Leaving for Connecticut tomorrow for a few days... Don't expect much to happen with my account then.
I think there should be a review task for questions that are link-heavy...
@adempewolff will the latest kernel work on it?
Or SE should use a giant community-fueled Bayesian Spam filter.
@Prasad 12.04 uses the 3.2.x branch and it works fine
@adempewolff and another thing...what will happen to the apps i've installed? will they also work under the new kernel?
@Prasad probably. most new kernels are designed to not cause regressions and be compatible with existing software. unless you are using something ancient you should be fine.
and if they don't, just uninstall the new kernel like you would any other package
and you are back to using the old kernel
13:03
@adempewolff thanks a lot...I appreciate it....gonna get it now
@Prasad or... you could try these packages. they are for lucid but they might work. and it might save you some time.
@adempewolff how do you say it is for lucid? plz?
@Prasad lucid is 10.04
@adempewolff Oh kk...
@Prasad oh well the files I just sent are packages, just install, no compiling required
@adempewolff thanks....!!!.....thanks!!!.....what should I download?...only i386 ones?
@msPeachy Your a teacher, right?
@AmithKK yes, why?
@Prasad is your version of Ubuntu 32 bit or 64 bit?
@adempewolff 32bit!!!...
13:13
@Prasad also, if you do decide to compile I found a how specifically for your situation: blog.avirtualhome.com/compile-linux-kernel-3-2-for-ubuntu-11-10
@Prasad then use i386...
and remember to install the image and the headers
@Prasad you always this excited? what's with all the exclamation points?

izx
izx
@Prasad is a symlink to @Nirmik?!
@adempewolff i'm confused...sorry...what is the easy and safe way..?
@izx ...!!!
@Prasad use the packages from the mainline ppa

@ObsessiveFOSS Or are you being packed off to summer camp?
@msPeachy One day, I am gonna call you by your name.
"Hi Prescilla."

What the heck

13:21
@aking1012 waves again.
@jokerdino LOL, so what? I don't mind. In fact my real name is much prettier than my nick here.
izx
izx
@jokerdino I don't think she'd mind!? ^^^^^
@AmithKK see how i didn't say hello all?
@izx ah alright. Must relay this to a certain someone ;-)
@msPeachy Ok. Got the message.
@izx but you do
izx
izx
13:23
@msPeachy Yes...nicks exist in public fora for a reason... :)
@izx This is only for a few days. Also, I will actually have access to a computer with Blender, but alas, no internet access.
OLD IMNOTTHISPERSON SAYS-General discussion around Ubuntu & Ask Ubuntu and official Ubuntu derivatives.
@Prasad omg, don't remind that again.
izx
izx
@ObsessiveFOSS So what? Blend a cellular modem and off you go...
@jokerdino rofl...sorry...i though you like it
izx
izx
13:24
@Prasad Huh?
@izx hih
izx
izx
@Prasad "OLD IMNOTTHISPERSON"
@izx once upon a time, there used to be a chatter who posts the topic whenever we mildly go off topic
@izx yes...cuz I don't know his NEW name
@izx kk
13:25
new name: tachyons I think
izx
izx
@jokerdino Ahhhh. That explains it.
doesn't jrg do that too?
@jokerdino but I like not this person thing...suites great :-)
@msPeachy no. jrg times out the chat room.
yeah that too
13:27
Like a real mod.
real MODE
he and Roland got a into a discussion about the pope, apostles, angels, etc
might be fun.
@jokerdino tachyons switches names like i switch jeans
@adempewolff there are two 30MB files there...which is my one?
13:29
@aking1012 Not sure if I should be laughing or ?
But I found it funny.
@jokerdino jokers don't laugh (it's a joke too)
okay like 5 times since i've been here so not directly, but it's an expression
@Prasad how much RAM do you have?
@Prasad Hmm.
@aking1012 I for a while wondered if that was literal. Glad to know it isn't.
@adempewolff sometimes 1GB....but after onboard it will be around 900mb (this is old-old=gold)
@jokerdino you are not angry with me..are you?..i can't fing you in gtalk! :-(
13:32
@Prasad then the normal i386 one will be fine, you don't need the PAE
@adempewolff whta is that pae for
so image and headers
@Prasad so many questions!!
@Prasad lol... PAE stands for physical address extension, it allows 32 bit kernels to address more than 4GB of RAM
@adempewolff sorrrrrryyyy..........I apologize..i'm not a geek like you guys...I do not need to wipe my entire hard disk by a mistake :-)
@adempewolff Argh...I knew it :)...but pae word is new to me
@Prasad me what? No. I am not online on Gtalk.
@jokerdino the expression really reads a little differently, but it's not necessarily suitable for open chat...
13:35
@jokerdino yes you are not....b***** v***** is gone (it's your name)
BTW, jrg has a call for arms for all of us to flag more.
@jokerdino @BoltClock HEY YOU. STAY OUT OF MY FLAG QUEUE.
i'm working on clearing the close queue before i start filling it back up
@jokerdino your name is gone for ever....can't find it!
@aking1012 Hmm we probably should drop that. It's a pleasant surprise to see you here.
@Prasad Oh
probably...am around some though
13:36
@Prasad I don't know. I'll check later
woo
I just found a ton of dupes
@jokerdino it's okay....if it is there....i'll talk you more often and make you angry :-)
@JorgeCastro whooooo
izx
izx
Will someone tell me why @Prasad has to compile a custom kernel to make Intel 865g graphics work?
@Prasad Noo
13:37
I think i8xxx was dropped a while ago
@izx cuz he has hit his head with a ubuntu cd :-)
izx
izx
@JorgeCastro But he's on 10.10....
@izx when I began instructing him to do as much I was under to impression that he was having problems with a recent Intel graphics chipset

Q: How do I fix this "E:Type '*' is not known on line * in source list ..." update error?

htorqueEvery once in a while I see users having issues to update due to errors like this: E:Type 'ain' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/some-ppa.list' with varying types/line numbers/source list files (often after removing a PPA). How can such an error be fixed?

