Hello! I was looking for an IRC askubuntu channel and found this.... can I join this room from a chat client?

@Seth can you play at all

no
@JoshuaBesneatte sadly no.

ok, this is better than nothing... and I guess its cool that we all have the same names here :) how is everyone?

doing alright, doing alright.

good evening!

1:09 AM
likewise :)
has anyone here seen this question I posted: askubuntu.com/questions/1077070/… am I losing my mind or what?

been a while I don't log in this chat, how have you guys and gals been?

stoked for fall weather!

yo @NathanOsman, got a minute?

@Seth so we have a lot of new villagers
but literally no librarians

yay
aw

Q: Remote process logs in local system

Pankaj CheemaI have a process (for example mongod) that is running on the server and printing the logs continuously. I want these logs on my local system in real-time. How can I achieve that? Is there any tool for this? I am currently using Ubuntu and seeking guidance in Ubuntu also for the same.

1 hour later…
5:29 AM
@Seth what's up?

@NathanOsman I had a python question, but I figured it out.
I was being an idiot.

Ah, cool.

thanks for responding though!

(The figuring out part, that is.)
Did you notice I got a new picture? :P

I did!
Saw it on GitHub first, actually.
It looks good.

5:30 AM
I don't think the exposure is high enough though.
It could stand to be a bit brighter.

It is a tad dark, true. But the detail is good.

How the times are changing... today people are complaining about an extra-long boot time of 50 seconds.

@Takkat yes bad, much to long ;)
remembers the times where you could make coffee and waffles while loading a game on C-64

I remember the times when we had to first power on the computer, then switch on the coffee machine. go to the bathroom, talk to collegues, and then, eventually log in.
@Videonauth lol - Coffee always involved!

well loading a game on C-64 from kassette took about 30mins to 1 hour
depending on the game :P

It was worth every minute!

for a game which was max 60353 bytes big

7:15 AM
That was in the incredibly huge tens of kB range!

:)
but to be honest, the games back that time where far more intriguing and good, took me almost a full year to play through Gianna Sisters (no saving back in that time)

7:44 AM
@Takkat Yes! CP/M booted in like 1 second! (Read track 0, read track 1 from the floppy disk)
>

@Fabby true that :) still coudn't bear the amber colored screens mostly delivered with CP/M systems
here they have run on 50Hz power net frequency and gave you horrible hedaches

I bought the smallest Barco colour TV that could display 80*40 characters. That cost 1000DEM at the time and was cheaper in Germany than in Belgium, where it was made!

1000 DEM was like 1 month of summer job back then. (1200 DEM if you were lucky)

yeah
today you wouldnt be able to make this in one month
~~500 euro

7:50 AM
The Atari ST monochrome (black and white) could do 70 Hz which was really revolutionary then.

yeah the amiga screen did the same

Yup!

good ol times

A: Did personal computers ever support 8" floppies?

FabbyThis is the stone age we're talking about! Back when I was a kid and dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, I: bought a small colour TV, a keyboard, 64K of RAM, a Z80, an 6MHz crystal, a wax pen, a copper board and a second-hand 180KB single-sided 5 1/4" floppy drive had a friend that already had a...

not really - there was no Internet

7:51 AM
There were BBSes! and FidoNet!

well i enjoyed to play the games i had without the possibility to read up on solutions back then

Line calls made you poor.

I remember someone in the computer club saying:

@Takkat never heard of captain crunch then? eh?

Hah! 2400 BAUD? No one needs 2400 BAUD! That's too fast to read the document while you're downloading it!

7:53 AM
yeah usually 300 baud

1200 is just fine

was fairly enough

@Videonauth That was too slow.

nah not really :)
but then 16400 baud modems, well that was like flying

Isn't the Fax specs that slow until today for backwad compatibility reasons?

7:54 AM
used an acoustic coupler a long long time

I remember a company upgrading from 11300 to 56000 and paying back the modems withing a year.

yes pretty much fax runs at 9k baud or something

@Takkat 9600 BAUD

no wonder :)

I have a job interview in 1h and need to prep. Please don't ping me

7:56 AM
is tempted
:D
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

8:46 AM
@Fabby oh? OH? we have someone comming in 25 minutes for a job interviw
@Videonauth >:)
he should have started with the 2nd part :-P

@Rinzwind :P :D

last name is Vermeulen? >:)

You know my first name and I know yours and I'm having an interview with Pier, not you.
@Videonauth is "Deutsch ist nur meine fünfte Sprache, also brauche ich Grammatik und Rechtschreibprüfung, um gutes Deutsch zu schreiben." correct?
o/

also -> deswegen
, um ein gutes ...
als, im using the old grammar and writing rules still so maybe reconfirm the second line best with @ByteCommander

o/
what's up?

