Q: Installing/updating R 3.5 on Ubuntu 18.04

AndreyItoI've recently acquired a machine with Ubuntu 18.04 on it. I installed R simply with: sudo apt-get install r-base And when I call $ R in console, it starts up with: R version 3.4.4 (2018-03-15) -- "Someone to Lean On" Copyright (C) 2018 The R Foundation for Statistical Computing Platform: x86_...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix, you don't know where I live so here goes… Totally untested by me … dconf dump / > dconf-backup.txt will create a file that has all the settings of gsettings. If you then delete ~/.config/dconf/user, log out and log back, you should get an "original" system. Do a dump again. Compare the two dumps. Then restore your original settings using dconf load / < dconf-backup.txt.

@Rinzwind are you an expert re. inotify-tools?

watch
dog!
This is all you need:
#!/usr/bin/python
import time
from watchdog.observers import Observer
from watchdog.events import FileSystemEventHandler

class MyHandler(FileSystemEventHandler):
def on_modified(self, event):
# here your action

if __name__ == "__main__":
event_handler = MyHandler()
observer = Observer()
observer.schedule(event_handler, path='/data/', recursive=False)
observer.start()

try:
while True:
time.sleep(1)
except KeyboardInterrupt:
observer.stop()
observer.join()
ah formatting got borked :=)

@DKBose Or you could sign on as Guest and compare to your regular account? That sounds like it might be easier...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Or you can just run gsettings list-recursively | grep -i monitor or something like that to see if you can find something relevant? I don't have multiple monitors and so can't suggest more appropriate terms.

Actually it's been flagged as dupe and it says to run dump.

Q: Group ownership changes by itself on restart

UmangI changed window managers and now need to be able to change /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness (because the new wm cannot change screen brightness natively). I created a user group called brightness, added myself to the group, and ran sudo chown root:brightness /sys/class/backlight...

Q: Guide to install Ubuntu with LUKS and SSD-caching

Ole TangeI would like to use my SSD disk as cache for the full file system. I also would like full disk encryption. A normal Ubuntu 18.04 installation makes it relatively easy to do full disk encryption, but does not include a way to do SSD caching. I have been able to make an installation with bcache ...

@Fabby If there were life-forms on other planets they couldn't be called people :P Right now your best chance of a friend from another planet would be a "pet rock" haha
@DKBose Thanks for all your efforts. The dupe suggested dconf dump / > dump.dconf which indeed seems to list everything. I didn't see anything that struck a bell so it may have been a compiz or xorg setting I changed. I'm annoyed at myself for not remembering what I change :(
