@DougSmythies I had posted an answer on how to fix the broken false/positive dependency problem in the postinst.rm routine or something like that. Can't remember it exactly. Basically just put an exit 0 after the #!/bash/sh initial line. I reported the bug but it took them 2 months to fix it.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Yes, I recall that annoying issue. This is another one and because I am still on 16.04. And I am still there because I don't like netplan.

@DougSmythies I've heard lots of problems with netplan but I've never used it. I clone my 16.04 to test partition and then run the 18.04 upgrade on it just to answer questions. Never had a problem with Internet though. I've run the 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS upgrade about 5 times since April. Still use 16.04 99% of the time though.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Oh, I am running two computers with 18.04 desktop. they seem fine. I meant my main test server (with all the kernels) and my main gateway/router/everything server, which require some things that I don't know how to do in netplan.

@DougSmythies I see. Unfortunately I haven't had time to delve into Server setup, Samba, SQL, LAMP, Java and all that other good stuff yet. I should just get off my butt and setup a server on one of those two laptops on the kitchen table. Lord know I don't use it for eating :p
Over the next couple of weeks though if you can come up with a wish list for rm-kernels or rm-kernels-server (I might just make one whiptail version though as `dialog is no longer included in desktop by default) just post it under the answer as a comment.
I'll probably convert buggy zenity to yad and have rm-kernels-cli and rm-kernels-gui. Not sure about a lot of things yet.

12:18 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix: O.K., will do. Really just one thing, in addition to what you already mentioned and that is: Don't abort upon when a partially installed kernel is found. That is why I am using the script, to remove it. However, currently, I have to go back to doing it manually.

@DougSmythies I'm not sure how I'm aborting??? It's been a long time since I've sculpted the code. Can you tell me how to partially install a kernel so I can test the abortion?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix: You should be create the scenario on a 16.04 computer by trying to install any recent mainline PPA kernel. Say kernel 4.18-rc8, for example. ( kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.18-rc8 ) you should get a stupid, and not needed, dependency issue resulting in the problem for a subsequent run of the kernel removal script.

@DougSmythies Oh yes I know what you mean. I've had lots of failed kernel installs due to the buggy Ubuntu setup over the last few months. I have to manually remove stuff and run apt install -f then tweak stuff. Can't remember all the steps off the top of my head.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix: I am bookmarking this chat page, since I never remember how to get here. Now all I have to do is remember that I bookmarked it.

@Doug I made 3 pictures for getting into this chat room, let me try to post them here.
1. Top right of your screen click on far right stack exchange icon
2. Drop down menu appears click the "chat" hyper-link at top, second from right.
3. All the 20 or 30 chat rooms appear pick the one "Ask Ubuntu General Chat".
In hind sight maybe book marking is easier :p
@DougSmythies Didn't ping you properly. Read up ^^^^. How's weather in BC? It was 34 degrees here today plus smoke from BC forest fires blanketed all of Edmonton.

12:41 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Re "how to", thanks. Re: heat: Yes, brutal, I think 33 here, plus some barge fire nearby so haze and smell (like burning rubber) all day.

@DougSmythies I hate that burning rubber smell. Worse than forest fire smoke. Oh well at least good ole rain forecast for tomorrow temps will drop from 34 down to 22.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Yes, looking forward to the next two days of cooler temps.

My system is Ubunutu 18.04 with Nvidia 1030 GT. I installed a nvidia graphics driver version 390 or 394. But it is not working for me. The system hang in boot.

When booting press e to open editor. Then add to line with LINUX_DEFAULT after quiet splash the string nvidia-modeset=0. Or at least I think that is right.
Sorry not "when booting" in the BIOS sense, I meant when the grub menu is up and before the countdown expires.

Then should I remove the nomodeset option? now i am using the CMDLINE_LINNUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset".
Yes you're right. I can see the grub menu.

