hi
Session is going
@MarcoCeppi hi! :)
jrg
jrg
01:03
So, since I'm not at UDS partying and stuff, anyone want to join me in exterminating the tonight?
01:24
@jrg Sure. I'll start voting/flagging/edittng on Page 3 of the Active tab?
jrg
jrg
Yeah, sure. go ahead.
jrg
jrg
mainly, if it's related to bug reporting, it can probably stay in that tag.
i'll clean the flags out in like, an hour or so, i'm going to ignore them until we collide on questions.
@jrg partying? half the people are down with the dreaded ubuflu, it seems :)
jrg
jrg
Ouch.
well, since I can't be productive at UDS, and since I refuse to go to UDS just to get sick, I'll just stay here and clean up all the mess marco and jorge didn't clean. ;)
01:38
Facepalm.
jrg
jrg
Everything is Objective. Except when it's Subjective, or Python.
@jrg: Just the guy I was looking for.
jrg
jrg
Oh dear
You pinged me last night about the pro-forma script?
jrg
jrg
what'd I do this time? :)
oh yes.
01:42
You mentioned something about Launchpad.
jrg
jrg
yeah
so store them in a LP repo or something similar
Do we have a canonical question for kernel upgrade failure?
@jrg But how can you hotlink it then?
...or will my server simply pull from there?
(I can't run Bazaar on my server...)
(...but I can run Git. I think.)
jrg
jrg
let me pull up a example
@JacobJohanEdwards i'm trying to find one
raw.github.com/gist/1559982/gistfile1.txt - so right now, my copy of the comments is here
for lp, what you could do is hotlink it link this - bazaar.launchpad.net/~dholbach/ubuntu-codeofconduct/v2-draft/…
@GeorgeEdison do you still need space?
jrg
jrg
?
@jrg That gets sent with the Content-disposition HTTP header set to attachment.
apport, redirecting bugs to Au. scowl
@lazyPower Sorry... I've been very busy lately.
I meant to get back to you on that.
I know the feeling @GeorgeEdison. I just happened to remember you asked a week or so ago.
I didn't want to leave you hanging
jrg
jrg
01:49
@GeorgeEdison Oh, lp doesn't work properly. :(
@JacobJohanEdwards well, lets be honest
it's been released
jrg
jrg
we're not supposed to have bugs in a release
All we really need is somewhere we can use Git and hotlink it.
That'll be the day. :)

Q: Why is Ask Ubuntu being linked to from Apport?

coversnailWhen I was using Apport I got the following messages: If you select I don't know what to do or Please point me to a good place to get support you get another pop-up window directing you to Ask Ubuntu: and upon clicking close you get a message saying that "this issue cant be reported, please...

01:50
Maybe other SE sites are having this problem too...
Wonders if this might be something SE would like to be involved in...
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison tell you what - github repo, and then just hotlink them there and stuff?
Hotlink them in GitHub?
...or on my server?
jrg
jrg
on github.
If that works, sure.
That way people can open merge requests to submit new ideas.
jrg
jrg
no offense, but i'd rather try to avoid personal resources if at all possible - its just that people have a tendency to get angry and leave, but its hard to make a company get really annoyed enough to do that. :P
01:52
I'm not going anywhere :P
...but I see your point.
jrg
jrg
it's not you, it's just people in general unfortunately. :(
ugh, @JacobJohanEdwards - did you use all your flags or something?
i could have sworn it was at 0 a minute ago. ;P
I like flags. They're the equivalent of AU patriotism.
@jrg Could you please pass this on to the other moderators then?
I kind of want to avoid another 6-recipient email :)
(I haven't actually flagged many yet. For many, I'm just editting and retagging to on-topic-ness)
jrg
jrg
ok, sure
(I know. i'm just giving you a hard time. :))
02:01
Gotta run now.
jrg
jrg
Oh fun, 400 questions for error. i'm going to need more music.
^--- spartan tabs
jrg
jrg
god, this is so annoying.
02:07
You better ask something, or Chrome is may attack you, friend
jrg
jrg
if you make more than X requests to SE in some period of time
it goes and destroys your cookie
so i have to log back in
and then reload those tabs, one at a time.
RAGEEEEEE
jrg
jrg
somewhere in SE HQ, there is a nagios alert going off that is saying ALERT: MODERATOR MASS EDITING. CODE RED
holy crap, @JacobJohanEdwards - we're the entire front page.
Shall we lay off for a bit?
jrg
jrg
nah.
best to get it all done if we can, and then it'll be off the front page in about an hour
although I think I'll call it quits for the night after I finish this set of error tabs and clean up the flags.
02:19
Ugh, hate it when people accept an answer that fixes their problem, but does not answer the question asked. askubuntu.com/q/52394/24694
jrg
jrg
good choice in music on that last one. :)

