@Takkat windows boots from /sda
17:13
@seb so in dual boot (i.e. without BIOS selection of boot drive) Grub should be in the MBR of /sda as well. See also this answer, or this tutorial on Boot Repair for more on how to install/repair Grub. Take care to not overwrite the Windows partiton boot records.

18:48
@jrg ok so after just running the 'update to 12.04' from the software center i'm getting a few errors
"hard disk problem" click "examine" and nothing happens
and a few other 'errors' have poped up
should I just download and fresh install?
jrg
jrg
check your smart data.
yea i'm just going to download and fresh install... i'll feel better about the stability of my system.
I have a 1TB ext. drive for backups so it's no biggie.
thank goodness for google + github.
all of my browser settings, contacts, email, calendar, etc... and code is already backed up
just backup my movies and i'm done :)
jrg
jrg
Yeah, I <3 github for my code. I just have this fatal flaw: I don't always remember to push.
ohh and ubuntu one means all of my pictures are already backed up
i push too much because i'm afraid of that.
i save like every line... push pretty much as soon as i test it.
ugh... i've been lazy with backing up my movies... normally I back them up as soon as i've downloaded them too free up space on my SSD... but after removing windows 7 (28GB) I have gotten lazy with it.
if i make a script like this:
#! /bin/bash
$($0)
and run it, is it going to 'hang' my system???
18:56
heheheh $($); in the console will hang your system (req. jQuery)
the simplest way: try it.
what??????
Google offers 1TB of storage on Google Drive for about $50 / month... sound like a good deal?
it looks harmless.. whats gonna happen there?
jrg
jrg
No, not at all George.
18:57
@GeorgeEdison for online storage? no
jrg
jrg
Get a 1TB drive and host it at a colocation company for about half that.
quick search... brings me this...
Sounds interesting.
18:58
~$7/month for 10TB
@rlemon did nothing....
Woah. But Google Drive offers more than just raw storage though.
@Mahesh browser console.
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison that's also with the rough equivalent of a micro ec2 instance.
Oh that's right... I forgot about S3.
19:00
and how do i get to that in firefox? should i search the webd menu now?? :(
jrg
jrg
Whereas (as you mentioned) Google Drive isn't just storage.
yeah, they also analyze and use your content!
3
ADrive sounds like a bargain.
@Mahesh the console?
that's no fud by the way, you can read it in their user agreement.
19:01
@Mahesh in FF CTRL+K in chrome CTRL+J
errrrr CTRL+SHIFT+K/J
Heh... they offer 50GB for free off the bat.
@GeorgeEdison what do you want the storage for?
pictures? code? just random shit?
Nothing yet... just curious.
ok.
I may need it in the future.
WAIT A MINUTE!
19:02
ok. it did hang my FF.
@rlemon: Please read this.
It's $1.2k a month for 10TB.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
jrg
jrg
Ouch, yeah ouch.
wow yea their front page is very misleading.
rackspace.com/cloud/cloud_hosting_products/files/pricing rackspace is like 153 for 1TB storage no bandwidth.
Back to Google Drive...
jrg
jrg
I told you, do a colo with your own HDDs.
19:04
/me wonders how much staticIP + WD Black 1TB drive would cost in comparison.
jrg
jrg
its cheaper, you know exactly where it is, what is going on, and you have complete control over it...
I guess $7 / month for 10TB sounded too good to be true.
@jrg Can you give me an example of a company that does that?
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison Any ISP.
@GeorgeEdison can u give an example of a company that 'accidentally' captured sensitive data while its bots scanned streets for panaromia?
jrg
jrg
Blue Bridge is a company here in Cleveland that does it - they don't mention their pricing up front, but if you ask nicely, they'll give you a estimate. - bbnllc.com
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison Yeah. Just talk to them, they should be happy to help and give you an estimate, and if it's a smaller company, you can probably get some wiggle room with how you do it that'll make it easier. :)
It's not a small company :)
jrg
jrg
small means smaller than AT&T. :P
Well... maybe they're a bit smaller than AT&T.
how do they say: it's not about the size! :D
According to Wikipedia:
jrg
jrg
You can't run SkyDrive on Ubuntu.