12:47 AM
Using nomodeset is the same thing except it applies to the i915 Intel built in GPU as well.

OK.

I just activated my old nVidia a few days ago. It's a pain for sure. Still working out the minutia of wavy lines when scrolling.

That sounds good!

All I can say is be prepared to spend lots of time researching. I've spent probably a man-week over the last four years.

Then I am trying to install the latest(394) graphics driver and editing the grub menu option.

12:50 AM
I'm using 384.130 because that was recommended by Ubuntu Kernel team.

OK. Then I will install the driver through this commend "apt get install nvidia-384".

However I'm on GTX 970M which is different platform. You're using the new Pascal chipset so might have to use higher version.
NOOOOO

No ?

Go to Settings

Ah

12:51 AM
Then pick Software & Updates

Yes i know

Then pick Additional Drivers

additional

right :)

There is a 390 driver .
Ok

12:52 AM
There was no 390 driver for my machine.
I think Ubuntu tries to pick the appropriate one for individual machines.

Um
OK I will try 390 384 394
in sequence

It's hard to say.
We can only guess ;(

Yeah! But for me the guess is very helpful.
Thanks
I am trying this now.

If you can use your Intel i7-7700 or i7-6700 integrated HD 620 or HD 530 graphics that would be my first recommendation for staying sane.

haha
My system is Phenom X6!

12:55 AM
Never heard of it but the name is catchy!

and motherboard intergrated AMD HD 4200.

Right up there with Rhyzen
Well your AMD probably has an APU then. That could work just as well as Intel iGPU.

haha The phenom X6(6 core) cpu doesn't have internal graphics. But the motherboard integrated graphics, AMD HD 4200 is working on ubuntu 18.04.
But now.
The reason to install nvidia graphics driver is it supports high resolution (maybe 4k).
That why I am trying to install nvidia 1030 GT graphics driver.
I'd like to use the high resolution display like MAC(OSX).

Similar to me. My reason was HDMI laptop port was hardwired to nVidia card so for triple monitor setup I had to switch Thunderbolt DVI from main screen to third screen and activate nVidia to second screen. Long story with new Alienware laptops.

(retina display)
Wow
Triple!

1:00 AM
Yeah two desktops were two crowded :)

Oh You have so nice laptop

Yeah I love it.
In the case of a fire, it's the first thing I'm grabbing!

hahaha oh my god.

4dr14n31t0r Th3 G4m3rI just realized that for some reason when I press Alt+F3 on a gnome terminal I write an 'R'.Does this mean something? Or is it a bug? @WinEunuuchs2Unix But what if there's a fire and it's near your computer... that sounds like a case of: IN CASE OF FIRE: Run straight towards fire.

3:02 AM
haha better yet what if it was the laptop that started on fire in the first place :D

3:19 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix then that becomes a case of In case of fire: Run directly into flames
in my case, the response is "In case of fire, grab emergency go bag and get out of the building"

NeophyteI am running into this problem, where I am unsuccessful in finding a solution for. Q: Directly selecting text on hyperlinks? (In Windows with Alternate+Drag cursor, no drag/drop)

neverMind9In Windows, if I hold Alt and select text by clicking and dragging, it works. In Linux, it moves the window of the browser like any other window. Did you know you can select a hyperlink's text when pressing ALT while selecting the text with your mouse? I didn't.

Hi @Rinzwind. I think I'm a bit haywired. Whenever I see your avatar, I don't see a closeup of some Asian comic character's eye but instead a portait of a bearded, grimly looking, long-haired man wearing a white tank top.
I enjoy that. In German that's called a "Kippbild" (a picture that flips as you look at it, like the famous vase vs. two faces picture)
Never mind.

6:05 PM
@PerlDuck :=)
If you ever enjoyed cartoons/anime that is a must see :D
Oh and Stranger Things is based on this anime.
(character Eleven)

Now that I know the origin, I don't any longer see the bearded man. :-)
