And anti-virus manufacturers are cashing in on it because anti-virus users can deflect liability by using a "state-of-the-art" defence mechanism even if anti-viruses don't work in principle.
@DavidFoerster There were times when people laughed about my strict and "old school" security strategy ... seems to have found an end ! :D
@DavidFoerster AV in most cases is useless and sometimes instead of avoiding affection they add things which increase the potential getting affected, so ...
@cl-netbox Same thing when there's another "outrage" about Facebook using its users' data in unexpected ways (from the point of view of the latter) and I tell them that Facebook's actions are morally questionable but legal and if they don't want that they should stop using it. Then they stop talking to me because that's too outlandish.
@DavidFoerster Exactly ! You say the truth ! Sometimes those people are so stupid ... outlandish ??? ... well, I say it's "intelligentish" ! :)
… or rather, they don't talk to me because I'm not on Facebook and e-mail is "too inconvenient". :-(
@DavidFoerster same with me ... but I don't care a dime what people say ... Facebook is the opposite of Privacy and Mail is a good alternative - how can someone call it inconvenient ? But okay ...
15:11
So, yeah, if they're willing to sell their personal information for convenience that's fine but then don't complain about the consequences.
@DavidFoerster Exactly that ! :)
On the other hand I keep encountering public organisations who make Facebook a de-facto mandatory tool to use their services effectively.
@DavidFoerster yes, unbelievable - but that's how things evolve in these days :(
A friend of mine had college lecturers (at a public school) who used Facebook as the primary mean of communication with students, i. e. she didn't receive notifications about rescheduled or cancelled events without it.
By the way @DavidFoerster - seems that not many want to follow my example -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/37461889#37461889 :(
15:17
I encountered multiple (private) online service providers or online communities who required a Facebook or Google account for authentication. Nope, not going to link my Google Developer account to that.
Google is no better than Facebook in that aspect but at least it offers services that are relevant to my studies and profession. I don't really mind if traces of my professional activity leak all over the Internet but I keep personal stuff out of there.
@DavidFoerster We seem to act the same way : first think - then click (as I call it) ! :)
The UK is getting closer and closer to a police state all the time..
https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/6bmpb8/privacy_activist_muhammad_rabbani_faces_terrorism/
I don't feel like wanting to visit UK now..
@Seth and where US is getting closer and closer to is something we better shouldn't talk about - right ? Hi Seth ! :)
Hi @jokerdino ! :) How are you ?
@jokerdino Just don't bring any devices with personal information. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
15:25
Wow, why didn't I think of that!
… also, be white.
hmm
@cl-netbox I am fine, thank you. How you do?
@cl-netbox you got defensive fast. If you pay attention you'll notice I'm not fan of the US either. But at least we have the right to remain silent and US citizenship goes for something.
@jokerdino Fine as well, thanks ! :)
I don't have any mobile devices with personal information but if I had any I wouldn't bring them to the UK before wiping their data (and rebuild it from some online storage).
@Seth Yeah, at least the U.S. have a constitution with unalienable rights. The U.K. doesn't. You have to rely on the European Court of Human Rights for that.
… on the other hand, in the U.S. non-citizens don't really have rights either. Sometimes I think they only grant rights to foreigners to not piss off their allies and friends.
15:30
@DavidFoerster well, the Constitution is ignored all the time, but it's true the legal basis will still help you in court.
Whatever happened to the bastion of human rights, democracy, freedom, liberty, yadda yadda.
@Seth sounds as if you got it wrong : I generally don't make a difference between nations ... generally I like America and their open-minded people ... what I wanted to say is that in both countries (UK and US) things are not on the best way (democracy wise) at the moment. Many things go into the wrong direction ...
@Seth Uhm. . . not really.. Tell that to all those people held in Guantanamo. Some of those are US citizens and many, as I recall, have never even been charged yet. I don't think the UK law is any different to the Patriot Act, is it?
@jokerdino only if you're white and Christian.
It's PATRIOT Act.
15:32
Hi terdon ! :)
It is an acronym or something.
"Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001"
Sheesh. Talk about Newspeak.
@terdon The U.K. doesn't have extra-legal detainment afaik. They just have laws that allow detainment without charges (which the U.S. doesn't because that would violate its constitution).
I don't think anyone has "extra-legal" detainment. Not in the "Western world" anyway.
15:33
@Seth Constitution is the limitation of the State (government) powers.
Anyone else, I mean.
@terdon The detainment facilities in Guantanamo Bay & Co. are extra-legal because the U.S. government (who operates it) claims that it falls outside of U.S. jurisdiction and doesn't fall under anybody else's.
I know. Brilliant, innit?
Also, the U.S. ratified none of the international treaties that would prevent the creation of such extra-legal jurisdictions.
Of course.
15:38
@terdon um, no, very different.
@Seth Why? That also permits detaining citizens with no evidence, doesn't it?
@terdon no
@DavidFoerster Not only those either: foreignpolicy.com/2012/05/17/…
There was a German citizen detained in Guantanamo Bay for over 6 years, most of which after the U.S. government cleared him of all suspicions related to terrorism. The remaining time was because the German government didn't want to take him back (presumably because he might bring legal charges against the secretaries who knew of his detainment and wilfully ignored their duty to protect a German citizen from illegal or inhumane detainment abroad.)
