@NathanOsman I see you have a new pic. Looks like a different man.
No, it's me still :D
Seems Seth is sleeping, I should go to bed too, lol.
Um it's only 5pm where Seth lives
Pittsburgh - Ottawa game is just starting. I think the Pens will come out hard on this one to win.
00:15
I'm hoping for an Ottawa win.
Lots of Canadians are... however right now it's 0-0 and Ottawa are playing like they are trying to protect the lead...LOL
My picks for the cup (based on hats I've bought) are 1) Nashville, 2) Anaheim, 3) Pittsburgh. Right now international readers are wondering where these cities are.
00:35
C'mon, it's high time we had a Canadian team win :D
You can't sell out to the American crowd and drink from the cup too.

Q: Font weights appearing bold

Zach InglisAfter much debugging, I've found that if I include fonts that have more weights that are classified outside of "Regular" and "Bold", it defaults to the most bold version of that font. Thus Helvetica Nueue becomes Helvetica Nueue Black. I have noticed this on a few other fonts. I was going to u...

Q: tmpfs does not overflow to swap

m33lkyI've configured tmp in /etc/fstab like this: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 2 The problem is that now /tmp is limited to half of the machine's memory, and when it reaches that limit I'm getting "no space left on device" error.

3 hours later…
03:36
\o/ @Seth
Blender keeps doing something weird on my Mac. As soon as I exit, it locks up the machine.
03:56
actually @seth i need help
@KazWolfe woohoo!
@KazWolfe oh :/
that didn't last long :P
mainly, how the hell do i get dsd+ for linux?
or whatever because it seems to be windows only
@KazWolfe ugh. Well that's lame. Tried WINE?
iirc there was another program that could do it too.. Let me check.
@KazWolfe this is not incorrect
Is Clang faster than GCC on ARM?
04:02
Cuz I have a project building on a quad-core ARM machine and it's painfully slow.
> While DSD was intended to be patent-free, mbelib describes functions that may be covered by one or more U.S. patents owned by DVSI Inc. Compiling or using mbelib may infringe on patents rights and/or require licensing. It is unknown if DVSI will sell licenses for software that uses mbelib. If you do not have a license and are in a jurisdiction protected by the DVSI patents you should not compile or use this source code.
yay more patent nonsense.
software patents are so evil.
@Seth what's the catch?
@KazWolfe no catch. I just have weird speech patterns.
@KazWolfe several people online are saying they use DSD+ in WINE
what?
doesn't it need some sort of audio sinking?
also I don't like Fedora.
04:17
this radio thing is getting complicated.
@KazWolfe radio is very complicated, yes.
no, i mean just the setup
yes
that's part of radio
getting sdr to pipe into JACK to pipe into DSD+ on wine
lol anything with JACK is complicated xD
04:19
Oh dear.
I just got a ton of emails from Apple regarding new security updates.
also one of the instructors in the Linux II class I'm sitting in on just said today "Don't just go update samba or the windows server because it will break" and I'm just like... dude..
that's what everyone said pre WannaCry. Like. Seriously.
- 802.1X: A malicious network with 802.1X authentication may be able to
capture user network credentials
- Accessibility Framework: An application may be able to gain system privileges
- CoreAnimation: Processing maliciously crafted data may lead to arbitrary
code execution
- CoreAudio: An application may be able to read restricted memory
- DiskArbitration: An application may be able to gain system privileges
- HFS: An application may be able to read restricted memory
- iBooks: A maliciously crafted book may open arbitrary websites
And that's just the first half of the first email...
Wow, there's gotta be more than 50 serious security issues fixed in these updates.
Don't ever tell me macOS is more secure than Windows.

