Glad something like REE finally made a go at 1.9
jrg
jrg
(brightbox did it, right?)
jrg
jrg
cool.
1.9.1 is EOL'ed too, which is nice.
Something I'ld really like to see is full system cloud backups for multiple platforms. Do some hash checking like sendspace does so you don't store duplicates. Would make full system image backups crazy fast(well fast-er)
jrg
jrg
Like rsync type deals?
or are you talking more like a btrfs snapshotting backup in the cloud for multiple systems.
12:05
Sort of, I'm talking like windows users too. And not just one computer.
Like backup your corp office to cloud
Or clone an entire office for another deployment. And you only have to download each file once from the backend(with an index of which stations get which checksums etc)
jrg
jrg
Side note: This is worrying me, when I change my wallpaper in precise now (encrypted homedir), it changes in lightdm.
appears
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 oooohhh... i saw something like that.
rly?
and there's a question about that
0
A: Is there a way to shut off showing the user's wallpaper in Lightdm?

jokerdinoFor 12.04 You can choose to not show display the user's wallpaper in Lightdm using dconf-editor . To install that, run the following command in a terminal: sudo apt-get install dconf-tools Then, navigate to com → canonical → unity-greeter → draw-user-backgrounds → Untick the check box.

Just answered it earlier today.
12:08
@aking1012 Heard about it somewhere
jrg
jrg
@jokerdino But my homedir is encrypted.
But, it doesn't work the way you want. I am trying to hunt down the bug report.
jrg
jrg
So lightdm shouldn't have access to that anyway
I heard they were copying the background to /usr/share/ temporarily.
@jrg Skeptic much?
12:09
I do FDE not homedir
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK i'm skeptical, yes.
I use a non-default wallpaper and it is a different folder than the default wallpapers. By default, the permissions on this are not readable by Unity-Greeter. With the new unity-greeter switching, I would expect that if I choose a wallpaper, it would get copied somewhere (~/.background ?) with the correct permissions for Unity-Greeter or some other mechanism that gets me the added Unity-Greeter functionality. jrg
ok, brb. testing this with a new user.
@jrg Do you know something which self destructs /home remotely
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK ssh and a rm command?
12:11
@jrg One click something
like for phones and such
jrg
jrg
oh, don't know.
Amith, you are being tracked in task #70.
@jokerdino <3
12:12
@AmithKK wanna destroy something??
@Mahesh umm.. what?

What, and I'm not being tracked at all? :P
@jrg Of course you are ... in FBI's byobu session :P
12:13
@jrg You are being tracked in #19

Uh guys, i'm busy all week. Annoy me and I will hunt you down. <3
I'm out of soldering wire and its all @jrg's fault

@AmithKK i was asking..
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK Point being? ;)
@AmithKK haven't found a way yet. I will check back later. :)
Oh crap! my faulty kbd
12:15
@Mahesh Hello, by the way
I noticed something that might be a bit offensive like to @jrg :P
@AmithKK so you want to deatroy /home remotely, my question is.. why would you want to do that?
A few days ago :D
@Mahesh Somebody robs someones laptop?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh All sorts of reasons.
Lets say I lose my laptop, or something.
I have no use for it now but...
now thats something i didn't see...
jrg
jrg
12:16
Yeah its encrypted, but if I wanted to, I could do a remote wipe
boom, you have a useless laptop, and no data.
@jrg what if he robbed it while you are logged in?
Now thats a lot of ifs ahead..
We are all agents :D
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK Encrypted homedir, encrypted swap.
12:18
What if your sister borrowed your laptop without you knowing and you nuked it?
if it is connected to net, being used with an existing user accunt, and so on.. not very probable.. but sure its worth knowing..
@jokerdino He has backups
jrg
jrg
He can't get around that easily, and it'll take him long enough to do it that he'll (hopefully) get caught before then, or i'll have imploded the /home dir by then
@jokerdino Backups. And then I get to yell at my sister for stealing my stuff without asking.
