@Takkat I don't think the Ubuntu version is relevant. There's no such package in the repos.
Ah. Unless it's just libvtk.
@trilolil does it work if you run sudo apt install libvtk and then try again?

Q: AWS EC2 instance says apache2 isn't running but the server is still up and httpd is listening on port 80?

TheRedshiftSo I'm trying to use certbot to get a LetsEncrypt certificate for my wordpress site on EC2 (using the AWS marketplace image by Bitnami, Ubuntu 14.04), but when running certbot --apache I get the following - Error while running apache2ctl graceful. httpd not running, trying to start Action 'grac...

@terdon sudo apt install libvtk5.10 results in:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libvtk5.10 is already the newest version (5.10.1+dfsg-2.1build1).
libvtk5.10 set to manually installed.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  gimp-data gimp-help-common gimp-help-en libamd2.4.1 libbabl-0.1-0 libbtf1.2.1 libcamd2.4.1 libccolamd2.9.1 libcsparse3.1.4 libcxsparse3.1.4
  libgimp2.0 libklu1.3.3 libldl2.2.1 linux-headers-4.8.0-36 linux-headers-4.8.0-36-generic linux-image-4.8.0-36-generic
OK. That's what the bug fixes, I see.
Make sure to include these commands and their output in your question.
@terdon ok done
@terdon would you mind explaining what exactly you see? That way I learn new stuff as well
@terdon how do you know that? because sudo apt-cache pkgnames "libvtk" returns an empty list?
10:12
@trilolil I searched in packages.ubuntu.com
@trilolil I see that while there's no package containing a file whose name matches vtkjproj, there is one called libvtk which is missing. And the bug was saying it was "fixed" so, presumably, they've added it back.
@terdon The bug says it is provided by libpcl1.7 (can't test this here atm in my all Windows office)
They even took away my spare Windows box where I had installed Ubuntu in a VM. :"(
thanks to whoever pvoted my question :)
@Takkat Well, there is a libvtk package: packages.ubuntu.com/…
But there's no "proj" in it.
@terdon should I try sudo apt install libvtk6.3 ?
10:28
@terdon they way I understand the bug report this exactly is the bug. It should provide the proj file but it doesn't. But apparently vtk6 doesn't provide it in 17.04 either... weird.
@Takkat Yeah
hi , i have some problem on installing mongodb , i ask my question here , i follow the instruction but i get error
11:13
@trilolil interesting you say that. I have two machines, working on the same directory. Search from Windows 10 was broken from the moment I bought it the machine. Quite some solutions suggested on the web, none of them work longer than 15 seconds. I have to sit behind my Ubuntu machine or use my own script I made to find stuff. Imagine... SEARCH!
But indeed, use whatever you like.

1 hour later…
12:18
@terdon 11 views so far, I m affraid my question isn't that popular :/
@Takkat ^
not many people may know a solution or only few came across that at all.
@trilolil 11 views in 2 hours? What were you expecting? And that's certainly better than the 2 people who saw your question here :)
hahah :)
let's wait...

2 hours later…

@Takkat will I lose all my data on my laptop if I upgrade to ubuntu 17.04 as decribed here: omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/04/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-17-04
?
@terdon ^
That way I "solve" my problem
@trilolil Install 17.04 in a virtual machine if it was only for testing or compiling. But no, you will only lose data in your HOME if you chose an option that said so...

Q: Should we not downvote if a question already has a bad score?

Android DevAlright, so I know this is going to be controversial, but here goes: I was perusing the home page and saw this question: Now, obviously that is a bad question and certainly does deserve a negative score. I was about to downvote, but I'm torn. On one hand, I want to downvote because it's a...

Ohai.
Does anyone know if it is possible to launch a process under the Local System account through a command prompt on Windows?
Anyone?

@AndroidDev just letting you know I haven't forgotten about your pull request.
I have been busy trying to fix some rather serious issues with the upcoming version of the desktop client.
do you know of anything that would let me have a fancy link to a specified GitHub repo?
like how Google has the Get it on Google Play thing
15:59
@TheWanderer What would be fancy about it?
@TheWanderer Font Awesome has the GitHub logo.
they're paid
oh
No, not Font Awesome's base set.
how do I resize?
nvm
16:11
@Takkat to be sure, does that include everthing on my desktop etc?

Q: Ubuntu terminal takes time to load?

KasunPrabathI'm using Ubuntu 16.04 . Earlier terminal was opened and load pretty quickly. But now window opened but it takes about 15 seconds to load. What is the reason for that and how to reduce the loading time?.

"gnome-control-center keyboard" shortcut changing app doesn't seem to recognize scroll-lock by default. i had to manually set my shortcut to Scroll_Lock in deconf org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys .. bug?
@user2476549 Please post questions on the main site. That way, other people can also benefit and more people will read it, so you have more chances of getting help.
16:49
@terdon is it considered bad etiquette to ask and answer your own question?
@user2476549 Not at all. It is considered good etiquette, since you are nice enough to share your knowledge.

Q: What is this "answer your own question" jazz?

