04:33
@Marco: Are you around?
I have good news.
05:00
@Oli I made a funny... at least it was funny at the time...

3 hours later…
08:25
ah its impossible to get rid of
08:46
@GeorgeEdison good news? tell us :D
morning all
08:57
Good morning all
@OctavianDamiean the single user only question is getting a lot of very interesting answers :).
@Takkat yea it seems to be a hard one
@OctavianDamiean yeah, I thought it was - excitingly different ways on how to do this were suggested.
Hard to tell what's best ;)
Solutions depend a lot on how much restricition is needed for others to run a given program
@Takkat for me the best solution seems to be the one where you compile from source and just use the software
09:13
@OctavianDamiean yeah @Oli always has a very sensible view on how to make thing easy. I also like @jgbelacqua's point to separate visible access and execution control as well as to clarify that all this needs to be done after the installation process.
09:35
one day to go till natty A3! :D
10:17
one day to go till getting the fanatic gold badge :D
way more important! :P
@htorque fanatic?
"Visited the site each day for 100 consecutive days"
@htorque yep fanatic then :)
well well congratulations then
not yet!
can you receive that one more than once?
10:19
99 days done, hopefully nothing bad happens to my internets! :D
no, just once
:(
in ten days I'd get my second one :p
@htorque they cut only ties not network cables (yet) at "Altweiber"
ew have you guys noticed the top x% this quarter thingy in your profile under your reputation?
or top x% this week
@OctavianDamiean yeah, i'm in the top 1% - now what?
@OctavianDamiean the more the better :P?
Who's got 100%???
10:23
me!
if i'm in the top 1%, i'm in the top 100% too :P
@htorque lol
:D
hahaha.... the german party CSU: "guttenberg is still one of us" - of course he is, he's a cheater and liar and so are you! :D
@htorque :D
10:57
I sometimes don't understand this kind of behavior ...

@OctavianDamiean Trying my hardest to not click the delete button.
@Oli No one tried any money laundering/pharma spam yet?
amazon must be kiddin' me ... I want to buy an album and they require me to download their downloader which does not let me install because I'm on a 64bit arch ...
ace
Oli
Oli
@OctavianDamiean You can force through that
Or use Banshee which has a script built in... Or there's the script Banshee uses as a standalone somewhere
@Oli hmm Banshee is a good idea
thanks
forgot that they have it implemented
11:23
@OctavianDamiean: the new version of mp3 downloader may cause problems on 64bit, haven't tried it here still running old version -> Banshee ;)
Oli
Oli
ClamZ is the FOSS alternative to the AmazonMP3 downloader code.google.com/p/clamz
@Takkat How new? I have a version from a couple of weeks ago installed on a laptop and it seemed to work fine
likes Banshee
@Oli: don't really know here's windows, ubuntu at home (can't look). But old is say 1-2 years and new maybe late 2010 when they updated for extra stuff. Maybe a better version is out now :)
man I like The Wiseguys :D
@Oli does banshee 1.9.x work with 10.10?
Oli
Oli
11:30
@Allan Yeah I've been on their daily ppa forever
tried using 1.8.x but when I opened miro guide it crashed every time :(
it would replace 3 programs for me and I'm not an anti mono troll so I would like to use it.
@GeorgeEdison Yeah, I'm here now
I so hate it when someone pastes a long link to whatever instead of writing a catch-word and wrapping the link around it ...
11:46
@OctavianDamiean :P
also common sense does not seem to be all that common ...
.
boom
:D
Struggling with creating and editing wikis for the best part of the day :(
im bored.

11:59
@Allan wat?
Skate bored or Chairman of the bored
that guy with his blog is back!

googles furiously
@Allan Chaiman of the bored :D
im not so much in the memes, unless ive seen it a few times in my FB feed, or read it somewhere :p
is probably flagging too much
@KaustubhP just remember a funny pepsi max ad with a bunch of skaters in a lift and one of them says "board Meeting" to some one else in the lift :)
12:06
@OctavianDamiean What's your flag score now? :P
@YiJiang not sure
if it isn't displayed I guess I'm still in the reasonable range
im only at 2 I think
@OctavianDamiean The default range, rather
ie. Have not done any form of flagging at all
in total
@Allan youtubes furiously
12:08
interestingly I'm flagging way more on AU than on SO
@KaustubhP ubuntues furiously
@YiJiang Ubuntubes?
@Allan Eh, verbing weirds language.
@YiJiang don't ask me about english I have no Idea
I'm just trying my best to use 'Ubuntu' as a verb :P
12:11
@YiJiang Ubuntu you.