1 hour later…
@Seth there's a proper way to update
Plan, test, backup then update in stages
not update willynilly. Or worse, not at all
06:07
like really please close. move it to meta or something. people are answering it
someone even upvoted it
There.
Migrated at least.
thank you!
There isn't much salvagable in that question.
So I don't expect it to live too long on Meta either.
Yeah, the migration is a waste of time.
And annoying since I have to cast my VTC again.
06:28
hmm sorry
I voted to close as unclear
@NathanOsman The amount of problems fixed are not what makes an OS less/more secure than another. The amount of obscurity about flaws does. Case in point: the virus from last weekend.

it's there
All OP needs is education about AskUbuntu
haha I see it but it says 0 answers
I see 3 answers there. who deleted the other answers?
and it seems only post that can be interacted with is your answer!

I posted it at the same time or a few seconds after it got closed
my post is in a strange limbo
I think the other answers were deleted by the un-migration
but my answer escaped because it came after
un-migration?
You can include some How-to/What is this links into your answer
oh yes? which ones? feel free to edit...

user136984
It cause some minor issues with something in the formatting later.
user136984
But I've fixed those issues now and the whole thing works much better.
@ParanoidPanda sure. I think the repeated section on the "native host messaging application" should be moved into a common section before the FF/Chrome sections, but that's up to you.
user136984
@muru: Maybe, I'll have a think about how to do it. I'm too busy to do that right now, but I'll probably get that fixed later today. :)

hi cl-netbox. I may need to quit because I'm in power shortage :)
boxy!
@Anwar no! he is boxy
14:26
I wish I knew boxy's full name :)
it is boxy >:)
@Anwar you can call me Chris ! :)
hmmm anwy would save us 1 letter too >:-D
@Rinzwind :D :D :D
@cl-netbox 1 letter more than boxy so rejected
14:27
@cl-netbox nice to know :)
"any" is a bit vague D:
@Rinzwind okay ... accepted ! +1 ! :D :D :D
hmm I have a thought. "box" would be even shorter
@Rinzwind r ist shorter than rinzy - right ? :D
3-letter-names own :=D
@cl-netbox could be confusing when talking about the coding language
14:29
rewind is a nice alternative for Rinzwind
I also accept "Wim" >:-D
@Anwar or reWIN ? what do you think @Rinzwind ? :D :D :D
I want nothing to do with "wine" :P
@Rinzwind hahaha ... I changed it to WIN ! :D :D :D
what about windy?
14:31
@Rinzwind by the way : same with me - I hate WINE ! :)
@cl-netbox I see no point. vbox/vmware do a far superior job
@Rinzwind exactly ! though KVM / qemu is better ! :)
Can you use vbox's guest pc's internet in host? I have an old modem that won't work in Ubuntu anymore, but in windows it does.
@Anwar I don't think you can - the hardware of the host gets virtualized into the guest - so you always use the host hardware. :)

it looks like :O
You're using a zero?

which it is not
I am not
o_0
it's the second to last emote in your emote image that I see
Yup, it generates this text: O_o
that's an image
and it looks nothing like o\_O
wtf
16:50
So you're saying that o_0 isn't shock?
@NathanOsman I can move the cursor in the first line, but I can't get it to the second line... Haaaalp :D
@NathanOsman that emote is like the mouth is closed, one eye is closer/bigger than the other
@AndroidDev nice
@AndroidDev I'm not terribly familiar with text displays like that one.
@TheWanderer I'm using Emoji One so if you can find a better image which is still in their collection, that's fine.
16:51
Er, no.
"Image not found" doesn't do it justice.
:P
@NathanOsman setting D7 and D6 to HIGH should set the DRAM address the the first column in the second row, but when I send that command the cursor just disappears :(
@NathanOsman EmojiOne was great until they went non-free