Shog9I showed up here to write a perfectly normal rant about misaligned pixels, and there's a big fat checkbox cluttering up the "Ask" page: WHAT THE EEEEK IS THIS NEW ABOMINATION?

oh cool, I haven't seen that checkbox. Thanks

FINALLY. YESSSSSS

REJOICE - FOR THE FLASH PLAYER FINALLY DIES!
@ThomasWard will be beside himself with unexpected joy at the news.
17:09
@Seth Oh wow. I can hardly believe it. YEEEEEeeeessssssssssssssss!
No, wait. 2020!?
Sigh
Unfortunately I'm sure the decision to add DRM to the HTML5 spec had something to do with it.
@terdon just 3 years out
didn't they already do that before?
@Seth As did Job's decision to not support flash on the iPhone. That more than anything else, probably. Here's something even the most die hard Apple haters here should be able to appreciate.
@Seth 2020.... why not in 2017 :(
DisplayLink works on macOS.
Now I have three monitors. \o/
17:22
Woot Woot! =)
@NathanOsman why not be bleeding edge and go for 4 :=)
I only have three.
Actually, that's not true!
I have another 7" with HDMI input.
The problem is... I don't think I have any more HDMI outputs on my video card.
solder one :=)
@NathanOsman What Mac is it that your are attaching those monitors to?
17:35
@Terrance one he paid 40% too much for >:=D
@Rinzwind LOL! =D
@Terrance Late 2015 Mac Mini IIRC.
@NathanOsman Ah, OK. I was thinking if it was a MacBook like the one I have sitting on my desk here at work that is powered off at the moment, ;) ;), it has 2 lightning ports on the left and one HDMI on the right. With the screen open that makes 4. =)
I've got Synergy working with three PCs now.
Linux, Windows, and macOS.
One of each.
\o/
Welcome to the Synergy Club! =)
17:40
synergy <3
Synergy is awesome!
I funded it by buying 5 licenses I only ever used 1 at most :=D
I did find that if I run Synergy in the server mode on my Ubuntu, then client on my Windows and Mac I have less problems. =)
Oh, and I don't use the "Synchronize Screensavers" between them because if I log in remotely once my VPN kicks in, so does my screensaver if I forget to turn off Synergy on my local system.
It's not the largest display...
But it works :P
You could play a small game on it. ;)
17:52
The v4 beta driver does Metal apparently.
So I guess gaming is a possibility.
That requires High Sierra though.
Which I do not have installed.
Chrome has rendering glitches but Safari works alright.
That's cool. :)
Is Spacedesk any good?
Never tried it.
Does it require root?
It doesn't say
Might be worth a shot if not.
I don't have root on my phone due to Android Pay.
Same, but I use the Samsung pay with the MST
18:00
How do you like Samsung Pay?
I hear it's a bit easier to choose the card to use during payment.
I earn points with it that I can use for drawings and stuff. It is easier for picking the card. Plus, Magnetic Secure Transaction almost works everywhere. Sometimes at WallyWorld (Walmart) it is hit and miss, but for the most part it is good. It also support NFC (Tap and Pay) without using Android Pay.
I tried to use mine at Walmart the other day but the reader didn't support tapping.
The MST you hold right above the Magstripe reader
Oops, Magnetic Secure Transmission, not Transaction, my bad. It is fun to use at the older terminals when people claim they don't support Apple Pay, etc. =)
18:36
@trilolil you will have to restore all users, and re-install all applications. Anything outside of /home/ is at risk but data in /home/ should be safe (that also includes settings, and your desktop, both should be untouched). Make a backup before you proceed to be on the safe side.

Q: My answer was deleted after I fixed it, is this acceptable?

Samuel SantanaI posted an answer which wasn't well received and it got deleted. You can see the question here. android pay > samsung pay
Google's style guidelines are... O_o
but samsung pay is convenient
yo @NathanOsman i need some help
With Android Pay, it always uses the default card. Always.
@KazWolfe Yes?
18:55
so i have a raspberry pi
i need to do something very specific...
Which model Pi?
connect to a serial port, read all the data from it, and dump it to a file as soon as it comes in
b+
Ah.
Actually, my Pi does something somewhat similar with sensor data from an Arduino.
so i have everything i need, and i'm thinking turn this into a service.
I wrote a Qt (C++) app that reads from the serial port.
18:56
problem is, the state of the serial device is more or less unknown. it may or may not be there
Due to being physically disconnected?
right
or powered off or whatever
18:57
so i need some sort of solution for the serial thingy that works even if the device is unplugged
(so, if possible, without locking the serial device)
the pi will be rx-only
Let me see what my app does...
actually i just need something that immediately dumps bytes to a file
Here's the actual code that interacts with the port: github.com/nathan-osman/thsat/blob/master/src/arduino.cpp
that should make life easier
So it attempts to open the device and if it fails (either during opening or afterwards) it will retry the connection in 30 seconds.
The readyRead() signal could be adapted to just readAll() and then dump the data into a file.
19:01
hmm... shell script to test existence of device? if the device does not exist, try again in 5 seconds
I imagine that if the device disappears, an error is thrown when trying to read from it.
if it is, open in screen or something
meh i'll think of something
I am wondering, does anybody know why make or make install is so much slower than doing apt install? AFAIK apt install probably also does "make" behind the scenes
No it doesn't. apt uses pre-compiled binaries. make is doing the compilation from scratch.
19:16
hmm thx
@Seth
But why doesn't everybody share their software with precompiled bins? As that's much quicker
that way users don't have to lose time compiling stuff themselves from scratch

Q: Why is port forwarding via libvirt hook hijacking external NAT traffic?

sysrageI have an Ubuntu box acting as both a NAT gateway as well as hosting KVM virtual machines. I followed a guide to use the libvirt qemu hook to forward ports to one of the KVM VMs, but this seems to also be hijacking outgoing connections to those ports from any of the NAT'd boxes. eno0 = 192.168.7...