Revenue: 8.2 Billion (2010)
So it's not that small...
(That's also very old data - someone needs to update that page.)
i'm so thinking i'll just get a static ip... i have like 10-20TB worth of HDD/ ext HDD currently.
why do I need online storage :s / just keep myself online.
19:13
can't you use a service like dyndns?
But then how does that offer geographic redundancy? :P
/me burning 12.04 64 bit
I wish I could go 64-bit but I'm installing in a VM and my CPU doesn't support hardware virtualization.
...so I'm stuck with x86.
I suppose I could use qemu...
...but performance goes out the window (even with my new SSD).
@jrg: I just thought of an idea for that pro-forma script. What if I created a PHP script that generated the JSON from the Meta question automatically?
That sound like a neat idea?
19:46
hi!
hi @BrunoPereira ... you arent supposed to be here ;)
@fossfreedom I just arrived, trying to make this thing call home... But have no permitions to install software in business centers computers at hotel.... :/
Maby I can stick my USB Ubuntu and override all this crap??? :P
... sometimes I wish I could do that at work - but the BIOS is clamped and the hard-drive is encrypted... no choice but to use vista :(
They make me use bing for searches! Cant be much worst than this :(
3
... you're state-side ! get use to the microsoft way of doing things!
19:52
vista? why on earth?
just dont ask ... technology company... MS partner and all of that!
Need to buy a converter for my laptop's power supply, was follish enough to not to do so on the plane. Tomorrow will be solved and I have internet in the room. Time for huge amounts off beer!
@htorque you would be surprised....
so they were forced into early adopting vista? i used it for a half a year and went back to xp :D
i can live with a windows 7 system for work, but vista... no way.
IE, file explorer with limited access, Word, Power Point, Excel, calc, freecell and solitaire <---- Thats the idea hotels have about needed software in a business center -.-
I do love the hardware, its a Lenovo ThinkCentre, looks sharp, wondering how much these things cost...
20:22
I hope they at least have chrome frame installed on those IE instances
i somehow doubt it.
Security? We don't need security...we have deepfreeze <--some colleges are famous for this one
@lazyPower WANT
@lazyPower that's neat.
@aking1012 our school had something similar. fortunately, quake 2 was easy to set up at the beginning of every CS course. :D
20:34
I know right? that is going to be ridiculously handy once its polished.
Can't install Ubuntu on AMD Athlon XP 2100 with MSI graphics card http://askubuntu.com/questions/127994/cant-install-ubuntu-on-amd-athlon-xp-2100-with-msi-graphics-card?atw=1 #installation
start a github repo and want better issue tracking? branch and slap that bad mamma jamma in it
good ugt morning
ugt morning @wisemonkey
did you ever get that kolab thing sorted out?
working on it right now
going to try it out will let u know in few minutes
20:49
@lazyPower Too bad Ruby is a no-go on my hosting account.
(At least until Ondina.)
@BrunoPereira: Bing for search results? That's a human rights violation.
@GeorgeEdison until then, this looks interesting for small sites: alwaysdata.com
Hey... free Django hosting!
@GeorgeEdison well the first thing you do is bing google, then follow the link
should I add my answer that I put into my question as an answer?
http://askubuntu.com/questions/127049/help-trying-to-get-two-finger-scrolling-to-work-on-asus-ul80vt#comment152450_127049
Though I'm not sure if "reinstall fresh 12.04" is a good answer? but it's how I fixed my two-finger scroll error (and my trackpad shows up correctly in xinput list) - I'm sure I probably *could* have fixed it by removing all the relevant packages and config files... (but reinstalled due to messing up ubuntu boot by removing plymouth)
@Dan2k3k4 It works for me by performing a clean install is a useful comment, idk about an answer
21:02
Then my question will remain unanswered :(
@aking1012 I see services started on ipv4 but still no luck with actual webpage :-/
For the love of humanity... why are spammers now sending messages to multiple recipients, exposing my email address to even more people?
@wisemonkey so they're actually listening now on ipv4 interfaces, do you get a banner if you telnet to it and hit enter a couple times?
