Q: copying a file from one linux disk to another via windows smb has pauses

DerekBit of an odd question, and very hard to search on. What I am doing is copying a file from a mech disk to an ssd on an ubuntu 16.04 system, via smb shares. The copy works, but it will run at about 80-90Mb/s for a while then drop to zero. It will soon pick up and start again. I would like to kno...

@DanielLoudon CyberPatriot?
@Fabby They've since graduated.
So we can migrate stuff there (you're not supposed to migrate to betas). Although in Software Recommendations's case we generally don't do many migrations simply because questions rarely meet their requirements for a decent question.

wtf is this bug
does anyone else know of a bug where a black roll appears from the top of the screen when fullscreening chrome?
looks like some graphics card issue - can't record it with a screen recorder

lol ;/
sorry for you
08:33
thanks, Seth. :)

@KazWolfe wtf, this looks creepy. Have you posted a question on the main site already?
Is there a way to use Markdown's [text](link) syntax support with a URL that contains an unmatched (?
like test
like [test](askubuntu.com/404\(nothing)
So it worked with \( ?
yep, seems so
Thanks.
10:47
or you could probably url-encode the (
( is %28
trying test
That works too, and the target URL is still shown with the bracket
11:00
@Seth They would also have to be off-topic here. Aside from cases where the OP is not using Ubuntu, are there software recommendation questions that we don't allow here but that would be allowed on Software Recommendations?

Great! - my upgrade from 17.04. to 17.10 . kind of succeeded. A bit awkward though:
1. Said `do-release-upgrade -d`
2. Was happy to hear that download would take 8 mins only.
3. Left it for a while having some coffee
4. Came back to the lock screen saying "Wrong Password"
5. Got that message on every single mouse click
6. Logged in to TTY to read "System restart required"
7. Loudly said `reboot`
8. Rebooted to an unresponsive splash screen with the red dots...
9. Had another coffee
10. Realized that all the TTY were gone.
11. Rebooted in rescue mode by using SysReq
12. Realized that it won't let me do networking because of missing .conf file.
<-- needs some sleep
<-- can't sleep because of too much coffee
This makes me feel pretty okay about still being on 16.04 LTS.
15:02
yeah... i also think that it is ok - it is only one of my boxes that has Ubuntu >16.04
I'm guessing (hoping) most people won't experience the woes you've experienced when they upgrade to 17.10.
o/ also 16.04 and happy with it
I do hope so too.
I took it as a sport championship
:)
So hopefully the answer to how a normal user should manage to do that is that they don't have to.
yeah - I don't even know where to report that as a bug.
15:05
Well it's multiple bugs, right?
The main bug may be my attempt to upgrade - source of all weirdness.
Did you ever figure out what the wrong password thing was about?
No - but that may be one source of folllowing errors. I never had a lock screen complaining about wrong passwords on mouse clicks. It did not let me type in my credentials
It probably should not have come in the first place (lock screens while release-upgrading are dumb)
But it may also be a crash earlier. Who knows.
15:23
Hello :)
@Takkat This is a perfect example for why users shouldn't upgrade their systems ... seems I'm not that wrong when recommending to perform clean installations ... :D Hi Takky :) Good afternoon to you ! :)
Good afternoon @Rinzwind ! :) Nice to see you Rinzy ! :)
@EliahKagan Right. Software recommendations are on-topic here too. Although that's had a lot of flux depending on who you ask..
Some people really hate them.
Hi @Seth :) How are you ? Some (health) improvements ?
15:38
@cl-netbox haha no. New issue cropped up, entirely separate.. had surgery.. still having it. Bleh..
It's been a long year.
@Seth sh*t ... I really wish you good luck that the doctors heal you completely ! :)
thanks!
You're welcome Seth :)
@Seth I can sing a song of that ... once I recommended qemu / KVM as a great virtualization solution and immediately received two downvotes ... :(
@cl-netbox lol yeah ... but actually since 8 years it is the first time for me a release-upgrade did not go smoothly.
And even then... I now have a system that is almost the same than before. All users and some manually installed software are preserved. Not too bad really.
@Takkat this is a "special one" ... switching from unity to GNOME ... nobody should even try to upgrade in this case (IMHO) ! :)
15:44
Unity is still a login option after the upgrade.
@Takkat are you running vanilla?
Only the greeter looks different (and is less easy to handle - who wants to swipe wiht the mouse?)
@Seth it was just upgraded from 17.04
@Takkat eww, yeah. Does spacebar work?
@Takkat hm. Does GNOME have a ubuntu theme now then?
Spacebar in the greeter?
There still is a lot of work that has to be done ... I think they will have sorted most problems out in 18.04 @Takkat ... :)
15:46
@Seth yeah sort of... no Dash :-(
@Takkat lockscreen, instead of swiping
@cl-netbox phew I do hope so.
@Seth ah! Never tied that.
+1 for space bar :)
@cl-netbox \o boxy i aint here :)
oh no! Rinzy is not here :(
@Takkat Once you use GNOME as it's meant to be used (rather with keyboard than with mouse), you'll start to like the new experience (I guess). :)
@Rinzwind Am I here ? hahaha :D :D :D
15:51
I hate to learn keyboard shortćuts - they change too often from here to there and from then to now.
headache so not using computer :P
@Rinzwind Best wishes that the headache disappears soon ! :)
@EliahKagan Hi Eliah :) Everything fine ? I hope so. :)
Yes, I am well. You?
@EliahKagan I am well too ! :) Today I tested something that is a huge convenience improvement -> kparal.wordpress.com/2017/10/06/… It works perfectly fine. :)
@Takkat eh, there are quite a few that are very standard.
16:01
@Seth correct :)
But they are not new to GNOME then.
I do miss a lot in the GNOME desktop. It disappeared or is only accessible after opening at least one additional menu. Only thing I like so far is that the shutdown countdown is back,
^this looks like 4 menu entries.
But it is fake. You have to click once more to get there.
Or more than one click for e.g. the sound settings.

