Q: Installing Broadcom Wireless Drivers

Fer1805I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. What are the steps to install Broadcom wireless drivers for a BCM43xx card? I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explan...

If you have any problems, post a Q on the main site and I'm sure Chili555 or Pilot6 will be able to help you out
Yeah. I got apt command not found when doing that.
:(
Am on 13.04 if that helps.
you just installed 13.04?
That's been EOL since late 2013!
From my old dvd rw rip.
first off, install 14.04. or 16.04
00:12
i only want to get online so I can update.
I didn't have a version of 14.04 or 16.04 handy.
well you're not gonna be able to get online without ethernet
do you have Windows handy?
2
words I never though I'd hear ;p
Started fresh. Again, my fault for not planning ahead.
ah
does it still run tho?
lol
Well, you need to start with something that works to fix things
00:18
i wiped my damn drive. Nothing but Ubuntu left now.
and its always good to have an LTS or current release
ok. what works?
got ethernet? spare wifi dongle? another PC?
i do have a free software foundation trisquel 7.0 membership card that's bootable and can get online. If you can tell me where to find the b43 firmware and where to copy it over in 13.04 I'll be golden.
I... just...
ooh. Why not install that?
download 16.04 from that
00:20
You know it works, and you can use that to bootstrap a new install
trisquel 7.0 is from 2015
> Am on 13.04 if that helps.
13.04 is from.... 2013
which is from 2012 or 2013
also, you can/should install from USB where possible anywya
optical drives are lame
Runs old Firefox clone that isn't supported by most websites but likely could download the ISO but it's got limited flash storage.
Are you saying I should download the ISO?
00:24
GitKraken is great
kinda wish it had a way to browse files but it's better than GH Desktop
Hello all!
now downloading 16.04 iso.
@TheWanderer no
git cli > others
I had to use git cli after switching to linux from windows with GH Desktop
it. was. the. best. thing. ever.
welp. the limited flash storage has bit me in the ass.
00:47
@AdamTheChespin can't you download to the HDD?
@TheWanderer not in trisquel live. That makes my main hard drive read only. :(
@AdamTheChespin remount as rw?
Actually it mounts it as no write permission.
@AdamTheChespin she means you could try mounting it as rw
01:02
sudo mount -o rw,remount /whatever/the/drive/mount/point/is
It's name is just 118 GB Volume
find out where it's mounted
And I wouldn't know where to find that
look under /mnt/ and /media/USERNAME/
@AdamTheChespin Watch the language
01:06
@AndroidDev it's fine
@TheWanderer Four instances within a very short time span is a bit much, don't you think?
We're not reddit
@AndroidDev meh
@TheWanderer We don't tolerate that language on the main site, so why should we here?
because it's chat
and much moe relaxed
we don't tolerate random questions about Java on the main site, so should we tolerate that here?
Well, I think that's a bit different, but I see your point.

Fick dich!!!! Sie fischen ficken !! I'm dying xD
@TheWanderer Although @ThomasWard doesn't seem to like it either: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/2592040#2592040
who cares about @ThomasWard though?
he only runs this whole simulation we're in
@TheWanderer What? You dare to speak poorly of @ThomasWard? If you're not careful, he will release his LAZORZ and IGBMs on you and then cast you into /dev/null!
:P
01:29
And also Seth doesn't seem to like it either: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/8756371#8756371
Just sayin' but if two mods don't like it, then I'm not sure it's acceptable behavior @TheWanderer

01:53
@AndroidDev Seth didn't like my new "One Ubuntu Version 18" proposal either :)

