarcoCeppi For backups, there is nothing cheaper (at least nothing I have found - except for my 50GB Box.net account :P).
THE CLOUDDDDD
:p
jrg
jrg
22:17
they had DVDs back in the Ubuntu 5.1 days?
No. Yes.
jrg
jrg
(also, ubuntu had a 5.1 release?)
Let me get a picture.
Hey guys
I had ubuntu 12.04 Then I installed Windows 7 and since then I cant boot into Ubuntu
Can anyone help me?
I ended up just throwing the disc in the scanner instead of getting a picture :P

Q: How do I reinstall grub2?

EekfonkyHaving tried all day to reinstall grub and trawling the internet I have had no luck. I can no longer boot into ubuntu and have tried boot disk frin yannubuntu but the grub tabs are greyed out. Other methods will not install it on sda1. I have no other os to boot into but have a live usb. Please h...

@MohamedAhmedNabil you'll need to setup the bootloader again. @AbrahamVanHelpsing dropped in some good info.
@GeorgeEdison i remember those books... they had 7 or 8 editions that i can remember.
Yeah - the DVD also booted Knoppix.
jrg
jrg
my library has one of those books - i really want to buy it off them and destroy it.
@jrg Tell them you can replace it with a brand new Ubuntu DVD :P
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison I was thinking a hard copy of my book with a Ubuntu DVD. :P
22:39
The problem I had trying to boot off the DVD (back in the day) was that the BIOS on the machine couldn't actually boot from optical media.
After installing a new hard drive, the bootsector was overwritten with an overlay that could boot CDs, but not DVDs.
jrg
jrg
lovely.
So in the end - I downloaded a floppy image that acted as a chainloader for bootable DVDs.
So my hard drive contained a bootloader that invoked the program on the floppy, which chainloaded the DVD, which booted Knoppix :P
Linux is so easy!

Q: Why are all the questions about upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 being closed?

NeptunnoI was trying to decide if I should upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 from my current 12.04 LTS. There are many reviews around the internet regarding the new features of Ubuntu 12.10 and I enjoy some of them, but I wouldn't upgrade if those features were brought to Ubuntu 12.04 later. After searching on a...

22:58
@GeorgeEdison yeah, i had to go searching for dos 6.02 installation media the first time i installed linux then upgrade to 6.22 for some software i had at the time after thoroughly borking my first install.
I'm nearly certain I still have the 5 1/4" disks for MS-DOS 5 (or something close to that) and GW-BASIC.
oh i wasn't starting an arcane OS contest...just saying that i remember
Don't worry - I just enjoy remembering the "good old days" (which weren't really all that good and considering my age, weren't really all that old :P).
when the man pages really were the best reference material
23:18
anyone know if there's a "ticker" app template to place arbitrary text in a scroller? could be anything: rss titles or whatever else. like the breaking news marquee on news channels, but on your desktop
this is the last time i ever buy an external drive formatted with NTFS
i have to reboot the external drive enclosure after every 5gb copied
its not the FS thats going down the chute like i originally thought, its the enclosure itself poo'ing the bed.
but i still have to distribute 2 TB across my network to format the drive. :|
</ gripe>
@lazyPower just rip the drive out of the enclosure and have a better day
thats what i did
i'm copying stuff around pre format
trimming the fat out of the library too
it amazes me at how a usb enclosure can suddenly stop working. its such a simple board
23:27
i thought about getting some read only usb to ide/sata non-enclosure adapters pressed and trying to re-sell them on newegg or wherever
lmk when you do, i'll buy one
well, the first thing was getting just the cables pressed. then the usb to controller bit. that way you could simplify RW slaving or get the "forensics pack" with the read only neon yellow cables or whatever
ooh, I'd want one of those.
especially if it was cheap
i know right...if you sold it modularly and as packs (like the ide to laptop ide adapter board that markets for 10 usd). just put it all in one place. make.it.simple.
23:34
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: write blockers are expensive
and not something the budding forensics student can afford
they are HORRIFYINGLY SIMPLE. it's like one or two disconnected pins. saying it's horribly complicated is ridiculous. if the controller does some readback test i could see where that cable would cause a problem, but i can't see ALL off the shelf IDE/SATA controllers requiring a readback test or reading at all
I bet a good amount of the cost is certification
damned lawyers
probably so. but i would just say, pay an electrician to cut it open if it's challenged and add it to suit costs
eh, forensics is still very lawyer-focused
so most tools actually have to be verified to be 100% certain that they don't mess with the data
i understand. there's a balance that is always found between the expense of litigation and perceived benefit. electricians are cheap, so i think it would skew the balance and rightly so
at least they DO something
23:41
Psst. What's the frying pan?
the thing i'm jumping out of towards the fire
@Mochan: cooking.se chat
@JourneymanGeek Oh. Yeah, I don't think I'd fit there -.-;
I could swear I have been there once or twice
Wow, really? Suppose it would be useful if you forgot how to blanch or something :S
Or make a pavalova.
23:49
'pavalovalova tun dun dun dun... mr bombastic really fantastic...'
i thought the frying pan thing was a frying pan in to the fire joke...it was wasn't it? (i didn't take any points in humor while i was building my character)
If anyone needs an idea for having fun - try writing a Qt wrapper for a C library that tries to promote its own event loop :P
It looks like I'm going to have to look into setting up some sort of multithreaded approach.
thinks you should be using a different C library
If only there was one...
what is it you're trying to accomplish?
re-writing the library MIGHT be simpler than wrapping it...just saying
23:56
ENet is a middle-of-the-road between UDP and TCP.
But it's a little too complicated to create from scratch.
It includes bandwidth throttling, message reassembly, etc.
oh yeah. i remember you mentioning the project, i just couldn't rightly remember it without prompting
This should work.
