Good Night

hello world
what command could I use to remotely, securely and rapidly (with compression) copy the content of one folder (its subfolders, files, whether hidden or not, symlink content, ...), so that any further copy would only make diffs rather than copy it all again ?
wouldn't the computers need to transfer the data to each other to compare anyways?
bob
bob
@mateosalta are you talking to me ? No computerA could have a copy of what computerB has
but if I'm asking the question it's because I don't know the answer...
@bob , so it would compare by file names and not byte comparisons
bob

17:13
@mateosalta well as I said I don't know the answer, I just know the question. But I guess it could do a hash of every file to check whether it's been modified, or just see what's the last time it was modified, for example
but in any case I'm sure there are many tools to do that sort of back up in linux, it doesn't matter how they work internally, it only matters that they get the job done
well there is scp ss64.com/bash/scp.html , I suppose you could pipe in the output from a command that checks for modified in the last so many hours, howtoforge.com/finding-files-on-the-command-line
... I think, anyways I haven't tried it.
you're saying how do i use a git-like filesystem i think
hi
I got this error when I tried to install 12.04 on my usb stick Could not move syslinux files in "/media/6422-CABB": [Errno 2] No such file or directory. Maybe "/media/disk" is not an Ubuntu image?
it's 11.10 with startup disk creator
hoped someone here could give me a quick answer..
17:34
I think that usb booting is hit or miss, I would try a different software to make the usb , like unetbootin , help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
+1
there's also a manual question on-site ... i found it by accident so it shouldn't be too hard to search for
I noticed the one I downloaded form ubuntu.com/downloads/VERSION...
was at 702 mb and the one form ubuntu.com -> downlaod was at 698
will try that one.
It has worked before with startup disk creator...
i think this may have been a rhetorical question ~= complaint about the oversize occasionally bug
i don't mind complaints, but they shouldn't be phrased as questions
well
I has hopeing for a quick answer, so I went here, I know questions/answers is what the site is made for, but still , was hoping or a quick solution to this silly problem.
Solution, use a cd, buy a usb cd drive.
17:41
that was quick
and simple
@mateo_salta that's a HUGE work around, and it's quite stupid, this usb stick and this method has worked before...
@mateo_salta all the shops are closed, it's 19:42...
was hoping to get this started before the soccer final (EM).
@Alvar - have you ever tried to optimise a distro to fit on a CD? i suspect you should file a bug with startup-disk-creator unless it already exists
or simply use unetbootin as was suggested
@aking1012 I just downloaded the ISO from here: releases.ubuntu.com/precise and tried to install it with startup-disk-creator, I erased the drive before I did.
none of what you just said changes anything i said
17:44
@aking1012 isn't unetbootin and wubi the same? is confused around that...
no. it isn't
@aking1012 I didn't understand your question really...
the method they use is such a roundabout way of doing things, basically they trick the computer into booting the kernel, and then loopback the directory it needs, so every distribution and version is different, you are getting that error because It can't find the files, possibally because of how it was created.
basically i'm saying suck it up. it sounds like complaining
@mateo_salta so the installation with disk creator is based on the state of the current system?
17:46
It needs new configuration files, If I remember right
will try a different iso and if that doesn't work then it's unetbootin
@mateo_salta don't get baited. it's classifiable as complaint and ignore...much like the katz how do i do different DEs myriad of related questions
yeah, I've wasted hours trying to boot usb dirves, I need to buy one of these, would be awesome zalman.com/eng/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=431
my 16G usb works fine for everything i've tried with unetbootin. if it works use it. if you fight what works it's a faction war(see libav and ffmpeg)
I would want it for more that just linux cd's and the setup is a pain, this hardware vurturalizes an external cd drive so the iso's boot exactly like the cd's would.
well thanks a lot! unetbootin worked great! :)
sounds kind-of like Justice
sorry for sounding like I was just complaining...
awesome, glad it worked
now 12.04 here I come! :D
17:53
awesome...glad unetbootin worked
I love a fresh install been over a year since...
cya on the other side :P
how about this @aking1012
listening
izx
izx
@mateo_salta: that Zalman drive is da bomb....stick an SSD in and bam! Also the roundabout way you describe is ultimately because of the way the BIOS was designed 25+ years ago....I'm told no such hack is needed if you have an IA-64 machine :p
did they build it into the motherboard?
that would be cool, is that because of UEFI
17:58
is there a way to make two videos in one using PITIVI?
I mean, two videos playing side by side and the audio tracks too
i don't see a justifiable use case for that
@mateo_salta sounds like a nice track
@aking1012 I like the one you put up too
generally anything blue stahli is pretty great
i've never seen a profile that negative ... speaking of points
18:03
or kdenlive is able to do that?
@rogcg clarify what you want to do. i'm a fan of kdenlive generally, but i'm not sure i know what you want
@aking1012 I mean, play two videos side by side
also the audio
so let's say I want to make a movie of me playin violin and piano, so I'll put both videos side by side
got it?
two squares, each one showing a video
and syncing the audio
yes, but how would you control it? like blueray has picture in picture but it's atrocious to work with
@aking1012 whats the best approach? I have no idea of how to make it
i would just make a new vid/aud stream that is the combination of the two. i'ld use sox to mix the two audio streams together and ffmpeg/libav to sort of join the video parts
18:08
I rember vlc was able to do play multiple videos at one time, might still have an option, wiki.videolan.org/How_to_play_multiple_instances_of_VLC I rember playing 10 videos at once before on windows once
@aking1012 a better example, I'd like to make a video like this. youtube.com/watch?v=1yydcG9woWA
not with the same editing level, but a simple one, just playing two videos together. Is that possible with kdenlive? If yes, any resource for that?
i haven't seen a resource for that. it's not a simple thing to do on the linux side(possible, but not simple)
@aking1012 ok. thanks anyways.
oh, so you need a professional video editing software
@mateo_salta kdenlive not possible?
izx
izx
18:13
@mateo_salta I was being sarcastic about the Itanium, but it may well be possible on pure EFI. BTW here's the exact reason for the hack:
looks cool, I would try it, if they let you reside the videos, just re-size and try to put one on a different time line,