:P
jrg
jrg
(granted, you're also talking to the same guy who gave his little sister root access on her computer once... that one time... ;D)

12:20
:P
epic. LOL
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK I hand them my business card and say "Github my good sir"
:P lol
Is it impossible to pwn you?
what if the state issues orders to reveal ur encryption passphrase??
jrg
jrg
12:22
Amith. Stop deleting all the questions, this is making my witty answers look stupid. :P
6
@Mahesh I don't know it.
@Mahesh "I use a token, which coincidentally was destroyed" -- it worked for enron
Yay I have done it!
jrg
jrg
Ahhhh yeah. Nice work @jokerdino!
Thanks for the latest upvote jrg. :)
jrg
jrg
12:24
... was that me? Don't think it was me. >_>
Any progress on this? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/689/stackexchange-chat-for-pidgin-empathy-etc
It would be a killer feature for the site
Not you? oops.
It was one of the guys from chat. I swear.
how do you post images n stuff here?
@jokerdino Right
@Mahesh Link them :D
@AmithKK Was that from Yes man? :D
12:25
@jokerdino Yes
@AmithKK Thought so. Thanks :D
@jokerdino np
Why is the photo turned clockwise by 90? XD
@jrg that is epic
jrg
jrg
12:27
@aking1012 Yeah. It is.
Everybody! Shower the mod with stars
No, that last one is the first one I starred...because it was epic
OMG the transcripts are preserved for what? one and half year??
jrg
jrg
.... you guys suck, show how young you are and act like 5 year olds. SHINY STUFF YEAH.
@Mahesh Transcripts are forever.
Star me!
12:29
Who is that?
jrg
jrg
... ugh. i guess i'm stuck cleaning up all the stars.
@jrg i've seen it.. :P
I'ld leave the this is my kind of camping one.
btw are deleted items preserved in transcripts?
jrg
jrg
Oh, that one is fine.
12:30
@Mahesh no
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh deleted items show up as "deleted" in the transcript.
so yes and no.
hmm.. thats good.. n bad..
It's good. It shows if someone was being abusive
I like ice cream
and its bad u cant keep trolling.. :p
jrg
jrg
12:31
Yes and no. Only moderators and the Stackexchange employees can see deleted ones.
I star for the unicorns
Ahem ahem.. now wats dat? @AmithKK
@jrg Waaat? You guys can see the deleted messages?
@jokerdino Yes :D
Not fair. because even I can't see my deleted messages...
jrg
jrg
12:34
@jokerdino Yes. Primarily so we can see trolls. However, like all the mod tools, its logged and I think there is someone at SE with a tail -f /var/log/moderators.log on a big screen tv.
hurray, Amith goes round and round.
jrg
jrg
(pipe the moderation log through ccze, and boom. Instant shiny colors)
@jrg Your wrong, they use windows
12:36
@
you can pipe output in windows
@amitkk +1 for that
jrg
jrg
@AmithKK It was a joke.
I know :D
@aking1012 how do we do that?
| doesn't work i guess
12:37
powershell can do all kinds of nifty things
kk.. never tried it.
struggled a lil wid cmd.exe b4 i gave up
jrg
jrg
I know a person who swears by powershell. Granted, she wrote the book on powershell, so yeah.
I hated cmd (windows), but I use terminal (bash) and I am liking it.
bt now, bash is something i love.. <3
@aking1012 I tried it, and it can be very powerful.
I prefer perl
12:39
hey jus to know; wat r ur opinions on unix haters handbook?
jrg
jrg
Never read it.
@Mahesh idk what that is. i love some freebsd.
Didn't read it
Serial killer upvoter in my profile. o.O
12:42
I was abut to post.. hey have you read that.. n rephrased just in case.. :P
Hey @Ariel.
(reminds me of Ariel in Tempest)
jrg
jrg
Considering how I haven't read it, I can't talk about it.
@gajdipajti Just checked the table of contents. It's either a work of comedy/satire or going strictly on headings a little misinformed.
Do read it when you can.. it has something to say..
but i infact started loving unix after reading it.. :P
Searching for "Should I use Ubuntu" or "Why use Ubuntu" in Google returns my blog post in the first page... I think.
jrg
jrg
12:46
Yep, it does.
Nice work @jokerdino! :D
I thought it was weird seeing that. Must add pictures then.