Q: what to do with Tag only edits

raverySorry I could not find the post to link it here, but I will give the relevant info: The OP was asking about security on a shared WiFi connecton. He had it tagged as 16.04, firefox, and security. An edit came up that only changed the tag 16.04 to networking. No changes were made to the actual po...

@Seth Do you mean there were times when the consensus has not been that they are on-topic? The votes on the four meta questions I found show much more support for them to be on-topic than we have for some other established policies. Like, I don't think we've ever had nearly as much agreement on EoL policy.
18:05
@EliahKagan yeah that's what I mean. People love to try to close them.
That seems like it would mean that the minority of site users who think they should be off-topic care a lot about it, not that there has actually been a time when most people wanted them gone. But I also wonder if people vote to close them because they think they are off-topic, rather than out of a belief that they should be. A lot of false claims get made in comments about what our policies actually are.
That's definitely true.
Speaking personally, I do sympathize with the view that they should be off-topic, as there seems to be a bigger gray area than we usually have regarding what counts as too broad. But I also don't think prohibiting them is actually workable; even if we all wanted to ban them and tried, we'd run into difficulties. Most software rec questions can be reworded into "How do I do X?" questions that don't read like software rec requests but are asking exactly the same thing.
We could try to say that we allow questions about how to use tools but not what tools to use, but that's vague as it is, and it would probably convert the problem of figuring out if a question is allowed into the problem of answering it.

Q: Screen (slowly) goes black after full-screening Chrome

Kaz WolfeWhenever I full-screen Google Chrome or any chrome-based app (such as Discord), my entire screen will slowly begin to get covered by a black filter from the top down (see this video). During this time, my system acts normally besides the black cover. I can move my mouse normally, and events sti...