if you convert someone to Ubuntu would that be to ubuntify?
12:14

Ubuntification
well, for Jeff it's Ubuntinate
Ubuntificationist
if you want to Ubuntu other people...
At times I wish there was a 'groan' flag, then I consider how many times I'd get flagged as such.
@badp ... you just pass them a live CD :D
I Ubuntified this USB key so I can Ubuntu all computers and Ubuntinate other people.
@Allan been meaning to show you my helmet for long now!
@badp The Great Ubuntification has began!
12:18
resistance is futile.
@KaustubhP hmmm..... dont know what to say (:/
I dont know if the image has been uploaded, I cant see it.
@KaustubhP yea it's visible
@YiJiang The second renaissance?
@KaustubhP and...... shiny ......
life on an Ubuntu USB isn't that bad, you just gotta avoid updating the system while you use it.

@KaustubhP Is that your bike helmet or a bowling ball?
@MarcoCeppi lol, my helmet!
@KaustubhP Nice! I'm going to need to sticker up mine - cover up all the glaring gashes it has
@MarcoCeppi just don't forget to not sticker up the visor! :p
webupd8.org/2011/02/never-miss-notifyosd-notification-with.html Could port this to just show notify-osd's from Chromify-OSD
12:50
just the -1 version of it
@OctavianDamiean Nice, I usually wear a backpack when scooting so messenger bag would be out for me :(
@MarcoCeppi oh k I see
@OctavianDamiean I used to have that shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=643 until the scroll wheel fell off :(
is there some different way to ping using hostname rather than IP address in linux?
@sadmicrowave enable wins
12:53
new MasterCard just arrived YAY! I can book the motel in budapest now and buy cool new Ubuntu stuff :D
@Allan, could you be more specific, like how to do that, and what that does...
3
A: Why can't my machine resolve local windows hostnames?

Allanto ping a netbios name in ubuntu you need to add wins to /etc/nsswitch.conf sudo gedit /etc/nsswitch.conf and add wins to hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 so it looks like this hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns wins mdns4 save it clo...

13:05
hmm what would be the better shipping method? via UPS or via registred air mail?
@OctavianDamiean, better in respect to quality, or speed?
@sadmicrowave both?
well UPS lets you choose options too, like insured packaging and shipping, etc., (so does fedex for that matter)
I think it's a few extra bucks though
Oli
Oli
@Allan What is that?
@Allan is that supposed to be a mouse?
looks ugly...
Oli
Oli
There's some nasty chromatic aberration on your camera @Allan
Maybe not. Perhaps that's just the shadow getting blown out
i'm more interested why he focused his jeans rather than the mouse :P
Oli
Oli
@htorque =)
13:24
@htorque oi
Oli
Oli
@OctavianDamiean Re your flag on this question we do allow and encourage development questions here too. In this case it's particularly unixy anyway so the tools for the job might be Ubuntu specific.
@Oli right. For me it just looked quite general.
@Oli true that, but it's not the best place for such questions (i voted to close it)
Oli
Oli
In those cases, I think we should only really suggest that they might get faster help on SO rather than force them off.
you're the boss! :D
Oli
Oli
13:32
Not at all, I'm just sharing my opinion. And not acting. I'm not clearing any votes. If enough people want it gone, it'll go.
@Oli well thats why I left a comment mentioning SO
13:44
@Oli probably the lens needs cleaned
I've always taken this stance on questions like this: "Is it something that is particular to Ubuntu, or daily activities on an Ubuntu/Linux Machine?" and "Can this benefit someone else on Ubuntu?"
Oli
Oli
@Allan I think @htorque was on the money, the focus a bit too deep (on your jeans) so the shadow blew out
Because this question would be great on Unix.SE and SO
@Oli @Allan yeah, i too don't think it's a problem with CA
@Oli leave my jeans out of it! :)
Oli
Oli
13:47
@Allan Well we're glad you didn't
@Allan, you should be able to get this one pretty fast too (since its related to hostname resolving also). I can't use hostname when using ssh to my server. I have to use:
ssh [email protected] for it work.... any ideas there?
@MarcoCeppi agreed
notify is going nuts ahhhhh
Oli
Oli
@MarcoCeppi I'm not sure how many of my own questions would meet that criteria. I'd say most of them would probably be (taxonomically speaking) happier on Unix.SE
But I don't like Unix.SE. It smells different over there. :D
I might have to kick myself for that. I can't go around starting olfactory-based StackExchange holy wars.
@Oli No one does :P We've kind of jut settled on a Love Hate relationship. We'll move stuff over there if it's another distro (other than Ubuntu) or if it's super kernel specific. They move stuff over here occasionally if it's directly Ubuntu based
@Oli Naw, the sentiment is shared between the two sites
13:51
@Oli hmmm what of exactly

