@EliahKagan I have this error: cvg_sim_msgs/Altimeter.h: No such file or directory
when installing ROS
how can I install altimeter.h?

12:22 AM
@Unnamed What command did you run that produced that error?

@EliahKagan I had an error running catkin_make_isolated, and to reproduce the error I run:
cd /home/juan/catkin_ws/build_isolated/cvg_sim_gazebo_plugins && /home/juan/catkin_ws/devel_isolated/gazebo_plugins/env.sh make -j4 -l4
This says when I run that:

In file included from /home/juan/catkin_ws/src/qlab/qlab/cvg_sim_gazebo_plugins/src/gazebo_ros_baro.cpp:29:0:

@TheWanderer you is bad.
I fell for it.

Network Manager keeps not wanting to connect. Now it seems to break after 2 days of uptime. Maybe taking my laptop through the subways where it tries to connect to a bajillion wifi points isn't the best for it, but one would think it could be resilient to it.
Any suggestions?

2:54 AM
@AaronHall does sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager work? (if 16.04 and higher)

@Fabby How would I know if it worked?

it should connect again?

can you explain what that's supposed to do? what is "systemctl"?
Why don't I already know what that is?
What documentation (aside from the systemctl man page) did I neglect to read?
Why doesn't the GUI allow for some kind of restart?

3:18 AM
systemctrl is the entry point into the much hated systemd.
(sorry for late reply, was responding to someone)
As to the "Why" questions: I can't answer those and hope they’re rhetorical..
/shrug

is there a doc that mentions this? or source I can read?

Do you know what upstart is?

I've heard of it
don't remember much

OK, systemd is the new upstart, so I wouldn't bother reading the docs: it's the system to start Ubuntu after grub has booted the kernel.
if the above command works, use it and remember it.
/shrug

ok so sounds like "systemd" is the body of knowledge I need to master this stuff?

3:23 AM
Yeah, but it's a bit convoluted, hence "the much hated" systemd.

I know enough of it to use it, not to develop for it.
You're a developer so for you it might be useful, depending on what you develop.
I'm not bothering learning the insides of systemd for the moment: just how to start and stop services on it.

Heh. It's pretty easy to write units for

I wokr up at 05 AM. Going back to bed.

3:59 AM
@Fabby sudo journalctl seems to have the journal entries that reflect what was happening with my wifi.

Could anyone tell me how to install Git 32bit on a 64bit Ubuntu? I'm trying to compile something which is giving me tons of errors. Appearently the cause of this is that I have the 64bit version of Git and I need the 32bit version. I removed Git, but no matter how much I Google, all I can find is "apt-get install git". Which will install the 64bit..

Q: How do I apt-get a 32-bit package on a 64-bit installation?

marioI was trying to get a game working. But I have Lucid Lynx on amd64 running while the game binary was 32 bit (no 64 bit version available and nobody was in the mood for recompiling). It lacked libfsml-windows1.5 to run, and apt-getting it failed. So I have to manually download the i386 packages an...

@icecub try sudo apt install git:i386
@icecub you may need to do sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 && sudo apt update before if you haven't done this already

@dessert Thanks, but I keep getting these errors:

The following packages don't meet the requirements:
git:i386 : Required: libcurl3-gnutls:i386 (>= 7.16.2) but will not be installed
Vereisten: liberror-perl:i386 but cannot be installed

(tried to translate it to english, hope you understand)

5:33 AM
@icecub (you can prepend LANG=C to get english output, e.g. LANG=C sudo apt install git:i386)
@icecub did you try LANG=C sudo apt install git:i386 libcurl3-gnutls:i386 liberror-perl:i386?

@dessert The lang has no effect. But in short it tells me: liberror-perl:i386 has no install candidate?

@icecub er… what the output of lsb_release -a?

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu

@icecub and how about LANG=C apt-cache policy liberror-perl and LANG=C apt-cache policy liberror-perl:i386?