8:58 AM
It's OK. This company offers German classes and I don't know if the interviewer even speaks German.

if it's about "Deutsch ist nur meine fünfte Sprache, also brauche ich Grammatik und Rechtschreibprüfung, um gutes Deutsch zu schreiben.", that sentence looks fine to me.

Pier Andrea Delise sounds more Italian than German to me/

deswegen is good too, but I find "ein gutes Deutsch" sounds wrong

@ByteCommander Danke!

rather make it an adjective "um gut deutsch zu schreiben"

9:01 AM
@ByteCommander for me using the old writing rules the oposite sounds wrong:) so open for dabate LOL
well shows that im old

@Videonauth I'd rather use modern German than middle German!
:D :D :D

you said you have an interview in an hour an hour ago, so is it finished already or just about to start?

@Fabby well having used the writing style rules for 2/3 of my life then they decided to have the "Rechtschreibreform" where they changed some words and writing rules and so on for official german writing , well i call it "Schlechtschreibreform" still.

9:35 AM
:D :D :D
@ByteCommander Just finished.

Good interview and they asked me if I was willing to move to Paris...
:-)

Paris, huh? Nice.

I told them: if you add 18% to my salary: yes, as Paris is 18% more expensive than Germany...

Just don't get a car there, parking and traffic is a nightmare :D

9:37 AM
@ByteCommander I've lived in Versailles before...

in the king's palace?

When foreigners say "Paris" they mean: "Île de France"
@ByteCommander If I opened my bathroom window, sat on the window sill and hung out of the window grabbing one of the pipes...
.. I could just see the top of the roof of the palace! ;-) :-)
Île-de-France (; French: [il də fʁɑ̃s] ( listen), "Island of France"), also known as the région parisienne ("Parisian Region"), is one of the 18 regions of France and includes the city of Paris. It covers 12,012 square kilometres (4,638 square miles) and has its own regional council and president. It has a population of 12,005,077 as of January 2014, equivalent to 18.2% of the population of France.The region is made up of eight administrative departments: Paris, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Seine-et-Marne, Val-de-Marne, Val-d'Oise and Yvelines. @Videonauth I was referring to: Mittelhoghdeutsch
Implying you're a vampire and have been alive for a couple of centuries! ;-)

ah ok :)
@Fabby well, sometimes i feel like it lol
with my basement-tan :D

@Videonauth :D :D :D Nah! admit it: your pale complexion comes from you sleeping in a coffin!
;-) :-)

not yet comrade, not yet :P
Last CV for this dupe needed.

@Videonauth Closed!

thank you

Hello :)

@cl-netbox o/
Gute morgen!

@Fabby Good morning my friend ! :)
@Fabby Guten Morgen ! :)

If I land this job, I might be moving to Paris

I saw some discussions about the new NVIDIA 410 drivers on the site ... please be careful with them - currently those are (untested) beta drivers. @Fabby @Terrance @Videonauth

10:13 AM
@cl-netbox Yup, I know.
As long as they don't show up in the PPA, not installing them!!!

@cl-netbox well you know how fast I am when it comes to migrating to new drivers ;)

@Fabby I wish you good luck (as always) ! :)

@Videonauth :D :D :D
@cl-netbox Danke!

@Fabby I switched to using the original NVIDIA drivers ... the packaged drivers in most distros (including ubuntu) are having too many issues lately. :)
@Videonauth yes indeed ... hahaha

@Fabby may i ask what taxes your GPU so much? i thought mine was pretty much loaded with me watching videos beside and rendering a 3d scene

2 movies open at the same time...

lots of 3D-accelarated things activated on CCSM, ...
EG. "Where's my mouse" shows a circle of flames around my mouse pointer etc...

kk :)
well i only reach high gpu usage when gaming or running cuda tasks

10:50 AM
@cl-netbox maybe you know a solution? --> askubuntu.com/q/1076906

@Videonauth "Also this machine has an Nvidia GTX 950M which is set as the primary display with the proprietary drivers and the Intel integrated graphics card." This might be the problem, because NVIDIA renders and intel displays (output) : xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0 ... :)

well do not tell me tell him ;) if you know whats wrong +1 from me is guaranteed, as i had a similar thing on 16.04 but only after first install
there switching to tty and back fixed it

@Videonauth no, I don't ... because that is part of what I said before - the packaged drivers are more or less messy these days. And when I suggest to install the original NVIDIA drivers (which work perfectly and are set up as intended by NVIDIA) I'm getting the full AU hate and on top many downvotes. I've got enough of that. My latest answers, though being good and correct didn't get many upvotes, the last one not even one ...
@Videonauth The other day I tried to help a user (with a comment) setting up NVIDIA Optimus and what did I receive ? A very unfriendly comment ...

