Vague tag of the day:
At least the system doesn't allow more than one distinct tag of the same name.

Q: CORS NGINX configuration problem

Georgе StoyanovI have an Ubuntu web server with NGINX. I want to add CORS support for the following WebDAV methods: PUT, GET, OPTIONS, MKCOL, PROPFIND. I read couple of articles how to add the CORS support and I have put the following lines in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default: server { listen 80 defaul...

wow Google Home can do a ton
12:12
I admit I just can't understand the people who would willingly invite a device that silently records audio and sends it back to its servers into their home.
I wouldn't take one of those things if you paid me. Let alone pay for it.
Oh wow. Just looked at its page. Eeek! That's even worse than I thought: "Hey Google show photos of my Dad skiing" so you also get to give it details about your photos to help it identify the people an activities involved so they can then sell it all to ad firms and make more money trying to sell you crap.
I remember privacy. People used to like it.

@ByteCommander Possibly, but at the moment it is way unclear what you're asking.
It's not a question :)
@StefanoPalazzo The title is "How to repair corrupted jpeg?"
But it's totally unclear.
I've voted to close it as unclear.
I'll comment.
Commented.
Only the @ notations notifies a previous commenter who isn't also the post author, right?
Linking their names hasn't been added as another method, has it?
14:02
@EliahKagan they just did it manually
But I don't think you get an inbox notification if you don't put the @ in there, so it's no good.
@terdon where's your /rant?
@TheWanderer It will be over when they stop trying to push these insidious and pernicious little spies into people's homes.
tersaurus
14:18
@TheWanderer That a dinosaur with a brusque manner of speaking?
14:39
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
The new top bar is live :/
Tells @ThomasWard to launch an IGBM at the SE devs
@AndroidDev just happend ;)

Q: Vote: Do you like the new top bar design?

Android DevAfter discussing my previous question with some other users in chat, it was brought to my attention that SE is about to rollout a new top bar design to all the sites. However, I personally hate the new design, and I'm not alone. For example: what are they thinking?? do the designers actually ...

14:43
@AndroidDev its... happening.
We've complained about a lot of things (like the mystery meat navigation)
From the votes, it's quite obvious people here don't like it
A lot of it is fixed, a lot of it can't be
But but but
The new design is stupid
Yanno?
I've been through 3-4 top bar redesigns.
People... always say that
I would like labels tho
but I've heard two very good reasons it can't happen
(also, the mods have been using these a while)
Yeah. And it really has improved, to be fair.
14:47
^ this man used to hate the top bar. Now he merely dislikes it ;p
At least it has no pestilential GNOME hamburger buttons...
There's that ;)
Oh, it updated!
Just hit F5 and got hit by it...
A big Meh from my side.
well, the new top bar is live for all of you. Now you can all feel the pain we moderators have been inflicted with for so long.
Lots of people don't like it --^
14:57
yeah well SE did like 0 UX testing so big surprise.
So again I say:

A bit over the top?
yeah well...
he could at least scare them with his LAZOR
hmmm
Hello :)
maybe we could all go on strike like @KazWolfe did :D
(just kidding)
15:00
@Seth just saw it ... will have to get used to it :)
although Kaz went on strike for different reasons than a new top bar
he says he rage quit twice though
but more seriously, maybe now that we have a "material design" top bar we should consider asking them to get rid of the dotted background @terdon ?
I haz found bug with the top bar :D :D :D
@AndroidDev Try it.