seriously?
Find someone that looks at you the way windows phone users look at windows phone. https://t.co/KuCyiFfiGL
Hahahahahahahaha
@ByteCommander answer it.
I need to make every 4-lettered misspelling of sudo as alias
sado, sedo, sido, sodo, sudo...
@Seth no thanks
yes. most of the time it's soud for me :(
17:15
I don't think I ever typed that...
sido and sodu sometimes maybe
why i there?
I used suod as an alias for a while. But it kills completion :(
use zsh
and ohmyzsh
what about that^? :D
because the I key is right next to the U key
and enable sudo package
so you can add sudo just by esc-esc
17:19
@ByteCommander oh. that explains.
Coincidentally it's also the artist name of a German singer (rap or so, I guess, not my taste)
@Avery I have zsh installed and use it sometimes. how do I add the package?
Do you have ohmyzsh installed?
yes
Then just add "sudo" inside to plugins=()
17:20
@Anwar Not really a dupe, just similarly stupid (although that other question was meant in a humorous way)
should look like this if you want your shell to load in an hour
@ByteCommander Yeah. I was being funny :)
Look at my comment above, I linked that exact question already - you're late :P
But also you can't be sure it won't help future visitors :P
17:22
I used your comment to find that question.
... by clicking the link
what part of "exact duplicate" are you guys missing?
s/you guys/Anwar/ pls
;)
@Anwar it's not funny... you're closing someone's question wrongly on purpose because it's "funny"?
Look, we all know it's a simple question, but it's still a question that deserves an answer.
17:24
OK. I'm retracting :)
Thank you. Remember: There is a real person on the other side of that question!
Q: "It says to remove the installation medium and press Enter. What should I do?"
A: "Remove the installation medium and press Enter."
Great.
I VTCed as unlikely to be helpful.
It has been "solved" in the comments already anyway
that's literally half the time it takes for my PC to boot
@Seth Your comment is now obsolete askubuntu.com/questions/915814/…

@ByteCommander helped one person, didn't it? "not likely to be reproduced"? Seeing as every single installation ever presents this text... yeah no.
similar to .gifv's of imgur, but imgur is blocked in turkey.
@Avery I know what the website is, but that URL...
yeah
@Seth I still think my opinion is justified, so I'll leave the vote as it is. If it gathers enough to be closed, fine. If not, okay too.
Either Android or the mDNS package I'm using in my Android app is doing something wrong here. The rdata for the PTR record is supposed to point to the SRV record. Android is instead using it directly as a hostname and tries to obtain the A and AAAA record.
ಠ_ಠ
17:33
@NathanOsman hahah
So now I have to figure out how to work around this.
@ByteCommander I don't think "installation media" is all that obvious an expression
@ByteCommander We don't close questions because they are too simple or because we don't like them. We close them because they can't be answered, either at all or in our format. This meets none of that.

Q: Create cron job

Xozui wanted to create a cron job that will be lunched a file at 2AM only at weekends (Thursday,Friday,Saturday) for some reassonse i get really confuesd doing that, can someone give an example on how to do this? Thanks!

> This describes a problem that can't be reproduced that seemingly went away on its own or was only relevant to a very specific period of time. It's off-topic as it's unlikely to help future readers.
17:42
I don't think any of those apply...
I think it's close enough.
To which part?
And on SO, that no-repro close reason explicitly states that it includes simple typos and stuff like that
> This question was caused by a problem that can no longer be reproduced or a simple typographical error. While similar questions may be on-topic here, this one was resolved in a manner unlikely to help future readers. This can often be avoided by identifying and closely inspecting the shortest program necessary to reproduce the problem before posting.
It's not a simple typographical error...
No it's a user doesn't want to read error.
17:44
And SO is a wild place
Don't you think "medium" is a tricky noun?
Maybe English is not their L1
I personally don't think that, no.
And especially in the context, I can't imagine anything else that would fit, even if one doesn't understand the word.
It could mean delete something
Anyway, up to you how you vote
yeah, may everyone decide what they think is best for the site.
Whatever will happen then is fine for me.
I think It's very unlikely that it'll be useful. But I retracted my vote. Upto the community now
> I guess we should try to err on the side of looking for answers and valuing answers if we can, since answering questions and not closing them is what actually helps people (dupe targets help a lot of course, but only because they have answers!)

one too many off-by-one errors really destroys a person...
I don't get it!
most programming languages are zero-index. so someone's first language would be "language zero", not "language one"
also off-by-one errors are notoriously hard to debug.
