@EliahKagan Which Country Has All Wifi Channels Open? [closed] :)
@izx k
@izx Thx.
@EliahKagan Given the large amount of questions in the delete queue, it won't be deleted any time soon for sure.
@izx Thanks.
@jokerdino That reminds me. I have one delete vote left today. I should probably visit the delete queue again.
6 delete votes not enough. :/
izx
izx
The other problem I have with the Q/A is that the OP's other posts (see Bohemia) make it clear that he is trying to violate the regulatory maximum RF TX power in his region, so....
@jokerdino 6?
08:02
@izx yes 6.
izx
izx
Wow, I sorta remember that, but I haven't run out of delete votes in a while o.O
You get 1 delete vote every 1k rep.
Which maxes out at 35k rep.
izx
izx
ah, that explains why
probably time to give @jokerdino a bounty boost soon...
I get enough necro rep everyday. :-)

Orly? How about some necro down-rep? :P
08:05
Would be fun :P

I seem to recall we have a canonical question against which we can dupe questions like this one:
-1
Q: error while Upgrading

vipindiwakarW:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_main_i18n_Translation-en , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Does anyone recall which one it is?
It's the mergelist

How can I fix this?

@jokerdino @izx Thx.
I think we also have a (different) canonical question against which we can dupe this:

Q: Instalar o Ubuntu / Install Ubuntu

Joaquim VenâncioI installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Windows 7. I was able to upgrade to version 11.04. Now I'm trying to update to version 11.10 but I get an error message saying it is not possible to upgrade. It's just a general question about how to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows.

Q: How do I set up a dual boot Windows and Ubuntu?

WilliamI currently have Windows 7 on my computer and I want to install Ubuntu alongside Windows safely. Could someone please provide a good tutorial? Thanks!

hello all, Just flagged a dupe before i realized the dupe was asked at a later date. Both are popular (in terms of rep). How to we handle? askubuntu.com/questions/21787/…
08:32
Should have been the other way around I think.
@jokerdino Yep, it obviously slipped the net, Im sure the mods will pick this up
I'll dispute the flag. Flag the other way around.

hakermania FTW! :D
@izx I agree, thats why I came here to ask
@izx You sure?
izx
izx
@jokerdino Just look at the accepted answer on that one -- something which is only available in 12.04 and does not work (bug)....
@jokerdino keeping an eye on things eh!
well, wallch wasn't available before oneiric either. but it works though.

wallch works.
having fun with wallpaper Qs are we?
yessir :P
izx
izx
@jokerdino Yes, the point is that the newer question has a much better accepted answer with...wait for it...wallch. While the older one makes wallch a footnote...
ok - you guys have flagged two ... what about this one... askubuntu.com/questions/134/…
08:41
@fossfreedom I answered a question a few weeks ago, the fact it was an exact dupe , slipped the net
@izx Merge candidate then.
izx
izx
@fossfreedom TBH they can all be merged to that one if the question is edited for the various scenarious -- pre-selected, from a folder, sequential, random time, etc.
just wondering ... askubuntu.com/questions/21787/… edit this to say "this allows you to change random pictures" and then merge with the other wallpaper stuff... then we'll have all wallpaper Qs under one place.

Merge these two Google Drive questions?
1
Q: How to access Google drive from Ubuntu

devav2Is there any app that can fully integrate with Ubuntu(with Nautilus) to access Google docs and other files that I have stored on my google drive? Is it possible to do a selective sync from GDrive to Ubuntu?

2
Q: Is there a Google Drive client for Xubuntu

EyalI'd like to install a Google Drive client for Xubuntu (12.04). I'm getting non-English google results, and I didn't find grive in the Xubuntu repositories. Does anyone know of a client that works well for Xubuntu (or installation instructions for grive?)

@izx Since there don't seem to be Xubuntu-specific answers, I'd say yes, that they should be merged.
@StephenMyall - now that the merge has happened - your answer seems superfluous...
Some road rage fun anyone? youtu.be/aAYChKVMAzo
08:57
@fossfreedom agreed, do you want me to flagg for deletion?
no - I can do ... I thought I should just confirm you are happy that I do it.
@fossfreedom sure np, just an additional small hillb to climb to get me to 3 k :-) go for it
@StephenMyall I would be throwing tantrums :p
@jokerdino ah no, its the price to pay for not noticing the original dupes, i'll get it back
09:00
@jokerdino ... and I thought you were now calmer since you've climbed the 10K peak... :P
@fossfreedom Actually yes. Now I am :P
@jokerdino Thx.
@StephenMyall Soon soon
@fossfreedom How was your vacation BTW?
@jokerdino yep, I m off now, into my little seclusion that is LQP to do some damage, bye all, and thanks
@StephenMyall bye