11:09 AM
mhmmm

30% we do here is for the black hole of eternity, 30% is only just for our own ego, 30% actually helps people, but the resting 10% saves the world.

@Takkat Hi ! :) You're right ... but what I dislike most is the negativity and the unfriendliness more and more members provide.

@cl-netbox I do too - but think of the 10% !!! It's worth it :)

@Takkat sure thing ... that's why I still try to help from time to time :)

well, people asking are in many cases under pressure by the situation they are in with their system

11:17 AM
cl: It says ~2.7m people reached, just imagine this crowd!!!

@Videonauth especially then they should be friendly - or not ? :)

HELP me at once or I tell your mom or I may even get back to Windows.

@cl-netbox yes but i can only reflect myself i try to be friendly in most of the time, but when im under stress i can act weird too

@Takkat hahaha ... thanks for your motivational words :)

@Takkat KTHXBYE ;)
however tho this guy i posted a link to the question asked nicely and reacted positive otherwise i would not have asked if you have a clue

11:22 AM
@Videonauth I'm not speaking of users with problems only - I mainly mean many experienced (long-time) members ...

yeah i have some i have my quarrels with too ;) thats normal
but this will not stop me from answering if i can

I can get grumpy too, I can tell you!
(but not here actually)

not naming them anyways i just ignore them as much as possible and don't let then undermine my self confidence
thats the important thing

@Videonauth I know ... the thing is he tries to use the NVIDIA card for display instead of the intel card ... but I can be wrong of course. People are trying the weirdest things when it comes to graphics ... :D

and this --> askubuntu.com/users/522934/videonauth?tab=badges should speak for itself

@Videonauth I do the same, but don't forget that I (need to) spend a lot of time helping members of the official redhat community. Also, there my assistance is much appreciated ... you should read the responses, you won't believe what you would see ... nearly all extremely kind and fiendly. :)

I've seen worse kind of people as here already :) spending 2 years as voluntary community helper on second life

@Videonauth that is true of course ! :)

Huh? We have en evil scientist here in this room? and then: "Aaah..."

@cl-netbox Normally I would tend to agree with you about it being BETA, but NVIDIA themselves no longer lists them as BETA: geforce.com/drivers/results/138279

1:47 PM
@cl-netbox Well, let me take that back, I understand not fully tested with Ubuntu yet. But from my observations here of my installation, they seem pretty rock solid, and my apps sure seem to like them. =)

Q: Windows 10 + Ubuntu 18.04 + LUKS dualboot problems

SteinerI am trying to achieve dualboot of Windows 10 (pre-installed) and Ubuntu 18.04 on a new laptop. This is not very difficult, however it appears to get much more complex if you also want LUKS full-disk encryption, which asks the passphrase during boot to decrypt and use hardware acceleration for bo...

guys is there a way to figure out why Ubuntu keeps just shutting down my laptop?
it looks like it thinks it's hitting critical temps
but idk for sure that's what's happening

if it is heat it will be logged in /var/log
check the last changed log files and have a look for CRITICAL notices

2:38 PM
just some things about throttling the CPU

@Terrance Hi Terrance ! :) Then they changed it in the last few hours. This morning I checked the status and they were still flagged beta ... but what about that -> devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/533434/linux/… ? urrent beta release: 410.57 (x86_64)

@TheWanderer Install psensor and keep an eye on the temp.

@cl-netbox Hey there! =) Ah, I see they have 410.57 in beta. The interesting thing is, when I use the repo from NVIDIA now instead of the graphics-drivers ppa, I always get a driver that is not shown as to be in the current beta release. Come to think of it, I have not installed my driver from the graphics-drivers ppa for a long time, except for when Ubuntu 18.04.1 finally went live for upgrade.
I am currently using 410.48

Q: Package system broken

VenooxI'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 and I have problems with nvidia drivers. Today I boot up my computer and I see that my resolution is weird. So I opened the terminal and tried to update drivers. sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-390 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading ...

what is the nvidia repo url? I have been using the graphics-drivers PPA.... should I try the one @Terrance is speaking of????

@JoshuaBesneatte The one I am talking about is here: askubuntu.com/questions/1077061/…

thanks!

@Terrance I found it ... only when you check for RTX there is no beta flag ... when you check for GTX there is the beta flag. :)

@cl-netbox Care to share?

