Q: Is there a way to send PM via Askubuntu?

LovinBuntuSometimes I would like to contact one Askubuntu user directly (for example to talk about a subject which is not directly related to Ubuntu). Is there a way to send a message to somebody? (like PM in forums) (sorry if the answer is obvious or already present somewhere-else)

@jrg Yes, now that it's migrated (thx!), I think we should close that question as a duplicate of:

Q: Why doesn't AU allow users to privately communicate?

imwrngI don't know why askubuntu doesn't have a way for users to communicate with each other like as we have in Ubuntu Forums (via private messages). If the reason is preventing malicious activities like spamming, etc., then perhaps we can make "private messaging" a privilege granted only upon reachin...

Another possibility is:

Q: Is there a way to directly contact a user?

Bruce ConnorIf I want to directly contact a user, instead of just commenting on a post of his, is there a way a can do that? This could be useful, for instance, in providing guidance to a new user.

But that question doesn't have as much information in it about rationale and alternatives, and is more specifically related to wanting to reply to something someone said, so I think this one is a better dupe target.
@LordofTime: Back.
@GeorgeEdison Welcome back to /dev/chaos. Would you like the usual serving of /dev/chaos, or would you like a double serving?
:)
@JorgeCastro: What's this about web apps?
@LordofTime: I've connected the two teams (by accepting the invite).
@GeorgeEdison cool, that means that everyone in devs will also get ubuntu bug notices for stackapplet :)
which means that i dont have to be a dev to see the bugs
17:11
Perfect.
(although i see them anyways)
(actually, i see more than just the bugs the dev team will see... :p)
@GeorgeEdison the one advantage to having me on the ubuntu side of the stackapplet bugs, is that i see the crash bugs :P
Yeah, those are marked private by default, right?
okay, now i'm damned hungry
@GeorgeEdison typically they're private yes.
although security bugs can also be marked as embargoed security
private is onw "User Data" i think
@rlemon: Did you hear the good news?
this one's got private, so...
17:25
@GeorgeEdison Justin Bieber was assassinated?
@rlemon lol
@rlemon Er, no... the Stack Exchange API has write access.
...although it is quite limited.
nice
Currently all you can do is post comments.

yea... tardis has nothing compared to the son of Jor-El
I love the doctor... but to be fair I loved superman WAY before I even knew of the doctor. ergo superman will always win. there is no point arguing it. also the ninja turtles will kick everyones ass.
@GeorgeEdison sorry I was at lunch
@GeorgeEdison basically for 12.10 ubuntu will ship with webapp support in Firefox and Chromium
so we can do support for the chat and the site with the package
basically, what if we put all the things stackapps does but in a userscript and it gets shipped in the browser
17:56
@JorgeCastro That sounds neat.
You mention Chromium specifically, does that mean Chrome is excluded?
it doesn't work with chrome right now
it's sort of half working
but it's still alpha stuff
Ah, I see.

@JorgeCastro. Just curious, but why did you remove the word Ubuntu from this question title. askubuntu.com/questions/158572/…
@StephenMyall: it's all about Ubuntu here ;)
@StephenMyall it's redundant, of course you mean ubuntu
of course thats what i meant :-). Where you a school teacher at some stage? You would make great one
18:15
we don't need "on ubuntu" on every question, we would go insane
no, it's just advanced common sense
:)
np , will keep that in mind
Thx
There are exceptions however: askubuntu.com/search?q=ubuntu
Not all of these 4521 are exceptions
yeah, sometimes you can't really avoid it
but for most questions you can, it's really just a standalone sentence with "on ubuntu" at the end
actually, there's alot of editing improvements one can do on the site just by fixing up ones with "ubuntu" in them
Is that a hint?
That alone would make a Copy Editor
18:20
or ones with "problem" are good ones
@JorgeCastro lollerskates
"firefox problem" and so on
No sound still is my favorite (only that I cant think of a sensible canonical answer to that one)
That would make 100 pages or so.
I will look out for these are earn myself some badges
"problem" "issue", etc.
usually you can just read the question and then edit the title to make sense
18:24
This is a good one too: askubuntu.com/…
I may have been guilty of a few of those
Ah, what a lovely adverb
it's non-obvious to most people until you realize you need to unlearn most things to use SE.
there was one post
where someone was like "I noticed you rewrote the question to be grammatically correct, is that how we're supposed to do it?" or something like that
it's like man, is the internet that bad that you have to ask someone that.
i edited a question to make it more generic and thus perhaps more useful to others..
but im wondering if i did a good thing..

Q: How to uninstall a program installed through Wine

legospace9876I installed Picasa 3.9 with Wine, but I did not like it, and now I want to delete it. I tried uninstalling Picasa with the option from Picasa help menu but it didn't work. How do I fully uninstall Picasa from Wine?

what do you think?
18:30
@SirCharlo i've done that. it's usually good
@SirCharlo good idea.
um, completely purge ~/.wine/drive_c to uninstall a single program is a poor answer imo
It get s rid of the program though ;P
well sudo rm -Rf / get's rid of a conf file in /etc too...
I learned that the only way to be sure you removed a program in Windows is format c:
18:33
you're right, i should've thought of that
:P
the comments were removed, but the op told me that this was the only app installed in that prefix
which is why i proposed that solution
someone then prompted me to post my comment as an answere
okay. if we're making it generic we should think about that. i personally would be pissed if i did that and it nuked stuff
i wonder if regshot runs in wine. probably does. so maybe advice on backing up the registry and purging directories in drive_c would be appropriate?
@aking1012 i was just making a statement its not an all inclusive list
that's all
what regshot?
if i felt it were necessary that all my acronyms that I use were listed, there would be a CW post of my own there that comprised 25 additional used-solely-by-me expressions.
but since most of them arent commonplace here, there's no need
by the way... DAMN, it is raining out there!
18:36
@SirCharlo a utility by russinovich to snapshot the registry
wow
i was looking for something like this earlier today
think "generate a diff for the windows registry"

