oh, new to linux.
great choice to try out ubuntu
Pretty much
I've used ubuntu off an on as a secondary OS for a while
So far I've manged to have some configure headaches and get confused by emacs
i could tell you are using ubuntu in a box
i never tried emacs. but i did get a lot of configuration problems
What is the difference between in a box and out?
I give it 4GB RAM and 4 processors at 1 core each
Do a good bit of programming on it
that's a pretty good power
i don't know. putting in a box means limited resources
In theory, but at the same time, I don't think it ever uses up what I give it
and I am not ready to switch full time
Probably will have to really learn the OS
07:05
hmm. you can try dual boot
True, that is the next step
i still dual boot
i always have some use case for windows
Is there a way to get the sidebar when I have a maximized window open?
launcher you mean?
hang on, let me dig out the question
59
Q: How can I configure Unity's launcher auto-hide behavior?

wilsonliamThis has been a major irk with Unity for me since it's release, and I was wondering if there were any plans to make the launcher auto-hide. Especially on Netbooks, where screens are small, the launcher is quite wide, making it difficult for some websites and other apps to display properly.

07:23
thanks, though I feel like I am asking all the really basic questions. Is there a way to reorder the items on the launcher?
drag it out right and reorder it
They don't seem to want to move
are you on unity-2d?
erm, not sure? the default
$DESKTOP_SESSION
07:26
ubuntu-2d: command not found
so 2d it is?
wait what?
ubuntu-2d: command not found is the result
in terminal
i guess it is. seems likely
Is there a place where I can read up on the differences?
one sec
07:28
k, thanks
37
A: Am I using Unity or Unity 2D?

Roland TaylorThe easiest way I have found is to look at the launcher: Unity 3D Unity 3D has several features that set it apart, that are the result of it's "3D" nature and the capabilities afforded to it that way: The launcher items fold when there are too many windows open or excess items pinned to the l...

or you want the technical differences?
for now, that is fine. So why is dragging the items off the launcher not working?
does it work that way?
for me when I click and hold, it just makes the launcher scroll
does not drag anything out
weird. let me log into unity-2d and check for myself. give me a sec
you are right. it doesn't work
07:34
If you reorder in 3D, and then go back to 2D the order will remain changed?
Or should I just go to 3D
yep they change
there is a manual way of changing the order..
I think I'll just try the 3D version
that is though compiz?
3d doesn't work in a box, IIRC
yep, 3d is compiz
Because it needs access to the graphics card?
yeah, hardware acceleration i think
07:37
so 2D it is..
What is the manual way?
using dconf-tools
not exactly manual but a workaround
install the tool - sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
getting it
go to Desktop > Unity > Launcher > favourites > reorder it as you wish
got it
or you could have removed everything and added the way you want. haha
oh wait, hang on.
unity-2d launcher works differently
click hold on the launcher item and drag it upwards
07:43
That just slides everything no?
or am I doing something else
go to the left most edge
hold it and drag it
There is a very very small area...
now does it work for you? it does here
I did it once, and can't seem to replicate it
hold on
Seems hit or miss
(did it a second time)
i can now hold the icon anywhere and drag it.
seems like a weird starting bug
07:46
ah got it
it is click, hold, then drag
oops sorry for not being precise. i was just excited that it worked
ok well, it works now?
ok nice
now trying to figure out why there are two dconf windows on the launcher that are represented by question marks and can't be removed
we are having a personal support for you XD
07:51
lol ill get it, but your help is very much appreciated
seems like it got locked to the laucher somehow, and removing it with the editor manually is not effective
Oli
Oli
Oh rofl. Just had a unicorn paperclip pop up and ask me if I need help.
right click and remove it
@Oli it is not april fool's joke, it is a new SE feature
@jokerdino, no context menu
sleep as a service will keep it on the launcher?
hmm that is weird.
i don't know what you are talking about.
question mark where the mouse is dconf
the other one is chromium (going to remove that probably)
07:56
log out and log back in.
(time to leave the room for some time)
@oli your turn :P
oh wait, you don't do unity
Context menu unlocked
@jokerdino, thanks for everyhing
@soandos and you removed your launcher item?
07:58
ok that is some good news.
(waiting for the next problem)
lol, I think thats it for now
its 4am where I am
4 pm here
done with my afternoon
nice, enjoy
have a nice sunday
you too
08:02
you know where to look for if you have problems with Ubuntu. :)

A: How can I tell Ubuntu to do nothing when I close my laptop lid?

binWyou can also go to system->preferences->power management near bottom of the window you will find a dropdown where you can select what your system does when lid is closed

it's a fine answer. Wrong, but fine.
I meant to flag the other.
@fossfreedom thanks for closing and deleting the answer...
... actually @BrunoPereira beat me to this one!
08:57
i am a little happy now that it is deleted
no worries ... its been more than 30 days so your rep count shouldnt have been affected.