Q: Migrate Ubuntu-specific questions to AskUbuntu?

Michael MrozekThere was a comment and a mod flag on this post about possibly asking the question on AU instead. I don't think our previous discussions on this have been particularly clear-cut, so I'm just going to ask directly: should we migrate questions that only apply to Ubuntu to AskUbuntu? I'm going to q...

Q: What is the relationship between Linux/Unix SE and Ubuntu SE

Steven DIf both this SE and the Ubuntu SE make it out of beta, it might be a good idea to have some guidelines for when questions should be directed to the Ubuntu SE. Personally, I can't think of an "Ubuntu" question that wouldn't also be a "Unix and Linux" question, but at the same time (out of selfi...

@MarcoCeppi Hmm yes I think Gilles' quoted answer is pretty good. Essentially: post what you like where you like but have the right expectation of what answers you'll get in return.
however that question might be answered in multiple ways on SO where programmers running into that issue can find it. It is unlikely that a programmer will check AU for such a question in my opinion
@sadmicrowave what does ssh -v say when you try to connect with hostname?
@Allan,
coreyf@LinuxWD:~$ ssh -v coreyf@uslonsweb003
OpenSSH_5.5p1 Debian-4ubuntu5, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
ssh: Could not resolve hostname yes: Name or service not known
13:56
@OctavianDamiean I'm a developer - I'm always on AU :)
@MarcoCeppi me too but others aren't :p
True, some arent - a lot are
@sadmicrowave did you change your resolv.conf?
@Allan, after checking the man pages for ssh_config I found an option and tried putting it in the /etc/ssh/ssh_config file "HostName yes"
not my resolv.conf...
when I take the "HostName yes" line out of the /etc/ssh/ssh_config file and try the command again I get:
coreyf@LinuxWD:~$ ssh -v coreyf@uslonsweb003
OpenSSH_5.5p1 Debian-4ubuntu5, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
ssh: Could not resolve hostname uslonsweb003: Name or service not known
@Allan, update - I also cannot ping the hostname uslonsweb003 (linux server). I can ping the IP of that server though.
14:27
anybody ere on tumblr?
@KaustubhP Jorge is castrojo.tumblr.com
@Allan is there anything that Jorge isn't on?
@KaustubhP Myself as well - but I don't use it often

You've earned the "Copy Editor" badge. See your profile. \o/
@OctavianDamiean lol, you just post your stuff, like conversations, images, vids, whatever