22:08
@KazWolfe have you tried disabling nVidia?
@Fabby hahahahaha no
not happening
try that first...
At least you know it's nVidia or smtg else...
id like to use nouveau but performance is sorta essential on this rig
just disable the card I mean
See wheter you have it on Intel drivers too.
i dont have an intel chip in this computer
the only gpu is my nvidia gpu
22:16
Don't uninstall the nVidia drivers.
ah...
mmmh.
Does it happen in your guest session too?
@KazWolfe ----^
not sure
probably
let me look
no, it does not.
Well, not a driver bug then...
Lemme post an answer...
22:38
@KazWolfe probably not what you want, but it's a workaround...
@Fabby Happy Canadian Thanksgiving
Huh?
Tomorrow is thanksgiving here in Canada.
already?
How's Germany?
22:44
Canada has Thanksgiving too???
I'in the Netherlands today....
@Seth American thanksgiving is in November cause fall comes later
:D
:D :D :D
Good one!
We got our first dusting of snow this morning at 8 am.
Fetching smth to drink. BREB
Beer for me as I plan my Windows takeover using WSL :p
Sorry @Seth I had to drop SilentCast in favour of Peek which is easier to use and generates smaller files.
22:48
@WinEunuuchs2Unix shrug. Do what's best for you.
Has anyone used x-windows within Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)? Just fishing for experiences
2
Nope...
But maybe a star will help
>:-)
:) I forgot all about stars during my hiatus
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I pretty much refuse to use Windows 10, so no.
22:51
@Seth Believe me I'm only getting the $2000 laptop (after upgrades) for gaming. Problem when running Windows is I like to pop into Ubuntu problem solving so with WSL I'd be able to do that without running VM.
The laptop comes with Windows 10. WSL works with Windows 10. 1+1=2
@WinEunuuchs2Unix running a VM will hardly impact your CPU though... as long as you have enough RAM you won't notice it at all
Ironically the new game I got used to cost $70 when released... I picked it up for $20 on sale.... Now it really costs $2000 to play at full speed and resolution :)
@Seth I just got upgraded to win10 at work because I had an office 2016 issue no one could resolve
@AndroidDev True that. Laptop comes with 8 GB only which isn't really enough for gaming even. I'll buy one 16 GB DDR4 SODIMM this year and another next year. Throw away the two 4GB = 8 GB.
/shrug
22:54
@Fabby another similar workaround: don't use fullscreen (i rarely do anyways)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix :D and another star!!!
Hey @KazWolfe I was reading one of your answers to use Xming 20 minutes ago... Have you heard of VcXsrv with WSL? It gets raving reviews from users.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I have not.
Mostly because I don't even have Windows anymore on any computer.
@KazWolfe :D Want me to add that one instead of a shrug in my answer?
eh, it's fine as is. we'll see if anyone actually knows what's going on
but if it's a config that gives me some hope
22:56
I'm actually typing this from my work computer...
(running Win10)
Working on a Sunday? or taking work laptop home?
Isn't it like midnight in the Netherlands????
I had to get up at 06:00 this morning because I had to work on a Sat-night in the republic of California...
I'm soooo confused!
Didn't have a single drop of C2H5OH all week-end...
Is that code for A.L.C.O.H.O.L?
22:58
@WinEunuuchs2Unix wanna try figuring out how my partitioning works?
06:30 AM in NL = 22:00 CA
Yup.
@KazWolfe I've always been partitioned challenged. I have like 15 of them on 3 laptop drives that are mostly empty.
i promise that will make you confused as hell
Remember: I was educated to be a chemist and make poison, blow shit up, ...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you have more data in your Partition Tabless than on your drives!
seriously. my partition tree gives even me a headache, and i made the damn thing
23:00
@Fabby I have empty partitions and near empty drives.
I have 2 partitions:
/home on the 1TB HDD
all the other shit on the SSD
you are like little baby
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
nvme1n1           259:0    0   477G  0 disk

128GB+240GB SSD & 500 GB HDD. I used Ubuntu all the time and it is only 30 GB partition on the 128 GB mSata SSD.
It's simple and works for me.
@KazWolfe Super cool... I actually ordered an NVMe for the new laptop in part because of what you posted in this chat room about 6 months ago.
23:02
@KazWolfe Can you post an answer for LVM here?
1
Q: How do I take a backup of my Master Boot Record (MBR) and Partition Table (PT)?

FabbyI'd like to know how to: take a backup do a restore of all the MBRs and all the PTs of all my disks to a file so I can easily back them up using rsync or a comparable program.