INT 13H, INT 13h, or INT 19 is shorthand for BIOS interrupt call 13hex, the 20th interrupt vector in an x86-based computer system. The BIOS typically sets up a real mode interrupt handler at this vector that provides sector-based hard disk and floppy disk read and write services using cylinder-head-sector (CHS) addressing. INT is an x86 instruction that triggers a software interrupt, and 13hex vector passed to the instruction (interrupts start at zero, and are labeled with hexadecimal values). Overview Under real mode operating systems, such as MS-DOS, calling INT 13h would jump into...

The charade continues until the kernel intercepts the 13h call, cries Y NO DISK and panics with no vfs sync...unless it has the option and you have told it where to find the root disk in a non-standard location

lol, that's good

Rofl!
so anyone in the room want to get in on fixing all the python/developer-portal tutorials to get them up to date? (by that i mean a tree where there's a version for 11.10, 12.04, and Q that all work as i think it should be done )
i noticed that recently, the non-working ones got nuked instead of just noting that they only work for 11.x
no, i am not a canonical employee

@aking1012 I dit it! Just used composition
18:31
@rogcg good. if you have a tutorial on the thing, maybe you should add it as a self-answered question here. that way others can use it. myself would probably have done it a different way, but that is the bonus of the linux thing
@aking1012 ok. Ill get more experience with this video editing and will make a tutorial
experience isn't necessarily required for a tut. if you just did it one way, then tell ppl about it. if they don't like it, oh well. at least you put out how you did it

The fact that we slow down on weekends is testament to Ubuntu's penetration into the business/professional world....
18:39
that's a really fair-ish point. i would also think about the fact that it could be that lackadaisical sysadmins contribute traffic on weekdays.

also i'm a little odd on your sabdfl tag since the user doesn't actually exist on AU SE\

Q: To active update manager

nasifI dont have update manager in my netbook. My company seems like disabled it. I am still on ubuntu 10. many software never updated.can any one please help me out.

i think what that OP really may need to know is how to access the respositories for EoL releases, since they may be using 10.10 rather than 10.04 LTS.
19:40
hm, the "company" may have set him up without privileges, I think we need more info
my help is find a better company
or buy your own computer
fair enough
do you know if any manufactures made ubuntu systems where they "locked down" certian features because of support, I remember some older linux system ones were like that..
bash is biting me again.