@trilolil because make compiles the source code, may be compile the dependencies, link the compiled objects to generate the binaries, however apt install directly fetches the binaries. Compilation is a complicated process.
19:46
So it sounds like Microsoft is keeping Paint but they're moving it to the Windows Store.
20:01
@NathanOsman no, that's Fresh Paint
Whatever it is, there goes one of the first programs to run in Wine.
we still have Notepad
For now...
I wouldn't mind if they killed that off tbh
give us Sublime preinstalled pls
It's basically useless without support for \n newlines.
20:02
srsly
everything goes to one line!
Even just fixing that would make it infinitely more useful.
Remember Windows 98/Me where Notepad couldn't even open files larger than 50 KB?
20:17
pretty sure it still can't
It can.

Q: Does it make sense to continue to post links to apps.ubuntu.com in answers?

Elder GeekSpecifically I'm asking about the concept discussed in the top rated answers in the meta post How to post links that integrate with the Software Center? Once upon a time, when apps.ubuntu.com was up to date this was kind of cool. Currently however, none of the currently supported versions of Ubu...

I actually might like using Windows if computers came preinstalled with Windows Server :P
It's far far more stable than the consumer versions and more lightweight.
I am running four Jenkins slaves, an IDE, explorer, etc. on a server with 1.25 GB of RAM.
You can't even do that with Win10 64-bit, it doesn't meet the system requirements.
@chili555 hey, long time no see!
20:36
Hello, @NathanOsman and all!
How goes life?
It goes well for now. And you?
Good.
Cross-platform programming is hard :D
But I am learning a lot.
20:53
@Rinzwind I'm finally getting to watch Blink today :) \o/
yay.
prepare to get scared
my wifi hates me :(
@ByteCommander but you shouldn't blink
21:26
@NathanOsman no worries :) I'd like to help with the back end too, but I'm not familiar C++ so I don't think I'd be of much help
Yes, but I'm writing it in Go, I think.
@EuanFoster How can we help you troubleshoot if you haven't even told us what the issue is? — Android Dev 27 secs ago
sigh
does JS let you remove classes from an element?
21:50
Are people still buying iPod Classics?
@TheWanderer JS doesn't have classes.
At least, not in the sense that other languages do.
@NathanOsman you have to know I meant element classes
element.classList.remove() works well
Oh.
CSS classes.
Lol, my brain isn't working today.
I have so many other things on my mind.
lesigh
are you serg
21:57
Is jQuery an option?
yeah
but I got it working
Then it is simple:
and I don't care that IE won't work
$('#elementID').removeClass('myclass');
IE should work fine.
not with my method
>:)
21:58
Uh... oh...
This doesn't sound good.
well 10 and up
but I don't want IE users using my app anyway :p
wat
There's always Edge.
that's as bad isn't it?
Which is far more standards compliant anyway.
No, Edge is much better at following standards.
It's right up there with Firefox and Chrome now.
meh it crashes too much for me
21:59
Well, you can't have everything :D
For the record, Chrome can crash too.
Sad face Edge doesn't work with the Proxies I have at work to access our tools. Chrome or Waterfox or Opera all connect quite well. :(
That's a shame.
Although I don't really use Edge much either.
It isn't available for Windows 7 and that's mostly what I find myself using.
Therefore Chrome.
We have actually been told not to use IE or Edge as the proxies just don't work with them for some reason.
22:02
Hmmm.
I personally like Waterfox though. :D
22:46
hello

I would like to know when compiling something from source and installing it using: cmake, make, sudo make install. Is it enough to do "sudo make uninstall" to undo all the previous 3 commands?
depends on the Makefile, there could be a "clean"(-like) target, so e.g. "make clean" or "make tidy" could be needed to clean up the directory from compiled files
anyone using Budgie?

Q: Switching windows of same app on Budgie

LukeI have recently switched to using Budgie as my primary desktop environment, and one thing that has been annoying me is apparent inability to switch between windows of the same program (when there are multiple instances running) from Plank. Alt+ ` (grave) do work usually, though it's kind of annoy...

@Luke : so I should do: sudo make uninstall, make clean
and that's it?
yeah, if it gives no errors it should do fine
ok thx
23:07
Any clue why I can't upgrade my kernel on my server? I've installed the .debs but when I reboot the old 2.6 kernel boots.
23:34
the bootfs or whatever it's called needs to be re-made probs