he is reposting his comment to some other answer
09:15
it says it was a reply to the now accepted answer, which is another answer! O.o what's going on?
the now accepted answer was crap previously and badp posted that comment.
then the accepted answer got improved and he accepted it.
then another guy posts the crappy answer again and he comments like that.
comment deleted...
Dang.
it was very confusing... thanks

@fossfreedom http://askubuntu.com/questions/117848/asking-for-cache-data-failed

It tries write-protect then assumes write-enabled, asks for cache data (failed) so assumes cache it write-thru

A: What is Ubuntu for Eyewear?

jokerdino How is that [eyewear] supposed to work? The website states that you use the eyewear simply by wearing it: Once the glasses are on, the entire interface appears superimposed on the user's line of vision, with documents appearing semi-transparent, to avoid blocking the user's vision. ...

... and shall I delete this tomorrow or not ? ;)

I am off to dinner.

Twilight SparkleI suggest users be allowed to spend 2X of their own reputation in order to deal X damage to a target user's reputation. Ah, I see.
@jokerdino i am not having any luck in my rep :9
I see.
You should not answer for the sake of getting rep. That is bad.
Try to help the user. The rep will come, over time.
@jokerdino i know that is bit of greedy ;). thats why i keep answering
:)
u r right
a average time u spend on askubuntu

what? I don't know what you are saying.
13:07
@Gaurav_Java you are very active today
@jokerdino At first I did for getting reputation to talk in chat but it took more than one month to get 20 reputation :D
LOL. haha
Some people can rep easily because they have experience providing support.
but i am a beginner in ubuntu and least mark scorer in english :(
In my class *

Q: What has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel?

Luis AlvaradoThis question is similar to this one: What unique enhancements and features has Ubuntu brought to the Linux Community but in this case it is directed towards what has Ubuntu contributed to the official Linux Kernel. For example, many times I hear about Intel contributing to patches for the Linux...

That's not a real problem, is it?
No, just to see if anybody can help with the answer
if you really want a proper answer, you should be contacting the kernel team.
good night from me
16:16
@jokerdino good night
hi all - on the voice recognition for login question, the latest comment points to a blog article that says something about voice recognition being a logical next step for UI control. is there anyone "in the know" that could speculate which recognition subsystem this "could" be based on? e.g. julius versus sphinx cmu versus custom versus just helping get a big corpus for voxforge
@AmithKK I really hope that's an april fool's joke
@aking1012 really? Things with graphics and comic-sans and a April 1 header don't scream joke?
So I have a question for the room:
What's the current word on low-cpu-power netbooks and distros? Obviously most of the regulars in here are going to be more up to date on distros than random internet people, even if we're only talking deb derivs
Netbooks are small laptops, with screen sizes between approximately 7 and 12 inches and low power consumption. They use either an SSD (solid state disk) or a hard disk for storage, have up to 2 gigabytes of RAM (but often less), lack an optical disk drive, and usually have USB, Ethernet, WiFi and often Bluetooth connectivity. The name emphasises their use as portable Internet appliances. Netbook distributions There are special Linux distributions, called netbook distributions, for these machines. All such distributions are optimized for use with small, low-resolution displays. They tend to...
I was looking at this for guidance, and wanted input from regular Ubu users, as I've got 11.10 on there, but it's just too CPU intensive, I think. I keep locking.
If someone had a good guide on how to trim 11.10 down to basics, I would be in love (more so if I could keep Unity)
17:10
@jcolebrand Agreed, you can just never be too sure
@jcolebrand On the risk of being murdered for recommending it, have you tried 12.04 beta? Its so snappy and fast that I can run it in a vbox on a low spec laptop and be happy with it.
+ it brings a lot of kernel improvements power wise
@BrunoPereira ^-- It runs fine for me on a netbook when I disable 3d
how does one disable 3d specifically?
Its beta, release is schedule 26th but its stable enough
@jcolebrand just run Unity2d
well, part of my issue is I only have 4GB SSD in total, so that has to be split between swap et.
@BrunoPereira I recognize that as English, but it still is not comprehensible to me
how does one "just run Unity2d" and how do I know if I am already?
17:13
@jcolebrand Once the OS is installed and at the login screen you can choose 2 sessions, Unity (with 3d effects and compiz and all that non sense) and Unity2D (not 3d, no compiz)
a) I don't have a login screen
do I need to be on 12.04 to have Unity-2d?
No, its exists since 11.04
To know what you are running atm check this
34
Q: Am I using Unity or Unity 2D?

htorqueUnity and Unity 2D look very much alike in Ubuntu 11.10, so how can new users easily find out whether they are running Unity or Unity 2D?

