government forms = madness

Android == madness

Android == Linux 3.13?

3.18 for me.
OxygenOS :D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Depends on the version
@TheWanderer no

My Android has been crashing this last week... sound static spike in music player requires reboot. but today chrome just crashed on a website and I had to reboot because of that. Haven't had an OTA system update in a while though. Strange...

12:14 AM
Which phone do you have?

Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 5.5"

Alcatel? IMHO that brand in junk :\

> In the case of shared records, a host MUST send a "goodbye" announcement with RR TTL zero (see Section 10.1, "Goodbye Packets") for the old rdata, to cause it to be deleted from peer caches, before announcing the new rdata.
AHA.

Yeah but it's cheap :D And the stereo speakers plus 1920 screen is very nice.

You can get a brand new in box sealed N5 for $150

12:16 AM
And it has a built in radio tuner which is nice for work.
If I buy another phone it'll probably be the Idol 4 because the stereo speakers are an extra .2 watts.
I basically use my phone as a music player for the most part. Maybe 2 or 3 text messages a week.

Nah, buy a quality brand like the Moto G4 play

Well of course I use it for internet and Stack Exchange too when in transit.

not some cheap Chinese junk with pre-installed malware

I looked at the Moto.
The price was similar but it had fewer features.
I hope Ottawa and Washington win.... That would be a cool series between those two.

But my beloved Penguins :P
Anyone remember this?
May 2 at 7:02, by Nathan Osman
I went a bit overkill for my next render. 16-bit PNGs at 60fps - in DCI 4K.
Well, it may actually be finishing tonight.
All four seconds of footage.

12:35 AM
o_O

@NathanOsman What are the CPU/GPU temps like?

@AndroidDev Good question.
The GPU isn't in use at all, since it's an integrated Intel GPU.
But let's find out about the CPU.

I mean, it's been going for 6 days, so... it might be quite toasty by now
(considering it's a Mac mini)

The case is very warm to the touch.
But that's normal when the CPU is in use.

Is the fan going at 6,900RPM?

12:38 AM
I can't hear anything.

The Mini is very silent.
Even under full load.

exam went just like i expected
total bleh

Yeah, but you know some of Dell's laptops that used the 1st gen Core i chips would get up to 90c before the fan went to full speed

12:40 AM
That's not good.
Apple builds everything themselves though, so I assume they have taken thermal properties into consideration when designing the case.
They have a custom-built motherboard.
(Trust me, I know. I took one apart.)

No. But then again don't you remember the screenshot I showed you a while back when I was rendering a video on my laptop? 100C and the CPU was still turbo-boosting
Even the newer ones aren't great

Yes, laptops can suffer from that for sure.
@AndroidDev ---^

Yeah, but I mean having two cores at 102C and you're it's still boosting to 3.5Ghz? The base speed is 2.7Ghz and the thermal shutdown is 105C Tjunction
@NathanOsman Not bad at all

People should start to worry when their CPU exceeds 70° C.
That might not be a problem but if it climbs much higher, it can cause problems.

@NathanOsman For AMD desktop chips, yeah, but the Intel chips especially in laptops are good up till 80-85

12:45 AM
The only component in your PC that should be hotter than 80° C is your GPU.
@AndroidDev Oh?
That's good to know.
I didn't realize Intel chips could tolerate higher temperatures.

Yeah, the FX series aren't supposed to get hotter than 75
And the AMD laptop chips can't really take the extra heat either

Yeah, the fans go nuts on mine when the temperature gets close to that number.

I don't own one, but I've heard that it's perfectly normal for an AMD R9 290X to be running at over 95C....

I have a 270X.

Who needs a heater if you have one of those things?

12:47 AM
And yes, it can get every bit that hot.
:P
I don't even worry until it hits 105° C.
And if you thought the fan on my CPU was loud...
Having both fans going is very, very noisy.

Just for the heck of it, I pushed my FX-6300 to 4.7Ghz to see how high of a Cinebench score I could get...
But I immediately brought it back down
No need to wreck the VRMs

Have you ever tried liquid cooling?

I was surprised at how well the Hyper 212 Evo cooled it.
It could keep it at just over 75C when running Prime95
Of course, I only ran it that hot for like 60 seconds
But no, I haven't tried any AIOs because I'm afraid of what might happen if it leaks
And building your own custom loop is just way to expensive

Boom!

Done?

12:51 AM
Actually, it might not be all that bad.
I imagine they fill the tubes with distilled water.
So if it leaked, the damage may not be quite as significant.

ANDROID WHY CANT YOU JUST LET US USE THE HIDDEN APIS

But distilled water will still pick up the impurities in short order

@TheWanderer Shouldn't the real solution be not to hide them?
@AndroidDev Hmm... true.

@NathanOsman well yeah
that's part of letting us use them
this Gradle build is taking forever....

@NathanOsman But why go liquid when you could get this?
That thing probably weighs 5LBS!
Okay, maybe not that much...

12:54 AM
o_O

O_O
That is going to freeze the CPU.
:P

And it's only $80 too

I also imagine it isn't quiet...

