yes, i've deleted ~/.thumbnails as well. but the reason it doesn't work is because dump-gnash doesn't exist on ubuntu (probably because it's deprecated or something)

First, enable automatic updates like this:
sudo apt-get install unattended-upgrades
You then need to edit its configuration, type
sudo nano /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades
(replace nano with your preferred text editor if you want)
The file looks like this:
Unattended-Upgrade::A...
for your "sudo nano" thing
you can just tell users "sudoedit" and it will use whatever editor they prefer
