Hi all, I have an idea.
Earlier I have complained that SE does not allow us to put up a banner informing visitors that there is a strike going on, disrupting some aspects of our operations.
Then I saw C.S.Cameron's edits where he replaced the content of spam messages' title and body text with the string: -----spam-----
My idea is to combine the two concepts:
We could use spam messages as information boards for the strike:
We could write:
"This was a spam message, but is now an unusual opportunity for us to inform you: there is this hugeass strike going on."
Would doing that risk earning the ire of SE? Would someone dare to try it out?

@Levente I'd try not to actively escalate
01:21
@Levente At the moment with a small team of negotiators working to get an agreement with the company I suspect we don't need any further increased profile for the strike effort. Best to simply flag as spam and look forward to the day when we can again smite this rubbish...

@ThomasWard-OnStrike Sigh
@andrew.46-OnStrike I'm beginning to suspect a bug in VMWare workstation; I can boot Slack fine from installer media, but installed system refuses to boot. Will try a new install using grub :P
I have a feeling I've spent somewhat more time on it than you spent clicking next with Opensuse ;)

@Levente I actually don't think it's a good idea to edit spam. Flagging it is better as the spam filters when re-enabled/if the strike ends, will learn what is spam from their content. I'm not sure they look into posts' history and learn from that.
08:39
@vidarlo I suspect so as well :). FWIW I use VirtualBox and I have 32 and 64bit VMs of Slackware 15.0 with no issues. (For SlackBuilds that I maintain for the SBo people: slackbuilds.org/… )
Are there an error message? Perhaps an issue with Lilo, The file /etc/lilo.conf might have some hints / errors.
@Levente in theory, it makes later cleanup harder
I'm planning on hunting down spammers on my sites with keyword searches ;D
09:26
Yesterday we had 12 spam uploads that were on the site for over an hour. I do not like seeing the site flooded with ads for Turkish Call Girls, Loan Sharks, Penis Enlargers and Drugs. I have been flagging each spam post as spam as well as editing the spam out of the post. If this is against AU rules with consequences of suspension, please send me a link confirming it.
@C.S.Cameron Flagging spam apparently affects spamram, the 'official' spam tool, and it makes it harder for charcoal to do its job afters
there's no concequences for it except making it harder to deal with it later.
and what @Levente suggested is just poking the bear
No action will be taken for editing out the contents of spam but I'd discourage it
09:42
and @andrew.46-OnStrike both of you seem to have misunderstood my motivation, so here is a clarification:
My motivation did not stem from an intent to irritate or to pick another beef with SE.
My motivation stemmed from user experience (UX) considerations.
I have a strong sense for the wellbeing of site visitors, and am no stranger to advocating it.
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike When I edit out the spam using ---------- spam -----------, It seems to get removed faster than doing nothing. When the bots are working, there is no need for me to do anything, so I don't.
With that said, I acknowledge your arguments, and I don't push for it any more.
We got told spamram works on that too but we don't have any details
@Levente Having had to deal with SE a lot, often motivation and what you end up doing can... be different
Lets wait for the strike to end, if you're not on strike, do what you feel is best, and once its over, give us a hand, and we can set the whole lot of them on fire ;)
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike does it look like, btw, that this strike will get positively resolved?
09:46
@Levente I hope so
But even if it does, there's a lot of work to do, and its not going to be easy.
they have been sitting on this issue for 3 weeks, with the strike 2 weeks: is there any trace of a progress, apart from having now negotiators?
@Levente ooh, so...
@Levente There's a lot going on
But details. well, its all over the place, some of it I can't share and I can't really keep track of which is which :D
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike okay, good to hear. I'm looking forward with curiosity to learn from the consequences of this unusual power struggle.
09:49
there's crisis' every 3-4 years
touché
I'd love to get back to better times, but it seems Its 2 steps forward 3 steps back
the only really 'strange' part is most mods are on the same page
as terdon had summarized elsewhere recently: it will be very hard to come back from these serial offences, rebuilding trust.
You can fix anything, if you're willing to put in the work
The first step is to actually accept that the lack of trust is a problem
10:15
@andrew.46-OnStrike Will try virtualbox. Tested vmware as that's what I have on my work laptop which has lavish amounts of RAM. My personal daily laptop only has 8GB, whilst my work laptop has 96, so a bit easier to play there :)
10:58
"has 96"
._.
I think that's more than my desktop :D
I THINK this can go up to 128 tho
@JourneymanGeekOnStrike yeah, I don't need it. Never used more than... 30ish.
The reason I have 96GB is a purchaser that attempted to be smart
I ordered 512GB for a server
He decided that I probably didn't need that, and had ordered the wrong ting, so he ordered what he knew was the max for the standard corporate laptop... which was a fifth of the price
after all, it didn't fit in the server, so what was I to do with it...? Return it? :D
11:44
28°C to 18°C in 55 minutes
quite some change

Why are y'all on strike?
