I am having problems with this file here: svn.wxwidgets.org/viewvc/wx/wxWidgets/trunk/src/stc/…
If I try to run the file like so, look what happens:
$ ./gen_iface.py
: No such file or directory
But if I run it this way, it works:
python gen_iface.py
The permissions are set to 755.
did you try removing the .py and running it like ./gen_iface?
out of close votes, someone else's turn now
03:37
@RolandTaylor Afraid that doesn't work:
bash: ./gen_iface: No such file or directory
Really???
15
A: ubuntu /usr/bin/env: python: No such file or directory

aSteveHaving been momentarily stumped by this error myself, I thought I'd post how I fixed my problem. My problem was an error: : No such file or directory Which made little sense to me. My problem is that my editor had silently converted the script from Unix LF to Windows CR/LF line-termination. ...

A line-ending issue?
04:01
Good stuff.
I've reduced my installed packages to 5751
Still too many, but good progress.
04:21
Would you like to join the ~win-cross-dev team?
I won't be offended if you don't want to.
Basically the project's goal is to make it possible to compile common apps (like FF, Chromium, Audacity, etc.) for Windows on Ubuntu.
That way developers never need to touch Windows :P
@GeorgeEdison if I can be useful, I'll join :P
Alright... stay tuned for an invite then.
To be honest, I don't know if I can be useful, but we will see :)
Checking my mail :)
Done
04:26
Once LP catches up with the build queue, a lot of packages will be ready.
I've got wxWidgets building on my machine now.
Not much more is needed before I can cross-compile Audacity.
In fact, a 64-bit Windows build of Audacity doesn't seem to even exist.
This will truly be a first.
Topic change: would LP get upset if I hosted code for LAME?
(I'm not a lawyer but there may be legal issues with using LAME.)
Maybe that would be a good question for AU.
I need to update my LP email
Well merge the two I use I mean
Oh I already did
my bad
@GeorgeEdison I don't think so
@GeorgeEdison but that is a good point
hi all....
Maybe I should have been a lawyer.
@Prasad hey
I need to start learning Vala and brush off my dusty C++ skills.
@RolandTaylor he he....hi
04:37
@RolandTaylor Let me know what you think of Vala. I'm really curious.
The thought of GTK+ without the (constant) (casting) and really_stupidly_long_function_names is appealing to me.
@izx need more info?
My reason for not trying Vala so far has been the lack of a good tutorial.
Meaning one that isn't some lazy excuse done by a pro developer for pro developers.
izx
izx
@Prasad: I don't understand the exact problem...
@izx let me try your answer :-)
izx
izx
@Prasad: if it doesn't work, output of xrandr -q please

@izx sorry for late..
i'll uplaod a pic

@izx funny thing now...lol....now they both have same refresh rate but that black screen is still there.....
izx
izx
so refresh rate isn't the issue.did the grub trick change anhything?
noop...that black gap still there for me :-)
do you have the same thing?
what do you have between your login screen and desktop?
same backgrounf wallpaper?
izx
izx
Nothing, it's seamless...
yes
That thing tells me that your refresh rate is...50 Hz
05:01
mmm
mu monitor says 59.7
and nvidia says 60
izx
izx
Huh
.....argh...also the boot splash doesn't work and I did some grub customization recently and now it isn't working either......I think I should reinstall ubuntu soon
izx
izx
Well, that customization may be the reason...
mmm
yes may be
izx
izx
What does your monitor show as refresh rate when you are on the login screen
05:02
i can't hold my self after seeing other ubuntu systems :-)
59.7
same as desktop
I have a backup ubuntu system in my HDD....is there a way to fix this by replacing some files?
izx
izx
well idk, usually it's the grub splash issue, see:
2
Q: Why does my screen blank out for the duration of the Grub boot menu?

hushsUpon booting, when I should see the GRUB menu, my monitor simply says: "No optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1600*1200". If I wait for a short while, Ubuntu starts to boot and it reaches the desktop. So I guess there is no video signal during that time, there's the grub menu but I cant see it and...

i did it before and no improvement yet! mmmm I did ran a script....do you want to see it?
@RolandTaylor: This is starting to get interesting.
izx

@Prasad Sure.

echo "Please enter the best resolution from the list above"
echo "It usualy looks like this >>Mode 0x0323: 1024x768 (+4096), 24 bits<<"
And that doesn't even include gettext, GLib, GTK+, etc.
it isn't for 12.04 but to 10.10 i think...
izx
izx
@Prasad And you ran it...okayyyyyy
yes....
izx
izx
I would copy /etc/default/grub from a LiveCD or something...
(or your backup system)
05:10
but does it fix the plymouth theme?
izx
izx
dunno, ask another question
moral: don't blindly run 10.10 scripts on 12.04... :P
lol
I can't install any OS now....my hardware is dying and if anything goes wrong when installing ubuntu..i'm done
I think it's the CPU....it caused by a bad PSU
the reason why I take so long to response is there is a restart between every 3 or 4 posts :-)
Am I lucky enough to have ubuntu...it take 10 secoonds to boot :-)
@izx thanks.....what should I do to the question?

@izx sure it is....are you using intel?
@izx but nvidia is good for gaming, right?? or is there anything better?
05:24
@ShyamK it is, especially under Linux
AMD Graphics are great on the high end though.