@Seth Are you sure? I know it used to when it was first passed.
15:39
Border patrol can detain you for technically forever, but they also can't refuse you entry either. That's as close as it gets. Besides those things like gitmo that are just abhorrent period.
I like how the UK gets instantly protected here though, no matter what they've done.
@Seth I think you're wrong:
> The NDAA provision first signed into law in 2012, which permits indefinite detention without trial, remains in law as of 2017.
Indefinite detention is the incarceration of an arrested person by a national government or law enforcement agency without a trial, and violates many national and international laws, including human rights laws. In recent years, governments have indefinitely incarcerated individuals suspected of terrorism, sometimes declaring them enemy combatants. == Views == Most of the nations of the world and human rights groups hold unfavorable views of indefinite detention. === Australia === In 1994, indefinite detention was introduced for Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cambodian refugees; previous laws had had...
> Under the Bush administration, similar claims of worldwide detention authority were used to hold even a U.S. citizen detained on U.S. soil in military custody,
*of immigrants
@Seth Read the line just above.
> The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second District struck down an injunction against indefinite detention of U.S. citizens by the president under the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 in a July 17 ruling that is a blow to civil liberties protected by the U.S. Constitution. The appellate court ruled:
@terdon oh it happens. It's not legal. Lots of illegal things are done by our government all the time.
> The Section 1021 of the NDAA allows “detention under the law of war without trial until the end of the hostilities” for “a person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners, including any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported such hostilities in aid of such enemy forces.” The court is technically correct in stating that the law does not
15:44
You should all know by now I'm a big critic of the US. But when I dare criticize the UK on the other hand you all coming rushing to it's defense.
Ah, UK is doing such things legally then?
@Seth I know you are! That's why I'm surprised you haven't heard of this.
@terdon How convenient that they found a war that they can fight perpetually.
And this isn't about defending the UK. Believe me, I am extremely unlikely to do that. Just pointing out that the US also has similar laws.
@terdon looking at that article it seems the courts have struck it down multiple times but the gov. keeps putting it back with different wording...
15:46
@Seth again : you misinterpret it Seth - it's just that ALSO in the US things not always go the way they should go ... we don't defend anything. :)
@terdon no, we don't have a law that makes you a criminal for being silent.
^ that
Right to Speech has an implicit Right to Silence.
> Under the examination stage you can be searched, your devices can be confiscated, and because you have no right to remain silent, this is where it’s connected to the gist of my case. You have to answer when they ask you, “What’s your password?”
I see
15:47
Grr, where is my password reset email people? :|
@Seth lost in the shadows
I wonder if I changed the email I use with them.
@jokerdino Depends on the context. There is no right to silence for witnesses of crimes unless a truthful testimony would incriminate the witness themself.
hi.
Hi @TheXed @ThomasWard ! :)
15:50
@jokerdino The negative right to free speech means that you can't be forced to express an opinion. But a testimony or a statement of self-identification is no opinion. Just like a passphrase is no opinion but a statement of fact.
Selling some Chromebooks...
I guess passphrases would be under Right to Privacy.
Implied from Right to Life.
Or is that inferred.
@jokerdino That could work but there's generally no expectation of privacy in criminal or customs proceedings. All there is is the right to not incriminate yourself.
Passphrase is protected by the 5th amendment preventing self incrimination.
How can someone search your things without a warrant?
15:57
@jokerdino That depends entirely on the country you're in.
@jokerdino The source of a right to privacy varies between legal contexts. In Europe it's based on the right to dignity which implies a right to (informational) self-determination and to not be objectified by other legal entities.
@jokerdino Lots of illegal ways in the US..
@jokerdino Customs or imminent danger/exigent circumstances.
tfw the best way to use XMPP on PC is through a VM by running Conversations on Android.
16:02
@Avery Huh? There are multiple well working XMPP clients on Ubuntu and Linux in general as well as Windows an OS X.
@DavidFoerster Those seem defined reasonable exceptions.
libempathy
if you want one good goal, use one good lib everywhere
@RobotHumans: Does libempathy support some of the more recent popular XEPs in case Avery is interested in that?
only one with OMEMO support is libpurple/pidgin and gajim: omemo.top
@DavidFoerster i have no idea if it does, but it's the library i would use or improve if i were interested in doing anything with xmpp
16:05
and I dislike both as combining everything equals tons of bugs and some workarounds to get some stuff working
@Avery: So let me restate your original complaint: "tfw the best way to use OMEMO, a relatively recent, non-trivial XMPP extension, on PC is through a VM by running Conversations on Android."
it's my understanding telepathy is the top level wrapper that can use both purple and empathy
@DavidFoerster Ok, I didn't scroll up far enough
@RobotHumans Yeah, but I doubt that Avery wants to use anything based on Telepathy if they don't want Purple-based solutions because they're bug-riddled.
Well, then fix the bugs.

