Q: USB keyboard sometimes unresponsive after boot

Paul LynchI created a customized live CD using minimal Ubuntu (14.04) and Systemback. When I boot the live CD system, I get a login prompt (no GUI), and sometimes I cannot type in my user name, and hitting Enter does nothing; the keyboard acts like it is not recognized. Unplugging and replugging the keyb...

Alex HoppusI want that every opened terminal would be launched with screen session. Q: PulseAudio And VirtualBox - Weird Amputations

ChristinaNowI am trying to figure out a weird amputations problem with VirtualBox and PulseAudio. While I am playing a sound in a virtual machine on VirtualBox version 5.0.40_Ubuntu r115130 on Ubuntu 16.0.4 64bit, sometimes the sound is being cut for a few micro-seconds (or more), and I hear only part of it...

I consider changing my Desktop OS from Windows10 to Ubuntu. I saw I can use Putty in Ubuntu to have a comfortable way to save SSH sessions instead retyping IP address each time in OpenSSH. Did you have any copy-paste problems with Putty in Ubuntu? Do you prefer another SSH client in Ubuntu? Thanks.
@dessert you know how much straw I ate with these problems, care to give an advice, please?

@user9303970 There's Putty for linux? oO I just use what's in the sources, OpenSSH it is I guess (checked, yes it is).

Putty exists
I don't like it though

@ByteCommander It's like running MS Word in wine I suppose?

For me, editing ~/.ssh/config and putting all frequently used hosts and their configuration and aliases there and using the command line is more suitable.
I barely used Putty on Win, so maybe I'm just not used to it though

Welcome to Ubuntu, where even a thing as useless as this is possible.

2:13 PM
@dessert No, Putty is native

@user9303970 I just type ssh hostname usually, I guess I added the hosts to /etc/hosts before to make that possible – and it's the same username on both machines, else ssh user@host is needed.

Hehe I use Ubuntu on my servers and Laptop for almost 2 years but I guess you meant Ubuntu Desktop, thanks!
@ByteCommander what do you mean by native, that is is the formal Debian repositories?

@user9303970 last but not least, you can just define an alias like alias sshthisonehost='ssh user@IP_I_don't_remember' in your ~/.bash_aliases.
@user9303970 native = doesn't need emulation with wine, mono 'n stuff

It's in the Ubuntu universe repo

@user9303970 With what did I mean Ubuntu Desktop? I didn't refer to any GUI program if you mean that, I try my best to work CLI-only.

@user9303970 I had never any copy-and-paste problems with ssh, but then again I don't use Windows at all, and IIRC you too didn't have any problem when ssh'ing linux-linux…

2:25 PM
Thanks !

@user9303970 Also found this alternative client: sourceforge.net/projects/pacmanager

@dessert I hate putty in linux.

but never used it

@Rinzwind why do you hate it?

@Rinzwind I hated Putty back then in Windows and openssh is just fine – why bother I'd say…

2:28 PM
@user9303970 copy/paste sucks

@Rinzwind lol

In Linux as well?

@Rinzwind that's exactly what drove him here :D

@user9303970 only in linux. copy/paste in putty in windows works fine
in linux control-c was used to break out of something before microsoft decided it was to "cut" :P

@user9303970 I think it's save to say you should consider changing the client software. xD

2:29 PM
@Rinzwind I guess you meant that in Windows it sucks when working with Putty (Windows-Linux SSH)?
Yes

@user9303970 nope. windows+putty->linux works perfectly

Well, not for me

Q: Solve all trivial character problems when doing Ubuntu-Bash from Windows 10 with Putty

user9303970I have many problems when doing Ubuntu-Bash in my remote machine, after SSHing with Putty from Windows 10. when selected text automatically is stored in memory. so works perfectly
I just have to drag the cursor to auto-copy it
btw I use putty with superputty on windows :-)
tab based putty rocks
putty straight from linux you have to hold 4 keys to select and 4 to copy. my hands can't handle that :+)

So not using supper-putty was my problem @Rinzwind ?