@OctavianDamiean yup, following you emptiness :p
@KaustubhP whee :D
i got no tumblr, no blog, no twitter, no foursquare (no smartphone, for that matter), fb i hardly ever user - i feel so unsocial on the internets :D
14:45
@htorque you have the AU :D
@htorque oh well I don't use FB neither .. I don't even have an account
@OctavianDamiean i only use it as birthday reminder :D
@KaustubhP yeah, the best amongst all!
@htorque thats what my calendar on my smartphone is there
i don't want a smartphone, i'm smart enough myself :D
Hi all, can someone help me with chmod
14:47
prepend sudo
@Greg don't ask to ask, just ask
@Greg sure, wassup
I want to allow a user and group full read/write/create access to a directory, all of its subdirectories, but most importantly all subdirectories that get made in the future
I have tried this:
chmod -Rv g+rws dirname
and then
chown -Rv username:groupname dirname
but I have to repeat these steps every time there is a new directory created in dirname
I thought the 's' in the first command was for 'sticky'
@Greg who creates the directory?
@OctavianDamiean I created the directory with root to begin with, but I want to grant the same privileges to another user to do the creating
14:52
@Greg well I got that but who created a file in that directory after setting the rights? root or the user?
@OctavianDamiean root created them
@Greg then root is the owner.
ah ok, so.. I have to change the owner each time, unless I use that user to create the dir?
@OctavianDamiean type`chown user:root -R directory` then chmod 777 -R directory ?
@Greg exactly
@KaustubhP it is not really the best idea to give a directory full rights recursively
you should be restrictive and just open up as much as necessary
14:57
@OctavianDamiean noted.
@htorque @OctavianDamiean joindiaspora.com
whats that?
a open source social network project
@TheX i hear its a FB copmetotor.
@OctavianDamiean open source fb
15:01
doesn't like FB
no matter how open it is
doesn't need FB
no matter how open it is
saw the film which was pants
@KaustubhP I don't know if it is so much a competitor as much as it is an alternative
Agreee,
it might even vomit its entire source code all over me I don't like it
15:03
@OctavianDamiean I wouldn't like you either if you vomited on me :P
@TheX point taken :p
i think the internet should be deleted every 10 years
5
lolz
rm -R /internet
@htorque there would always be backups
@htorque it would take 10 years to delete the internet
15:05
@htorque You could try to use logrotate for that
doesn't work ... I guess I' lacking the powerz
plot synopsis: Skiny angry nerd with relationship issues scre** over rich good looking guys makes stupid amount of money the end
@KaustubhP at the rate we are going the internet is becoming the backup, with the "cloud" and all
@Allan the social network?
15:06
@htorque How did you guess
@Allan yeah.. to bad I didn't have the idea first... I mean screwing over rich people...
oh wait I did, they just caught on...
@Allan we are a bunch of smart people :p
@KaustubhP yes indeed still all together we definitely wouldn't be able to change a light bulb
@KaustubhP nuff said
well we would but it'd take ages
15:14
@OctavianDamiean unless you can do that with ssh
@Allan yea :p
@OctavianDamiean well, we cant change it, but might help out people wanting to.
I bet one of you could change a light bulb using a bit of python
@TheX a Perl one-liner
@StefanoPalazzo surely can. he can write a piece of code for tht in his sleep.
15:28
@htorque nice work copy editor!

A: Did Canonical take heating issues into consideration when testing the OS on the machines listed in the 'ubuntu certified list'?

AllanIt's very difficult to make a direct comparison between one OS and another temperature wise as the programs that collect the data from the temperature sensors in your machine do that in different ways. For instance two different programs in windows can give different results about the same compu...

gave my 10 cents
@TheX including the funny walk
wow I am ranked 68
there was someone questioning humanity becasue of the questions that were coming on the site :/
the funny walk?
15:38
@KaustubhP #11 :)
@KaustubhP it doesn't take this site to make me question humanity....
@Allan oh... sorry I have never seen monty python...
@MarcoCeppi :D i am so excited to be on a list!
@TheX thats the 3rd day or so that I am not getting british humour :p
@KaustubhP who is British?
15:45
Monty Python is like Marmite either you like it or you don't
@Allan isnt?
@KaustubhP ?
lol, sorry! I meant, @Allan isnt british?
@KaustubhP who isnt I'm confused X/
@JorgeCastro thanks, although i mostly do small edits (but as the saying goes: it's the small things that count :P)
15:54
Is this anything of an anything decent question?

Q: can Unity reprogram Touchpad mouseclick 2 to a keyboard key?

popMy laptop touchpad has left button (for mouse click 1), a right button (for mouse click 3). To get mouse click 2 you must simultaneously press the left and right buttons. Will Unity let me reprogram this action to. say, Alt-Z (or some other key combination)?

it has nothing to do with unity, i'd say
it's simply: make the simulated middle click spit out alt+z
It just seems like a really crappy question. I want to get it out of the site.
Well first of all Middle click is Mouse 3 not 2 as the OP would lead you to believe
@Allan Top of page 2 for the quarter: askubuntu.com/…
@MarcoCeppi isn't that what downvoting is for? :-)
15:59
@htorque It's in the unanswerd list
and there's over 1k, so I've turned into @JorgeCastro and am getting heartburn about it
:D
let's just delete all unanswered questions older than two months :P