5:45 AM
@icecub do sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 && sudo apt update and see if the second one changes

It does not. But it does tell me 176 packages can be upgraded

@icecub I've run out of ideas, sorry. :/

@icecub Do you have any PPAs installed?

@dessert Thanks a lot for you help anyway :) I really appreciate it. I think my provider uses his own Package lists (if that's how they're called) instead of the default ones provided by Ubuntu and they simply don't have the package
@Fabby I'm afraid my knowledge is too limited to understand what you mean. I'm just a basic / average Ubuntu user

@icecub you're welcome! :) the output of apt-cache policy could help us!

5:51 AM
ftp.stratoserver.net is not an official Ubuntu mirror

@dessert Let me make a pastebin for that. The output is a bit too large to paste here

@icecub take a system backup first. 176 packages seems a lot to upgrade

@Fabby I know but I'm not gonna risk that. Last time I did that the entire server no longer worked and I had to reinstall it completely

@icecub plesk. that's a VPS.

Nah it's a Dedicated server. I've got full root

5:56 AM
@icecub look cool: that'll add 386 architecture to your existing packages.
sudo apt upgrade

@Fabby That's the only way? As I said: last time I did that, the server no longer worked

well, contact product support then.
tell them what you need and let them figure it out.
That's why you pay the big bucks.

Ghehe true that. I think I'll do that :) Thanks

8:29 AM
Good morning, all!
I can't add any question tags at the moment because the selection menu doesn't load. Does anybody experience the same?

seems to work ok for me

Specifically the XHR request to askubuntu.com/filter/tags is redirected to askubuntu.com/error?aspxerrorpath=/filter/tags which returns HTTP code 500.
Hmm, if I remove the newstyle=true query parameter the request succeeds.

the oldstyle was better XD

Do bug reports still go to Meta Stack Exchange?

afaik yes, you can post there and the question is likely to get more attention there, but you can also post on the AU meta and any post with the tag will be checked by SE folks... apparently

8:48 AM
I'll see if it sorts itself out in a few hours.

9:31 AM
All good now. =]

@NathanOsman LOL

@DavidFoerster Now I have an error:
How did you get to that UI element because askubuntu.com/tags is working.

@Fabby I looked at the network tab in the developer console.

Q: Informatica service not coming up, Admin console not accessible

Sanchit SharmaI have installed Informatica Server in vmware workstation 10 on Ubuntu 16.04 OS. But I am facing the below mentioned issues : 1.After I start the services, using "infaservice.sh startup" command, I don't think all the services are coming up. 2.Admin console is not starting, also it gets redire...

But considering that it works again for me, I'd say it's an intermittent issue. Maybe it takes time for the change to propagate to all machines in the load balance cluster.

OK...
(i got a Noscript JSON error)

11:44 AM
@Unnamed Can you explain why you're running catkin_make_isolated and what you did before that? You had mentioned you were following these instructions, but those don't say to run catkin_make_isolated. I'm not saying you don't need to run it, but I don't know about the situation you're in where you have to run it.

that's what ddrescue is good at.

The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:

I'm using a live version of ubuntu from usb drive

Download 16.04 live

It seems to be 17.04

17.04 is End Of Life, that's why you're having these problems

2:48 PM
What is EOL?
Downloading now 16.04
Is there anything I can do until then?

@IonicăBizău You know better than that trying anything else than LTS versions with me: I'm an old fart, remember?
@karel o/
Anyway, I'm going to have a smoke.
@IonicăBizău other stuff on top of ddrescue you'll need is:
testdisk

At this point I only want to move the data from SSD to an external HDD and then I will just do a clean installation

@IonicăBizău No! You didn't listen: you need the SSD in a faulty state, you need to revover from the HDD. if that fails, you need to be able to take another copy.
ddrescue will just dd one drive to antother in the same failed state.
but if you make a mistake in the recovery process, at least you will be able to try again.