Sell Ubuntu to the crowd. :D
@jokerdino link please.. i'm toooooooooo lazy.. :P
thanks.. :) actually i didn't know which one was urs.. :P
hehe :p
12:48
if you google 'andrew king infosec' I'm the entire first page. Should I be pleased?
You want to start a war? XD
jrg
jrg
You should be @aking1012
You search for Barneedhar and I am all of the Google results :p
jrg
jrg
search for "james gifford ubuntu" and its me. :P
12:50
awesome
I think I have Google search rights over jokerdino as well. XD
@jrg You are right :D
jrg
jrg
yeah @jokerdino - your chat.se profile is #1 result.
Ask Ubuntu general room - come here, stay forever. Oh, and we have google fu.
you want to impress me get to the top for the search term snuffleupagus
3
I spend a lot of time in this chat, I guess.
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 I'm buying snuffleupagus.com tonight then.
12:51
That is not good. :S
@jrg if you do it, i'll lol soooo hard
jrg
jrg
How much is it? I've got $0.60 in the bank right now.
@aking1012 we are just having fun. Don't take me too seriously. :)
jrg
jrg
:P
hmm.. i need to teach google to honour me more.. :|
12:52
I don't always show off. I only get a chance once in a while :)
@jokerdino oh i was kidding too, did you google snuffle?
@jrg i saw that on g+ too, it made me O.O
@jokerdino and i'm sure u keep waiting for 'em :P
@aking1012 the sesame street snuffle?
@Mahesh i am a bit of a narcissistic. I Google my name everyday :D
12:54
yes the same
It looks funny. XD
@jokerdino and i google aking1012 to get to stack exchange since ctl+k aking1012 enter is shorter than most of the stack sites
2
Impressive. Hah!
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower Yeah.
Hey @aking1012 - the ATI driver tool is AMDCCLE, right?
jrg
jrg
12:58
thanks
:) we all love showing off, dont we?
@jrg I don't know why the E. AMD Catalyst ControL cEnter? They could have pulled the camel case letters out.
Hi I am switching from fedora to ubuntu. In fedora one of the core developers (jbwillia) puts up an updated image with all the patches regularly. so you don't have to update the installation immediately after installing. Is there any such "updated, patched and current" image for ubuntu
as if TMUX wasn't fun enough.. wemux jsut made tmux even MORE functional
13:03
@Ariel There's the daily build ISOs
@aking1012 and @gajdipajti thanks - are they equivalent to the stable image + patches or possibly unstable experiments as well?
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 shrug yeah.
I can't put my fingers on stable daily, but 12.04 daily build(unstable) comes up right at the top of the search results
jrg
jrg
The daily ISOs are unstable.
There are no stable daily ISOs.
13:05
This is beta2+patches which will be 12.04
@jrg It works fine for me, but it's technically still in beta...and I stand corrected
@jrg I use daily isos when I want to install a machine in my dorm, they are ok since beta1
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 Well, it works for me too, but until the week after release day I'll still call it unstable. SRUs make everything better.
@lazyPower I love that blog post.
@jrg the one about wemux?
jrg
jrg
And I'm going to use that script now that I know what you're talking about. Trying to do markdown > pdf on my own was a pain, since I was trying to do everything with any libraries.
@lazyPower oh, that one too.
13:06
@lazyPower - that's got WAT written all over it
@jrg Not even unofficial forks with updates perhaps?
dude 10 lines of ruby code has changed how i think about functional programming,t he only thing im honestly afraid of is becoming reliant on gems
jrg
jrg
@Ariel From what I can tell, no. Although its easy enough to do, so if there was demand I could probably do it myself or find someone else.
i was talking to jesse about some apps he's working on and they have a project with 100+ gems... that seems excessive.
jrg
jrg
13:07
@lazyPower yeah, thats the only real problem with ruby
You do X a lot? MAKE A GEM AND USE IT EVERYWHERE
@Ariel just a note you can choose to download updates while installing
@Ariel they are stable enough, because it will be an LTS release. I won't use a daily iso if it is from a nonLTS
jrg
jrg
I freak out once my entire gemfile exceeds 30 LOC. Which translates into about 25 gems, since I do bundler groups.
indeed, me too
bundler = pwnage for dependency management
i'm such a sellout....
indeed
very much so @aking1012
jrg
jrg
Yes and yes.