Great answer: Dropbox install stuck at 99%, how do I fix it? (and any dpkg errors) http://askubuntu.com/questions/154671/dropbox-install-stuck-at-99-how-do-i-fix-it-and-any-dpkg-errors/154698?atw=1#154698 #apt
@GeorgeEdison bite early and bite often right?
maybe that came across wrong. if you put it together well, then early failures are a good thing b/c they chip away at total failures
Actually, it turned out the be make.
I forgot that $ is a special character to make.
$ for po in `echo po/*.po`; do po2ts -i $po -o ${po/.po/.ts}; done
/bin/sh: 1: Bad substitution
Bad substitution???
hi
12.04 is nice! :D
it's so much faster :D
Ah, so it seems like /bin/sh was getting used instead of /bin/bash :P
It gets fun when you're escaping shell code inside an eval block inside a makefile.
20:04
interesting, later
why were you escaping shellcode in a shell script?

Q: Anyone else experiencing high rates of linux server crashes today?

Bron GondwanaJust today, Sat June 30th - starting soon after the start of the day GMT. We've had a handful of blades in different datacentres as managed by different teams all go dark - not responding to pings, screen blank. They're all running Debian Squeeze - with everything from stock kernel to custom 3....

now thats rough.
jrg
jrg
21:16
So far I've been spared, but I think its because I don't have ntp running on any of my machines.
(my hardlock was unrelated, i screwed up apache configs to make it become a memory hog)
user19161
@jrg My internet was slow the past two days, and it seems the file I downloaded from the Debian mirrors was corrupted.
jrg
jrg
ok...
did you ask on the site?
user19161
@jrg No, I suspect it is an earthquake somewhere in the world.
jrg
jrg
@JasperLoy so you didn't ask on U&L?
i mean, i can't help if you don't have a question.
user19161
@jrg No, I am not here for help, I'm here to chat with you.

21:30
ok...

@jrg In the span of 5 hours, that question has had over 10k views. Wow. Just wow.

@GeorgeEdison It was at 7K when I posted it.
That's unbelievable. I wish my questions were that popular.

Don't we all?
I'm sure being on the front page of HN helps.
user19161
@GeorgeEdison Maybe many are having the same problem?
So would Ubuntu kernels be affected?
jrg
jrg
21:52
Only if they are running ntp, yes.
Ubuntu desktop does not, so i don't think most of us have to worry.
user19161
Er, but everyone uses ntp.
jrg
jrg
The ntp service
> The work-around is to just turn off ntpd. If ntpd already issued the adjtimex call, you may need to disable ntpd and reboot to be 100% safe.
my ubuntu server doesn't have it, looks like it's safe as well.
Yay - we will survive the dreaded leap second of 2012!

Perhaps. The day is still early, at least in your timezone.
I may get a lockup before midnight, it's only 6PM here. ;P
user19161
@GeorgeEdison It's 1st July here already.
22:00
Unfortunately the blades all supposedly had kdump configured, but they died so hard that kdump didn't trigger - and they had console blanking turned on. I've disabled console blanking now, so fingers crossed I'll have more information after the next crash. -- oh...god...
A single - package related - hard-lock on linux servers? WOOOOOO I get completely unexplained hard-locks for no reason at all on Windows.
I sort of have translations working :)
Unfortunately if the string isn't translated, it's mysteriously blank...

Q: How can I rename all files in the current directory having a particular extension to another extension?

AndrewSuppose that in my current/working directory I have five files: file1.xvg file2.xvg file3.xvg file1.eps file2.eps Is there any way that I can rename all files in the current/working directory with the extension .xvg and give them the new extension .txt (leaving the .eps files alone)? Q: Should I feel bad about not giving a bounty to an answer on a bountied question?

Emerson HsiehI asked this question a while ago and gave a bounty of 50 rep to it. I received some good answers in no time and went through them. Although they didn't fix my problem. Next the bounty was over and I was left with the "Grace Period". So I went through the answers again and tried the solutions....

jrg
jrg
@AskUbuntuMeta you should feel very bad and guilty.
23:49
build/nitroshare::
    for po in `find po/*.po`
    do
        po2ts -i $$po -o `echo $${po} | sed s/.po$$/.ts/`
        sed -i -e 's/\(type="unfinished"\)>/\1\/>/' -e '/<\/translation>/d' $$po
    done
    lrelease po/*.ts
Looks like fun, huh?
jrg
jrg
If your idea of 'fun' is really weird regexes, then yes.
I really wish that wasn't necessary but po2ts emits malformed XML (well not really, but it won't work either way).
And to top it off, it doesn't even work :P
