@aking1012 Yeah. Makes me want to finish my Ubuntu Book and start selling 12.04-12.10 copies with a update later on.
Dang...
@jrg Is there really going to be a need for ubuntu books for much longer? I mean if you could just organize all the tags on AU enough...
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 Well, you obviously haven't read my book. :P
The entire thing is almost a copy-paste-fix-tyop-add-screenshots of several Ask Ubuntu questions.
(and attribution. Can't forget that)
Anyone on a 12.04 box?
Great answer: Does Ubuntu generally post timely security updates? http://askubuntu.com/questions/119274/does-ubuntu-generally-post-timely-security-updates/119287?atw=1#119287 #security
00:06
@MarcoCeppi I can turn on my laptop
jrg
jrg
I can boot my laptop
@aking1012 is there some firewall or policy that would prevent you from connect to the box on the same network?
I can't ping, ssh, or get to any ports that are open and listening on a fresh 12.04 install
Stopped ufw already
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi Nope. I can tell you that right now.
want so see if anyone else is having this issue
I'm not
00:08
@MarcoCeppi: Just out of curiosity... would you ever use a VNC charm? For example - just now you've asked about testing something on 12.04. If we had a charm for something like TightVNC, then you could simply fire up an instance, and connect to it.
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison Requires desktop ubuntu, there aren't AMIs for that.
(iirc)
But couldn't the machine just apt-get install ubuntu-desktop?
I've successfully run TightVNC server on an Ubuntu Server install.
<--- doesn't know anything about EC2
/me doesn't either, but if there's a backtrack image - I'm confident at least a 2D desktop image should run
Yeah, I wouldn't expect 3D acceleration or anything.
jrg
jrg
Just run it on a GPU instance. its got like, a 1.6GHZ cpu and then a MONSTER GPU.
Boom, 3d. biggest throttle is your network speed. :)
00:12
Doesn't the GPU instance cost significantly more?
I know what would make a super charm then:
jrg
jrg
a lot more. Its roughly twice as expensive.
A Blender rendering setup.
2
I image the process would look something like this:
1. Make an awesome Blender movie.
2. Start rendering it.
jrg
jrg
Make it like jenkins or something and you've got a winner.
3. Realize your equipment is waaaay too underpowered.
4. Fire up a charm to render it.
5. Create a bunch of units to speed things up.
00:13
@GeorgeEdison @jrg Actually I started on one
@MarcoCeppi For Blender or VNC?
jrg
jrg
6. Renders, uploads to s3 and sends you an email with a link.
Aww... so much for a unique idea :P
I havne't gotten far, you're welcome to take it
There's a wiki page detailing the setup
00:19
Where can I grab the current elementary os beta?
jrg
jrg
No idea, i don't think they have a beta released right now
@jrg looks like a beta to me :)
grrr this is driving me nuts
OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BBBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF......................................................‌..........
jrg
jrg
thats why i back things up, and then push it up to a git repo on bitbucket or github. :P
00:25
ggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr...................
I am back.
@William How did it get erased?
I have no idea.
COmputer ran out of battery.
But I saved before that.
Then maybe you can still recover it.
How?
00:30
Time machine.
2
The code view is empty.
I think there are tools in the Software Center for recovering deleted files.
What? TELL ME NOW!
I don't know.
I've never had this problem.
I can't really offer any other advice.
Check your back ups.
ofcourse I know you don't have any of those.
I can't find any useful tools.
00:34
:(
Next time, consider source control
@jrg I've confirmed this on two 12.04 boxes now
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi Weird. Let me boot my laptop and try again.

@William - I use 2 tools to recover files all the time, the normal photorec which comes with testdisk and foremost. I use foremost only because it recovers some additional files that for the moment the version of photorec at least the version I am using in 11.10 does not recover. But in general both are good although photore is amazing.
@LuisAlvarado /me loves scalpel and foremost. I just didn't want to get drawn in to a how to use them discussion.
scalpel is also good
but since photorec is the one that is getting more and more work on it, eventually it will outweigh the others
right now scalpel can also recover files that neither foremost or photorec can
Hey room!
Are you guys familar with the Nugget Hero?
nope sorry
Is that like a hero that fight KFC nuggets
maybe mcdonalds ones
It is for the CBT Nuggets
they are having a give away of free training for an entire year and I am a finalist for the contests
02:26
but what is a nugget hero?

