Q: Why is Github more popular than Gitorious?

sjbachGitorious has been around longer and the two sites seem to cover the same ground, yet a quick Google Fight shows Github almost two orders of magnitude higher. Is there a larger distinction that I'm not aware of?

wish that would go away, its rather non-constructive all over.
i think this is where the FUD ratio gets hazy in the SO world that we dont see on AU because the focus is so much narrower.

Hello Chaps, I am doing an embarrassing presentation of fossil-scm on ubuntu 12.04 for some colleagues, and it worked perfectly on ubuntu 10.04, but now i get the message bash: /home/bjorn/bin/fossil: Permission denied
Can you give a hint on what I have missed out on since 10.04 ?
Maybe a stackexchange link to a fix?
Hey all
BHM
BHM
13:59
anybody?
permission denied means you don't have enough permissions to fun a certain process. you running it as root?
or with 'sudo'?
BHM
BHM
That was funny. I had to restart bash to run a program i had just installed, through sudo apt-get install fossil.
The most wierd was probably the error message. "Permission denied", when the truth was "no such program"

nice
Google translate is a beautiful thing ;)-

It's like bash.org except for our local hackerspace ;)
very cool, how long did it take you to make it?
Not that long.
Django makes it quite easy :-)
Especially since it automatically generates an admin interface :D
Hmm, Google Translate does not translate that quote too well :D

Q: Web Development in Ubuntu 12.04, I don't want to go back to Windows

user772401I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 bkz I could never get 11.xx to work on my laptop in dual boot. Since I'm trying to get away from Windows 7 I want to install a Dreamweaver like tool for web dev (i'm web dev n00b). I did my research and the best ones to me are BlueGriffon & KompOzer in terms...

seems like a forum post candidate and not a true question since it will be loaded with opinion

Q: authentication failed authenticating the upgrade failed.there may be a problem with the network or with a server

Anam[enter link description here][1] [1]: http://www.ubuntu.com/ this link has been shown in upgrading the Ubuntu version 10.10 to 11.04

I think you asked the first important question @Mahesh which is, describe the full problem with as much detail as you can :P
and i'm just... what to say.... at the detail he has given.....
14:46
If thats the error, it would be good to make sure the machine can connect to the 11.04 repo its trying to use
Lets not get that closed, but we need alot of work to understand what this one is trying to ask. probably some errors on upgrade, but how are we to deal with it?
@ruffEdgz thats a good point. can you comment on that question?
sure
with details, easy for him/her to follow. looks like (s)he's very new.
thanks. :)
updated... had to add some advanced stuff if they can follow but will help if needed with nmap or anything else terminal based

I don't see it happening @Mahesh

theoretically, it should be. except it wasn't.
Are answers to CW questions not auto-marked CW?
yeah it should happen if it follows the rule, but I don't see it happening here.
jrg

if it was marked CW as a mod, yes
but marked CW by edits, no
oh, that explains it.

anyone got a good gimp 2.8 ppa? I can't find the question about it...
3
A: How do I get GIMP 2.8?

nextrufusIn Ubuntu 12.04: You can do this through the Terminal: 1.Delete Gimp sudo apt-get autoremove gimp gimp-plugin-registry 2.Add the following PPA sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp sudo apt-get update 3.Install Gimp sudo apt-get install gimp

5
A: Will Gimp 2.8 ship with Ubuntu 12.04?

OrangeTuxThe GIMP won't be installed default on 12.04 because Canonical wants the ubuntu image to fit on a cd. And the software repositories will contain GIMP 2.6 because GIMP 2.8 isn't stable yet. You can install GIMP 2.8 via this way: # sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp # sudo apt-ge...

jrg
jrg
meh, just did an edit. i think that makes me happy.
nice!
@jokerdino no luck with wget, curl, kget, bzr, svn, git, and so on....nothing except plain http:// and https://, and that too never from a terminal.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
hmm dropbox?
get any of those working, and i'll put up a cutout of yours here.
nope. not even dropbox.
15:15
someone shall bzr it and tar it and email you.
my win buddies are happy with dropbox, though.
@jokerdino Thanks, though not eligible for cut-out. btw i can download them from launchpad.
pffft
them==debs that i otherwise get from ppas
ok, now why does dropbox work on windows and not linux? Whatever witchcraft the proxy server uses, does that make a difference?

unfortunate
that you didn't know when to use your and you're.
@Mahesh hahahaha that would be very unfortunate indeed
since it seems to be clear skies where I live :P
did you install the Dropbox application from their website?
nautilus-dropbox or what?
@jokerdino meh.
hmm... wait. let me check.
its nautilus-dropbox
so i'm now going to purge that and install dropbox from their website
sounds good
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh fiddle with those
i've never had to joy and luxury of playing with proxies seriously, but i think that might help.
15:28
that in dropbox installed from website?? or nautilus-dropbox?

it's in dropbox period
@jrg trust me, its no joy. its hell.

