Hi, anyone here that are good at creating .desktop files?
I, uh, have created some .desktop files.
@ChristofferBerglund What are you looking to do or solve? Someone may be able to help you even if I cannot.
@EliahKagan I have created some .desktop files and the are working well. The only thing that is bugging me is when i open that application it makes a new icon on the application bar. But the standard icons for firefox and files are not doing that. Any idea what i could be missing in my .desktop file?
@ChristofferBerglund Is this with Unity?
@EliahKagan I had that problem with Unity, but atm. im using Ubuntu 17.10 Final Beta with Gnome, and the problem is still there.
10:30
I was thinking Why does my custom launcher open under a separate icon? might help. But I'm not sure.
@ChristofferBerglund Does this happen with all .desktop files you make, or just some?
@EliahKagan I will read the article you linked, it might help. And yes, i have made 4 new .desktop files, and they all do that. I have not tryed to just make a new one for firefox thought and check if it is doing the same.
10:57
@EliahKagan The link describes my problem! So now im searching for that second .desktop file that does the same as the one I have made. It's abit wierd though, because there where no shortcut for this program in my application drawer (or whatever it's called) before i made the shortcut.
Yeah, I don't think I know what is causing this. If you examine an existing .desktop file, are there any differences between it and the ones you're creating, does anything jump out as being similar across your own .desktop files but different from the other ones?
@EliahKagan I will try to compare them again, and thanks anyways for helping me troubleshooting this problem!
I think I've found my favorite question this year.
@ChristofferBerglund Assuming that question and others don't enable you to solve it, you may want t post a question on the site. Way more people are active on the site than here in chat. If you do end up posting a question, please feel free to ping me in chat with a link to it.
@EliahKagan Do we havvvve to put it on hold? We have to help him before he goes home to BIll D:
Honestly, I haven't seen this much character and emotion in an AU post in a while it's so refreshing

It occurs to me that, the way your comment reads, it seems to be saying 17.04 is actually a beta or something -- which is not the case. I'm skeptical of the idea of recommending people reinstall before they've even given the details on their problem(s), but maybe you could include a link to something that explains what you mean? You don't have to do this. I can reply to the comment or something. But since we're chatting here anyway...
Like, if they know what you're talking about when you say "Long Term Support" then you're not telling them anything they don't know, and if they don't know what that means then you're not telling them anything at all.
Oh yeah well a lot of programs like Skype aren't really supporting full porting to 17.04, they just implemented old code into new versions, and also Ubuntu is more supportive an operating system when code is built for that version
Gtg rn, but we can continue to talk later
Oh wow. People are still using skype in this day and age!?
Why?
There are so many cool platform-independent, web based and easy to use video conference/chat systems around these days, it seems silly to use something as clunky and ugly as skype.
Especially since its quality was never very good (well it was before MS bought it but that was years ago)
11:28
Because they need to talk to other people who use it. There may be other reasons, but that is the only reason I have used Skype in recent times.
I just send them a hangouts link these days.
Or use WhatsApp/Viber etc
Granted, the latter do need an account though.
Ah, so does the former, I guess. A google one.
Skype users are willing to run proprietary software (at least in the case of Skype) so Discord is also an option. I rarely run into gamers using Skype while gaming anymore (or actually at all, except to communicate with people who only use Skype) since Discord came on the scene.
A friend of mine and I used to use Skype while playing CS:GO. Now we use Discord.
I haven't used skype on a non-Linux platform in more than a decade, so I may be biased, but it always gave me more trouble than anything else.
The most trouble I have ever had with Skype is on a Windows machine, where it sometimes takes minutes to start a call. It worked better for me on Ubuntu. It works well for me on Android, though I infrequently use it now.

Q: Fingerprint reader on Asus Zenbook

Spectre216So I have ZorinOS installed on my ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54, however, FingerprintGUI shows my fingerprint sensor (Elantech I think) as an unknown device. Is there any custom software or fixes that can be used to get my laptop to pickup the fingerprint sensor?

14:11
Hello :)
14:22
:40375848 I think this (my) setup makes a reinstall quite convenient ->

[cl@cl-fw-1 ~]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
devtmpfs 7,8G 0 7,8G 0% /dev
tmpfs 7,8G 94M 7,7G 2% /dev/shm
tmpfs 7,8G 2,1M 7,8G 1% /run
tmpfs 7,8G 0 7,8G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/sdb3 40G 7,4G 30G 20% /
tmpfs 7,8G 100K 7,8G 1% /tmp
/dev/sdb1 4,0G 9,5M 4,0G 1% /boot/efi
tmpfs 1,6G 20K 1,6G 1% /run/user/42
Why do you have all those things mounted under /run? That seems like a strange choice.
Isn't that a ramdisk?
14:39
@terdon This is default when you open separate partitions in nautilus on redhat based systems ... such like in ubuntu they get mounted on /media. :)
@terdon no :)
Ah right, OK. So it mounts everything through gvfs or something, I guess. Well, I still like my /home to be its own partition, but that's me.
@terdon Both ways are okay of course ! :)
15:32
After much testing, I am pleased to announce that today, my brain has entered private beta.

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L I just migrated that here. Don't we have a tag for that weird Linux susbsystem on Windows thing?
16:28
@terdon What about "blacklisting" that subsystem as off-topic ... I agree : weird thing ... in the end it is a Microsoft problem - right ? :)
That's what I thought, but we've decided it's on topic.
And it is an Canonical product.

Q: Do we consider "Ubuntu on Windows 10" the same as an official Ubuntu flavour? Do we support it? To what extent?

kosAs many will have heard of, Microsoft will distribute a stock Ubuntu installation to be run on Windows 10. Source. Someone has made the point that being this the result of a partnership with Canonical, questions about it should be supported. Per the Help Center: Questions that you may ask: ...

@terdon I have no clue whoever needs this thing and what would be the benefit over using a native Linux system at all ... but okay ... :)

@terdon
Maybe we should consider a better name.
I'd suggest windows-subsystem-for-linux. Verbose, but much clearer. Or ubuntu-on-windows?

@terdon Hi, it was you trying to help me earlier today about some shotcuts with .desktop ?
18:50
@EliahKagan Hi! You was trying to help me with the .desktop shortcut error earlier today. Finally after many hours of troubleshooting i figured it out!
Cool! What was the solution?
I had to set the StartupWMClass to the same string that the "extra" icon had that popped up
@EliahKagan specifications.freedesktop.org/startup-notification-spec/… here is the documentation for StartupWMClass if you are special interested ;)
@EliahKagan And the programs i was having touble with was jetbrain programs, which are using java, and after reading a lot it seams like java programs can be a bit tricky when it comes to shortcuts and so on.

zzzzzzBOOMzzzzzzzzz
@cl-netbox If you want to make it offtopic bring it up on Meta
because it seems the consensus was to keep it on topic
but forward problems that we can't solve to the "File a bug report" reason
because there are issues with WSL that we just can't solve because it's how it works with M$ stuff that's broken.
well
i am ALMOST at the point of permanently switching to Android
and of course Samsung had a nice witty reply to my tweet about it.