For the first time ever, I've reached my comment vote limit, and cannot uptick any more comments until tomorrow.
@EliahKagan And Im grateful for this :-).......... Joking aside you put some good ones my way
this has got to be a dupe of something
@adempewolff If the title was edited to something like "What are my options for disk partitioning during installation" then its a dupe of "How do I install Ubuntu" IMHO. I agree theres nothing new being asked.
the problem is that there are a million slightly different questions about partitioning
but no really good questions or answers to dupe them to
I think we need a canonical question about partitioning/dual-booting/multi-booting
11:08
@adempewolff IMO a comment to the OP seeking additional clarity wouldnt go amiss. Specifically around the OPs windows requirements
Good day to everyone:) :) :) :)

why can't I vote a post on the new review?
No one can. They removed that feature.
So I had to open a window just to vote, well okay, I can do that.
thank you
Yes. They made it more difficult to vote a post.
anyone have experience with qemu? I've installed it using sudo apt-get install qemu but when I try to run qemu in the terminal it says the program does not exist
I can't seem to find instructions on how to install it in Ubuntu
let me check
12:30
didn'[t think it would be a problem
qemu-kvm is the package
Bounty offered: What alternatives are available to replace the purple boot splash screen? http://askubuntu.com/q/173329?atw=1 #plymouth
thanks @jokerdino, and upon installation of that, I still can not run the command 'qemu' in the terminal
or qemu-kvm
command not fuond
well, did you install it yet?
yes
"qemu-kvm is already the newest version."
12:32
hm sometimes the command and the package are different
is this qemu a graphical app?
we can probably look up the desktop file if it is
@jokerdino, not really. it is like virtual box but can emulate arm processors
okay. i need some time
is this really urgent?
it does not have a ... dedicated graphical interface... ive never used one actually the command line is easier
3
Q: How do I install qemu in 12.04?

LimeHow do I install the qemu command? I type qemu and press tab and I get a list of several binaries installed. qemu-alpha qemu-arm ... qemu-x86_64 but no qemu. I type man qemu and it returns the docs as if the command is already instaled. I type qemu to run the command but it doesn't exist? ...

not urgent but if you don't know then I don't wanna take any more of your time
thanks though
12:34
@joshua you probably need to install couple other packages
@EliahKagan - FYI - whilst you flagged this for another matter - I've deleted the only answer since it made no sense to keep it given that the PPA no longer has the packages in there. askubuntu.com/questions/117822/how-to-upgrade-samba-on-10-04-04
down to 50 some questions in the close queue
AWWWW YEAH.
That is for you. Not for the entire site. :P
I still see about 150 questions :S
@jokerdino, thanks. looks like I needed a package called qemu-user and then I will have to run the command qemu-arm ... trying now
152 to be exact.
12:38
should I choose the Recommend Deletion for answers that are comments or links?
@msPeachy comments yes. links maybe.
i flagged two link only answers that have no sense at the moment
-3
A: How to disable GUI root login?

Baban Gaigolevery nice tip and very helpful to find out more on ubuntu 11.10 you can visit - http://hashprompt.blogspot.com