and yes. that is LVM spanning two physical drives, both PVs inside of an encrypted container.
Yup, got that...
double point of failure:
if one of the drives fails, you lose all
actually there are like five points of failure. i have backups.
and plans to replace these two 512s with a single tb drive
And although HDDs die slowly like cancer, SSDs die suddenly, like heart attacks.
in raid 1
23:04
ah
this config is not even in raid
it just uses/abuses LVM amazingly.
do you have any technical info how LVM handles its partition table?
(I mean: really technical, to know how to back up the PT.)
to back up an lvm partition table, you back up the entire lvm partition
???
where does it store its PT?
you're thinking about this the wrong way
23:07
all over the disk like NTFS?
lvm doesn't really have "partitions"
So how does this stuff work?
@KazWolfe having tried Intel RST accelerating HDD to SSD under Windows and Enhance IO doing the same drives with Linux partitions I'm now allergic to things like crypt and lvm which you have. I name partitions based on the OS or usage and not based on the manufacturer. ie Ubuntu1604, Ubuntu1704, Win10, Movies, etc.
reading
23:08
@Fabby I like to think of LVM like the DOS 6.0 Join command
@WinEunuuchs2Unix good one!starred!
@WinEunuuchs2Unix that is... very not true
Not it's very true.. It's just plain wrong :)
But it's funny!
Mounting is pretty much a join
23:09
ie true that I think that, wrong in what I think.
Also @Fabby this becomes way more complicated with GPT being involved
Very few modern systems now actually use MBR
Mounting in DOS terms is more like a drive letter assignment I think
Right. JOIN does sort of what a Linux mount does. Links a disk to a folder on the hard drive.
On that note, I love how you can do mount --bind / /mnt
Sounds like a marriage made in silicon
lvm is honestly an amazing tool when used properly
23:14
The problem is all the overhead and management time required for me.
and @Fabby, here's the best way I can describe this in a backup situation. When you back up the physical LVM partition, you back up all of the metadata as well automatically.
eh, once i set it up it's pretty hands-off
and there's a gui that helps with a lot of it
yeah, but Ijust want to back up the partition table...
I'm reading the docs though
why only the table
because in a virtual environment I've seen people take too many shortcuts...
I backup my mbr every day with the regular daily cron backups that email them to myself on gmail.com
23:17
the table without data is pretty useless in most cases. and if you're already backing up the data, the table is included
... and shut down VMs though the hyperviros...
... instead of through the OS...
and then you're in deepshit.
vgcfgbackup and restore is what i was looking for.
thanks...
(still going to read all the docs though...)
I need to know more about hat
23:20
> Metadata backups and archives are automatically created on every volume group and logical volume configuration change unless disabled in the lvm.conf file.
so, every time you update your LVM config, a new backup is written to /etc/lvm. Provided you back up this file, you will have a backup of your configs as well
I put my configs in a spreadsheet everytime I change them
yeah, but Idlike a replica of that backup on another system...
True that's a great idea too
this is the title of the document I'm having our Unix admins write:
Linux Architecture Change: Bad superblock mitigation
Here's a snippet from my spreadsheet:
                                  * * *  suspend  * * *
cat /lib/systemd/system-sleep/sound
cat /lib/systemd/system-sleep/r8169-reset
cat /lib/systemd/system-sleep/iwlwifi-reset
cat /lib/systemd/system-sleep/display-auto-brightness
cat /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
23:24
But so far,I've written 80% of the doc
So the spreadsheet runs the bash commands and puts the contents into the next columns
Excel macros?
Yup... super macros kind of because they run the shell command
>:-)
They are just like excel macros I learned decades ago but now they are LibreOffice which is infinitely cheaper
23:26
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Which language does LO use? 9for it macros, never had a need to write macros forpersonal use)
It's kind of like Visual Basic but they are also big on Python.
Urgh!
I definitely hat Positional languages...
Haha I grew up on RPG which is a positional language
Never touched any after having to have to reprogram something in COBOL for a UK Bank...
It was a 2-month gig and paid for the next 6 months of holiday when i was a kid, but never again!
COBOL was always RPG's competitor on the IBM Mini-Computers I used back then
23:28
How old are you?
half a century...
>:-)
Well at least I can say I was an adult when the IBM PC came out but you were still a kid :p
I though you were a teenager because of your silly handle...
Hah!
You should think that because of the Alienware AW17R3 with flashing LED lights I just ordered
23:30
I etched my first motherboard with a wax pen!!!!
1-2
I'm going to buy me one of those too...
I was tracing lines on PCBs when I was 12 or so but gave that up
> Alienware
My current Siemens machine refuses to die though...
It was on sale from $2000 to $1400 Cdn, I couldn't resist :D
2-2
15% off?
24h sale?
I missed that as I was on vacation...
23:31
though i shouldn't talk. i'm sitting here on a Blade Pro rn
No it's still on sale. I think it's more like 33% or 40% off though.
:O
ohhh... the blade that's like 4 grand
In Canada only?
Yeah. I am not happy.
23:32