Ah, ok.
Downloading 16.04

so: external USB: OK, gddrescue, testdisk.
then RTFM and recover to the HDD (ensure it's at least as big as the SSD and has additional space to recover the files to (no -in-place recovery possible) so you'll end up with 3 copies:
failed SSD, failed HDD in recovery mode, good partition on the HDD that contains recovered files.
@IonicăBizău (I suppose you have a back up that's a few days old and you need only to recover the files made in the last few days?)

2:57 PM
I don't have backups.

Smoke & drink! BRB

3:10 PM
@Fabby i've got a server in NY with a 1Gbps symmetric uplink. Jack into the connection that feeds the internet directly here at my home in PA, transfer a 1GB file to the remote server for the upload test, transfer a 1GB file back from the remote to my system to test download
it'll show the peak rates

@ThomasWard totally impressed!
:thumbsup:
@IonicăBizău Oh shit! So you need to recover everything?
So no cloud no nothing???
you're going to spend a nice week-end trying to recover all your files...

@Fabby Well, most of the data from this SSD is online as well, but anyways want to copy everything.
OK, just started 16.04 live.

@IonicăBizău ah, well, file recovery is cumbersome.

@Fabby so, right now my network gets about 28MB/s when I'm jacked into the LAN, which indicates i'm near a cap of 250Mbps (~31MB/s) likely at the edge where my pfSense sits. so with regards to teh speed increase, if I get somewhere in the realm of 100-125 MB/s download speeds from within the LAN then I'm in the gig range, with the drop being related to the network filtering at the border.

@IonicăBizău sudo apt install gddrescue testdisk
@ThomasWard Just starred that to make everyone here envious: >:-)

3:15 PM
heh
well, the problem is, I know i'm not on a gig symmetric...
Comcast Cable Internet is the only provider servicing my apartment building right now

@Fabby OK, unable to locate both of them

but for 12$ more, you will be

and they don't give gig symmetric to residential-class plans
@Fabby 1Gbps down, 250Mbps up if I read their data right

@IonicăBizău you know the drill: look at the universe you need, change the mirror server to one that's fast and updated, ...

it's still a massive increase from what I had :P

3:18 PM
He used to be a regular here and should know that.

yawns I need coffee
too bad i'm trying to cut back on caffeine because my heart rate is too darn high with the caffeine intake I normally have

Also, connected my HDD

@ThomasWard I've just been to the doctor for my 10-yearly checkup and the only thing he had to say was "you have a too high lung capacity for someone not doing any sports". Duh!
(still awaiting blood tests though)

sdc2 seems to be HDD. and the sda2 is my SSD

3:21 PM
sda =ssd; sdb = USB? sdc=HDD? @IonicăBizău

Exactly

resize sdc2 with 112GB, so you have enough space on there to get a full image of sda

Any idea why I can't write anything on my HDD?
I've just formatted it as ntfs
@Fabby Sorry, I'm not sure what I have to do now...

@IonicăBizău then resize it even more to that you can write all the data from the EFI partition and the data partition of sda (100G extra)

So, sda2 is my laptop's SSD and sdc2 is the external HDD.

3:24 PM
gparted, resize sdc2 to become smaller
Do I have to tell you everything? then we'd better take a room.

Q: What is the difference between reboot and shutdown in Ubuntu/Linux?

Dark Matter Yesterday I shut my computer down to physically move it from the gui. Then I turned it back on. @terdon I still fail to see how askubuntu.com/a/1026737/117103 is an actual answer. Can you educate me please?

@guntbert Well, it is an honest attempt to answer as far as I can tell. Why do you say it isn't? What am I missing?
It would benefit enormously from some editing and it isn't a particularly good answer, but it does look like an answer to me. But it is entirely possible that you need to educate me.

@terdon, no it is ok - I essentially saw the first paragraph only :-( And that contains all flags for "this is a thank you comment", so it definitely needs improvement but is honest. Thanks for taking the time :-)

Oh, it absolutely needs improvement, no argument there!

If any Lubuntu/LXDE users are around, this question about creating a launcher for a custom command (I think they want it in the application launch bar in their panel) shouldn't be too hard to answer -- or maybe it's a duplicate of something.