The answer doesn't even link to a relevant blog post.
Hi all @jokerdino great gravatar :-)
@Prasad Hi. Thanks.
It is a dino clipart.
He he...yeah!
a dino who jokes a little
Joker-dino
@jokerdino does the options leave automated comments?
12:40
@Prasad Hm, that's an interesting way to look at it.
@msPeachy for recommending for deletion, apparently yes.
I think it's not just me....everyone sees it as Joker-dino
@adempewolff sorry about last time
@Prasad eh, sorry about what?
@izx lol....lightning conductor is me myself
@adempewolff lightning LOL
we were talking about....
@jokerdino lol, that seems unnecessary since the comment section would be filled with the same automated comment (if there have been other users who reviewed that same post). I was not aware that by selecting the Recommend Deletion that also leaves a comment.
@Prasad you're apologizing for a weather event?
12:42
unlike Nvidia, intel drivers aren't proprietary and don't need to be installed separately. okay, catch you later!
@msPeachy It gives you an option to not leave a comment as well IIRC.
@Prasad cya
@Prasad did you get your problem figured out?
yes and no....the weather was bad from the begging and I did continue
can you remind me what your problem was again
@adempewolff argh...
there isn't any problem now
wait
12:44
. . .
this was my last question that didn't end because of the GOOOOD weather
if I switch to my onboard graphics..I konw 12.04 will recognize it well...but I have 10.10 installed....It won't automatically switch to it......is there a way to do this?
@jokerdino yes, but then the mods wouldn't know your reason for flagging the post or for recommending it for deletion?
Hello
@msPeachy If someone already left a comment, choose not to leave another comment. If not, feel free.
@AmithKK ping
@njallam hi
@jokerdino pkay
12:46
@Prasad yeah you just need to backport a 3.2.x family kernel
@jokerdino hello
you can search around if someone has one for 10.10 in a PPA
or you can compile one yourself
@msPeachy mkay
@adempewolff but I think i'm using 2.** kernel now ...cuz it is ubuntu 10.10?
yes. 10.10 stock kernels are 2.8.x I believe
and they will not have support for recent Intel integrated graphics (ie. sandy bridge, ivy bridge)
12:47
So what are we all doing?
Ubuntu Developer Week?
@jokerdino but does the mods really delete linky answers? I have yet to see that.
@jokerdino Hello
Hello all
@adempewolff is it safe to get higher kernel on a old system?
@AmithKK hi
@AmithKK and @njallam hey kids
@Prasad probably safer, as you have more recent security updates
as long as it is correctly compiled you shouldn't see any regressions
12:49
@msPeachy Hello
@adempewolff mmm...so...how to do it :-)
Anything for me to flag?
however there is always the risk of regressions using old unsupported versions of Ubuntu
@adempewolff no risk-no reward
@msPeachy they don't.
12:50
@msPeachy usually only delete if the link is now dead or if the link is so poor that the answer becomes worthless.
unless some flag heavy user flags it
so it appears that the normal qemu works differently than ubuntu qemu
most forums with help on using qemu give info on using a different version it looks like
@foss askubuntu.com/questions/17789/how-to-disable-gui-root-login/… relook into this? it is a link to a blog. not a blog post..
all my knowledge of qemu is useless with the ubuntu qemy
@JoshuaRobison :/
12:51
@fossfreedom okay, got it. Thank you sir.

Q: Error «dvd:///media/Disc1%20(DVD-Video»

@fossfreedom What if the link is in another language?
what is super weird is i installed like aqemu and qemu-launcher for graphical interfaces and they give me the same errors "qemu not installed " "qemu-system-arm not installed"
If it was French I'd be fine, but not Spanish
12:52
but ubuntu's version of qemu for arm is qemu-arm not qemu-system-arm and making a sym link doesnt work either cause the programs don't work the same. it only gives me a man /help page
T_T
:'(
ok this chat room is too noisy. I am going to #ubuntu :P
@Prasad well googling "maverick backported kernels" might find a pre-compiled one you can use
@jokerdino another joke.....laugh people
@jokerdino Looks like the user runs the blog.
@Prasad otherwise its the fun world of kernel compiling (which has a ton of good howtos)
12:54
@adempewolff mmm...I will try.....for sure...and come back with lots of trouble...
@Prasad :P
@adempewolff is it!!! sure gonna try
@jokerdino where is your funny teeth emoticon?
@ObsessiveFOSS at the very least, he should link to the blog post. Not the entire blog. The link is useless at the moment
@jokerdino :-E
@jokerdino Maybe there should be a prompt with all of the link quidelines(no self-promotion, and include the essential parts) when a user adds a link.
12:55
@Prasad ok
@ObsessiveFOSS might work
hi @aking1012!!!
i was rushing to school earlier. couldn't converse much.
@adempewolff another thing....what should I know before doing this?...I mean...I know I need to backup...but any other things?
@ObsessiveFOSS 50/50 situation - usually I do a quick google translate to see if the link is worth having otherwise the answer goes bye-bye.
@Prasad just make sure to import your old config file for the 2.6.x kernel (should be located here: /boot/config-uname -r``) and compiling isn't too difficult
12:56
@ObsessiveFOSS i think self promotion is a little okay (e.g. i have it in ppa or something) but not ad laden blogs
@adempewolff thanks a lot...I'm gonna try it.... ;-)
@Prasad well, you are just making a kernel (which you can package as a .deb and install and uninstall like all packages) so it's fairly low risk
@jokerdino cant see how his blog relates to the Q - I would consider it spam and has been deleted.
as grub will keep your old kernels in the menu
@fossfreedom thanks. :-))
12:57
@aking1012 I understand a PPA or project page... I still prefer referring to it as "my ppa".
so worst thing that happens is that it doesn't work and you wasted your time
of course my opinion is subsumed by that of @fossfreedom
@adempewolff is that!!...so...there isn't any risk after all...
Hi @aking1012 long time no see!
this is the guide I used for compiling the kernel. but it is specific to some pro-audio needs that I have
@Prasad well, any time you are running commands that need root privileges there is risk (ie. you type the command wrong and overwrite important files)
but done correctly, compiling and installing a new kernel should not affect your old kernels at all
@adempewolff OK ...got it thanks