@jrg how do i get to that? starting dropbox itself fails coz it cant connect

jrg
@jokerdino Sweet. :)
Just installed the DEB file from Dropbox's website, installed it and now I can see my folders in Nautilus ;)
the daemon is to be installed, and for that, i need to connect, which doesn't happen.
where do i get to the dropbox prefs window????

@Mahesh want 32 or 64 bit? I can email you a copy of it if you want...
ok sent a pair of email @jrg. Take your time and do me a favour. :)
You probably have about 6 hours before my lesson starts tomorrow. XD
ok that is not really a deadline for you. So, don't worry about it.
@jrg 64 bit. i've downloaded the deb from site and installed it with dpkg -i. and now it wants a proprietary daemon.
that's how you pull someone into something that they have no idea about. ^_^
jrg
jrg
Ok, @Mahesh i'll try and get that to you.
:) thanks.

Q: Customize Launcher Animations?

Kyle BrandtWhen I get Skype messages I tend not to notice the launcher animation. The highlighted Icon is then not enough to catch my attention. Although I agree with the default here, is there a way I can make the animation continuous until I click it?

16:14
Thats an interesting question there @KyleBrandt and I have also been interested in making notifications become more animated or noticeable for IMs, email messages, etc...
PARTY TIME!!!!! wget works.. :D
nice, did you wget something from dropbox @Mahesh?
Easier not to notice with the vertical launcher I think
On widescreen
@ruffEdgz nope. au transcript.
all this time i was trying without http:// in http_proxy. gave it a try, and it worked like magic.
16:17
now i'm gonna hunt down each and everyone of those that weren't working.

Q: Ubuntu 12.04 bad screen

John JohnWhen i install ubuntu and turn on my comp. screen is purple and changing colours only on the top screen 1cm i can see ?! Why this happens? Sorry for my bad English

When reading it, I really don't know what the question is. I like the detail but it sounds like he wants general help on Ubuntu as a whole. Does he want to know more about why the system is going slow or general functionality?? Not sure.
i think he doesn't realise he's logged in.
that could be it as well

then he must see launcher and panel, right? but it looks like they're not visible.
yea, just not used to the fact that everything is found at the top panel
ok, i'll leave it for the experts to handle. :)
Hi all
hi all

Hi @htorque :)
<-- was forced into upgrading to 12.04
@Takkat ?? forced?

Q: Is it safe to delete every hidden folder in the home directory?

OVERLORDMy $HOME (otherwise known as '~') directory has lots of hidden configuration folders. Is it safe to delete all of them? To be specific Will the OS break if I do so? Will my ethernet/printer/sound/graphics drivers stop working? I don't care about superficial things like: Gnome themes, Key shor...

