hi

@htorque: break a leg :)
(oh wait, that's only on stage, right? :D)
Well, good luck then :D

thanks ;-)

Great answer: Where to download Ubuntu 12.04? http://askubuntu.com/questions/125264/where-to-download-ubuntu-12-04/125269?atw=1#125269 #download

@shanethehat Hi there, wanted to discuss the issue with your bounty

it was just a typo, and as it turns out the question is now answered

11:21 AM
is it me or are there a bunch of "can't login" questions?
surely that many people can't forget their password

I have suggested on so.meta that an edit period could avoid such flags in the future
@MarcoCeppi so sorry for the useless flag :)

@shanethehat cool, in the future you can pop in to chat and flag down a moderator. The only way to have it fixed is if the a moderator removes the bounty (refunds it) and you re-create it.
It's no problem!

yeah, ChrisF explained that as I was submitting the flag: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/130865/…

jrg
@JorgeCastro no, most of them are actually related to permissions.
i've encountered those login issues multiple times since release day, its really weird.

@JorgeCastro - I had a hard time logging into chat this morning. Had to sign out of every SE site I had open, then log back in to askubuntu before chat would let me in.

11:36 AM
@shanethehat no we are talking about logging into the system :)

fair enough, then I have nothing further to report!

11:50 AM
I'd like to know if Ubuntu packages softwares on their own or it just copies the Debian's repo.

jrg
@harisibrahimkv It does both.

Oh. So does Ubuntu developers include Debian developers as well? Or is it such that the packages packaged by Ubuntu will be available only in the Ubuntu repo and won't be uploaded in the Debian repo?

jrg
Sorta but not really. There are some packages that won't get upstream to debian, but there are others that ubuntu imports from debian.
i think there is a question about that somewhere...

Q: Does Ubuntu import the Universe repository from Debian?

Q: Who compiles all the packages that are part of ubuntu?

//Checking questions.
Hmmm.. It says there are certain softwares that are packaged specifically for Ubuntu. But isn't that redundant? As in, softwares packaged for Ubuntu will have to work on Debian too right? Considering both use dpkg as well as apt and its friends for installation.
All these thoughts originated when I was trying to install the gem2deb package on m system. While it was not present in the Debian Squeeze repo (I had to build it from source), it was available in the Ubuntu repo. So I was wondering if Ubuntu had copied the packages from Debian, then it wouldn't have had gem2deb in its repo. Or is this because Ubuntu takes packages from Debian unstable too?

12:09 PM
I think Ubuntu imports the repo from the Debian unstable.

Entirely? //googling

well, 12.04's repo was imported from Debian Wheezy.
I think non-LTS imports repo from Debian unstable while LTS imports from Debian stable.

Q: nVidia 9800 GTX+ X11 fails to initialize. no unity or lightdm

rlemonI have just upgraded my work pc to 12.04, installing updates during the install, and after everything has loaded (with no errors) and I restart I get brought to console 1 tty login. Console 7 looks like this: IIRC I did not have to finagle with my drivers on 11.10 to get this card working. If...

@rlemon That is ugly. :O
You keep running into issues :/

this is a different pc :P
what is strange to me is
> Lastly I tried $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current which tells me nvidia-current is already the newest version. so I ran $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-current which says /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: nvidia-current is broken or not fully installed.

12:19 PM
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-current then?

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gtk-smooth-themes : Depends: gtk2-engines-smooth but it is not installable
 libapache2-authenntlm-perl : Conflicts: libauthen-smb-perl (<= 0.96) but 0.91-4build2 is to be installed

@rlemon Why not try apt-get with -f?

$ sudo apt-get install -f --reinstall nvidia-current ?

just until -f

Yeah. sudo apt-get install -f
Hopefully, it should clear out conflicts and broken packages problems.

12:25 PM
looks promising

Let's not be fooled. ;)

seems like you messed up the upgrade somewhere.

Must have happened if you quit any apt-get processes in between. Or maybe you tried installing something without apt knowing about it.

@jokerdino i didn't upgrade. fresh install.
I did nothing.
I downloaded 12.04 32 bit from the site.
backed up my data
fresh installed. like i mention in the post don't i?

never mind, the problem doesn't look too serious. hopefully, we can sort this out.
> I have just upgraded my work pc to 12.04,

12:29 PM
my bad, I put a disclaimer now that this is a fresh install... i see where i was confusing
yea I consider upgrade to mean i was using 11.10, now i'm using 12.04 .. i forget there is an 'upgrade' utility

so, is the nvidia-current installed now?

looks like it. i'm going to attempt a reboot with that card enabled now.

All the best. :)

if that fails i have nvidia.com/object/unix.html and I will try the drivers from the site.
i hate developing on one monitor :<

@rlemon check the comment on the question

12:33 PM
cool. well it looks like i'm making some headway. so bb in a few gonna try this.

Hi guys! aren't you hungry? here , fill up, it is great ha.. :-)

nope.. nothing.

Anyone has any idea about how I can move my grub to another Ubuntu partition?