It's what I do every day. Kick over an anthill of tests that weren't working because of inconsistencies and poke it until I can pin them down - then hand it off to dev. Sadly, when people use "tests completed per number of hours" it looks bad when they only give you the hard tests until you just stop clocking in and say "I'm waiting for dev to get back to us, but I didn't bill for the waiting"
@DavidFoerster meh, yeah.
16:13
Like, don't hand me the test that says "enter derpderp in the search field. ensure only lines containing derpderp are returned" and instead say "Verify a new widget" that requires wrapping 20 APIs with broken API docs... but I'm irritated, so take that with a grain of salt

@Zanna There's a meme in Germany when the police catches someone with a huge cache of weapons, explosives or chemicals for the production of explosives in their home: It's alright; he's white and neither Muslim nor associated with left extremist groups; he'll get a fine, community and maybe a few months on probation and that's it.
user136984
@terdon Yeah, I really like them, and it's a fun video.
…certainly less than a year because then he'd lose his police job.
@DavidFoerster yeah I know. I really know. I know the implication of what you said is completely correct, and I am mad about it, and I know you are mad about it
And it's good to call it out too
I mean, I can kind of follow the line of argument about ideological extremism but it's rarely applied equally to all ideologies. There is no relevant group of fanatic Christians in Germany, so there's that at least, but right wing extremists are often better off than left wing in criminal proceedings.
It doesn't help that about half of the upper and middle leadership of extremist right wing groups are paid and protected informants of the domestic intelligence service. (A former leader of a right wing political party said that the party wouldn't have existed without funding by the intelligence services.)
hmm. It seems I missed an important discussion :)

Q: How should I manage my charging cycles to extend battery life?

AalokI use my laptop throughout the day for various work. My usage starts sometime after breakfast and continuous into night, till about 9 pm, then breaks for dinner and continues for another hour or two. During this entire while, my laptop obviously gets discharge a couple of times. What I currently ...