jrg
jrg
ok, i'm out. just leave flags/messages in the regulators room and FOSS or I will get to them
@jrg gokurosama
jrg
jrg
I'm hoping you're not swearing, calling me names or anything like that. ;)
02:44
Hey @jokerdino
hey there
is the UDS session on #askubuntu over yet?
suddenly, i have this overwhelming awesome feeling for #hashtags. No idea why.
UDS is over for the day, so yeah, probably.

for what?
There is a May 7 data dump. Yay
It's a good idea if we have always have fresh data. It's all CC-BY-SA, and SE may one day be inappropriate for us. Plus, sweet data analytics
I check that every time there is a new data dump.

Protip for growing the site's administrative middle class: visit this page and start upvoting.
So I now have the unity badge. wut?
is that for promoting Unity?
wow :-)
wut?
i would just delete it then

I'm here compliments of my Kindle.
Somebody mentioned something about the data dumps earlier?
(I'm using the mobile version of chat so I can't see who is here right now.)
good morning!
06:08
can someone (mods or 10k+ rep users) tell me what's in here? - askubuntu.com/questions/85461/…
Page Not Found
and preferably, my contribution in that post as well.
Oh sorry, i'm not 10K rep user :)
hi all
@aking1012 o/
06:12
@jokerdino some ia32-libs (multiarch) issues with the 12.04 alpha and skype
@htorque did i edit something there?
Why i'm keep seen codes like this on chromium?
But my setting is look like this. Do you know why guys?
@jokerdino yeah
one answer
makes sense
so that's why i lost 2 rep :)
06:26
@Achu where are you seeing that code?
ah, you are referring to the fonts for monospace
No, i didn't but now i changed the fixed-width-font to "Monaco" but there is no change.
it probably is the website design?
Can you see the same thing on the above page?
06:30
seems different
Yeah... is that mean it's taking the system font?
that could be a possibility
Ok, i need to change that
but there is no option under chromium to use system font.
change system font and see if that changes anything
ok
06:44
Nop That doesn't not solve the problem
even under AU
what font is it?
I don't know :)
My all system font settings are on using "Ubuntu" font but i don't know that font come from.
07:04
@jokerdino looks like old junit 3?
iirc one uses annotations nowadays
you talking about the font or the code?
i have nothing much to say about the code

Q: Revamping the Duplicate question System

wafflesNow that we have over 3 million questions on Stack Overflow, the "Duplicate Question" problem is becoming way more difficult to handle and address. We are seeing over 130 possibly duplicate questions on SO, handling them is always very tricky. We have been kicking around some radical ideas to h...