I didn't know we had a master for this one
Starred b/c when @Jorge says RAWR he means it...
jrg
jrg
Crushing stuff != 8 flags.
so I found them all on the site and flagged for dupe/merge
;_;
I will need to find more things to crush you with then
@jrg need more flags
13:42
I am out of close votes too

i just hit it and ran out...
hey @jrg, can slightly bigger sites get slightly more close votes than standard?
13:44
methinks this has been discussed before
jrg

Look. Compared to SO, which is the standard, we are tiny. We are not "slightly bigger".
they DID start awarding closevotes every 12 hours at half capacity for daily i think...

i'm gonna do my kernel thing now...wish me luck...I will definitely come here with lots of questions...prepare to answer (JOKE I know u don't like old version questions) bye thanks @adempewolff ....bye all bye@jokerdino @jrg @izx @msPeachy and my old friend @aking1012....bye

@jokerdino I don't use scripts

A: How to fix missing GPG keys Ubuntu 12.04

Bharatfirst enter the following command in the terminal sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf then update your system by entering the following command in the terminal sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade after this there should be no errors and everything should work fine.

the answer should possibly work.
note to self: dice should have a way to mark jobs as "applied" to mask them from the list-view
izx

Every apt-get problem can eventually be duped to MergeLists :D
@jokerdino thank you, will try this
what's the difference when the command prompt ends with a $, % or #?
izx
izx
Different shells, personal preference, maybe something deeper....might be a good question to ask :)
14:03
$ user, # root, % idk
seems like when i added a login shell for the nobody user in some situation it had a # prompt too, but i could be remembering wrong...
so # might be "system user" to include root
okay got it
I think % is default for csh or zsh isn't it?

@karthick87 Yes, if the popup is only for sent messages then that's not difficult to do. I was having a hard time getting it to work when composing, because Thunderbird doesn't seem to parse javascript at that point... I'll edit the question with it and screenshots in a little while. :)

@izx That 404 happens on any site you aren't logged in where you try to vote, but intermittently.

14:11
I must get my hands on a DVD, sounds like a campy romp...
@ObsessiveFOSS So there's a sober 404 that alternates with this one?
@jrg i can think of one that still holds
` (9) For all resources, whatever it is, you need more.`
@izx UI'm talking about the nature of the error, not the nature of the error page.

@aking1012 most of them are broken.

if they don't have to be new and fancy check out the "certification rack" suppliers. you can get cheap catalyst switches in quantity that way

@jokerdino the GPG errors are gone but I still get this:

So this is odd --- if you are downvoted but reach the rep cap, extra upvotes cancel out the downvotes with +2, so there's effectively no downvote penalty...
14:19
yeah, it's based on distance from start, not vote quantity
the logic is WAY simpler (no need to tally edit rep, question rep, and answer rep independently)
izx
izx
That makes sense.
also think about what happens when you get within 10 of cap. the logic could get tricky...so just distance is SO much easier
canonical "is slow, how can i improve speed" question...can't find it
@msPeachy that means no ppa package for quantal.
Hello @MarcoCeppi
14:29
@fossfreedom so what should I do? remove it from sources list?
@msPeachy Yes. And ask the PPA maintainer to create a Quantal version, or build it yourself(although that may be hard).
but there isn't an ubuntu one entry in the /etc/apt/sources.list file
Hello all :-)
nevermind, see it
@msPeachy this one will help you askubuntu.com/questions/65911/…
14:34
@fossfreedom thank you
I have a quick question about reviewing: I have reviewed over 1k posts in the past few days and started to work on the older posts, I noticed they dont add to the tally. Is this correct?
which tally?
the close tally or the low quality one?
LQPs and my tally (in terms of haow many i have done
@StephenMyall they only show up if you do them through the review interface
if you do it through other methods, it won't count them up
I think the Review stat tallies on the beta and old are separate
14:40
@JorgeCastro To be clear I have reviewed 1029 LPQs, I was expecting to add to this niumber when reviewing New posters Q&A, but i guess thats not how it works
@MarcoCeppi I use the review interface
well, the LQP count has gone down like 500 since we started
@JorgeCastro I was just curious. thanks
@msPeachy Thats what i thought and thats what i was asking :-)
@izx you around?
@StephenMyall awesome that you've reviewed that many. i think hope that part of the metric is receiving votes/answers. even if a question is "brief" it may express the exact amount of detail required to be a targeted question with a succinct answer
@aking1012 Gotcha, that makes sense (if it is the case)
@StephenMyall Yes, I only do the beta review when I've clean up my old review queue. I've made 4266 so far in the Old Review
14:52
@msPeachy Right, congrats on reaching 2k btw
@StephenMyall thank you. @izx and others made it happen.
i can ALMOST tell without reading that edits are good edits depending on who they originate from ;) before someone says it, yes i still read them
I think once "first questions" is put into the new system when we'll really see alot of value
I mean, the low quality stuff tends to be voted 0 or 1 anyway, so it's not as in your face as poorly written new questions
and that queue has like 9k questions in it!
@JorgeCastro :a lot of what I reviewed in LPQs are appearing in the New question pool
hah yeah
14:59
@JorgeCastro use up all my daily skips :-) i thyink your allowed 2000 of these