… and that's no conspiracy theory. It's well documented by former and (anonymous) current members of these right wing groups, the intelligence services, police, prosecutors. It came even up and was confirmed in prominent court cases.

@terdon: Listening to that got me into a really Jazzy Blues mood last night so I started listening to:

What the hell should I make for dinner?

@DavidFoerster language
@terdon Not really satiating. ;-P
Better?
@DavidFoerster Thanks. And don't look at me, I didn't make that rule, I just have to enforce it. This room has an extremely low tolerance for profanity .
@muru Yeah, I saw that. I'd say not in its current state. Maybe with some details on the exact hardware, well the battery, it might be on topic on SU. Not sure though.
OK
17:37
@muru @terdon I think it would be a good candidate for Super User as is. He's asking how to best treat his battery. Yeah, the exact battery would be helpful but it's 99% likely to be either li-ion or li-polymer.
Yeah, maybe. Is the dawg around?
@JourneymanGeek?

It's about 0130.
Ah

But it seems like we CV questions about MAAS whether they mention CentOS or not! I see them in the queue and skip them because idk
@Seth Seems quite clearly on topic if it's a Canonical product. Isn't it?
Now, we might want to make it off topic, but I don't see how it can be under the current rules.
Which is a shame since I doubt we'll be able to help much.

@terdon I didn't even realise it was until now >_<
I hadn't even heard of it until now :)
@terdon yeah, looks like it after viewing the MAAS page. His question didn't make it clear.
I don't see any reason to make it off-topic.
@Seth Me neither. Only that if it's a question about how this MAAS thing interacts with the latest CentOS, it seems unlikely that we'll be able to help.
19:33
Are any Canonical employees still active these days?
Maybe we should ask them to keep an eye on the MAAS questions.

is it safe to wipe the remaining two windows parts and expand my ubuntu part?
20:49
@craftxbox Define safe. You say you have a back-up image of the drive or partition, so you won't lose any (additional) data. There's just the risk that the back-up medium fails.
very low
@craftxbox that's not exactly explanative
Yes, the risk is quite low and probably low enough for most people and cases but not necessarily for you/yours. Only you can judge that.
oh, you were talking about the risk
alright so i shold ne safe?
20:54
@craftxbox I can't parse that sentence.
are you a robot?
s/shold ne/should be
@craftxbox No. Would that change anything?
should i be safe to wipe them
Ok. I understand that. However, you're still referring to "safe" which I asked you to define. Without knowledge of what level of safety you find acceptable nobody can answer that question.
i shouldnt lose the backup
20:57
Well, if you don't wipe or overwrite the back-up then you'll still have the back-up.

@NathanOsman I'm sure!
You should just use C# for everything :P
C# main here
don't use c# for everything

