As in the current state of the question, I think OP is trying to change his device's MAC address (In less words, a hardware related job) rather than setting MAC address of the device in configuring a network, which is completely another topic. So, In my opinion this question isn't a duplicate of the link given above. — Anwar 13 secs ago
I tried my best...idk how well i did it?
But I still believe that qn can be closed for not being a question ;P
@AnwarShah Well, you can change your MAC address in software too. You don't have to physically modify your NIC to do it.
Yes. I was saying it is more like changing a hardware parameter.. I didn't mean it should be done in hardware level.
ahahaa, just install ubuntu beta 12.10 - n i think got ghost in my machine too ^..^
@AnwarShah Isn't this question about changing ("cloning") the MAC address too, though?
That's why I'm unsure if they're duplicates.
Though, idk too much about these ... but i think that question is about filling a field in configuring a system with MAC address
I think, clone MAC address is another thing...
I may be wrong
i'm reading this ^
@penreturn tell those ghosts that, they will be removed, purged just before the last hour of release

@AnwarShah ahahahaa seriously my mouse going everywhere hahhahahaaa 1st time happen
@penreturn It won't work if your authentication is done based on a MAC, right?

i have a set of 5 MACs I swap around with. my real one, and 4 others.
how do your internet provider recognize those?
evening peeps
jrg
jrg
18:31
my ISP doesn't. they recognize the Black Box they gave us, and then we do NATing and all sorts of crazy stuff.
traffic goes like this: My laptop > switch > linksys > dmz > black box > internet
they recognize the Black Box using what? MAC or something other?
Yeah, watching security footage, my favorite thing to do!
jrg
jrg
i think its MAC, but i'm not sure.
Oh. thanks.
jrg
jrg
@AnwarShah i don't worry myself with the Black Box, since for the most part it "Just Works".
18:35
How do I install Inventory Management Software? http://askubuntu.com/q/195244?atw=1 #installfromsource
what is this "black box"?
jrg
jrg
i'd love to get rid of it, since it's the most insecure piece of equipment on the network, but we don't have that option. :(
@Joshua ATT uverse black box.
I was thinking, how they still recognize you/your device (for billing) after changing the mac?
@jrg what does it do?
jrg
jrg
i only change my laptops MAC for those public hotspots that do MAC-based traffic limitations.
18:36
@TheInterrupter Why asking us? If you know the answer, write that
@jrg Oh. i see
jrg
jrg
i don't change the black boxes MAC, no clue how to do it.
I thought, you change device MAC
@penreturn gave me some links.. haven't read them yet
Nothing... cool...

@penreturn never heard of aircrack
sounds crazy
hehehe
i dont think this happen bcoz of aircrack...
what does it do?
A question:
what is meant by Low answer quality score [100], /questions/how-to-answer shown and skipped?
in score [100]
jrg
jrg
18:46
AH-HA! you've discovered the 10K flags.
so that means that the system thinks the user has a low quality answer. you can edit, or decline the flag.
@jrg I'm just behind aking and you i guess :)
what is the number 100 doing there?
I saw other posts with low-quality-flag but they don't have this number

no clue.

@jrg could you post here the contents of template? "ubuntu-servers" ??

Q: why there is no keyboard <kbd> in the menu ?

Augustwe have included options for bold ,italics ,links CODE etc , but there is no option for keyboard keys here . for example to get Alt as a key we have to place it in between <kbd> tags then it will be as Alt but there is no option there in the body box menu . if we place it then that could...

so:

@karthick87 --^
@aking1012 that is already installed
you need to run it as a user that has access to /sbin/mount.smbfs ... or do some sudo credential stuff.
@aking1012 am running it as root
19:13
make sure the command exists and check to make sure you're not on Quantal and they didn't move/rename the binary...
that's all i've got. i have to work on something else
only other guess is that you're running it as a cron job and you don't have environment set up to have /sbin in your path
oke @aking1012 i will get it checked and let u know..
@aking1012 one more than i am writing a script to automate few process.. Like we use an apt-cacher server for installing packages for all versions of ubuntu.. So the source file varies for all versions of ubuntu. We have kept all source files in the machine say ie. 172.29.32.100 and from ubuntu system we used to wget the file and replace it.. Here we use ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 12.04 so is it possible to automate this task using if else statement? Or which ever is applicable ???
i like apt-mirror for stuff like that instead of apt-cacher
jrg
jrg
I used to use apt-cacher-ng
@jrg really? :D
Like if lsb_release -s -d = 10.04 then wget 172.29.32.100/cacher/1004/sources.list && scp sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list etc etc.. How to apply if condition here??
jrg
jrg
19:22
@karthick87 the template was in the gist - that was the whole thing
@jrg sorry we are using apt-cacher-ng only
jrg
jrg
this is when a simple shell script thats to turn into a full-fledged program.
@aking1012 can you help me with the above query pls..
hi @RolandTaylor

I hope this will do what i need, can anyone help me out pls..

One user has posted 4 separate answers to this question, as s/he has helped the OP troubleshoot the problem. Since AU is not a forum, these four separate answers should really probably be merged into a single answer. Does anybody know what the best way is to deal with this? (I'm out of moderator attention flags for the day, so I'm hoping someone else can flag one or more of the posts and explain this. However, i'll get more in a few hours, so if it's not dealt with then, I'll flag it then.)