It's a Noctua, so it's supposed to be really quiet
Or wait, how about you put a JET ENGINE on your CPU?!

that's not a jet engine

12:58 AM
I know :P
HOLY COW!
@NathanOsman Those fans use more power than your entire computer! --^
(In the vid)
That's how you cool Pentium 4s, AMD FX-9590s, and Nvidia GTX480s, people
@NathanOsman This however, will legitimately freeze your CPU:
Okay, time to stop posting huge pics before the mods get angry :D

that's what Class$Something.class means
it's for inner classes

@TheWanderer Yep
Took me a while to figure that out too

1:50 AM
WOOHOOO
@KazWolfe I made an abomination hybrid of using a modified android.jar to access hidden APIs and reflection
IWindowManager iWindowManager = IWindowManager.Stub.asInterface(ServiceManager.checkService(Context.WINDOW_SERVICE));
        Class<?> iw = iWindowManager.getClass();
        if (SDK_INT > 24) {
            iw.getMethod("setForcedDisplayDensityForUser", int.class, int.class, int.class).invoke(iWindowManager, Display.DEFAULT_DISPLAY, Integer.getInteger(newDPI), 0);
        } else {
            iw.getMethod("setForcedDisplayDensity", int.class, int.class).invoke(iWindowManager, Display.DEFAULT_DISPLAY, Integer.decode(newDPI));

chance_of_summoning_cthulu += 50

lol
so here's a question
why does Android 4.3 need the WAKE_LOCK permission to use reflection??

2:06 AM
Wat.

exactly

WHAT THE

Something doesn't sound right about that.

if (SDK_INT > 24) {
    methodName = "setForcedDisplayDensityForUser";
} else {
    methodName = "setForcedDisplayDensity";
}
Also don't define iw, just use iWindowManager.getClass().

2:25 AM
@KazWolfe that .getClass() didn't work for some reason
that's why I have the separate values
because, ANDROID

@NathanOsman So how does the render look?
@KazWolfe Do we allow questions asking for help setting up a hacking tool? askubuntu.com/questions/913257/metasploit-wont-launch

@KazWolfe and the methodName thing won't work
because each method takes a different number of args
@KazWolfe if you want to clean it up, go submit a PR on GH
I need to sleep

2:42 AM
@AndroidDev Still got a few minutes left.

@NathanOsman Why does my app throw an exception on Android 4.3 but works fine on MM?
Caused by: android.content.res.Resources$NotFoundException: File res/drawable/ic_photo_black_24dp.xml from drawable resource ID #0x7f020061
What's up with that?

Are you testing in the emulator?
Or on an actual device?

The emulator. But it works fine on my Nexus 7 on MM
Just now firing up the Nougat emulator to see what happens there
@NathanOsman Works fine on the Nougat emulator

What does res/drawable/ic_photo_black_24dp.xml look like?
Perhaps something in the XML is causing problems.

<vector android:alpha="0.44" android:height="24dp"
android:viewportHeight="24.0" android:viewportWidth="24.0"

</vector>

3:04 AM
Well that was easy to diagnose :P
> "Android 4.4 (API level 20) and lower doesn't support vector drawables."
You'll have to use PNG to support 19 or lower :(
Apparently there's some support library you can use.

Wat.
Android Studio didn't warn me?

That's weird that it didn't warn you.
It's usually pretty good about that.

It can warn about memory leaks but not that my minAPI doesn't support some calls?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I've got another wat situation here:
com.larswerkman.holocolorpicker.ColorPicker colorPicker= (ColorPicker) findViewById(R.id.picker);
how does that return null?
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Cannot add a null child view to a ViewGroup
@NathanOsman If you find anything on that, please @ me your response. I'm going to hit the sack :)

3:21 AM
Wat.
BBC still requires Flash?
Boo.

3:40 AM
oh my god. i go to dinner and i get hammered with pings.
@AndroidDev Yep.
We assume they know what they're doing and aren't going to do anything stupid.

anyone running google music manager?

4:00 AM
Also is there ever any plan for ChromeOS(which now runs Android apps) to merge with debian distro?

Probably not.
Debian is very, very different from ChromeOS.

Nothing on my phone would play the video properly at first.
And then I realized ffmpeg was outputting video in yuv444p instead of yuv420p.
It worked fine after correcting that.

@Ravexina basically yes. kernels are added to the current system and not automatically removed (there is an option for that but we never adopted it)

@Anwar I don't think so. It's just that @Rinzwind posted an opinion based answer :P

I read it as essentially asking what a tty is, how it is defined and whether that definition would cover desktop sessions.

@NathanOsman How did the render turn out?
Or do you still have to render all the frames into a video?

@AndroidDev It turned out quite well.
Turns out I didn't have PNG compression set as high as it could be.
So each frame is a bit larger than it needed to be but that's okay.
13 GB is a lot but not compared to the 2 TB drive it's stored on.

I thought PNG was uncompressed?

It is lossless, but it does support varying levels of compression.
The more you compress it, the more time the PC spends on it.

Sorta like archiving a file?

5:11 PM
Yes.

So it should work best for drawn stuff with big areas of solid colors.

@NathanOsman So 55MB each?

About 50 MB, yes.

\o

It's a 16-bit PNG though. 4096 × 2160.

5:14 PM
16 because 8 RGB + 8 A?

Nope, each channel is 16-bits.

Oh, okay, yeah, I was kinda confused there for a second :D

That gives me the ability to push the image through a program like RAWTherapee and touch up the color afterward.

So how long do you think it takes to render a fully animated movie?

It was interesting because ffmpeg wanted to use yuv444p when encoding the video. Which is fine except few video players are capable of decoding it quickly enough. So I had to manually specify yuv420p.

5:17 PM
I guess they rent a server farm for a few weeks or something

@AndroidDev Depends on the type of video.
The difference between Big Buck Bunny and something similar to a Pixar film is quite large.

@NathanOsman I was thinking of the latter.
Though I do wonder how long it took to render BBB in 4k @60FPS

They did distributed rendering IIRC.
