Q: VLQ Flag - what should I do?

ubashuI am new to the VLQ queue. I was met with this answer to review (as VLQ): Why do you have two NTFS and two ext4 partitions? I'd suggest backing up all data on partitions except sda1 and sda2. Remove all partitions except sda1 and sda2 and then fill this empty space with one ext4 partition. ...

Q: Mysterious change to authorized_keys permissions on Ubuntu 14.04 server

amogowerOver the course of a day we were making some changes to our server (Ubuntu 14.04). Somehow during the day the public key access stopped working for our CI user, preventing our builds from completing. It happened to be that the permissions on the authorized_keys file had been changed to allow gro...

@ThomasWard I already learned enough on that (and like everyone, will keep learning that as more SE sites are born) but sometimes I can see things a bit differently or interpret in a non-orthodox way. Anyway, at the start I posted it on on serverfaut but given to low view count I deleted it and desired a security expert's take on this issue. Anyway, I'll bring back the post there.

Q: How to add Nginx object caching for a CMS application (WordPress website)?

user9303970I am having trouble applying object caching in Nginx, based on this article (which I visited after failing to understand the official Nginx documentation on this). I tried to add this to the very end of the http{} block in nginx.conf: ## Nginx FastCGI Cache fastcgi_cache_path /var/cache/ngi...

I've found a couple of accepted answers that are wrong:
askubuntu.com/questions/972955/… and askubuntu.com/questions/967695/… however I don't have the reputation to comment on them. One is locked, the other I can answer. The answers probably were correct a few months ago but since then things have changed and they are definitely broken. What's the right thing to do here?
09:39
@SeanComeau You should add a correct answer to the first one, this will gain you at least one upvote so that you can then answer the second one as well.
@dessert Okay I'll do that

I'm shaking my head in disbelief at the strange behavior of netplan. It's definitely going to take some getting used to

Q: systemd cannot find PID file after YAJSW wrapper startup

PawełI have a systemd startup script for a forking service (let's call it foo) based on YAJSW (Yet Another Java Service Wrapper). The relevant part of the .service file looks like this: ExecStart=/opt/foo/startup.sh ExecStop=/opt/foo/shutdown.sh Restart=always Type=forking PIDFile=/opt/foo/wrappe...

@SeanComeau Thanks for sharing your knowledge, have an upvote. :)
10:49
@dessert Thank you, much appreciated!
Okay, so now I have enough reputation to post on the protected question. Is it better to comment on it, answer it, or link to my other answer?
@SeanComeau write an answer for this exact question, if you copy parts of your other answer that's fine IMO
@SeanComeau maybe add the version number of netplan you tested this on and (with a comment) request clarification which versions the other answerers used
this way the answer could read „for version xy do this, for version yz do that“
it's perfectly fine to link to other answers in cases like that as well, provided you got to know which version(s) support which syntax
hmmm.. okay this is weird. So it turns out addresses can take a single [10.1.1.1/24] argument. What was causing the problem is that gateway4 will not, HOWEVER, the error message from netplain --debug generate actually points to the addresses argument.
I see that their answers don't give gateway4 an array, I must have made an error when I copied these. I'm just going to change my answer to list the other syntaxes and leave it at that
11:12
@SeanComeau sounds legit
Well, I feel like a dumb ass but at least I left something useful behind
@SeanComeau and you learned something about the not so intuitive syntax of netplan, hooray!

dammit
that song's stuck in my head now

@Mitch deleted over a year ago and now there is another answer with 4 upvotes stating the same...
… which is three years old :)

I would still undelete that answer. I don't see any good reason for it to have been deleted before, and I don't see any reason for it to remain undeleted. (It was deleted manually by a moderator so I cannot cast an undelete vote on it. Normally I'd flag when coming across something like that, but @Fabby has mentioned it here which should get it some attention. :)
That deleted answer contains information not present in the answer about the same tool that was posted subsequently, and a usage example that is not similar to anything in that other answer. So even if the order in which they were posted were the other way around, it would still not make sense for it to be deleted.

Btw I meant to say that I don't see any reason for it to remain deleted (not for it to "remain undeleted," which it currently hasn't been). Sorry for the confusion, folks.

Q: How to stop Ubuntu in Windows 10 from outputting files with #000D added to the extension?

Jay1995How do you stop Ubuntu in Windows 10 outputting a .txt#000D file instead of a .txt file I need to be outputted? Can any WSL users speak to that? Is it a way of making files that usually don't have a suffix on an Ubuntu system appear from within WSL to have no suffix, while communicating their type to other Windows programs like explorer.exe?

