@OctavianDamiean yeah @Oli always has a very sensible view on how to make thing easy. I also like @jgbelacqua's point to separate visible access and execution control as well as to clarify that all this needs to be done after the installation process.

@Oli: don't really know here's windows, ubuntu at home (can't look). But old is say 1-2 years and new maybe late 2010 when they updated for extra stuff. Maybe a better version is out now :)
to ping a netbios name in ubuntu you need to add wins to /etc/nsswitch.conf
sudo gedit /etc/nsswitch.conf
and add wins to
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
so it looks like this

@OctavianDamiean Re your flag on this question we do allow and encourage development questions here too. In this case it's particularly unixy anyway so the tools for the job might be Ubuntu specific.
I've always taken this stance on questions like this: "Is it something that is particular to Ubuntu, or daily activities on an Ubuntu/Linux Machine?" and "Can this benefit someone else on Ubuntu?"
@Allan, you should be able to get this one pretty fast too (since its related to hostname resolving also). I can't use hostname when using ssh to my server. I have to use: ssh [email protected] for it work.... any ideas there?
@MarcoCeppi I'm not sure how many of my own questions would meet that criteria. I'd say most of them would probably be (taxonomically speaking) happier on Unix.SE
But I don't like Unix.SE. It smells different over there. :D

@Oli No one does :P We've kind of jut settled on a Love Hate relationship. We'll move stuff over there if it's another distro (other than Ubuntu) or if it's super kernel specific. They move stuff over here occasionally if it's directly Ubuntu based

@MarcoCeppi Hmm yes I think Gilles' quoted answer is pretty good. Essentially: post what you like where you like but have the right expectation of what answers you'll get in return.
however that question might be answered in multiple ways on SO where programmers running into that issue can find it. It is unlikely that a programmer will check AU for such a question in my opinion

@Allan, after checking the man pages for ssh_config I found an option and tried putting it in the /etc/ssh/ssh_config file "HostName yes"
not my resolv.conf...

@Allan, update - I also cannot ping the hostname uslonsweb003 (linux server). I can ping the IP of that server though.
I want to allow a user and group full read/write/create access to a directory, all of its subdirectories, but most importantly all subdirectories that get made in the future
I have tried this:
chmod -Rv g+rws dirname
and then
chown -Rv username:groupname dirname
but I have to repeat these steps every time there is a new directory created in dirname

It's very difficult to make a direct comparison between one OS and another temperature wise as the programs that collect the data from the temperature sensors in your machine do that in different ways.

My laptop touchpad has left button (for mouse click 1), a right button (for mouse click 3). To get mouse click 2 you must simultaneously press the left and right buttons. Will Unity let me reprogram this action to. say, Alt-Z (or some other key combination)?