@GeorgeEdison no courtesy in that spamming world. they could at least BCC
telnet ... so just telnet <internal ip> ?
telnet -- no route to host
though ping is successful
@GeorgeEdison that's not exactly new?
21:08
@wisemonkey: What port are you trying to reach?
@htorque I don't know whether it is or not - I just noticed it.
annoying nevertheless...
@wisemonkey locally: telnet 192.168.1.X 443 you should at least get connection refused
start locally and work your way out
ohh I need port ok
i noticed something weird: i connected to my samba share from my android phone and i didn't need any credentials. isn't that kind of a security flaw?
nope I get no route to host @GeorgeEdison: 443 (https)
21:11
Maybe there is some sort of firewall in place?
yea trying it locally only (from other computer on same network)
@wisemonkey i would start on the same computer, then work my way out, but that's me
ok lets try that -- do I need to provide ip address in that case?
connected with escape charater ']'
^]
21:13
okay so it's listening on the interface...your other computers just don't know how to get there. are you sure you're using bridged?
let me check again
Adapter1 -> Bridged Adapter / Intel gigabit -> promisc mode = Deny
then it sounds like for whatever reason it's not replying to arps
router issue?
shouldn't be unless you've got one mac per switch-port set up
hmm I can telnet to other computers
looks like centOS or VBox issue
I've one ubuntu server in Vbox let me try that one
21:18
@jrg have you seen or heard anything about : hackety.com ?
its centOS :-/
I'm gonna try kolab on Ubuntu 32 bit will let u know guys in few hours
I can telnet to ubuntu guest but not centos guest
21:33
@wisemonkey that should be a setting in /proc/net somewhere
well if I don't know much about it rather than trying to get it somehow working, I would try to get kolab compiled on ubuntu
this is true...ubuntu for the win anyway
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower i'm core ubuntu maintainer. ;)
for hackety? nice.
jrg
jrg
yup. well, technically thats my title, i'm more of a bug triager. ;p
21:48
ok now ubuntu 32 bit started installing I'll go get something to eat lets see :)
Nothing wrong with that - just caught up with the project thanks to the change log
jrg
jrg
we do need to release here soon.
(Pseudo) Official Announcement: If anyone has spare room on a server with PHP installed and would like to host a mirror for StackMobile... please email me.
@GeorgeEdison Is that the only thing it needs is php installed?
Just PHP and the libcurl extension for PHP (quite common).
21:59
i'll need to drop in some nginx love - but i can satisfy that request on a micro server I have deployed.
Oh wait a minute...
...does nginx support some form of URL rewriting?
Ah, whew..
I'll look into that then.
I have a server already deployed with php and apache if you prefer
just a bit of provisioning magic on this side.
Whatever works best for you works best for me.
I'm grateful for anything.
22:00
Ok let me get at you on Google
K.
@lazyPower Actually, I have to catch a bus soon. Would it work to catch you later or maybe communicate via email?
Certainly.
Thanks so much.
I really appreciate it.
Not a problem
happy to help :)
I'll see you all tomorrow then.
(Hopefully.)
22:17
@GeorgeEdison: how much does reliability of server matters?
I've spare resources I can let u host it, though sometimes goes down for 5 minutes -- general once a day reboot
22:31
grr, having trouble finding a suitable icon for the lenstoggler(tidied up everything else, like launchers in /usr/bin and a .desktop file)
22:45
anyone else having this issue?
just installed 12.04 fresh.
yes, i just set my resistance to 1 and press super
resistance?
there's a gconf setting for how sensitive the edges/launcher are
ahh
I always press super so never seen it
plus main machine I use gnome-shell only VMs run Unity doesn't matter if its auto hide or not
i set it to nothing(1, 0 produces mixed results). it's much more necessary on multiscreen since reasonable sensitivity makes your mouse hang at the screen edge
22:49
oops just realized ubuntu removes folders downloaded to tmp :P
centOS didn'y
didn't
it's a good thing
tmp should be flushed, if you want tmp storage with permanence use a folder in ~/
yup it is but got used to folder being there as in normal cases I don;t use tmp at all
ohh that didn't go so well
that was exact reason I left ubuntu and tried centOS last time for kolab
Hi guys, anybody knows if 12.04 32 bit supports more than 4GB of ram?