Q: Preprocess all Bash commands you run

@user9303970 no. That's just an overlay for putty where you get 1 putty per tab you open

2:38 PM
So how come you had none of these problems?
Maybe you didn't copy paste an heredocument from GitHub GUI...

2:50 PM
BTW, is it true to say that due the sudo mechanism in Ubuntu that requires a password about each 20 minutes (IIRC), there is no security-need in a password protected screen saver in Ubuntu?

@user9303970 it is 15 minutes. And no you do not need it BUT if there is a chance there are others using your machine: 1. do not leave a command line open. 2. ALWAYS reset the sudo timer
sudo -k resets the timer
I have that added to every commandline I am the admin on.

This website may pose a risk to [my company name]

@RolandiXor I found a bug:
If scripts and cookies are disabled and I hover over "Select one" in the menus,
menu disappears

Weird - it only uses CSS, no javascript, no cookies.

If i move really fast to a menu item, I can click it.

Must be the timing of the animations

11:24 PM
Go to home page,

Does it still happen with scripts enabled?

hover over "Documentation"
Move slowly to "Select one:"
Trying to enable scripts now.

Oh I do see a bug if you slowly move over select one. I'm still trying to iron out the kinks.

Same effect, FireFox on Windows.
(yeah, shutting down now: was still working)
@RolandiXor Kinky! I like kinky!
:D :D :D

Does it work like normal if you just move the mouse over the submenus normally?
@Fabby :P... no comment

About - Why Anole @RolandiXor
same for Easter eggs...

@karel I know. The question already had multiple "leave closed" votes in the reopen queue at the time and I thought I might have missed something.

(and that doesn't look like a house rat to me neither)

@DavidFoerster The review system is great, but people constantly abuse it.
It's a real wreck tbh

@ByteCommander 30 :D :D :D
@Seth How can you abuse the review system?
Mining BitCoin????
;-) >:-) ;-)

@Fabby Well robo reviewing is the famous one, but also by not taking it seriously and slow enough to actually make good choices.

11:36 PM
Ah! Just to get a gold badge?

@Fabby Yeah, SE should put Monero mining scripts into the review system ;o)

Tssk...
@DavidFoerster :D :D :D

@Fabby among other things.
Speaking of which, I still don't have a gold badge for reopen votes :P

i still need my reopen queue gold badge as well , so that's the one I always do first.
(and in-between, and ... but if I have no opinion, I still press "skip")
Apparently we were thinking the same thing...

well I just failed an audit :P
I knew it was an audit, but I also disagreed with it.

11:39 PM
356 of 1000 so far...
@Seth You're as anally retentive as me!
(I did the same once...)
just to be able to say "Puh" to SE.

@Fabby Not really sure how being retentive is related to finding a bad audit.. but ok ;p

Knowing it's an audit, disagreeing with it and failing it all on purpose???
OK, I'd call myself that... But then, I have a high self-esteem so don't mind being called anything...
(Or maybe it's that English is just my third or fourth language and I cannot be insulted in English as any English word is just that: a word....)
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me is so true for me...

I never said it was insulting, just that (to me) the phrase's meaning has no relation on the subject

@Fabby oh that's to be expected

Ah? Lemme look up the definition then!

11:43 PM
i.e. I don't get what you mean when you say that, but that's ok

Not implemented

hi @RolandiXor!!
How's the novel coming?!

@Seth no where lol
I need a proverbial kick in the behind

Ah well. Next best thing: CSS framework xD

exactly xD

11:46 PM
@Seth The detail of being right superseding the knowing you'll fail an audit by being right seemed a good fit for that particular English idiom, but then, it's not my native language;, so I'll bow to my mod's wisdom....

@Fabby eh, I'm not super familiar with that word myself, so it's a toss up I'd say

@RolandiXor then put a "not implemented yet" 404 while still implementing...
:D ;-) :D

@Fabby on my todo list

@Seth You're just very polite and nice whereas I'm an old fart who doesn't give a damn anymore...
>:-) >:-) >:-)
(Not true: I still like to make people smile, but as I have a wicked sense of humour, I push the wrong buttons too often for my liking...)
@terdon Any question that accepts my answer as the truth is worthy of an upvote.
