Q: How can I create a Scala BigInt that represents an integer longer than a Scala Long?

dogwoodIn Scala 2.12.7, how can I create a BigInt from an integer initially longer than a Long? I'm looking for something simple where I write an expression that when evaluated is my original long integer expressed as a BigInt.

Q: Consistent kernel panic on `dpkg --configure -a` for Ubuntu 18.04

Sage GerardI'm among the many with NVIDIA driver woes on a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 instance. Right now I'm being forced to run dpkg --configure -a when I try things like sudo apt purge nvidia* However, doing so will always reproduce a kernel panic. In the GUI, this presents as a freeze. Since I am using a GeFor...

Q: Are core dump files created somewhere in these cases?

Tim$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern |/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P which I guess means to pipe the core dump to the apport script. Will the apport script write the input core dump to some file? If yes, where will the file be created? (My /var/crash/ doesn't have a core dump file from ...

Split review 2 votes dupe/2 votes too broad on this question, but it's not a fair duplicate of the suggested target question. I need one CV from a reviewer to close this question as too broad.

Q: Unable to create a proper PEM for Redis Desktop Manager

jacek.ciachOn Ubuntu, I have a problem to establish a connection to redis server using SSH tunnel and SSH key with Redis Desktop Manager (RDM). What are the symptoms? I can connect to the server where redis is running using "plain" ssh and my id_rsa, other utilities which use either the SSH agent or keys...

@karel The comment the OP refers to was from me. OMG, what have I done...?
@PerlDuck You didn't do anything. It's probably just a random occurrence.
Yes. Some of my comments are indeed random. ;-)

Hello..
Yesterday, I updated my ubuntu to 18.04.. After doing that.. My GUI has this new font.. and it gives me cancer everytime I look at it.. I looked up on the website how can I change it..

Changes I made to topbar did work... But the changes I made to other don't work.. for some reason.

Let me show picture of the font
The font looks pretty to me. But taste differs. :-)
It might not look that ugly to you.. but font size is large. I always keep small fonts :(
My IDE's font is 10.. But that font looks like 14-15
So you are talking about Firefox's tab font as opposed to its title bar font?
No that thing is everywhere.. Chrome, Firefox, IntelliJ, VSCode..

You can't change them inside the applications..
I tried changing this.. Nothing works.. except the interface one
Meanwhile on the phone: "Hello? Am I speaking to HP? I ordered a LaserJet but you sent me printer instead!"

lol
eeee. gives me a feeling that I messed up?
Oops. I missed an "a". Damn. Too late to edit.

As it happens.. IntellJ does let you do it.. :-)

