Q: Grub Rescue Mode - /boot/grub directory does not exist

planet_hunterI have gone through a lot of questions and answers related to grub rescue but I am having a different problem which I am not able to understand. As per some of the answers, I tried following steps to resolve this problem - First of all I used ls command to get all the partitions which in my c...

Q: Ubuntu With Kali Tools Or Kali Itself?

Caeden Thomas SantI know that there is a huge aversion to kali Linux based questions because of how many people want to become “lit hackers” or script kiddies or whatever. I’m genuinely interested in learning the field, so, should just use Ubuntu and install the tools on there to learn pen testing and learn Linux ...

:|
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L As far as I understand from the next question, the user is asking if Kali Linux is superior to Ubuntu standalone installation and how this helps to learn more about computer security. A moderator has flagged the question as opinion based, but I think that the question is about the education system and how Artificial Intelligence can help to understand computer networks better. What do you think?

Hey, I was wondering if the default document viewer uses OCR to select text, because I was able to select text from a pdf which seemed more like scanned document rather than latex. Is OCR really used by the document viewer?
@ManuelRodriguez he wants to compare apples with pears so yes it is opinionated. Ubuntu is an operating system for daily usage. Adding the Kali tools can help identify problems on your system but you could also install the tool you want for that straight from the repositories (that is what katoolin does anyways). Kali itself is suppose to be a LIVE SESSION and for testing if a network can be penetrated. Totally different thing :)
@AlphaRomeo pdf also can contain "ocr data". That generally is used for copy/pasting. So that is not an actual conversion of the image to text.

Q: Swap on secured partition is not being mounting on boot

Hi, How can i install Win 7 in a partition where there was installed Win 10 on a dual boot installation with Ubuntu 18.04?
@rab That would me more of a superuser.com question. You're trying to replace W10 with W7, not a good fit for Ask Ubuntu.
@rab why? Kill the dual boot. install virtualbox. Install Windows in there. No more worries about windows deleting your ubuntu during install. Easy backups (just copy the container), sandboxed so a virus is easily removed by restoring a backup. Win-win-win-win scenario :=)
Rab is probably downgrading to W7 because W10 takes too much RAM, so VM will take too much too.
(But you're correct to Never Assume Always Ask...)
2Gb for Ubuntu and 2Gb for W7 in vbox works perfectly. And that is if there is only 4Gb memory. With 8 or more it becomes trivial :-)
10:31
16GB here, but still dual booting. (but then I don't use Windows except to change by keyboard backlight colours)

Win 7 is enough for me it is just in case some app or file I could not manage with Ubuntu, and Win 10 is slow and demanding to much care. Thanks a lot for your answers.
@rab They're not answers... They're just chats, so take any advice here with a Kg of salt.
@Fabby we do weights in "Alps" here. 1Kg is 0.0000000001 Alp
@rab that reads like a perfect Vbox setup.
here at work we do everything with containers. So easy to use once set up.
Last count we have 79 containers _O-
and 250 GCE's :=)

well, gonna disable the PPA then. Will have to find other repos for those applications I got from them some other time
Just a bunch of images and a link to the ubuntu repo
also I'm trying to set up bumblebee, any useful hints?
no :=) only witty ones
like ... don't get stung :D
Bumblebee won't work on 18.04 it seems
Last update is from 14.04 :X
11:01
The graphics driver Bumblebee is part of an operating system and it's setup has to be modeled in a formal ontology. That means, somewhere in the expert database a list of installed and not installed software is given together with the dependencies. Is anybody familiar with expert systems for computer configuration? If not, a small introduction into the basics is possible with the help of Google Scholar.

Q: Best Download manager for Ubuntu?

Asela broWhat is The Best Download manager for Ubuntu ?

wrong cllose vote. Should be duped
12:09
@Rinzwind Not sure it's worth it. The dupe target is also a bad question.
lol
why is there set and shopt when both do the same thing?
32
A: Set and Shopt - Why Two?