13:10
I meant to edit and hit delete :/
whoops
jrg
jrg
ok, i'm off to a conference. cya guys, have fun, and if i come back and there are stray stars everywhere, i won't be happy. ;)
Bye. :)
yeha i gotta get to work
^_^ - bye
13:11
see yinz later
Setting up my pbuilder instance again.
Just to verify my answer.
@aking1012 do I have you on G+?
let me check
I found you. And circled.
@jrg would LOVE an updated build. I am sure others would too. downloading 300MB after installs is no fun. @aking1012 that's a good idea but not if your connection is choked on bandwidth. @gajdipajti interesting point. never thought of betas of LTS being any different than non-LTS
Hope it was the right guy. @.@
13:20
@jokerdino google+ adds lag badly, but if you google aking1012 and went through personal results it was me
Yeah, got you then.
@jokerdino hey - I missed your earlier message {I am flitting between here and tex.sx} Yes, it is after Shakespeare's little troublemaker. :)
haha, cool choice of name :)
@jokerdino I was wondering all this time howshould i pronounce ur username.. found it finally.. :) joker-dino that is.. :D
i never thought it would be tough to pronounce. :)
but, yeah, it is Joker-Dino. (dino as in dinosaur)
13:28
If anyone does end up building the images with the updates incorporated, it has the potential to become hugely popular. Afterall, isn't ubuntu also targeted at providing modern computing solutions to low-bandwidth coverage regions? Having to install lesser updates and patches after a fresh installation would be a time and bandwidth saver. With more mobile android devices now able to run main ubuntu, bandwidth could be a crucial issue - as many of them are on data-restricted 3G networks
@jokrdino i was trying to split it up into all fancy things possible.. :P
@Ariel the material for an LTS is not pulled from the debian experimental/unstable, but from the testing branch. So the developers focus more on fixing than new features
@ariel Yup, thats something needed..
@Ariel you can just wait until the final release if you are low on bandwidth... at this stage of development, there's going to be lots of updates.
the point here is...
we need daily stable builds
(isos that is..)
lets see.. anyone says no?
if none.. all of u've said yes.. :P
13:33
daily builds of stable would be silly, weekly maybe. what's the release schedule for updates. it seems like it's about weekly iirc
@Mahesh Not strangely that reminds me of the tradiitional wedding services. ;-)
@aking1012 More like monthly or once every two months - or when updates reach a prespecified size perhaps.
yeah, i could be wrong
@ariel this seems sensible..
There are updated releases for LTS
13:35
@aking1012 No, I didn't mean the update schedule now. I meant that as a suggestion for the updated builds
ah, that makes more sense now.
@jokerdino i think we're talking about a respin of stable releases with updates pushed in, not the 12.04 release schedule
like the recipe for daily ppa builds? hmm
hey btw why does a dotted line appear once in a while in the log?
@aking1012 I am actually a bit surprised that we don't have something of this sort already. Maybe we do and are just not aware of it?
"daily iso builds for precise"
13:40
yeah, something like that. the only thing i worry about with something like that is an automated build system not catching something like the oversized CD-iso bug that evidenced this go-round
yes, but for stable
i don't get that bit. What?
Stable releases as in already released ones?
just like the 12.04 daily build, but for 11.10 until 12.04 goes stable
That won't make sense. because there is no development going on for stable.
13:42
there are still updates, just not daily
@jokerdino Yes, but there are updates and security patches.
so like a weekly or monthly
@jokerdino to make things clear, we are talking about having updated iso images for current stable versions so that users who want an updated system right away dont need to wait for hours or days (exaggeration?? i doubt it.. :P) for the installation to finish.
i got the point. but i don't think anyone is doing that.
that's why the discussion
13:44
@ariel says such a thing's there in fedora, so why not we have it when its useful
It is not a trivial task however. This is jbwillia's post about some difficulties involved in such an effort: jbwillia.wordpress.com/2012/03/16/need-some-help
It's trivial. install in a vm, apt-get update with an apt-cacher in effect, and do some regexing
I mean technically trivial
@aking1012 bt what if an update fails or so; or the size becomes too much.. we need a lil work on this. Probably gonna be easy, but SOMEONE needs to look at it, right?