I am seeing a major mess coming around.
07:32
Hello all
@Achu Did you install msttfcorefonts?
@jokerdino That post is having gender bias
:P
jokerdino's unity answering almost made me install unity today
wow
wait, you still haven't installed it yet
let the stalking begin :>
I even went as far as sudo apt-get install unity
then I realized some stuff was missing and I should probably do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
then I saw the loads of packages, some of which aren't even necessary for unity...
and thought better of it. then I did sudo apt-get purge unity :-)
honestly though, you liking unity, jokerdino? People keep saying it's better :-D
07:42
it's good =)
lol, can we chat off-the-record? :-p
some vulgarity filled chat ensued
you can't go off the record here.
but, if you want, i am up on G+ for chatting
we can try that sometime... but I was trying to imply maybe your answer was kinda brief and mysterious... somehow I feel you have more to say :-)
ah, yeah :P
lol, you and aking love G+
07:45
i have a slight feeling i might lose my Ubuntu membership :)
i try not to get too emotional.
@jokerdino You renew it next year :D
you can also get booted out.
lol, he's joking but I can see there's a hint of a worry there...
@ChanHoSuh not much. but I like Google more than Facebook. inc
@ChanHoSuh it's a simple way to limit the exposure of something less becoming of public record
<--is a lurker
07:47
and what he said ^
speak of the aking
definitely G+ has a lot going for it... it's just missing one essential
i wonder how me answering Unity questions made you almost install Unity.
I get curious about the stuff you discuss
07:49
I realize I am answering more software-center design related questions these days.
but alright, if you make little videos about Unity, then I guess I wouldn't bother... or maybe that would make me want to install it even more :-)
I have read the specifics quite thoroughly. that might have helped.
Unity videos? Don't we have so many of them already?
there is always the issue of quality
I keep switching topics at ease :)
In other words, I stopped making sense.
2 stars already for you lol
07:53
>.<'
so aking's remark about not watching star wars gets a star from me :-)
I am sorry. :)
it's kind of interesting though... there are a lot more people that haven't watched it... but they know all the major plot points
@ChanHoSuh Like for instance, me
I come from a very different cultural background from most of you. that should explain some of the questions.
07:54
I get my knowledge from memes
I HAZ MEMETOPIA!
do you visit meme-specific sites?
like knowyourmeme?
not often. but i do visit 9gag once in a while
I watch their videos
and 9gag, lotsa 9gag
yes, we know Amith :-)
re: Unity, I stopped liking it. I stopped being a fanboi of it a while ago.
07:57
I generally am oblivious to memes, but once in a while, for the major ones I will look it up on those sites that research memes
I now switch between Unity, Unity-2d, Gnome-shell and Lxde for a week or so
Lxfe...
The Lubuntu one, however it is spelt
Lxfe was more interesting :-)
08:00
lxde seems good... openbox and pcmanfm are light but very capable
And whatever happened to my online stalker (@AmithKK)
I have an openbox session just for kicks
probably looking at 9gag
I like the lightweight. I most often just need a browser and a notepad.
@jokerdino I'm not Stalking you
I'm pretty sure I'm not stalking a ubuntu user too
I am not saying you are stalking me.
I was just hinting, there was once a user who almost was.
08:02
jokderdino were you the one that asked me about a lightweight browser a while ago?
and probably is still is.
I used to stalk @MarcoCeppi
@ChanHoSuh yeah
well, one I tried for a couple weeks was uzbl
ok. i have to leave now. I am watching my school team play Rugby =)
nice chatting with you all!!
08:03
good night
not night yet o.O
but bye
@jokerdino cya
anybody here use Chrome and synaptics trackpad driver?
08:19
@Oli does
hehe, Oli not here :'-(
I was wondering if synaptics driver in 12.04 has three finger swipe... I couldn't find any info about it in the synaptics docs.

How do I prevent Ubuntu from changing my laptop screen brightness level? http://askubuntu.com/questions/134812/how-do-i-prevent-ubuntu-from-changing-my-laptop-screen-brightness-level?atw=1 #brightness
@AmithKK No i did not installed msttfcorefonts
@AmithKK Do i have to install it?
@Achu Nooooooooo
08:42
ok :)
I have approximately 50 .deb packages, it will be a pain double clicking them and wait for software center to open and then click on install and do this all process approx. 50 times. Is there any easy way to install these packages?
@Santosh Yes
Just put them all in a folder
cd into the folder
and run dpkg -i *.deb
08:59
@Santosh how do you have 50 debs that aren't available from repository?
@aking1012 The asker is always right :P
Yes, but encouraging aptoncd or a portable repo schema so you can use the gui tools could also be a better idea than wildcarding dpkg
Agreed
@AmithKK If it's a low bandwidth type of issue that is...which is why I asked why/how?
09:47
Can I somehow specify which files adduser writes to instead of /etc/passwd?
10:30

Well that's interesting. The Nasdaq website provides a list of symbols and basic data for NYSE and Amex. How weird is that?
@QuestionsFeed Am I to take that being CW and by community as edit the answer with suggestions? I'm not sure what that means.

Q: Choosing a site for update Manager

MitchI think everyone should be allowed a stupid question, so here is mine. Does it matter what site you choose for updates? Do you get the same updates no matter what site you choose? Thanks

@Mahesh here ! happy!
Thanks.. :)
Isn't that a dupe of the selecting an S3 mirror question?
26
Q: How can I get apt to use a mirror close to me, or choose a faster mirror?

ajmitchDownloading from the main Ubuntu archive is slow even when it's not release day, how can I get apt-get to automatically use a mirror that is close to me?

12:54
The question is more like " does it make any difference" rather than "how do i do that?"
no, it is not.
it may be a dupe of something else, but definitely not this.
ok. i saw how you reworded it with the edit. i was taking it another way
You should link to the second question for more awesomeness
onto it.. :)
and change tags on the qn and remove the extra new line, etc..
12:58
Where's the extra new-line?
it is split into two lines.
