@TheWanderer Humbug.
Hi all, Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users reported a corrupted BIOS. It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after rebooting, the system starts with the old settings. Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do not have a CDROM. Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue. For example: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Y50-70-BIOS-Can-t-Save-Settings-or-boot-with-USB/m-p/3849142 https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Y50-70-BIOS-Can-t-Save-Settings-Or-Exit/m-p/3601285 https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/y50-70-BIOS-can-t-save-settings-and-I-can-t-boot-system/m-p/3865727 Thank you!! #### UPDATE (27/11/2017) #### LENOVO machines affected so far: Lenovo Y50-70 Lenovo G40-30 Lenovo U31-70 Lenovo G50-70 Lenovo Z50-70 Lenovo Yoga Thinkpad (20C0)

Oh my.
I knew 17.10 was bad.
how the hell
But I didn't think it was that bad.
so far 17.10 has been better than 16.04 for me
02:03
Argh.
Double argh.
wat
I mean 16.04 wouldn't sleep or anything, and during the upgrade to 18.04 it just completely crapped out on me
so I ended up having to dirty-install 17.10
so far, it's been great

WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK.
Dear @AppleSupport, we noticed a *HUGE* security issue at MacOS High Sierra. Anyone can login as "root" with empty password after clicking on login button several times. Are you aware of it @Apple?
IT FREAKING WORKS.
I can enter "root" with no password and login.
Oh Apple. Apple. Oh my. I just. Can't even.
well, APPLE, IT WORKS! wasn't that somewhen in time a adversary slogan of them?
Lol.
Can I use that joke? :P
sure go on
:D
06:48
Remember Apple's slogan "It Just Works"? Well, turns out they haven't forgotten this philosophy. You can now unlock the ability to modify user accounts simply by using the username "root" without a password. Kudos, Apple. https://t.co/cacYF06xe7
Archaeologists discover ancient artifact. Carbon dating is underway but battery life was still at 46%.

err, I mean a question. I've got a question
Context, I'm recovering a disk. The unit allocation size for a partition lives in the partition table--meaning if I choose the wrong value, I can simply change it to another value?

I really have trouble even looking at questions from people about WSL
Especially after MS issues yet-another-update that breaks everything.

@CharlesGreen I agree with you ... Hi Charles ! :)
Hi Boxy! How are you today!
17:33
@CharlesGreen I am fine Charles, thank you for asking. :) What about yourself ?
I fail to see why Microsoft is doing Linux on Windows instead of just embracing docker.
@cl-netbox Doing OK... Frustrated with my feeble Win10 VM (again!) and it's general lack of transparency
I fail to see why anybody does Windows.
They have their own virtualization product already, so putting the linux docker master container inside a VM isn't the problem...
@dessert Me too ! :D Good evening to you. :)
17:35
@dessert - I only use it for gaming. I have linux on my daily driver and win10 on a set top htpc box. Been linux only for years, but there was this one game that wouldn't work in wine, so I bought an appliance.
@CharlesGreen Why don't you simply delete the VM then ? :D
Need it for accounting purposes.
Hey ... who's jumping in there ? :D Nice to see you @ParanoidPanda ... good evening ! :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: Good to see you too! :)
Anyone have a good alternative to teraterm that supports usb->serial interface, but on the linux side of the house?
17:38
@ParanoidPanda How are you doing ? Flu completely gone ?
@RobotHumans Hi ! :) Is docker supported on Hyper-V ?
@cl-netbox Linux is. Docker runs on anything linux. It may or may not be "supported".
@RobotHumans AFAIK Hyper-V has still some restrictions compared to KVM. :)
It might. I don't see a reason to lock docker out unless it's intentional though.
meaning a linux deployment with postgres, not putting MS tendrils in to a linux box
user136984
@cl-netbox: Yes! But I got everybody else infected! :D
@ParanoidPanda What else should I expect from you ? hahaha ... good to hear that you are back to proper health. :)

Just pray you don't get a mutant circular infection. That happened one year here with swine-flu. Everyone got sick, by the fourth wave it was near a month of half of everyone sick.

Can I get an Ask Ubuntu mod to edit this post? I'd like to get the key tag (and a couple others) out, but I can't as it's locked. cc @ThomasWard
perfect timing
@KazWolfe it's locked because it was merged with another question. Why do you need to edit that specific post?
@ThomasWard key tag purge
any other tags, or just key?
Just key
Now I just need more money for coffees and equipment.
20:10
thanks! :+1:
20:24
my apologies for the massive bumping. is now gone \o/
@KazWolfe Well done! I stripped this tag from ~150 questions myself some time ago, but there were still a lot left when I stopped…
keys is another 80 questions, but i'll give it a break

hmm, it appears that building a kernel module eats just as much CPU as Gradle does:
it pegged all eight threads on my i7 3740QM
8 threads?
Oli
Oli
Yeah, the i7 3740QM is a 4 core CPU with HyperThreading. It's exposed as 8 CPUs.
3rd gen?
scrub
get 8th
get 56-core Xeon
@TheWanderer as long you pay for it? gladly I'd take one ;)
or two :P on a dual processor board
Oli
Oli
Yeah they're only 28 cores each. You'd need two.
21:48
I really badly want a Xeon in my next build.
But Ryzen is a bit more affordable.
Choices. Choices.
Oli
Oli
330W total TDP (if you can combine them like that). At least it'll keep your feet warm.
@Oli Wikipedia says 56, 200 w/ dual
yep two 2000W a+ power supplys you need at least
@CharlesGreen can you please ping me in here if you refer to me in a comment like here, i wont get pings from such a referral
