A: Why does loading my own ~/.Xmodmap freeze my desktop on 18.04?

Amith KKWhen xmodmap runs, it calls the XChangeKeyboardMapping function once for every modified key, generating MappingNotify events each time and slowing down the system. An alternative would be to use xkb instead which does not have this problem. Just modify the file in /usr/share/X11/symbols/pc which...

Anyone have any idea why this didn't work?
Because I'm pretty sure it worked some time back

Q: 6PE (RFC 4798) support on ubuntu

Seemingly I opened the nicer version of Pandora's box. ;-)
if questions continue to get asked at that speed, we’ll reach 300.000 in approx. 27 hours
I'd me more impressed if they get answered at a fast rate
On a side note, my 1827 answers account for about 0.61 percent of all questions.
( well, once they reach 300000 , that is )
18:35
300,000 is a nice number. Speed of light. Distance to the moon. YMMV. -- Well, acutally YMWV.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Wow! 1827 answers. That is plenty.
@PerlDuck as I’m based in Germany too and this is a tiny country my mileage to the moon probably varies very little ;D
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy wow, I only have 428 – way to go!
@dessert I was kidding. The 300,000 figure is km/s and km, so your mileage may not vary but it will.
:D happy german humor day y‘all!
hate to break it to you, but the speed of light is actually 299,792 km/s
but that’s a good thing, we might see this number yet today!
quick, think of a bunch of dumb questions!
18:48
Like "This sudo chmod -R 777 / screwed up my system"?
I think most of those questions have already been asked. The questions themselves aren't really dumb, it's just dumb that these people picked up an advice from someone totally clueless. Just like "If it doesn't work, punch it!"
Kaplan's Law of the instrument‌: “Give a small boy a hammer, and he will find that everything he encounters needs pounding.”
chmod and chown are such hammers.
19:14
@dessert @PerlDuck Yeah, I've been picking out whatever questions I can to answer. A lot of them have a small vote count, though, because most of them either are already answered by someone else or go unnoticed much. Nailing a question fast also sometimes prevents others from viewing, like well Serg already got it so moving on, nothing bto see here
19:27
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy That's different from me. I just answer questions I find interesting in some way or when the other answers are completely wrong (in my opinion). Sometimes I research how a question can be answered or what the OP actually meant. Like How to suppress warnings in gromacs?. I have no idea what gromacs is nor how to operate it, but I can operate Google and read manuals.
But true: when I see an answer by you or some of the other usual suspects, I usually don't care about writing one on my own because they are correct and helpful most of the time.
@PerlDuck I only pick out stuff where I have useful input, or I feel like nobody else will touch it (I also sometimes touch the ones where someone is just complaining, because mods are generally very very civil and by virtue of the fact that I'm not a mod, I can be civil, but a little less so and not have anyone look at me funny or complain).
19:46
@RobotHumans That sounds reasonable. :-) I must confess that sometimes I have problems being civil and polite and then better keep my mouth fingers shut. Some questions really annoy me.

Q: What is the correct tag for questions regarding Ubuntu release policy?

Antti RailaI would like to ask a question about Ubuntu development policy, e.g. "Isn't Ubuntu supposed to release bug fixes for the duration of the release support?". What is the correct tag for such questions? Is this a question for Meta?

Heheh.
@PerlDuck Well, I find most of the questions interesting, especially scripting. A lot of questions that I wrote in 2016 touch scripting for GUI stuff, and that's where many of my indicators came from. Some stuff I just don't have time to answer and put a sife for too long. If I were more active I'd have like 2k answers by now
20:12
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy For me it continually changes over time. For instance, currently I'm totally interested in systemd, sudo, and rsyslog and whenever I see a question related to those, I'm keen to answer them because I often learn something myself during that process.
Yeah, same here. It's always a learning opportunity
@PerlDuck Yep. I applied for a webdev job, because I was in testing for a couple years and saw a lot of gotchas. Have python experience. And want to work in a shop that does auto-deploys with docker or kubernetes. I don't have parts of the experience, but you'll never get it if you don't apply for what you think is a perfect implementation. Same with questions.
So true, @RobotHumans, so true!
Hi @Byte!
My indoor thermometer just dropped from 31.6 to 31.5 centigrades. YEAH!
(Thats approximately 200 °F, I think)
How old are you using the word centrigrade instead of celsius...
LOL. I'm not a native speaker but I remember liking that word. Don't you use it nowadays?
20:23
That word is more used in like technical reports or academic circles. But in general American English speakers use Celsius
I don't, but I'm no spring chicken either. Grew up in the US though. So, centigrade was in my middleschool science textbooks, by commonly speaking everyone used Celsius to denote degrees in C
I did know a guy in the US that had his oven set to C not F, because it was easier to remember 100 instead of 212, and if it boils long enough, it's safe to eat - or that was his thinking.
Ahh. Thank you for letting me learn this. Danm. I loved the word so much. -- Wait: what about the UK? Can I say it there? Their language is sometimes a bit old fashioned (which I like).
It's not that you can't say it. It just threw me for a sec... like struck me as odd.
Well, UK use metric system so I'd expect "Celsius" would be the word to use there
@Zanna Is “centigrade(s)” accepted in colloquial language in the UK?
20:30
I mean, both mean the same thing, it's just that most people use Celsius, because that's . . . what most people use in the world . . .
Same thing as calling an older lady fille as opposed to femme. Was trying to be nice, and my french teacher in HS said "If you ever go to france, don't do that. They'll think you're getting fresh with them"
LOL, @dessert. Good idea. Funnily, in Germany we (colloquially) simply drop the unit and just say "Grad" as in "Es sind 35 Grad" (It's 35 degree).
The English Living Dictionaries doesn’t mention the word being outdated or unusual:
I have a printed version of the Oxford Dictionary in my shelf. I think that qualifies for using "centigrades".
20:33
@PerlDuck that’s essentially the same as dropping “degrees” in “It’s 35 Celsius.”
@RobotHumans interesting!
oh wait, do you say “It’s 35 Celsius.”?
@dessert Even in your link they say "Usage: In giving temperatures, use Celsius rather than centigrade in all contexts"
I stand corrected. However. I'll be in London in a few days and when if I meet the Queen, I'll tell her about the centigrades, not the celsiuses. ;-)
@PerlDuck fair enough, but it gives a fair amount of examples for it.
> ‘Germany is also approaching its record of 40 degrees centigrade hit back in 1983.’
very matching :)

