@ArturMeinild I see a deep shortcoming in my own knowledge here, primarily because I do not use Ubuntu as my daily driver. Slackware, which I have used for daily computing for many years, has no need for such complex levels of support or commercialization. And with that background the intricacies of the different Ubuntu iterations make me shudder a little.
And you are an intelligent person, a seasoned Ubuntu user, and you are a little confused as well :)
@C.S.Cameron Thanks! It seems the "ESM" designation has been expanded a bit with Ubuntu Pro, hence my attempt at demystifying it.. 😎
@andrew.46 Thanks. Yeah, I think my main caveat here is that the description on Ubuntu's official page are somewhat vague for the issues people raise - mainly if you still get Universe updates without an Ubuntu Pro key. Canonical should be better at communicating these things, so people have no doubt about where things stand.. 😬
I've updated my answer with an example for imagemagick - which is apparently a package that has en "ESM security upgrade"..
However, it's still not clear what this security patch contains - especially since ESM patches is only available for X64, and thus Arm64 packages (and other platforms) are still on the normal "Universe" patch level..
