Q: What does the (!) mean after uptime on htop

brentwpetersonI was analyzing some web heads looking at htop and noticed the following Uptime: 301 days(!), 23:47:39 What does the (!) mean?

Another easter egg, a developer answered…
@dessert Why did you comment that this question: askubuntu.com/questions/979202/… is off topic because of a bug? I'm reviewing it right now.
@karel bug reports are technically OT
@karel I consider this behaviour a bug, connecting to a network should definitely not change your network settings and affect other connections.
00:14
The reason why I am asking is because I encountered a similar problem and managed to solve it with after three days of hard work troubleshooting the problem. It was caused by a software issue, not a bug.
@karel The comment itself btw is from here:

Q: What prewritten Pro-forma (aka AutoReviewComments) userscript comments can we use and share?

Octavian DamieanI'd like to gather a list of boilerplate comments (AKA canned responses) for Ask Ubuntu which can be used in combination with the awesome Pro-forma comments userscript. Post suggestions too, you are not required to use the script. Please wrap your comments into a code-block for easier copying.

@karel what is a software issue if not a bug?
The reason why I am asking about this question which is being reviewed: askubuntu.com/questions/979202/… is that I solved a similar problem which was caused by a software issue, not by a bug.
@karel How did you manage to you solve it? Is it a workaround or a fix?
@TheWanderer well wetware is also soft…
I wasted a small amount of money on new hardware and that didn't work so I contacted a service technician from my ISP by phone and he told me how to solve it over the phone.
00:23
@TheWanderer then again, a bug can cause a wetware error – it's complicated.
and sometimes bugs can persist between keyboard and chair :P
@TheWanderer I like to trick you into writing that. ;) Point for me.
I say wat at any excuse

Q: How to start screen with multible spilts directly from command line

VideonauthI'm using screenafter I have logged in with ssh to my server. 02:06
@muru I came up with this .screenrc file
chdir /path
screen -t "Apache Log" tail -n 1 -f access.log
split
focus
chdir /home/server/log
screen
split -v
focus
screen -t "Htop" htop
focus
focus
if you want to include it in your answer
Nah, you can post that as a separate answer as an example of what layout dump gives... for example, do you really need those last couple of focuses? It looks like it just dumped everything that led to this layout.
well the last focus over htop leaves me in the htop window, then two times focus to get back into the window with the bash
the layout dump doesn dump the screen commands which are running in those windows
not sure if that really rewards a second answer after i have now acepted yours
Won't be the first time I have posted a general answer showing how to do something that OP accepts and then posts an additional answer for their specific case

Q: Ubuntu locked up and strange UI changes, serious problem?

platatomiMy Ubuntu 16.04 system just locked up out of the blue, I had to hard-reset the machine. Hi I fluffed around with my touchscreen config in usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and now my touchscreen doesn't work (Dell XPS 15 9550) is there any way to undo my changes, or reset settings?
Ubuntu 16.04
mhmm was there already a file created?
or did you create it?
I think there was already a file. I did this a while ago, can't really remember
the file is 40-libinput.conf?
no. I think it's s10-evdev.conf, or 20-intel.conf

Q: What to fix with the fresh factory Ubuntu 16.04 on a Dell XPS 13 9360 (Q&A)

DiegoThe Dell factory installed Ubuntu on 16.04 has a few shortcomings that needed to be fixed before it is fully useful. Below are the things I had to fix. Please feel free to add yours as well. [NB] As suggested by the admins I have set up a thread on Ubuntu Forums https://ubuntuforums.org/showthre...

not sure if that is of any help
11:47
@Videonauth some info on touchpad, but not touchscreen
well then I'm out of clues except scouring the net for the configuration files in unaltered form, probably from launchpad sources launchpad.net
i sadly have no 16.04 installation here where i could look up the files and pastebin them for you
@Videonauth That's ok, thanks!
WHat you could do for easier finding, creating a VM (Vitualbox or KVM/Qemu) install 16.04 fresh into this VM and pull the files from there, if you end up not finding them via google searh or launchpad
12:17
Fixed with ```
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "evdev touchscreen catchall"
MatchIsTouchscreen "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "evdev"
EndSection
```
16.04 really is a pretty bad release, especially for an LTS
And apparently the -d flag on do-release-upgrade is bringing me to 18.04
Yeah, -d stands for --devel-release.
@TheWanderer normal since there is already a daily build for 18.04 and set up repost for it too
2 days ago, by Videonauth
For all the early birds out there. 18.04 daily build --> http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
12:49
What would I use to get to 17.10?
Too late now, but for future reference
sudo do-release-upgrade, or go via software&updates and set it to upgrade for every release not only LTS, do-release-upgrade -c is used to check if there is a n upgrade possible and tels you exactly which one
@Mitch are you around for a question?
Hello
Go Ahead
I found an answer of mine you deleted and i would love to hear why, since it was the first answer on that question and it had the most and accurate in my view information : --> askubuntu.com/a/759967/522934
while the wrongly stating do-releade-upgrade -d could stay
@Videonauth Kubuntu doesn't have that app, and normal dru doesn't allow for non-LTS versions by default
you don't have this on kubuntu?
how oyu then manage your repositories from GUI?
@Mitch question is if i add more explanation to that answer, would you be inclined to undelete it?
13:05
First, I honestly can't remember why, its been over a year. But yes go ahead and edit it, and I'll take a look at it.
okies :)
Q: Why does it take a couple of days before you can answer your own question?
NerdOfLinuxWhy is that if I ask a question, and then find the answer the next day, I still have to wait one more day before I can mark my answer as solved? Isn't it more productive to just let people mark it as solved so others don't waste their time on it?
Hi everyone! Just a quick question. I have a python program which writes into a directory by making new directories or writes directly inside then newly made directory. I am the root user and the high level directory has 777 permissions. However, I am unable to write within the newly made directory because of permissions. How can give newly created directories permissions?
you could, but i think there's a room for that
It used to be called something much less creative and ambiguous, like the kill it with fire room or something. Not literally, but it was close. Maybe the "Ad hoc minimod room" or something.
@AppleSupport @Apple You can access it via System Preferences>Users & Groups>Click the lock to make changes. Then use "root" with no password. And try it for several times. Result is unbelievable!
Oh. Then yes.
we've all screwed with our sudoers file though
basically we allow passwordless sudo for our main users
easier on dev machines when we're just doing stuff in containers anyway (yes yes i know that's a bad security practice)
mine isn't set up for passwordless, it just is passwordless for my more common things
I haven't seen a CVE for it, but I would expect that it requires a default sudoers file.
