Q: Trying to back up windows computer to a Linux computer on the same wireless network

AnthonyI have a computer running Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. I just got a new computer running Windows 10. I would like to be able to access the file system on my Linux machine from my Windows machine to back up files but I don't know where to begin. They're both on the same wireless network.

@NathanOsman Have you listened to C:\Windows\Media\onestop.mid on Windows 7? It's super funny because it plays like 10 seconds of horror music, then classical music, etc. you get the point :D
it's also interesting how good they sound for only 10KB/minute
MID files are pretty neat :)
@AndroidDev Interesting. I'll have to try that.
I have Win7 on one of my machines.
@NathanOsman It doesn't play properly in Audacity for example, so I would play it in Windows Media Player
@Avery holy cow.... how long did it take them to make that???
00:47
I don't think Audacity can play MIDI files.
It's a waveform editor.
@AndroidDev black midi is an amazing thing that takes a ton of time
that channel makes a ton of them
@Avery nuuuuuu he must play the original >_>
@NathanOsman well it can actually, but it turns it into only the piano and so it sounds horrible
Oh?
I didn't know that.
@NathanOsman File > Import > MIDI
00:50
How did I not see that...
@Avery that sounds different than playing it natively (particularly the string instruments)
@NathanOsman "Current releases of Audacity are now slowly adding support for MIDI. As of October 2008, MIDI files can be imported, cut-and-paste edited, then exported as MIDI. However this feature is still buggy, and there is no MIDI playback. Conversion from MIDI to audio formats, and from audio formats to MIDI is not supported."
oh dear @TheWanderer.... my simple little app is getting Chat Exchange quality dirty hacks! sigh
why didn't that ping me
it didn't?

Do I really want to work for a place using PHP and SVN?

@NathanOsman "experience" does not mean you need to use it. Your experience might be that you came to the conclusion it is better to avoid them.
why php if they list javascript and jquery :-P

Q: Linux does not recognize Fake-RAID 0

rqnnI am trying to set up Linux (preferably Linux Mint) with Dual Boot alongside my Windows 10 installation. Now the problem is, I'm using a Fake-RAID 0 setup, because I really dislike having partitions. I'm using an Asus X370 Pro Mainboard and an AMD Ryzen 1800X CPU. I've searched across the inter...

@terdon what and javascript isn't? >:-D
wanna bet?

Oli
@NathanOsman If it's a small company, or a senior-ish role, you might be able to drag them up to date.
@Rinzwind No, I mean php is server side while JS is client side, so I was wondering what you meant when you said there's no need for php if you have JS
Oli
Oli
I think he's suggesting that JS can be run server-side too (eg node). If he's not, I will.
13:52
@Oli Oh. It can? And is it worth it? I mean, can it really replace boina fide server-side languages like python or perl or even php (shudder)?
@terdon I code server side JS :-P
@terdon we also use python to code js :=D
and I would prefer anthing over php. even a career change :-X
@Rinzwind Fair enough. I thought JS was client-side by definition. Which makes no sense at all now that I think about it.
@terdon node.js? ;p
14:07
@JourneymanGeek That's some sort of microsoft thing, right?
As I usually do when confronted with my ignorance, I will remind you that I'm a biologist not a programmer. It just happens to say "programmer" on my job description at the moment :P
basically node.js is a serverside javascript framework
there's a few neat things written in it, but yeah, you can totally write serverside stuff in JS
node's also famous for forking every few years, then merging back

Windows 7 will be my Windows OS of choice until 2020.
Honestly, If security patches weren't an issue, I'd take a fully up-to-date Vista over Windows 10!
Windows 10 deserves to be burned with fire and cast into /dev/null
IIRC you don't get updates for windows 7 unless you pay for extended support though
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 is quite good tbh.
Not as good as arch ofc
@jrg uhm - now autoscroll is broken in Slack - at least on first page load.

@EliahKagan Their username appears intended to advertise a business in Madrid, which is by itself obviously not spam or in any way objectionable, but the domain name included for no apparent reason in the body refers to Móstoles. It's a domain name, not an email address or anything, so I think it's an attempt to put unsolicited advertising on the site. URL spam is usually linkified but perhaps the intent here was to avoid a suspicious hyperlink.

There goes that theory.

anyone knows ubuntu here ?
I can't use globally installed packages from npm. Any idea why ?
Just to confirm, you are using the -g flag with npm install, correct?
Ced
Ced
yeah
I think it's an owner ship issue, or something with the npm manager I installed a while back
The weird thing is that some global package work
That's odd. npm should be symlink-ing commands in /usr/bin which would be in your $PATH.

and I can't use it. same for a dozen of others I tried today
Can you confirm the directories exist in /usr/lib/node_modules?
Ced

I don't have that dir
Hmm...
I'm using Arch. I mistakenly assumed Ubuntu would have used the same directory.
Ced
Ced
when running npm list -g
I have as first line /home/ced/.nvm/versions/node/v8.0.0/lib/node_modules/node/lib
(I used nvm to install node)
meh I'm gonna try a fresh install

@NathanOsman I haz found another bug in Nitroshare (no it's not permission related)
If I fix it will you accept my PR :P
What is the bug?
1) Enable dark theme
2) Click "send with Nitroshare"
3) Rotate to landscape
20:59
You'll immediately see the issue
Confirmed.
Yes, that is most definitely a bug.
Must be an issue with the fragment lifecycle... I guess?
Actually...
Oh, okay.
21:00
No
That can't be it
Nvm
@NathanOsman It can't be that because the fragment is completely recreated on rotation, not just paused and resumed, right?
I think it depends.
Sometimes it will preserve the fragment.
But I don't think it is guaranteed in all cases.
Ooh cool, my first chat flag :D

I installed node 8.0.0 then followed this answer to make it work stackoverflow.com/questions/21168141/…
but now when typing node -v it says v4.7.2
21:23
@NathanOsman I hath fixed it. You just have to merge my PR now :P
The first thing I tried did the trick :D
21:57
@AndroidDev ...and merged!
I'll try to get it pushed out later today or tomorrow.
@NathanOsman yay :D so I guess you can close this then: github.com/nitroshare/nitroshare-android/issues/34

Q: Having a new window show up on the proper monitor