I've never had a stable update fail for a base system...but that's just me
Size could be an issue
I've had update failures at times, but again, probably thats just me.. :)
13:52
I mean like network is stable(running in an amazon cloud instance) and trying to pull daily so if the servers are down for a day nothing bad happens.
yep.
on the bright side, the linux iso boot-loader still works if you cross the cd to dvd threshold
btw what tool can i use to make an exact copy of my system on a livecd?
pls dont suggest uck or remastersys.. i've screwed up my sys trying them..
turnkeylinux
hmm.. will try those.. thanks :)
13:58
you have to tweak the directions a bit, but turnkeylinux.org/blog/convert-vm-iso
@Mahesh ignore me. i know nothing of cloning.
and one more thing, is virtualbox on ubuntu safe? i mean.. i had this feeling somehow that i can screw up my system from virtualbox..
I use it all the time
thats some assurance, at least.. :)
it has some issues with 3d and you can't send a ctl-alt-f1. but that's about the only issue i have had until you try doing differencing disks from the same base image. THAT gets buggy fast
14:08
I've noticed i cant change virtual terminals, btw, is there a way to achieve that? a workaround?
short of multiple ssh sessions, not that i'm aware of
@aking1012 i have a task for you today
i listen
Set up a blog, and write interesting things. I need a new blog feed to add to my Reader setup that i'll actually read
LOL :D
14:11
awaits the GTFO flames
@jrg Well, I think there is a lot of interest. Posting a formal question on the main site would probably be a way to tell how many more might be interested in such an effort. As @aking1012 points out, it probably is technically feasible though a bit time and space consuming. If you could get people interested in this effort, it definitely would be worthwhile.
and write interesting things is the hard part
i don't read anything that comes through my reader. well, except for XKCD, perhaps.
@aking1012 ok, i'll leave you to ponder the zen of doing a knowledge dump on the universe like that ;) see ya at lunch.
@lazypower now i say ure truly lazy
14:14
HALP!
i can't download from extensions.gnome.org.
i am trying to install this - extensions.gnome.org/extension/276/… - clicking on the button doesn't pop up anything..
is there any other way to download an extension?
git clone git://github.com/jcrussell/Arya.git
cloning..
thanks
fatal: unable to connect to github.com:
github.com[0: 207.97.227.239]: errno=Connection timed out
o.O
The port is blocked. zz
@jokerdino you can use ssh
14:20
I can't use ssh. port 22 blocked as well.
I think only http, https and ftp is open.
k, try this:
git clone https://github.com/jcrussell/Arya.git
Waiting..
It's still cloning... :/
error: RPC failed; result=35, HTTP code = 0
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
What?
14:39
@marco it is done now. Thanks!
jrg
jrg
14:58
@Ariel Ok, I guess I have my work cut out for me this weekend.
@jrg There is also the issue of 12.04 coming out in 13 days as was pointed out earlier. So maybe starting on the updates projects for 12.04 could be a richer investment of time?
"Shared Folders" Feature Is Not Working In VirtualBox http://askubuntu.com/questions/121682/shared-folders-feature-is-not-working-in-virtualbox?atw=1 #virtualbox
That's a good point. Do for 12.04.
But, again, we have point releases for LTS at some point of time.
15:24
@lazyPower there you go
This is correct. One thing to add is that the way you created the pbuilder tarball put it in /var/cache/pbuilder/ If you don't want to go through building it all over again (as it takes some time), you can manually copy it to ~/pbuilder making sure it is named precise-base.tgz pbuilder-dist should then be able to find it correctly. — andrewsomething 15 mins ago
Got the nod of approval. \o/
15:53
ping test :D
weird, that same problem again. ask ubuntu and other sites timing out while this chat works.
the js on this page constantly updates...i think
i am going to sleep through the night and check back tomorrow then.
Good night everyone