Q: What does RTF mean?

kharandziukThere is a sign in Tempelhof airport in Berlin. What does the abbreviation RTF mean? I tried to google but found nothing.

20:53
@dessert Hey, how comes you sneak around at the aviation site? I do so as well.
@PerlDuck HNQ
Ok. (Confessing I needed to (again!) lookup what HNQ is.)
He was going to climb in through the landing gear like the monk in fifth element.
Sometimes I browse that site and have already posted something there a few times.
"Present the aviation is in my family" Yoda would have said.
poop. two rejection letters in one day. at least they said no though. it's better than dangling.
21:04
My Grandma, my Mom and my Godfather all were involved in ATC and I live nearby both a small and a big airport.
@PerlDuck Hot Nacho Quessadilla
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Getting hungry.
But wait: the Q thing is that construction kit, right?
RTFM - Respectfully Traverse the Fine Manual

@PerlDuck What kit ?
I once was in a Mexican restaurant and ordered something. Cannot remember its name. They brought some box with kinda pancakes and some plates with vegetables and minced meat.
That's Fajitas, I think
21:07
I had to build the "thing" on my own.
yes probably fajitas, but you sometimes get softshell tacos that way too.
Speaking of ducks, the real Peking duck is also served with sause and sort of pancakes.
Yes, might be. I always mix them up. And honestly, they all taste the same. But all of them are delicious. The only difference I notice is whether they are crispy or not. I prefer the crispy ones.
this sort of pancake thing is killing me. pita is used to eat hummus. it's soft fluffy and round. it's not a pancake although, it is a pancake sort of thing.
"pancake" isn't the right term. What I mean is something that looks like the French Crêpes.
But in the Mexican way. Not sweet, approx. 15 cm diameter, 2 millimeters thick
21:14
tortillas. there's more to it though. they can be flour or corn, and even corn can be white or yellow.
@PerlDuck oh, hi there o/
Hi. We were just talking about Mexican food. You didn't miss something.
@RobotHumans Generic term like "Potatroes" white, orange, purple, ... all "potatoes" >:-)
@PerlDuck "Tortillas" is the same
@ByteCommander o/
Hey, another old fart ;)
@Fabby Fair enough. I wouldn't want to make something that calls for corn tortillas with flour or vice versa though.
21:26
@ByteCommander Who do you refer to?
@PerlDuck me
@RobotHumans just like you wouldn't use normal potatoes for a pumpkin-sweet potato-salmon pie...

Q: how to scroll in a Ubuntu terminal using arrow keys

Russ P.This drives me nuts. I get some standard output in a terminal, and I try to use the arrow keys to scroll up, but instead it gives me previous commands. Page up and page down do nothing. And using the scroll bar is extremely difficult because it moves about a page per micro-inch. Please tell me th...

In our canteen they currently serve almost everything with sweet potatoes as a side. Fried, baked, cooked. I don't like that.
@PerlDuck Yeah... Someone found a "new way of doing old things"
Fries should be the old-fashioned style: potatoes cut into fish forms and fried in animal fat...
:D :D :D
That's the secret of the inventors of fries, I think.
21:34
I sort of like homefries. Old baked potato scraped out, seasoned, and fried on a grill in oil or fat.
@PerlDuck Yup...
@RobotHumans That's a Russian Recipe: Kroshka Kartoshka.
Best fries I ever ate was in Bruges, Belgium.
@PerlDuck Best fries you'll ever eat are mine:
I still use oxen fat. (and hand cut them on occasion)
@Fabby not stuffed potatos. homefries is a breakfast thing here.
@Rinzwind Link???
21:38
When I'm returning from the UK next time (by train), I'll have a stop in Brussels...
@RobotHumans recipe?
more similar to the UK/Ireland potatoes and cabbage patties. just no cabbage. onions and seasonings.
it's a leftovers/trash food
@PerlDuck Ask any local for the nearest "Delhaize" and buy it there.
o/
21:41
@Fabby I'll keep that in mind. Thank you.
YW
I think I need to prepare some food now. All this talking about food made me hungry.
Still haven't tried out that harira recipe, although simple chili is probably more likely, and doing bowls of chili, chili cheese enchiladas, and chili cheese fries.
So . . . currently my attention is kinda low . . . could someone see if my comment actually suitable as an answer there ? codereview.stackexchange.com/q/200892/127240
I need a nap -___-
why would you put a C++ answer on a python question?

Em . . . because that's python and not C++ actually :)
brain fart. i saw ** and thought pointer.
Yeah, I guessed that was the case