12:39 PM
i generally transport grubs on the end of a long stick

@jokerdino your boot mountpoint or just where grub is installed

no not those!!
boot mountpoint? I don't know what that means.

/boot is where all the stuff grub looks for lives

I had grub being configured by Ubuntu. After upgrading Lubuntu, it is now handling my grub and I don't like it.
I don't know if I am clear enough. Hmm

oh. iirc you can install grub to /dev/sdXY instead of just /dev/sdX, then have one grub chainload the other.
it's for old grub, but the theory remains the same

12:50 PM
not sure if that is what i want.
i don't know how to put it in words so you can understand.

it won't get ubuntu and lubuntu in the list, if would be something like ubuntu...other...memtest. when you select other, then you get the lubuntu list. that's the only way i know how to do it nicely

hi guys, this guy got a problem with the swap
3
Q: swap is only being recognized when trying ubuntu from live CD

OmnipresentI recently increased space and swap space for ubuntu on my laptop. Even though the space got increased, my swap is not being recognized. It is showing as 0 bytes of space. However, interestingly, when I boot from live cd and click try ubuntu, space for swap is being recognized. What can be caus...

is it possible to resize swap disk when running ubuntu (swapoff-a)

ok before the grub list was like this:
Ubuntu
Windows
Lubuntu

So, if I install a new kernel, Ubuntu grub updates it.

But now, the grub list is like this:
Lubuntu
Windows
Ubuntu

I prefer using Ubuntu but if I install a new kernel, I have to boot to Lubuntu to update grub.
Can I get back the previous grub list?

if you're asking what i think you're asking change the numbers at the front of the files in grub.d that generate the menu entries
lower numbers are at the top of the list

i reckon we are going to end up in a big fight. :)

12:58 PM
i may just not be getting what you're asking, but okay

I think this is what has happened: Ubuntu's grub is overwritten by Lubuntu when I was upgrading it from 11.04 to 12.04.
what you are suggesting should work but I can't see it clearly.
i guess if i upgrade ubuntu to 12.10, then Ubuntu will overwrite Lubuntu grub and i should be happy.
blah, i suck at explaining.

yes, and it will keep happening.

so change the numbering in your lubuntu install. this way when ubuntu updates, it's how you want because it's how you want. then when lubuntu updates - the numbering change makes it not affect the order of the entries
make more sense?

ok, it is not much about the ordering itself. the problem is, if i install a new kernel version in ubuntu, the grub doesn't show that. The only way to make that happen is, if i run update-grub in Lubuntu.
would your solution allow me to do that?

and grub-install on the ubuntu side didn't already do that for you?

grub-install /dev/hdx you mean?
i don't know if i tried it yet. give me a minute

1:04 PM
i think it's sdx...at least for me

@MarcoCeppi good morning!
FLAG CITY USA

sudo grub-install /dev/sda8
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a BAD idea..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists.

ok so trying to install the nvidia drivers from the website say I need to kill X before I can proceed? a user IvoWetzel said I just need to run sudo stop gdm but there is no job gdm

should i be worried?

@jokerdino why Grub on a partition?

1:08 PM
no, it told you it didn't do it

I mean why not just /dev/sda ?

@Takkat ok let me reboot and see if your suggestion worked.

You have no other boot-loader on /sda you want to keep, do you?
It's going to be overwritten.

that kinda worked, i think
it looks like the way i wanted it to be.

Things that look the way they should are the best we can get ;)

1:14 PM
hehe you are right.

If they did not only look like o.k. but indeed operate the way they should it would be asking for too much .P

Hello, Can you take a look over this? askubuntu.com/questions/128181/…

<-- is using mice only

But did u experienced this problem on your laptop touchpad? Just make a test :)

i did not

1:23 PM
Then is a problem only for some virtual core pointers...

workaround might be to set your scroll sensitivity lower

ok i can now confirm that the grub issue is settled. Thanks @aking1012 @Takkat
Sorry for being a difficult person this session.

Grub is difficult.

np and not a big deal

@JorgeCastro Updated for 12.04.
Not much of an update actually.

@aking1012 that is all System Settings -> Displays gives me
is that xrandr?

at least for me, sometimes xrandr gives me more options than displays...not options that i normally want to use, but they are there

@badp he can gtfo :)

@MarcoCeppi I now just want to know whether he concocted the idea of using dist-upgrade to downgrade on his own or he read about it on the internet

You can't down grade with dist-upgrade - it's a one way tool

(then I figured that the bug report about using past ISO releases' installers to downgrade wasn't simply shut down with a plain and simple "wtf what were you thinking why would you ever thing that'd work or be supported" and my mind boggled)

yeah, he really should have just used this: askubuntu.com/questions/58172/how-to-revert-to-gnome-classic to remove the rather than his method

I should try and "upgrade" to Windows ME at some point.
I'm sure that'll work out great.

after a long hard search Ive determined the root of my problem.... my ps is faulty and one of my six pins wasnt getting any power.. x wont use the card if it doesnt have full power... but on 11.10 it didnt check

6:40 PM
@rlemon are you having random mouse stop working problems too?