2:56 PM
@Terrance 410.48 is in the cuda toolkit

what are the advantages of switching to cuda?

@JoshuaBesneatte switching ?

@JoshuaBesneatte It's addition to.

I am using nvida 390... 396 breaks my system...

2:58 PM
@cl-netbox Hmmm, interesting. I have actually had better success though using them from NVIDIA's repo, even if they claim beta.

@JoshuaBesneatte Try to install the original drivers.

@cl-netbox But then again, I have been running with CUDA installed for applications now that I am starting to use that will use it. Blender is one example. =)

Interesting that they list is as BETA one way and not the other for the 410.57 driver

forgive my ignorance... reading about CUDA now...

3:02 PM
@Terrance marketing ... :)

@cl-netbox I can see that. =)

@JoshuaBesneatte you don't need cuda ... first get the drivers working

my system works great actually... discussion here just piqued my curiosity ;)
I don't need CUDA, but I am glad I know what it is now :)

@JoshuaBesneatte okay :)

Nice, from that same repo, you can just install the NVIDIA 410 drivers without CUDA. Still works. =)

3:14 PM
@Terrance from which repo ?

@Terrance but that should give you 410.48 - right ?

@cl-netbox Yes, that is correct.
Eventually they do catch up in that repo

@Terrance no ... these drivers stay until a new cuda toolkit gets released ... they assume that you install the drivers using the .run file

@cl-netbox In all honesty, it doesn't matter to me at least since the drivers have held very stable to me and I have not had issues with them since I started using them from the developers site.
Also, a lot of people just want something that works and they don't want to mess around with it all the time, and that is a huge reason I stick with LTS releases.

3:23 PM
@Terrance Here is the proven to work (perfectly) method for the original drivers installation (just in case you wanna try it out) on notebooks with hybrid graphics (Optimus) on a fedora system ->

sudo dnf install kernel-devel dkms libglvnd-devel libva-utils libva-vdpau-driver vdpauinfo

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
@Terrance yes, that's the most important thing of course :)

@cl-netbox With my experience, I can't go with the word proven as that really doesn't exist. My co-worker has set me on my way with that one by finding flaws in things I do. So far though, for me and others that have tried it, this has worked. This really is a matter of opinion and using what actually works for you. No offense, but I an not in the mood to reinvent the wheel right now.

@Terrance no problem Terrance ... you don't have to. And what you say about "proven" : you're right ! :) Just wanted to show it to you because you use redhat systems too. :)

@cl-netbox Indeed I do that! =)
I am going to be late to work. Gotta run here! Chat later! =)

@Terrance Bye :) See you ...

Q: Is a "cup" on a coffee maker always 6 oz? Is this a standard in the US?

Doug T.Our coffee maker instructions often refer to a "cup" of coffee. These cups are whats marked on the side of the coffee maker showing how much water is in the reservoir. The instructions never define what a "cup" actually equates to. It appears to about 6 oz. An old coffee maker seems to also have ...

This.Is.Infuriating ---^
@ThomasWard I approve this message
@Seth Nah, Linus is just getting wiser and more mature, and the kernel only will get better from that

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I hope so.

Meanwhile, I'd like to use an immature moment: Why in the world does apple make mouses that do left click EVEN IF YOU PRESS ON . THE RIGHT BUTTON ? You have to hold Ctrl+mouse click to actually get right click functionality

Apple Knows Best™

10:13 PM
OK. Back to cup sizes . . . I'm tempted to go with 8 but then again Mr. Coffee uses 6 oz.

10:44 PM
"Back to cup sizes" Not quite what I expected ;)
Also according to google there's 3 different standards for cups ._.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy also apple only has one mouse button ;)

this cup, that cup, whatever! :P my coffee mug is anyways larger as 8 oz ;)
450 ml to be exact

@JourneymanGeek Yep, the other type of cup sizes are probably far more interesting of a topic. However, I'm building a coffee maker for my senior project, so I have to know the volume to actually define all the necessary requirements for project documentation

(US Legal, US and UK)

Maybe World Peace will happen when we all agree on the same measurement units

I thought a cup was always 250ml....
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cup_(unit) apparently its a metric cup
also says "A customary "cup" of coffee in the U.S. is usually defined as 4 fluid ounces,[citation needed] brewed using 5 fluid ounces of water." but citation needed

10:53 PM
First rule of system engineering: if it's not in writing - it doesn't exist. "Customary" isn't really written anywhere formal, so . . . it's not really a standard
Ship . . . I'm out of time. Alright, bye guys !