Q: Connecting to a Cisco router via serial

Cygnus XI'm not quite sure if I worded the title correctly, but here's my issue: I want to connect to a heavy duty Cisco router (not quite sure what model, but its an older one) using a USB to serial adapter on my Linux netbook. The netbook has a few USB 2.0 ports and a 10/100 Ethernet port. I plugged t...

@ShyamK yes it is...there is no any other thing to match with
@izx tell me.. if I switch to my onboard graphics..I konw 12.04 will recognize it well...but I have 10.10 installed....It won't automatically switch to it......is there a way to do this?
I have ubuntu 10.10 ,12.04 Kubuntu 12.04, and windows
@RolandTaylor But AMD heats up easy.. needed extra fans and all...
@ShyamK I've had Nvidia heating problems in my laptop so I can't say which is better lol
@RolandTaylor agree.....I have 2 difference nvidia cards and both are nvidia geforce6200and one is asus product and other one is Manli product..when asus card goes smoothly...manly starts to MAKE POPCORN....so there is a BIG fan to protect them ...:-)
05:35
:D
@Prasad Sweet.. so you can make popcorn with your system.. Ain't that gr8 :D
P.S. I'm working on upgrading to 12.10
yes....lol...do you want some....can't add salt...
@RolandTaylor jokerdino has it already!
@Prasad I know lol
I had to clean up my system first
:-D
05:37
@izx guess that depends if the OP is using Linux as a synonym for Ubuntu
@Prasad You might need to backport a newer kernel, depending on how new your onboard graphics is. I got 10.04 working with Ivy Bridge hardware by backporting a 3.2.x kernel...
izx
izx
@adempewolff No, I mean...if he can't get a serial connection from anything, it's not an Ubuntu problem...
@izx not an Ubuntu problem, yes. but it may have an Ubuntu solution (depending on what the actual problem is)!
@adempewolff can't I simply uninstall nvidia and install the default driver or something?
@Prasad what hardware do you have?
izx
izx
@Prasad Onboard Intel HD 2000/3000 or 2500/4000 probably WILL NOT be supported in stock 10.10 kernels....
05:43
@adempewolff please forgive me....heavy lightning hear....i need to go...let's continue this later OKAY?
@Prasad unlike Nvidia, intel drivers aren't proprietary and don't need to be installed separately. okay, catch you later!
izx
izx
Keep your lightning conductor safe! Bye!
haha, I like the description for the crash tag "If you're experiencing a crash in a program you should report it to the author of the program, not post it here"

@izx Possible copy?
possible duplicate?
That question that I just linked is another of his self dupe.
izx
izx
@ShyamK Both are duplicates of the SAME QUESTION from the SAME PERSON
And the original can probably be closed as off topic since it appears to be a bug.
07:48
@izx exaclty..
@jokerdino The original should not be closed. The answers might be considered off-topic, but the question of what those messages mean is not an attempt to report a bug. Somebody should be able to give an explanation for that.
izx
izx
@jokerdino Agree with Eliah, do not close as bug
@ShyamK One of the self-dupes appears to have been manually reposted by the OP. No good excuse for that. But one of them seems to have been migrated here from elsewhere, after it was closed. While cross-posting is generally bad, once your question is closed as off-topic on one site, posting it on another site is not such a bad thing. (Just, when doing so, one should make sure to comment on the original question to make clear that it shouldn't be migrated!)
Right. I haven't close voted yet.
The answer might probably be in the bug report.
@EliahKagan aah ok.. Guess its not totally his fault..
07:53
@ShyamK He reposted at least once. Intentionally.
I am curious. Is this question on topic?
1
Q: Which Country Has All Wifi Channels Open?

BigGeniusAs in US , we can't use anything above 11, which country has all channels available for use on Wifi?

True.. But how do you know that one of it has been migrated as Eliah said?
@jokerdino Probably. But it has a good answer with enough upvotes that the question doesn't appear unanswered, and it provides helpful information. So I'd lean away from closing it.
@EliahKagan That would be the reason why I would close it. It has an helpful answer. So, bye.
@ShyamK This one has a "Migrated from stackoverflow.com" banner below the question.
@jokerdino Well, since the close reason is off-topic, it would probably end up being deleted.
@EliahKagan Hm no.

Here's a brief answer to that one without getting too technical:
0
A: What is a "Asking for cache data failed" warning?

izxWhat do the Asking for cache data failed and Assuming Drive Cache: write-through messages mean? Hard disks usually have a small amount of RAM cache to speed up write operations. The system can write a chunk of data to the disk cache without actually waiting for it to be written to the disk. This...

@jokerdino Right. But that tends to happen, for off-topic of too-localized questions (unless they have really, really, super-duper awesome answers). I didn't mean it would be automatically deleted. Sorry about the confusion.
@EliahKagan And I am thinking it clearly is off topic. How exactly is it related specifically to Ubuntu?
@jokerdino It really isn't. I definitely am not against closing it.
izx
izx
07:59
It may not be off-topic if the question and answer were phrased differently, but as it is they aren't, so VTC'd
Is the situation that a final close-vote is needed and nobody (but me) is available to do it? If so, I have no problem casting my close vote.