I work for effing Dell and I know nothing...
I ordered the 960 Pro on sale too for 25% off.
Not only in Canada, the same model is on sale on Amazon from $1500 to $1150 USD.
Alienware on amazon????
The whole world is on amazon... I just ordered my USB-C Thunderbolt3 to HDMI adapter form them
I get internal Dell promotions sent like every 3 daysand I never get those kinds of deals!
yeah, cables, but Alienware too?
razer is on amazon so.
23:34
If I install 17.10 now, will it be any different from release version install after Oct 19 (final release date)? Which iso is better to choose now for this installation: final beta from Sept 28 or daily image?
I'll find the same Alienware model I ordered from London Drugs here that you can get on Amazon, hang on
@Shevchuk Install 16.04 LTS
4 or 6 years of support or so...
Oh they raised the price on amazon it's only 15% off now: amazon.com/…
@WinEunuuchs2Unix :O
@Shevchuk If you're absolutely going to go with 17.10, wait for it to come out to fix any standing bugs.
I'd really advise you go with 16.04 unless you have a good reason to jump off of LTS though
23:36
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah, it was a 24h sale internally.
but good to know it's on there.
I have a friend who's really into amazon.
Haha you should see how you can have iTunes control all the flashing keyboard and led light strips to visualize music :p
I'll ask him to have a look-out...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix You can do that.
I think my keyboard in the office has an "EQ" mode
@KazWolfe in the office?
Where do you work???
I'm moving!
yes. in the office
how do you feel about writing apps to help telemarketers call you at every hour of the day?
23:40
I'd shoot everyone on the first day on the job???
>:-)
Since I never answer the phone unless it's someone I know I don't care :)
I always answer the phone but if it's an unknown number, I pick up speaking Russian.
and then tell them I'll talk to my friends if they call me again...
Except when they're Indians trying to sell Microsoft support.
The only russian word I know is spasibo so I couldn't do that
that's fun to keep them busy pretending I'm an old fart whose machine is maintained by his granddaughter.
Meh, I'm a good parrot:
Android is one big Monty Hall Problem except no matter what you pick your phone is still abandoned.
23:44
I can ask for cigarettes, wine and beer in 10 languages...
this is so disgustingly true now that Cyanogenmod and Nexus are gone.
@KazWolfe @Fabby Thanks, but still the question is if there will be a difference between 17.10 installed now and installed after release (apart from my settings and maybe consequences of some bugs)?
I just bought a Nexus-rebranded phone...
yes: unsupported now and supported in 10 days.
@Shevchuk just wait!
@Fabby "nexus rebranded"? Do you mean Pixel? 'cause they're not the same thing.
as standard build as they get:
23:46
@Fabby Why?
grey import from Turkey.
I have 16.04
wait. what the hell.
4 years of support.
ok this is really weird
rock solid
23:47
16.04 is rock solid, but not for the first few months
True...
it is now...
i think i may have just found the bug. hang on, testing.
I had to join Ask Ubuntu just to fix 16.04 :p
@Shevchuk install 16.04
never install any OS until .1 comes out.
@Fabby That's ok for you maybe, but I didn't ask for 4 years of support or rock solidness :) I asked if there will be difference between installations now and after release.
23:48
@Shevchuk INSTALL 16.04
Windows, Ubuntu, Redhat, ...
In a couple of years install 18.04 after they figure out gnome DE
Yeah, I'm thinking of decamping to U&L and install Arch next.
I really like Unity...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Why? :) Btw, I don't use gnome, so I don't care if it's broken now, so the question still stands
well, that bug is not just chrome.
23:50
I really don't like gnome.
@KazWolfe it's your profile...
@Shevchuk There will most likely be, at least for some very last-second bugs that may have come up
@Fabby I can now repro this in other apps.
I think canonical will make gnome nice eventually.... unless they are devoting their time on a WSL DE.
Which is new. Clearing nvidia configs didn't help so... just start deleting things
Just re-create your profile and forget about it...
23:51
:D
I want to know what I did to trigger this.
that would be a 15-minute job...
Sweeping the problem under the rug solves nothing when I can potentially recreate this problem in 10 seconds.
anyway: good night!!!!
Ah,well!
that was quick! Good night
23:52
@KazWolfe THEN you start looking!!!
or i just start looking now
not if you'll never encounter the problem again!
anyway!
GOOD NIGHT!!!
01:53!!!
:zzz:
@KazWolfe thanks, first reply actually concerning my question, yay :) ok, so that would be some unintentional differences due to bugs (and probably pretty minor by now, given there are only 10 days left before release, but I will check before installation ofc), not like "if you install beta/daily, you will get some different updates / settings intentionally"?
i'm honestly not sure differences with betas and whatnot.
You may be put on a different release branch, but you should be able to disable most (if not all) of those things.
as for settings, i can see logging being cranked up to 11, but I have no proof that that actually is the case, sorry.
ok, thanks
23:59
Personally I avoid beta until a year after real version is released... which is why I'm finally looking at WSL... but I understand the excitement of bleeding edge... just don't want to bleed anymore I guess