Q: Bug with new top bar

Android DevOnce again, a picture is worth a thousand words:

Good catch!
looks like they screwed up the Z index
15:07
hah. Also cause AU is unique
also, I think there was a z index issue in mod-beta too
look at that @TheWanderer, did I tell you I am a bug finding machine or what? The new top bar hasn't been live for an hour and I'm already finding bugs :D
@AndroidDev great job "Mr. Bug Wizard" ! :D Hi Andy ! :) Everything fine (besides the new top bar) ?
@terdon should I post an answer on here linking to my meta post?
@cl-netbox yeah, although I've been quite busy lately, so no time to work on Chat Exchange :(
@AndroidDev I don't think so. Maybe leave a comment, but I'm sure they'll see your meta post anyway.
Yeah, they already have. Look at the edit
@AndroidDev same with me ... very busy (with something else) :)
Hi terdon ! :) Good afternoon to you ! :)
@terdon hahaha yup, I literally just saw it :D
Hi cl!
@AndroidDev says since half a minute, but still not live...
@ByteCommander "Fix for this is waiting in repo for next build so should be up in couple hours."
15:14
Just saw that...
i'm... confused?
why am i being pinged again
@ThomasWard donno. WHO PINGED YOY?
@ByteCommander Did you read this?
> Thanks for reporting! Fix for this is waiting in repo for next build so should be up in couple hours.
@ByteCommander because if you don't read the answers and comments you're likely to get smacked.
it's queued for the next build, ETA a couple hours for automated processing of that being deployed.

Such ping, much mod rage... wow.
such CHAOS
yawns
i probably need sleep :p
@ThomasWard Chaos is gone. A long time ago. When not quite CMs had pitchforks
Is there a good place to ask what happened to the daily builds of Ubuntu-gnome?
@CharlesGreen Here, probably. Sounds like it should be on topic on the main site.
15:37
rip. MS word just froze on me :(
and no I'm not running it in WINE
I'm on a Windows box atm
sigh
Put it into the microwave to thaw it.
darn it, it did it again!
I think I found a bug in Word!
Does anybody else have Word 2016 to try to repro?
On my work machine.
Well basically, it seems that if you delete everything inside of an inline equation box, and then press delete again, it freezes
Inline equation box?
I don't think I ever saw that, whatever it is...
15:44
Who uses word to write equations!? Major loss of geek points there!
@ByteCommander File --> Insert --> Equation
@terdon uhm, it's like 2 short equations in a very long document, so shrug
Never used that apparently
@AndroidDev Tsk. No LaTeX?
:(
If you remind me tomorrow when I'm using that other computer, I might check it. (Somewhere in between 15 and 22h from now)
Latex is like the x86 assembler of document writing, no?
15:47
@CharlesGreen ubuntu GNOME was "merged" with ubuntu ... ubuntu GNOME is obsolete because original ubuntu now has GNOME DE as default. :)
@cl-netbox seems like an answer to me :) (OP posted a Q)
@AndroidDev If you like. But only if writing in assembly is faster and easier and produces more beautiful results.
Granted, there's a learning curve, but once you know some LaTeX you never go back.
And these days there are some pretty good WYSIWYG editors for LaTeX so you don't really even need to know much.
@AndroidDev what do you think will happen when I write this as an answer ? downvotes in seconds ? :D
I would upgoat™
15:58
@cl-netbox If I download the daily build of ubuntu, and start it in a VM, I get the unity interface. I believe that the switch to bnome as the desktop is slated for 18.04?
@CharlesGreen no Charles - here is the link -> releases.ubuntu.com/17.10
@cl-netbox I'll try from that site - I've been downloading from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/
Of course, with my super-duper really high-speed DSL, it will take only a few minutes.... :)
@CharlesGreen Here you find a lot of information -> didrocks.fr maybe you thought it is unity because of ubuntu dock :D
@cl-netbox you know you can use markdown to hyperlink text, right?
Like this:
[Hello world](https://google.com)
@cl-netbox That may be - I'm very used to the Ubuntu-gnome interface, and haven't seen the Ubuntu dock in a long time.
16:07
@CharlesGreen it is a modification from the ubuntu desktop team ... so the daily buils are also new ubuntu. :) you can believe me, the answer is correct. :)
@cl-netbox I guess I'll have to determine how to minimize/turn off the dock! I've got a fairly low-rez screen, and I'm pretty jealous of any area being used.
@CharlesGreen sudo apt purge ubuntu-dock (or however the package will be called in the final version) ... then you have "pure" GNOME DE interface. :)
@AndroidDev thanks :)
16:22
@terdon latex ftw
Yeeeeehaaaa!
these "equation editors" people have no idea what they are missing ;)

