@RandomPerson I do not believe that SE has any control of a posters work. It is not SE's to give away. In the USA copyright is automatic on publishing and lasts the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. In India the duration of copyright is the lifetime of the author or artist, and 60 years
I am not trying to put anyone down, just to provide facts.
03:26
Copyright is the right to copy and publish a particular work. The terms "copy" and "publish" are quite broad. They include copying in electronic form, the making of translated versions, the creation of a television program based on the work, and putting the work on the Internet. A work is protected by copyright if it is a literary or artistic work. This general expression covers almost all products of creative and original effort. Copyright protects only the specific expression of an idea, not the idea itself. A collection of facts may be copyrighted if there was creative activity involved ...

I do not agree with any person or organization trying to limit the public's access to information about "Free" software or Ubuntu in particular, even if the site seems sleazy to them. After all SE is a for profit corporation itself.

I suppose the licensing section of the TOS should be more prominent. It seems bad that people are unaware of it

Q: Suggested improvements to "Markdown help" and formatting help

NmathOn Ask Ubuntu we have a lot of questions and answers that include multiple lines of terminal output which is best handled by using code fences. Without formatting, this information is difficult to parse and it makes the content much more difficult to read. Currently our community "Markdown help"...

@BeastOfCaerbannog No problem!
@Zanna Licensing section? Yes, I have not seen a licensing section. I do not even know what the TOS is, unless that means top of screen? I'm sure if it is so hard to find it has no legal validity. Please point it out for me.
@C.S.Cameron TOS means Terms of Service if I am not wrong
Thank you Random Person, Where do I find the Terms of Service?
Under company, you can find ToS
Yes, I found them, thank you
09:13
Welcome!
@C.S.Cameron I guess you got me wrong.. I didn't say that SE has control. "Creator" refers to the OP, not SE.
09:48
@BeastOfCaerbannog Reported!
09:58
@RandomPerson Thanks!
@RandomPerson I did not think you said SE had control, however after reading the ToS it sounds like they think they control anything you post and is "in perpetually and irrevocably licensed to Stack Overflow" .
@C.S.Cameron basically - you own anything you post, SE gets to use it under the current CC licence they have at the time, and other people taking the information from SE need to follow that CC licence version....
So the "perpetually and irrevocably licenced" is "You can't ragequit and delete all your content unilaterally"
Do you think that removing those videos from YouTube has helped Ubuntu and Ubuntu users? It sure did not help the poor guy who did all that work thinking that he was doing a great public service :-(
hm
I've not seen it yet
@BeastOfCaerbannog No problem...
10:07
@C.S.Cameron I would argue that this guy is abusing several systems for revenue, not for providing any kind of service. He knows about the permissive license and tries to economically benefit by it.
@C.S.Cameron hmm.. I am not a lawyer. Talking to a lawyer who knows international laws will be helpful.
@C.S.Cameron hmm.. but the person is breaking YouTube rules.
@C.S.Cameron sorry! yes it is well hidden haha
SE is a for profit corporation itself, profiting off work that was given it for free, the guy is no worse than that is he?
@C.S.Cameron Well.. that's complex to answer.
I personally don't go around calling the cops on everyone I see breaking the rules. The have unkind words for that.
10:11
@C.S.Cameron SE provides the platform though. The conversation about profiting is a bit political/philosophical.
@C.S.Cameron that sounds like comparing apples to oranges. Flagging in internet is nowhere equivalent to calling the cops IMO.
I read on Meta Stack Exchange they make about 21.5M a year
Please share the source if you can.
In this case flagging this mans work will likely cost him years of labour.
@C.S.Cameron Well, at the end of the day, different people have different opinion about this. I am not gonna say which opinion is right or wrong as it is subjective.
@C.S.Cameron this is not MSE AFAIK.
10:20
Personally I think the moderators should be paid.
@C.S.Cameron hmm. Read this:

Q: Why are there so many helpful people?

avisitoritseemsSounds odd, I know. I think information should be free, but I am also wondering about the self-sustainability of those who offer up their time for free, for SE sites and open source developing. Is the goal attained to spread knowledge, finish a project, etc.?

I do not understand the comment about MSE?
@C.S.Cameron You said that "I read on Meta Stack Exchange they make about 21.5M a year". The link which you shared (stackoverflow.com.websiteoutlook.com) is not from MSE.

A: How much money does Stack Exchange make?

Uphill LugeIt is a private company, owned by principal employees and venture capital investors. Since their stock isn't publicly traded, they have no obligation to publish profit and loss statements. And they don't. It is a secret, known to insiders only.

@C.S.Cameron I guess you wanted to share this: meta.stackexchange.com/a/214284
10:28
Stack Overflow alone recently sold for $1.8 billion.
What yearly return would be expected on a 1.8 billion investment? 2% a year would be 36 million.
10:52
And the labour is free.
@C.S.Cameron Naw, they bought the whole network
But the naming situation with SE/SO the company is confusing
So, the company started as "Stack Overflow Internet Services" then Changed their name to "Stack Exchange Inc" Then marketing decided the Stack Overflow was more marketable and so they called themselves Stack Overflow, though legally the company was still Stack Exchange....
11:22
The Wikipedia page should probably be updated: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_Exchange
@C.S.Cameron and at the bottom, they refer to stack exchange as a spin off company....
whut?
Did I mention its confusing?
@C.S.Cameron they bought Stack Exchange Inc, doing business as Stack Overflow.... so WSJ refers to it as them buying SO, not the whole network
I might be monumentally annoyed at the whole state of affairs :D
But they bought the whole network
12:01
That is great to know,,, I guess. All I know about Stack Overflow is that is who my weekly Ask Ubuntu Newsletter comes from.
@C.S.Cameron Its mostly useless knowledge :D
Well, now I trust the news letter a little bit more.

There can be another option like "Don't bump it on the homepage"

@Kulfy yes I like that change

"Dictatorship is a constant lecture instructing you that your feelings, your thoughts and desires are of no account, that you are a nobody and must live as you are told by other people who desire and think for you"