GillesAs far as I know, the set -o options are the ones that are inherited from other Bourne-style shells (mostly ksh), and the shopt options are the ones that are specific to bash. There's no logic that I know of.

> It was probably the idea at the start (that SHELLOPTS would be the standard ones, and BASHOPTS the bash specific ones), but that got lost along the way, and now it just ends up being annoying and a UI design fiasco.
impossible to fix without massively breaking workflows – it’s a programmer’s nightmare :)
does a programmer want to fix something like that? not sure :O
Ugh! That is even more confusing. My brain wants to associate shopt with $ SHELLOPTS rather than $ BASHOPTS. — Bruno Bronosky Mar 22 '16 at 16:17
lmao, my brain does the same
12:27
But it is SHELLOPTS
$ help shopt | head -n2
shopt: shopt [-pqsu] [-o] [optname ...]
    Set and unset shell options.
Granted, it's a bash thing, but bash is a shell so...
@terdon so this answer is wrong?
19
A: Set and Shopt - Why Two?

mug896The difference is in the changed environment variable used by bash. Setting with the set command results in $SHELLOPTS. Setting with the shopt command results in $BASHOPTS.

Oooooh!
You meant the env variable names! Duh!
No, it isn't wrong.

Wtf, performance of glxgears with bumblebee running on my nvidia card is significantly worse than directly on the intel integrated graphics. How can that be?
@ByteCommander nVidia
$ vblank_mode=0 glxgears -info | grep -v EXTENSIONS
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
GL_RENDERER   = Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 (Skylake GT2)
GL_VERSION    = 3.0 Mesa 18.0.5
GL_VENDOR = Intel Open Source Technology Center
VisualID 314, 0x13a
37178 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7435.448 FPS
37936 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7587.151 FPS

~$ vblank_mode=0 PRIMUS_SYNC=1 primusrun glxgears -info | grep -v EXTENSIONS
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
Basically intel gives 10x the framerate
However, nvidia only without bumblebee was still faster IIRC.
Strange is too that if running on intel, glxgears causes my laptop to make a weird very high frequency noise

Q: Mount an external write-protected disk with bad geometry on Ubuntu Server 16.04

@Rinzwind You can try symbolhound.com as a search engine for special characters. Spoiler: No results for [^$I$^]. Btw, if it were a regex and no interpolation is in action then it would mean: one character that is neither a $, nor an I, nor a ^.
@damadam Some programs show 400% when you have 4 CPUs (cores) fully busy. Dunno how top behaves, though, as I usually use htop.

Q: VMWare Clone Ubuntu 16.04 vs 18.04 Network problem

16:16
@ByteCommander yes : sudo apt purge bumblebee :D :D :D
well, it wasn't as bad as I thought
seems to work now, and despite simple benchmarks like glxgears being slower, complex stuff like furmark shows better performance in bumblebee than direct intel
of course when it comes to ridiculous frame rates like you can get them with glxgears, direct rendering is faster because of the overhead to copy the frames over from the internal to the graphics buffer
@Rinzwind What the wizard said!
@ByteCommander I switched to using the original NVIDIA drivers some time ago, the overall performance is much better since ... on my machine at least. :)

Q: Why does logrotate generate empty log files when using two wildcards in log path?

kevmorLogrotate will rotate the logs but when it renames the file to .1 (and then subsequently to .2.gz, .3.gz, etc) the files are empty. @ByteCommander Maybe you want to give those drivers a try : nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/137211/en-us Here is the documentation : us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/396.54/README/… :)

also I'm leaving this now as it is, not going to try directly installing a different driver from the site now
@ByteCommander sorry ... us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/396.54/README/… that is a mistake on the NVIDIA website ... it is always "x86_64" ! :)
it seems to work well enough for now

am having issue starting one of my service
it keeps stay activating for long
any suggestions??
@ByteCommander CloneZilla backup first and only then try CL-netbox's suggestions.

@cl-netbox No!

Wow, these “new contributor” warnings are pervasive – just two questions and they already bug me. So not only does the new design massively waste space by adding empty areas everywhere, now it begins to fill the remaining with redundant, superfluous information.