Q: Attempting to connect to remote server with SFTP but receiving a needless passphrase promp

Robbie MilejczakI recently made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu for development and boy am I shocked at how difficult it has been to setup a connection to a remote server. @terdon Word :X I never touch that piece of crap ever in my life :+
@edwinksl ed ftw!
That takes me back <3
ed is a line editor for the Unix operating system. It was one of the first parts of the Unix operating system that was developed, in August 1969. It remains part of the POSIX and Open Group standards for Unix-based operating systems, alongside more sophisticated full-screen editors such as vi. == History and influence == The ed text editor was one of the first three key elements of the Unix operating system—assembler, editor, and shell—developed by Ken Thompson in August 1969 on a PDP-7 at AT&T Bell Labs. Many features of ed came from the qed text editor developed at Thompson's alma mater...

@Rinzwind Word is actually good software.
@Seth not for someone comming from Unix. Word adds far too much overhead to a file
@Rinzwind ah, sure. For simple things I can get behind that.
Well the old Word did
The new Word uses xml style.
yep
So formatting is outside the text
(or at least marked in the text and not with some weird MS-only tags)

Q: How do I review?

ZannaAs of today, the new top bar is live for normal users on Ask Ubuntu. Previously, I was reviewing quite a lot, but now we have this new top bar, and I can't see any "review" link in it... Can anyone help me find the review queues again so I can try to make Ask Ubuntu better? I'm posting this beca...

Hey @NathanOsman do you think it would be possible to do GPU passthrough on a dual graphics laptop?
18:22
So the new top bar really has been brought upon us… Does anybody know whether there's already somebody working on a userscript for a more practical alternative?
I don't, sorry :/
I'll let you know if I hear about anything though
Thank you! I think it would be widely used. ;P
18:48
eww the new review queue button is terrible
19:21
you are late to the party
schoool
excuses
rip. I got a crash report for my app but I have no idea why it crashed :(
it makes no sense that it would crash on line 133...
It was an NPE
but I don't see how that's possible
@TheWanderer activities get a savedInstanceState when you switch to another app, right?
19:37
my app apparently crashed in onCreate()
but I can't repro

@StefanoPalazzo sorry for late reply. Got Graphite/Grafana/Carbon etc... working. Trick was to not use a 5 year old server... Ubuntu 16.04 was super easy to install...
20:39
@blade19899 Hello! Long time no see!!!
I'm running off my 16GB USB stick running Lubuntu because my SSD died (and that's my boot drive)
Unfortunately, the USB stick never got updated to 64-bit 16.04 so I'm still running 32-bit 14.04...
But I'm running and have all my data available!!!
Try that with Windows! Hah!
I suppose my Windows 95 floppy disks are also still functioning, only that I didn't see a floppy drive in years…
20:59
>:-)
@dessert Try accessing your NTFS with Win95 floppies...
@Fabby Why bother? I would have overwritten the whole HDD during the 2-hour installation process where I had to change the floppy disk every 10 minutes. After that I'd be grateful not to have files to bother with any more. ;)
That's also a miracle… in it's own way.
@ParanoidPanda Yes, you're crazy, but no, you're not dangerous: you're funny!!! (but not everyone appreciates your dark humor)
(and that comes from someone who is bat-shit crazy bonkers, but who has learned to live with the that fact)
A few lesson in life:
1. Know that you think differently than other people
2. Stop worrying that you think differently than other people
3. the difference between "crazy" and "eccentric" is money: the former is poor, the latter is rich
Rebooting... BRB