Any have strong opinions about 18.04 vs 18.10?
Any killer features that came in 18.10 that are worth a wipe/reinstall?
22:17
I want to try 18.10. If all your apps will run properly on 18.10 so why not, I think it's great!
22:29
My cousin set up a PAN and his ip route looks messed up, he can't ping 8.8.8.8, any suggestions?
:)
Fastest Gun In The West problem: Looking at screenshot
That nameserver looks wrong
@AaronHall No, that's internal Ubuntu.
and my ip route has my wifi router...
it should resolve to the DG.
22:32
his should be his ethernet, it's a desktop
IDK what you're talking about.
I'm a networking... noob.
Forget I asked that.
He has no DG. (Default gateway)
so the only communication he has is based on broadcast.
8.8.8.8 is not a broadcast address, but a routed address.
I've been googling "Network is unreachable" because of the error from when he tries to ping.
Nath, he needs to enter 192.168.1.1(probably) as the default gateway.
where does he do that?
The PAN will then use broadcast (good) and the WAN will use routing.
@AaronHall Where did he set up his PAN?
(Which OS? Ubuntu?)
22:38
IDK what those things are.
PAN = Personal Area Network, WAN = Wide Area Network, LAN = Local Area Network, MAN = Metropolitan Area network
He's using Ubuntu 12.04
@AaronHall Urgh...
"broadcast" and "routing" - I don't know exactly what is meant by those.
Last time I used that was 4 years ago
@AaronHall Try telling him he has no Default Gateway on his LAN
if he doesn't know what that is, I need to know what he did exactly to set up his PAN.
Then I'll be able to tell him what to do.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
22:42
He doesn't know what a default gateway is.
@AaronHall My left telepathic antenna broke off, so I can't reach into his system telepathically any more...
:P
I've been asking him how he set up his PAN, and he doesn't seem to know.
He says he plugged his cell phone into his computer and it "auto-did it"
:/
@AaronHall That needs a support session with him in chat...
IDK what the Plug and Pray did...
Yeah, no joke, I've got him on a phone call and he's been texting me screenshots taken with his phone.
@AaronHall :D
@AaronHall Is he a user here?
22:46
no
Anywhere on the network?
nope
I'm having him send me more screenshots...
ok, lets start with the basics:
ip address
ip a is the same thing, right?
jrg
jrg
Yeah
22:50
@AaronHall yup
So he has a PAN only: no Ethernet and no WiFi.
(thinking)
ok, I don't know why my cousin has to be so "extra" but he gets ideas and tries them out, and manages to screw up his poo every time...
@AaronHall Tell him you're on a 100$ / hour support call right now and that he has to pay you back for this.
:D :D :D
That'll stop him from doing stupid shit in the future!
.
wrong window, sorry
jrg
jrg
~ifconfig got replaced by the ip tools @Fabby~ and i'm too slow
22:53
@jrg I know.
@jrg :D
@jrg not on 12.04 :P
jrg
jrg
@Rinzwind You're right, i missed that message.
@AaronHall try the following:
ip route add default via 192.168.1.1 dev pan1
then try pinging 8.8.8.8
22:58
Ping me with the result, as I'm working the queues in the background.
ok
he's finally typing the command (I had to text it to him... char by char dictation is so painful...)
should that be sudo?
He says it says "operation not permitted"
@Fabby ^^
yes :P
What the wizard said... (Yes)
;-) :-)
k
@Fabby "next hop has invalid gateway"
Urgh... (thinking)
23:05
delete default
ip route delete default via 192.168.1.1 dev pan1
he didn't put the second 1.
sorry for my cousin.
@AaronHall I was about to ask that.
@AaronHall Your cousin should indeed not be madding with these things.
He's sending me a screenshot of the ping...
(did you tell him about to 100$/h?)
23:07
no joke, he's incompetent...
We've had a conversation about how this is not my job, and I'm a programmer, and if he breaks his computer, he needs to get it fixed before I help him keep learning Python...
Hey, seeing your cousin doesn't know what he's doing:
@AaronHall Why did he set up a PAN?
(and how?)
he wanted to get a file from his phone onto his computer. Yes that does not follow that he should set up a PAN.
Lemme rephrase: what is he trying to do?
@AaronHall ah.
indeed. Android or iPhone?
a PAN is for wearables: to hook up a watch or IP phone to your computer.
I think he's trying to meth up his life, but he doesn't admit it, so I can't keep asking him "are you doing drugs!?"
Android.
@AaronHall :D is he???
;-)
@AaronHall so he plugged the USB cable into his PC and wants to transfer a file???
he should delete the PAN, go to his phone in the settings
(which Androind version?)
23:11
I pointed out his schizo-typic behavior, asked him about any diagnoses he may have had, and he says a psychologist told him he has an "external locus of control."
how do you delete the PAN? he has said he'd like to do that.
grin
@AaronHall How did he set it up?
Does he have WiFi?
if he did, he replaced his WiFi by a PAN...
he should use a cable to hook up his PC to the Internet now until this gets resolved.
He's very proactive for someone with an external locus of control...
yeah well... It is what it is.
Does he know which android version he has?
7? 8?
it's a desktop, I don't think it has a wifi antenna
ah! GOOD!
:D
23:15
8.0.0
with a security patch?
OK, so he should go to the phone and go to settings and.
(looking it up on my 80
this wizard is now a wiZZZZZZZZZZZZard :=)
night!
@AaronHall connected devices
then USB
then MTP
Does he need it to be connected via usb while he's doing it?
23:18
and then the phone shows up as a USB stick and he can transfer files
@AaronHall Depends on the phone: if it's grayed out: yes.
he's not seeing "connected devices"
he sees "connections"
I'm telling him to plug in
tell him to tap the looking glass and type "USB"
@AaronHall Good.
From the output of his ip address command I can see he does not have the network cable plugged in.
he should plug that in too.
@AaronHall Can I go for a quick leak?
(3 minutes)

From the output of his ip address command I can see he does not have the network cable plugged in.
23:25
@AaronHall back
So? what happened in the meantime?
I told him what I quoted, and I'm going back to making him try another cable on his desktop (he has a printer and a playstation, I'm making him unplug his playstation and try that cable...)
he's verifying the playstation has internet, and I'm going to make him use that cable...
Working the queues while he's doing that.
Ping me with any new information, please?
P.S. 00:30 AM here now...
@Fabby he plugged the ethernet cable, ip a didn't change, so I'm telling him to reboot.
I doubt that will do it though...
this is weird.
If that doesn't solve the problem, tell him to unplug the phone, and leave only the Ethernet cable in
and provide the output to ip address
yeah...
he's got a vpn on his phone... does that make a diff?
23:43
(thinking)
It depends WTF he did with the PAN.
just unplug the damn phone and let's get his PC connected to the Internet.
0:-)
@AaronHall 00:44 AM now and calling oit quits at 1 AM
fair enough
23:56
@AaronHall 5 minutes and counting.
(Sorry: need to get up in 7 hours)
ok, I'm going to let him try a couple more things, we'll try a live thumb-drive boot, ensure the hardware works, back up his stuff, then reinstall.
he shouldn't be on 12.04 anyways
he is supposed to have an 18.04 live thumbdrive
@Fabby ^^^^
