When I reboot my machine (as I did today) I seem to lose some functionality, specifically my previous ssh keys that I had copied over to other machines that had allowed me to login without a password seem to have stopped functioning.

For 12.10 (precise) if you are using Gnome's gdm (not lightdm):
None of the above works for me with gdm. If I disable the system-ready sound (the bongos), it still makes a short drum sound (one beat).
The way to disable it is:
Boot up, get into gdm.
Switch to the console (Ctrl + Alt + 1)

@Mitch thanks for offering - if I merge those two questions - do you have enough experience to edit all of the answers to clarify which answer relates to a particular ubuntu version/and/or lightdm/gdm ?
