@andrew.46-OnStrike I hope I'm on the sure side with my debian
@nobody We were trying to work out the other day if anybody here actually uses Ubuntu as their daily work horse :)
my main OS is debian for about 30 years.
@andrew.46-OnStrike I used to for a bit :D
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike I came to Linux via Ubuntu so I owe a debt
though these days I swear half the stuff I run are webapps :D
08:31
webapps?
is this over browser?
I believe WebApps is a common name for all applications that are controlled over a web interface
Such as Plex, Grafana, NextCloud etc
Almost any modern software actually
@ArturMeinild And what are you doing with your time previously committed to AU ?
Especially server software
oh thanks see I'm so clueless
@andrew.46-OnStrike Well, bunch of things.. Working, gaming, going to festivals etc. 😁
08:39
@nobody yup
@nobody Don't worry I know next to nothing about Web Apps :)
My rss reader's a self hosted webapp, and if you think about it outside gaming, 90% of stuff can/is accessed over a web browser
@ArturMeinild Festivals sounds intersting?
I'm a volunteer at Roskilde Festival - so I've been there quite a bit for the last week
I do not make mutch with computer internet video showing and music.
08:41
@ArturMeinild Cool! Any freebies for being a volunteer?
@andrew.46-OnStrike Sure - I get a nice t-shirt, food and drinks, and some free tickets as well
(because I'm team leader)
@ArturMeinild Whoa! I might come over and volunteer too :)
Hehe yeah! 😁
There's always room for volunteers!
Sounds more gloomy than it actually is but I volunteer as a Palliative Care Volunteer
For the last few years since I retired
But the festival sounds a lot cooler
Well it sounds rather important
I know there are several volunteer functions in the Danish Healthcare system as well
08:46
@ArturMeinild Important to the clients I visit; no free shirts or tickets though
No but that's just icing on the cake ..
@ArturMeinild Good point. What are the actual duties or tasks?
Oh you are all so important :D
just kidding.
@nobody Ouch :)
@nobody And how have you been filling in the downtime during the strike?
with gaming
08:52
@nobody You recommended me some games but I am still with SplitGate
And still being pummeled by my grandson :(
you got old @andrew.46-OnStrike
I'm waitung for trails into reverie
@nobody I did and the process shows no signs of abating
you must try harder duck und wech
sorry german phrase. meaning more or less I'm running very fast away
09:02
@nobody This does not against my grandson when I am playing him as he is too fast :)
haha the youth is on the winner road.
@nobody He is 12 years old and always tells me how slow I am :)
but we have more wisdom if it matters
at least I want to believe
09:18
@nobody I vote for wisdom as well as speed in Splitgate
@andrew.46-OnStrike I have seen that discussion the other day, and it gave me a concern as it gives me a concern today. I feel like that a large part of the autonomy- and influence-capable core of the community apparently is not fully invested in Ubuntu. Ubuntu is just secondary to many, and accordingly, that much momentum and initiative is missing from the community...
@andrew.46-OnStrike On Roskilde? I'm Team Lead/Coordinator for Health and Safety (Working Environment) for the volunteers.
So mainly about preventing and following up on accidents and near-misses.
The context of this recognition is that I identify that this strike is harming Ubuntu's identity, the Ubuntu brand. People's relation to Ubuntu (those peoples' who are not insiders to this community here, experiencing the site's today's standards will attribute all that to Ubuntu. They don' recognize that there is a SE strike, they percieve instead that the Ubuntu project might be not as interesting or attractive as it actually can be.
Oh and for Games: I'm playing Generation Zero, BioShock Infinite, and considering replaying Outer Worlds (Spacer's Choice edition).
And I bought Red Dead Redemeption 2 on sale, but haven't started yet
I feel that will occupy several years if I start
Speaking of which - I have to go pick up my stuff at Roskilde.. 😬
@Levente Fair discussion point. I should mention that my own Ubuntu experience started with Hoary Hedgehog back in the early 2000s and I continued with Ubuntu until about 2012. After that I moved gradually to Slackware Linux. I spent many, many years with the Ubuntu Forums before moving to Ask Ubuntu. Along the way I have picked up some useful skills and substantial knowledge about Ubuntu. This sort of story would be common amongst many of those who don't use Ubuntu full time
09:31
16.04 I think for me :D
debian 3.0 ubuntu 14.04
@Levente I think there will be all sorts of fallout from the strike against SE and I look forward to the eventual process of rebuilding our own corner of the SE empire
@ArturMeinild Dammit, I want freebies too!! :)
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike The earlier days on Ubuntu were a lot more fun and the Ubuntu Forums was a great place to be. Saddens me that it is so slow there now :(
@andrew.46-OnStrike lol
this was back when they shipped cds
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike For free :)
yeah yeah the good old times.
09:38
It felt like a big adventure
lol
I was using suse before that
now I'm feeling nostalgic
and was messing with a load of ... obscure OSes I downloaded lol
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike Distro hopping, we have all done it :)
some do not exist anymore
09:40
@andrew.46-OnStrike oh non linux ones too
I had a running beos instance for a bit
and a bunch whose names I forget
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike You did stray from Linux :)
Syllable Desktop is a discontinued free and open-source operating system for Pentium and compatible processors. Its purpose is to create an easy-to-use desktop operating system for the home and small office user. It was forked from the stagnant AtheOS in July 2002. It has a native web browser (Webster, which is WebKit-based), email client (Whisper), media player, IDE, and many more applications. Another version of Syllable OS is the Syllable Server, which is based on Linux core. == Features == Features according to the official website include: Native 64-bit journaled file system, the AtheOS File...
That I have never heard of...
me eathe
Is beos alive?
has been dead a long while but Haiku's in active development
09:43
yes haiku this name I know
wow I have really old install media's from 2005
I got rid of most of mine :D
and there's software (and hardware) ways to mount an ISO so no real need to keep em
I have an (old?) IODD enclosure that'll emulate an optical drive and has a little LED screen to pick a boot disk
I have not so much space on my harddrives
too much ps1 and ps2 game isoso
@nobody I don't keep everything all the time
I think
that enclosure has an old 320gb drive
my usbdrives are reserved for bakups one for debian the other for ubuntu and the last for PS4
(though, that's running in a proxmox VM host - which was installed with said USB drives)
09:59
It is time for me to setup my server for learning a little bit network stuff.
this will be fun
10:13
so time for dinner

1 hour later…

@ArturMeinild I wish I could play games, I was pretty good at pinball 60 years ago. Nowadays I find computer games too much like work, AutoCAD, Solidworks, ProE, Cosmos FEA, Staad Pro, CAESAR II, CADWorks,,, These can be very addicting, I am having problems retiring. None of these work in Linux though.

@tso Could I kindly ask you to update the askubuntu.com/questions/913486 for the current vlc version? Your old description no longer matches the current vlc interface, and I feel lost.