Hello all
04:13
I cannot upgrade my google-chrome install for some reason.
@jokerdino No ideas man...I stick with chromium
I get a 403 forbidden.
I use Firefox myself.
but if I can't download the google-chrome update, the entire upgrade process fails.
You seem to have lots of network related forbiddens. What's the URL that's failing and I'll see if it's everyone or just you
403 Forbidden [IP: 173.194.38.131 80]
The network is just too unstable. I keep failing to upgrade.

Ah, well that explains it
it was a great night tho

also i called my buddy Kevin the recruiter i passed your name off to. He did check it out and he's actively seeing whats available in the area that he can shoot your way
he said if theres anything that comes up he will contact you directly on linked in
Cool. I applied for a teaching job at a local community college today.
I thought that was earlier this week you were like, accepted for that
perhaps i misread
Nope. I was referred for it, but not accepted
ah i see. Tenative. They would be stupid to not hire you
you're amazing at IPSec and the depth of your knowledge.
i have respect for anyone that can run backtrack as their main distribution :P

05:12
@lazyPower I don't. I "fix" most of the packages to work on mainline. Been tossing about the idea of putting together a repo of packages from BT tweaked to not completely bork the mainline menu-system
Dropped an edit on this askubuntu.com/q/119223/6807
oh yeah, i recall you saying that
If a kernel update does all that something not kernel update happened...I don't see that one getting answered very well.
Still loading..
What port does ping work?
ping is icmp so it doesn't have a proper port iirc
i dont either but i tried to make the edit more "help me debug" which in turn could help newbs with update issues.
ICMP isn't port specific
ICMP (ping, trace)is a layer 3 protocol suite within the TCP/IP suite, doesnt test any layer 4 or above functions, therefore, it has no TCP/UDP layer 4 port number. The sub protocols within it do. You can block echo replies by closing port 7. That is how you get to be not pinged on the net.
that last bit was a bit of an extended paste
the first half of that quote is correct. closing port 7 does not block echo requests.
05:19
--- chat.stackexchange.com ping statistics ---
102 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 101807ms
I have a weird situation.
considering ICMP is built into the packet frame - its like a layer below on the OSI model.
can you ping anything else?
@jokerdino i cant ping chat.stackexchange.com either - i think it has ICMP blocked.
I can ping 1.1.1.1
i can ping chat.stack fine
try tcping on port 80 for the same and see if it doesn't fix
05:20
i lied - it just came back
--- chat.stackexchange.com ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 20714ms
With that high of a latency though, there may be a routing issue on my side.
--- google.com ping statistics ---
95 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 94649ms
@aking1012 I don't have tcping package installed.
I get
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 5284ms
tcping is a staple...as is tcptraceroute
time should be lower though
I hate this.
<-- is sorry your network connection is sketchy
If it's this slow here and you're on a high latency network you might try the -W option with a crazy high timeout
Looking.
05:30
example: ping -W 20 -c 2 chat.stack and come back after brewing coffee
wait, 20 is high enough?
20 seconds? it better be...
Success.

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 342.894/342.894/342.894/0.000 ms

I am very sure about it as well.

What i don't understand is if I can't ping it, how can I chat here?
my guess is somewhere icmp is throttled or dropped...which is why i suggested tcping
How do I try it? I can't seem to have it in my system.
05:41

@jokerdino - You've been coming back with this same issue over and over again. If you have high latency, things generally are going to fail. I don't know that saying "I can't download diagnostic tools" is the right response to "You need better diagnostic tools"
hmm say wha?
I am going to boot into Windows 7 now.
05:53
I've seen your ping fail complaint twice in a day. When people say try this other thing, your answer is I don't have/can't get that because my updates are broken due to latency. It sounds a lot like an intentional circular logic problem
If anyone present thinks I'm out of line please step up and tell me so. I'll just stop. I'm just saying what it looks like to me.
@aking1012 when i mean i don't have it, i was hoping someone would tell me how to install that package.
when i run tcping, it asks me to install lam-runtime (i think) and installing it doesn't allow me to use tcping.
that's tping
tcping is something you have to install from source
or use a package from backtrack
you should have told that earlier. -.-
I thought ubuntu would have it...that's my mistake
now that i am in Windows 7, I can't get them right now.
i'll try them later today.

@jokerdino Dang
Anyone wants to proxy post my meta question? I've been trying too hard.
@jokerdino \o
I believe that appropriately tagging questions that are actually answered are far more important than those that are waiting to be answered. I will list down some of the points on why I think so.

- It makes the questions and answers much more easily discoverable and that is never a bad thing.
- It makes it much easier to track the various duplicates.
 - We have quite a huge number of duplicates that are yet to be closed, which we aren't doing the site any good by leaving open. I guess no one disagrees on that.