@GeorgeEdison yeah so basically this link I gave you
would give us native SE support in ubuntu out of the box
You Know What to Do Next(tm)
@Roland might find it interesting that i'm wrapping up xmiparser, glade files, and trying to separate code from declarations to make sketching at intermediate steps possibly
@JorgeCastro Out of the box? That is awesome.
@aking1012 Sounds interesting indeed :)
right, now you see why I was excited
basically, it's stackapplet out of the box
they do notifications, launchers, etc.
hell, really, you could probably do the entire lens in this right?
Possibly.
I'll read through that page and see.
18:51
/me nods
but hey, even just notifications, the message integration, and the launcher integration would be a big win
I'll find out about the rest.
you lost me at "HUD Actions" I immediately disabled HUD when it overrode Alt
shrug, hud is awesome
I want to do things like alt -> "ask a question"
Do the integration scripts get bundled with Unity?
@JorgeCastro I agree it was a great idea. I think it should have been super-H or something though. Overriding something ubiquitous is either thank us for forcing your workflow or nope you lose.
I don't have any shortcuts that are just Alt
@GeorgeEdison yep, there's a bunch
hold on let me just show you the question
18:56
open built-in menus isn't alt for you?
it's alt + a key for me
Can I install the new version of Unity that includes web app integration on Precise?
Is there some PPA I can use for that?
@JorgeCastro okay i see where that's going, but it's over-riding an intuitive behavior
I didn't even know alt by itself opened a menu
@GeorgeEdison yep

Q: How do I install and use Ubuntu's web application integration?

Jorge CastroI've read that Ubuntu will support web applications out of the box, how can I set this up on my computer to play with it?

@GeorgeEdison what browser do you use?
Firefox 14.
18:59
@JorgeCastro just checked and fair point. i need to re-enable hud and see if it still does key-stealing. when i checked probably during alpha alt-F didn't work to get to the file menu b/c hud took focus
@GeorgeEdison ok this will replace your FF but don't worry it's the same version
hey @GeorgeEdison was this ever fixed:
I noticed this when I recovered my StackApplet configs from my previous OS install. This config included a user from a closed beta of a StackExchange Site, and that user data was removed when it was shut down. The system says "Unknown Error" in place of a nonexistent user. Is this a bug, or is this by-design? If it is a bug, could it be written to be saying "Unknown User" rather than "Unknown Error"? Attached is a screenshot to show the issue. OS: Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty), 64bit
StackApplet
Low / Confirmed
Not really... but it's irrelevant for 1.6alpha now.
@JorgeCastro When I go to install unity-webapps-preview, it tries to install Chromium.
yeah they include chromium for some reason
you can remove it after though
19:04
Okay (I say that because my Ubuntu partition is really low on disk space).
@GeorgeEdison you might want to mark it as "Won't Fix" and make a note of "Obsolete" in there on the StackApplet project part
i'll "Won't Fix" in ubuntu too if you want
@GeorgeEdison i don't want to nag people about bugs, its not my style. Except that error was still happening yesterday on 12.04, so... :P
1.5 and then 1.6 needs to be put into Debian :P
1.6 isn't ready yet.
when its time is come :p
19:06
sometimes writing utilities for ubuntu makes me feel like this:
i dont want to rush the dev cycle xD
@LordofTime +1 to that
It won't let me remove Chromium - it's a dependency of unity-webapps-preview.
@ObsessiveFOSS !olleH
19:09

@ObsessiveFOSS "How do you like your failsauce" is the current topic

19:13
@GeorgeEdison bugs.launchpad.net/stackapplet/+bug/619424 <--- okay for me to turn to "Incomplete" so it can just expire in some number of days?
(its in the StackApplet project, not ubuntu)
dislikes seeing "New" status bugs from ages ago
or rather just opinion would work too
:p
Opinion.
its George's call though
he runs StackApplet
i dont want to be screwing with bugs unless he's OK with it :P
@LordofTime dev == god in some contexts
@aking1012 indeed.
@aking1012 unless the bug is an ubuntu bug
then BugControl == god
fair point
19:16
with LPAdmins being UberGods
and Canonical being the Supreme Beings.
happens. sometimes even gods are over-ridden. but if they do it too much then content is lost.
mhm
i mean if the bug was against the Ubuntu package I'd mark it as "Wishlist" and "Triaged" according to Ubuntu BugSquad policies
and then upstream it
in this case it never was filed against the package (probably wasnt in Debian/Ubuntu yet)
now... THIS BUG was one I filed, and is filed against both upstream and the package in ubuntu
so the ubuntu package part falls under BugControl Godliness
the upstream part falls to George
i still say ubuntufy.com should be a registered domain for I want this to work from ppa. Here's $5
WELL, TIME TO GO HOME
@aking does that site even exist?
nope...but it should
19:21
we could create it :p
wouldnt mind managing yet another site
already close to flat broke. i can't go about creating projects with scope like that with no funding
points to him purchasing the domain
all you would need to do is fill it with web stuffs
i think i can get a .com for... oh... $6 right now?

Q: How do I comment on an answer?

Scott RitchieI see a bunch of comments on someone else's answer to several questions and I'd like to add one but I don't see how. I can provide my own answer, but all I really want to do is add a little bit to someone else's.