11.10 definitely has both.
@jcolebrand how did you install 11.10?
@BrunoPereira from USB?
Apparently I am running 3d
so how does one switch it off? Only on the login screen? Can I permanently disable it and reboot?
@jcolebrand And once you boot it logs you in automatic? No login screen? Is that something you choose?
Aye, that's something I chose
17:17
15
Q: How do I change the default session for when using auto-logins?

giowckWhen autologon is active, lightdm will start the Unity 3D session, not the 2D (or any other shell that I want to auto-login to). Is there a way to start the shell I want automatically (autologon)? Anyway, if autologon is disabled, the last used session is launched, and that's fine. I just want ...

booting to check that out, I'll let you know
I changed it, rebooted, but it didn't seem to take ..
I still have flashing icons
hold on
PokéModâ„¢
I just though i'd bring it back.
no, I do
I'm confused, should the launcher flash when I load new apps?
with 2d
but things seem faster already
17:27
Can you not log off and go to the login screen? Once there chose Ubuntu2D from the session chooser
@BrunoPereira how do I know that I'm on 2d?
23
A: Am I using Unity or Unity 2D?

fossfreedomSubtlety in the design of the of the launcher popups - Unity 3D lives up to its name with a darker shadow "3D" effect whereas Unity 2D is lighter and has a "2D" flat effect. Unity 3D Unity 2D

this is what I would look for
if the background of the quicktips has some dots on the back and its not arrow(i) shaped but almost square then your using Unity 2D
@jcolebrand or in a terminal run echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
@BrunoPereira This is the easiest way in my opinion...
ubuntu
that is Unity3D
17:34
Aye, I was on the phone
2d shows unity-2d: command not found or similar
lemme double check the settings, I swear I changed it, but it may be set elsewhere. Verify part 1, then go further
Yes, I updated the /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and rebooted. Let me reboot then log off then back on
@jcolebrand This is what I would do: Go to System Settings > User Accounts, remove auto login, log off or reboot, at the login screen change the session from Ubuntu (Unity3D) to Ubuntu2D (Unity2D), login, make sure that its Unity2D running with the command above and activate auto login again in the User Accounts panel.
Aye, give me a moment
sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s ubuntu-2d seems to do the trick also.
sec, brb, testing this
17:42
just logging off, logging on, rebooting seems to have done the trick
after I edited that file as well
how can I tell what "services" or other background tasks are set to auto-boot now?
I used to know but that was like Ubuntu 9.04
This is almost an entirely new beast
Like I uninstalled all of CUPS because I'm not going to print, ever, from this (it's a friggin netbook)
Thanks guys
So do ya'll think I should consider a different distro or is this one likely to be good till I can get a larger SSD?
@jcolebrand np, looking for an easy way of checking those services
You could try a minimal install with another desktop environment
Xfce is one

Q: Xubuntu desktop minimal installation

Bruno PereiraFollowing this question I have have installed a minimal Ubuntu system on my computer. I want to install the minimum packages possible the cleanest xfce desktop possible. What are the minimal packages possible necessary to run a working minimal xubuntu desktop and how do I install them? Do I ne...

oooh, that could be sharp
I haven't used XFCE in years, but I bet it's pretty close
Dont ask us if you should try another distro, we will always recommend Ubuntu :P
you can do anything with it, start with a mini install, install packages as you go
desktop is a choice, not a rule
Openbox is pretty sleek imho, and uses around 30Mb extra after loading
with a mini installation + Openbox you can count with around 150Mb or RAM after boot and 600 to 800Mb of disk space used in total
You start with this and after install just select your desktop from the ones recommended in the Ubuntu wiki.
how i make all files executable in a folder using terminal( i am not the owner of that files ).
i tired doing sudo chmod a+x /folder *.*

i have folder hierarchy like this /home/user/documents/folder/executable files
any help
@BrunoPereira HOW? I can't seem to figure that out so well :p
@BrunoPereira thanks
I will consider that
17:53
@Gaurav_Java -R will apply them recursively, ie chmod -R 0755 directory
@jcolebrand Hey, its not Unity, but you dont need to use another distro, only a different flavor of what you have atm ;) gl, anything ask or join us in chat for answers.
@BrunoPereira aye
ok, I have work to do
ttyl
@BrunoPereira thanks for reply i have one doubt if i want to execute file then i have to go from that specific location i.e " cd home/user/documents/folder/executable files" or can directly run i.e "./home/user/documents/folder/executable files"
Maybe more verbose than you want:
Depends. A properly formed application can be run from anywhere. You would want to leave off that leading dot though. A lot of binaries expect to be either a)run from their local directory or b)run from a shell script that changes present working directory to their local directory first.
Your right on using the leading dot to use a relative url like ./documents/folder/executable if you were in home already

hi all
i've seen several people use "button" images in their Q&As. How do you get those?
you mean keyboard keys?
<kbd>Enter</kbd>, replace Enter with the key you want to display
When I want to find out something like that, I edit the post to see what they did then cancel the edit

/me would like a /me
yes, I'd do that, but just now I can't find a post with it :)
doesnt matter, you can ask anything anytime ;)