don't make yourself suffer
while my statement was intended in jest, I do wonder why you say that.
23:19
Hello roomies!
2
Roomies. I like that! :D
What's wrong with C#?
I thought it was basically C with a little better type checking or something along those lines.
hey @NathanOsman
C# is fine. Sometimes I don't like the MS design assumptions it tries to force you into when using VS. Like defaulting to data-bound controls, etc.
@Seth My S6 battery was dying so I just got a S8+
ew and not-so-ew @chaskes
23:31
Um, on the samsungs? Me like 'em
I just saw an S8 / S8+ billboard an hour ago. Nice wrap around screen.
lim Speed(TouchWiz) time --> ∞ = 0
@chaskes Cool!
what happened to Osman
I saw Nathan last night.
23:33
I wonder how hard it would be to replace the S6's battery..
anyone else wanna help me test my IAPs?
@Seth HAHAHAHAHA
@chaskes yeah this mostly
I will refund I promise :p
I also don't like the solution/project architecture
I wanted to wait to see the S8 Note, but that's not coming out til fall now.
23:34
s8 note or note 8?
@TheWanderer I don't think it would be that hard.
@Seth It was paid for and Android 7 was a little slower on it, so I figured just go new.
@chaskes if you can that's great. I was just curious.
@Seth it really isn't that easy
@Avery Exactly. Overall everything is fine, but MS makes it kinda hard to move away from their model.
23:35
The advert I saw was for an "S8" or "S8+" but it's $300 off and it's a phone, don't know if it's Galaxy or Note or whatever.
Samsung doesn't have the special adhesive for the battery on the S6
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well it's either S* or Note *
@TheWanderer indeed it looks harder than I thought, but still doable.
or J* or P* or E*
@TheWanderer "duly noted"
@Seth doable, maybe, but I'd wear gloves
23:36
Not as easy as those other phones Zach was doing "clear editions" on though.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix >_>
@chaskes also I don't like how it's a pain to use nuget from cli, but it's meh other than that
@Seth I want a clear phone now lol
but alas, my removable back is metal....
wait
removable....
When my Alcatel dies (if it ever does) I'm going to buy... another Alcatel :)
23:37
I have access to a CNC/lathe
@TheWanderer ding ding ding ;p
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
oh
nuget is on arch repos
not even aur...
but seriously
anyone wanna test mah app
hm, is restarting lightDM still lightdm restart or systemctl restart lightdm.service?
23:42
I use sudo service lightdm restart :p
right, it's service lightdm restart. Been a while since I've run it.
When I restarted lightdm I don't remember using systemd
Hmm, redshift keeps crashing gnome-shell but only in Ubuntu Gnome 17.04
ah gnome...
is redshift the auto screen dimmer / brightner based on sunrise / sunset?
23:44
not trying to start that convo... ;)
but I think it's an Ubu connected bug since it works everywhere else fine
@WinEunuuchs2Unix It's one of several things that do that, yeah
@chaskes I wrote one it's been working nicely for a few months now... but it adjusts display brightness every minute... not the red balance like the other packages do.
Sounds interesting. I don't like frequent changes though. I always turn off auto adjusters.
It requires bash version 4 though.
When it adjusts every minute you can't see the change... and usually it's sunrise to 120 minutes and minus 120 minutes to sunset so it's not all day or all night long.
sunrise and sunset times are obtained with cron daily some packages make you type the times in.
bash 4 has been out for 8 years
yeah I know :)
I was bragging you don't need Gnome 3.24 and Ubuntu 17.04 is all ;)
23:50
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you shouldn't use systemd anyways
Plus you don't have to install a 3rd party app because bash is built in. You do need Zenity for configuration of transition times and display levels
sudo apt remove systemd -y --force
@Avery I wasn't the one asking the systemd question av
@Avery oh dear
Personally I always keep brightness and blue light both way down 24/7
23:51
My intel adapter goes up to 8,2?? and I have it set to 300 at night and 2,000 in day time. with 90 minute transition after sunrise and before sunset I think... haven't changed it in a long time so don't remember.
tbf I'd love to see an ubuntu remix without systemd
not that I'd use it (on my main machine at least), I like systemd, but just to see if it's possible/usable.
^^^ heres the display auto brightness config
I should rewrite it in yad though which is more powerful than zenity.
Maybe you should show the current settings
that's why I should do it in yad
zenity I have to put current settings in the label before the data field.
see them?
they are in brackets
Oh, yeah, they looked like max possible values to me
23:54
(parenthesis)
hell no, 8,234 or something is max and it burns your eyeballs out.
My laptop is inside on sunny days though. I guess if you were outside with sun shining on screen you might use 4,000 maybe?
It's a 10 pound laptop so it doesn't get out much... for that I have a 1 pound phone.
not reading it that closely... so chill please
Anyway if you want the bash scripts they are posted here: askubuntu.com/questions/894460/…
like I said they've been working perfectly for months now.
Huh, you mention redshift in that answer, but just asked me what it was... :)
The only catch is the 1 minute delay... so if you suspend in the morning when it's dark and resume after work when it's bright average 30 second delay before screen brightness changes.
I think gnomes program is called "night dimmer" or "light dimmer" or "night light" or something like that. I think redshift is the one they copied from.
There is another one I think called F-Lux or something.
Then there are some for Windows too.