Where's that excellent apples NAA post on meta?
Ah, found it.
This one, if anyone is puzzled by what I was asking.
Ah, yes. And there is also this one on the network-wide meta site.
@Fabby That answer has been undeleted. :)

@EliahKagan I'd have to install WSL again. How urgent is this?
@EliahKagan Maybe @Serge asked for it to be deleted...
@Fabby I assume not urgent. I'm just curious. It's not my question and I don't have any Windows 10 systems to test it on anyway. I just thought it was interesting and that someone here might know.
@Fabby That's still not a reason to delete a perfectly valid answer, he could make it community wiki instead.
@EliahKagan Ì just botched my Windows and have to restore some files first.
(I used it to change the colurs of my keyboard only as there is no Linux driver (yet)
Ok. Well, like I said, I don't myself need the answer, nor do I have reason to think anybody needs the answer soon. If you do end up posting an answer than I'll be interested to read it of course. But I don't recommend inconveniencing yourself even slightly in connection with this.
@EliahKagan cool! Just upvoted the original and feel bad for downvoting the copy.
19:56
@Fabby apology accepted
@dessert :D :D :D
@dessert have you upvoted here already?
@Fabby yes of course, and wrote a comment
@EliahKagan already upvoted a while ago.
Cool! thanks!
@dessert I think he could just have deleted it. I don't see anything in its timeline that would suggest the system would have prevented it. For example, if it had been an accepted answer, I believe that would be shown even if it was later unaccepted or merged from elsewhere. ...So anyway, it's hard to know.
I think mods can readily see all the flags that have ever been raised on a post, so if there was some special situation and it was indicated by flags then that's probably something Mitch would have reviewed before undeleting it today. I wouldn't worry too much, but if there's some problem with it that we're not seeing then I hope Serg speaks up or flags or whatnot. I think it's a valuable post.
if an old answer of mine got undeleted I surely wanted to know, especially if it can be improved
20:00
Does the system notify on undeletion? I was about to say that I figure it would... but I actually don't know. He would've been notified by the comment on it today, though.
So who else is going to drop by later tonight here and can upvote Serg's original freshly undeleted answer @NathanOsman @Videonauth @cl-netbox @ByteCommander
[at]zanna (who just dropped in)
Heyo
What's up?
If by "later tonight" you are including tomorrow, when the system will allow me to cast more votes, then that will likely include me. :)
Hya can you click above link and upvote?
@ByteCommander fabby collects upvotes again ;D

I'm collecting upvotes for someone else.
I'm still miffed about this:
Ehhh... still... I don't want to get shogged again
Only naturally grown, organic votes from me.

Work calling! BRB
Learned my lesson. Also, I'm still keen on getting a mod diamond by the next chance, so I have to be commendable
Apropos mod... is anyone here? I feel like there's a user who attempts to troll me...
@ByteCommander Instead of upvoting the recently undeleted post, which could be regarded as uncouth, we should just all ping Shog9 on Twitter and ask him to do it. :D
JUST KIDDING.
20:08
That An0n guy also has a rather long list of rejected edit suggestions...
/shrug
Still not sure how to react to that last comment.
@ByteCommander I'd (wait, I did!) flag as “no longer needed”
Yeah...
still undecided between that and a mod flag
but on the other hand, why bother the mod queue with this weird but so far harmless thing...
you've already been very kind explaining, just ignore him
Anyway, did the max mod flag comment length recently get decreased? 200 characters is very low...
That's kinda conflicting with the flag description "A problem not listed above that requires action by a moderator. Be specific and detailed!"
@ByteCommander I think it is lower (and has always been lower) for custom flags on comments than for custom flags on questions and answers.
20:20
hmm, possible
20:31
Custom mod flags on questions and answers let you type up to 500 characters.
(On comments the max is 200, as you mentioned.)
twitter used to have a 140 character limit, and somehow we managed...
Should be reduced.
Global politics would profit...
:(
Wouldn't formerly innocuous emojis just take on new and terrifying meanings to fill the gap, though?

How much of a fan are you?
Define this by saying which series you own. (DVD, MP4, MKV, whatever)

@dessert that is a bit creepy.
@TheXed welcome to German humor!
@Fabby hm, let's see… TOS, TNG, DSN, Voyager and the whole set of films