<-- is forced to use windows 7 for work
I issued an evil command when being sudo...
@htorque pity u.. :|
oh oh
18:23
All bye bye. Fresh as fresh can be now.
@Mahesh no worries, they maybe allow dual-boot systems.
Took me 2 hours to reinstall everything.
lol.. :P
what command? the one with two characters followed by '-rf ~'?
But 10 hours to backup what was remained from my /home first.
@htorque it was find -delete :) that was worse I guess.
18:24
duuuude
sh*t happens - even to the best of us
@Takkat O.o.... and what did u find -delete?
I triple checked but then... should have quadruple checked.
3
at least that wouldn't kill my data, which is just linked in my home dir
@htorque That SUCKS!
I wanted to delete my old kernels... but this command decided to delete /
18:25
at least it runs on thinkpads :P
tomorrow i will do the only thing that makes me like windows 7 → set the theme to "windows classic" :D
lol, @Takkat you coul'd've trusted apt-get for that.
I icould if they were installed but they were not.
Only grub an evil find found them
ok, and what witchcraft did u useto achieve that?????
@Takkat oh, you did that in /?
having a kernel without installing
18:27
@htorque i know -I'll never do such a thing again,
one way to clean up your hard drive :P
@Mahesh it were remainders from 10.04. I made an "upgrade" to 11.04 some time ago.
well, doing it in ~ can be bad, but would at least leave the system untouched.
That left the kernels uninstalled and undeleted.
at least you now run on 12.04
18:29
doing it in ~ would have left the kernels undeleted
Yeah 12.04 clean install.
@Takkat ok, so you could've manually rm'ed them.
@Mahesh of course but I did not quite knwo where they all were.
find found them all.
i decided to just leave the cruft alone. it's consuming space, but that's it.
@htorque reinstalling my /home would have taken more than 2 hours...
NEVER use rm with -f; or find with -delete, unless the other alternative is to run windows.
5
18:31
my ~ is basically just a few MB :P
it was on my new SSD.
I didn't bother when they were on the platter.
oh, so at least the destruction was fast!?
Fast as lightning.
It only complained about not being able to delete things...
That made me worry.
I was even unable to shutdown after that.
jrg
jrg
impressive @Takkat - i've never done that to my system before.
I will never do it again.
I made a dry run to see all is good. But find was not telling the truth.
jrg
jrg
18:33
i'm really tempted to run everything inside a LXC container now.
(well I never used it before so it was a nice experience)
@Takkat u can rm -rf / and still work for a while.
Yeah I could even asked here on chat - but it was so obvious wht I did and what to do next.
Worst was: may wife came home 1h later to do some work on that machine.... oh noes.
jrg
jrg
you have backups, right?
Home was untouched, backups 4 weeks old.
18:36
"hi, can i..." - "no."
I make backups since my first experience with chown -R
i'll never try to fix a chown -R again :D
"no not now later maybe"
"this service is temporarily not available. come back tomorrow."
no chown -R no find -delete no fun
18:37
beeeeep
chown -R is not that bad, actually.
way better than find -delete and rm -rf
Another thing. Backup whatever you symlink on your SSD. These files are needed to restore everything!
It's no fun to boot into Ubuntu without .config in your /home.
i once typed unset in bash, and my friend reinstalled everything..
jrg
jrg
Yeah, not having .config is really not fun to deal with.
18:39
is it so???
the defaults are fine, right?
No - all apps want to write stuff there. If they only find a symlink to nowhere they don't like you.
They hate you to be precise
ok, so a symlink to nothing is bad, but what if there's nothing, not even the symlink
"to be precise" - that has a whole new meaning when you kill your pre-precise install :P
That was my fist encounter with Precise. ;)
oops
18:44
hey that thing on the right deserves more stars... :|
Precise hated me the first minute I was there. But it did not stop me to love it.
jrg
jrg
oh, see i don't delete kernels. I just let them sit there and rot, makes for a fun ride when I try and boot an oneiric kernel on a precise box. ;P
@Takkat upgrade to quantal ;)
2
You did already?
jrg
jrg
Or (as I did two months ago) a lucid on a precise box.
18:45
@Takkat sure thing :P
jrg
jrg
and please, stop excessively starring things. :)
I knew that.
jrg
jrg
:(
lol
ok, i stop it.
wait, do i see a mod abusing his powers? :|
jrg
jrg
you're not in trouble, was just saying that we should be careful with what we star. :)
18:48
ok remote comments
COUNT ME IN
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro :)
ditto!
hey, some of them u unstarred could be starred.. :(
now i just need more time to actually comment on posts :(
@jrg btw, i tried ur remote source, then reset.
18:49
ok so how do I branch and add them and submit them back?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh did the remote source work?
@htorque it's easy, just look in , it's a mess
yes, they worked, but i liked defaults better.
ditto freeze, crash, bug, etc.
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro so first, vet them on our master comment meta question.
18:49
oh I was just going to add those
jrg
jrg
oh, didn't we get them all?
oh
these have been updated!
no, we missed many, but adding all would be a problem.
can we scroll in pro-forma comments chooser?
yeah, like we don't need the low AR one
that doesn't happen enoughv
vs. all the other ones
yup.
18:51
Also it appears that the script autoadds "Welcome to AU!" so adding it in the comment makes it double up
jrg
jrg
more or less, go here, click the "fork" button on the top right hand corner, edit the file and then submit a pull request.
which I just found out the other day
We have them all now it seems
jrg
jrg
(you can do it via github, which is nice)
the other day when I tried it on UDS a bunch were missing
I am good to go!
ok, if we have perhaps, scrolling or multi-level list kind of things, this would be awesome. I see that the remote source is updated.
jrg
jrg
18:55
@Mahesh so here's what I do:
ok, u have my attention
well done jrg, it's nice to have them all in one place
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro thank you for the idea.
@Mahesh so just click the "show/hide desc" link and it'll collapse like that.
also
at some point Review started including answers as well
yes, i tried that. but twice, it did not display Nothing but a link as an option. i was quick enough to reset and insert that, but lazy enough to switch back to remote source.