@AdamTheChespin I see you updated your bio to say that you were banned for an hour by a mod. That isn't true. You were banned automatically by the system, not by a mod. There are no mods in here at the moment. However, several of the mods have stated in here that they want users to watch the language. So, please watch your language in the future :)
Good news for you is the suspension ends in 22 minutes
I went ahead and lifted it early. Foul language is not appreciated, but your message was flagged over 40 minutes after you posted it which seems over the top for one f word.
@Seth Two f and an s
If I remember correctly
Apparently I did not read the entire history. @AdamTheChespin please tone your language down.
@AdamTheChespin You're welcome to come back in now that Seth has lifted the ban early.
i doubt i'll trust you people after what happened.
too elitist for me.
02:23
This is a community-moderated site actually
We do have full-on mods like Seth,
But regular users can earn privileges to use some moderator tools
no thank you.
What would you prefer? No mods at all?
It was the system that took the action, not a human
then the system is elitist.
the developers who made this site are at fault.
even the network devs.
Have you read the policy?
that should be be nice and perfect.
outright suspending someone for one mistake is too heavy handed.
it's like a one strike and you're out policy.
02:30
It was only an hour
but still.
If you get suspended on the main site,
It is for days
And it's not a one strike
You had posted several separate messages
If it was only one, you wouldn't have been suspended
Hi @jokerdino how are you doing?
@AdamTheChespin So did you get 16.04 downloaded?
i'm reserving judgment on trust with this community due to the events. And I don't think I'd tell you if I did or not because of preceding statement.
but if you must know, I didn't. I gave up cause trisquel was being a jerk.
Keep in mind this is just a chatroom accompanying the main Q&A site
and locking down my main hard drive. only other option is to somehow get someone to mail me a preburned copy.
my Mac is down so that won't work.
02:35
Can you buy a blank DVD and burn the ISO to it using a library computer?
I never go to Linebaugh anymore.
and I don't think they'd allow me to use torrents on the city network.
they might suspect me of piracy.
Who says you have to torrent?
and being 28, I'd get booked.
Heck, you could pre-download it on your phone.
I don't have a smartphone.
02:38
Wait so which computer are you using now?
money saving...
Which computer are you using now?
on the exact machine in question. using trisquel 7.0 GNU/Linux Live build cusomized for free software foundation associate members.
Ah. Do you have 2 spare USB drives handy?
yes but I already tried copying the ISO file. errors like input/output error and stuff.
in Transmission, the torrent client.
02:43
I suggest you download the ISO using normal HTTP (no torrents) to one USB drive, and then after the download completes use dd to write it to the other.
@AdamTheChespin --^
are you still trying to download the ISO?
The 32 bit one is what I need and that one is torrent only.
try and launch damnsmalllinux
@AdamTheChespin Not true. Here's the link releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-i386.iso
@AdamTheChespin It might take a while to download, but that link will work --^
03:03
not gonna work. defaults to flash memory.
so I'm sunk.
Nope. You can tell the browser to ask you where to save it.
Just Google for how to set the download location in whatever browser you use @AdamTheChespin
03:17
it insta failed when I tried.

@terdon ban me from U&L lol, I'm procrastinating from studying for finals by answering questions there now
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy There are better ways of procrastinating.
Try taking up lockpicking, for example.
@AndroidDev hi
@KazWolfe I should at some point, or at least start learning pentesting stuff. But I keep feeding my U&L and AU addiction
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy you can get kits for really cheap, actually.
WOOOO, two accepts in last 15 mins !!!
One OP came back from like January and accepted, the other was done in 7 mins, with sed
sigh . . .how in the bloody heck I can play with regex but I can't figure out calculus stuff for electromagnetic fields ?
06:39
because calculus is hard.
calculus is waaay harder than regex
Yeah, I guess that wasn't exactly fair comparison

@AndroidDev pretty much yes
Wow. 11 spam posts?
Yikes!

Battery charging. I doubt that has anything to do with the OS.
Doesn't that happen directly from power to battery?
They meant battery drain \o/
Soem batteries have a poor consistency... they drain by themselves and can't be charged full.

Q: What is a Work in Progress Answer?

Sumeet DeshmukhI've posted a Question about thumbnailers and even found a half baked answer, the answer that doesn't work, and then I updated my question with the half baked answer that I found asking to fix the answer for my needs (newer nautilus version), but I received a comment saying make that an answe...

@Rinzwind is my assumption correct?
A better approach would be to edit your question and include the "update" as though you had written it this way from the beginning. As it stands, it really isn't very clear which is why @Rinzwind suggested you post an answer: presumably, he thought the script did work at least partially. So, just rewrite this so that i) you state the problem and ii) the solution you have so far and iii) exactly what more you need. How does it work and how does it fail? — terdon ♦ 4 mins ago
I don't want to put words in your mouth.
16:26
Morning y'all.
kernel 4.11 is out now
Wat.
AMD hasn't even got support for 4.10 working yet.
well, amd is behind.
user136984
Intel rules. >:P
Counter: IME
16:37
Intel is all fine and dandy but their cards have no muscle.
Try using their GPU for OpenCL - yeah, it doesn't do much.
also, i have a whole list of complaints against intel not wanting to work with my computer.
also, @ParanoidPanda. I'm shocked that you like them. They pretty much force you to install proprietary blobs on your computer. You have no idea what those blobs are capable of doing.
I don't even have Intel on this machine. The CPU is an AMD A8-5600K APU.
user136984
@KazWolfe: I've just been stuck with Intel, that's all. :P
(It has a built-in Radeon HD 7560D.)
user136984
I would probably prefer NVIDIA.
16:40
And that's even worse.
user136984
Ok, I don't know then.
user136984
What do you suggest?
NVIDIA on windows does all sorts of "diagnostic" telemetry regarding their system.
Who knows what they're doing on Linux?
At least AMD has better open-source driver support.
Even if UnrealEngine manages to hard-reset the PC.
Does anyone know how to force GitHub to refresh its cache and show a recently pushed change in the pull request branch comparison page? The change is in both branches (and I can see it in both if I open each individualy on GitHub) but the PR page is only showing it in one.
@terdon It should automatically refresh.
I assume it's some sort of caching thing but would rather not have to wait 6-8 weeks :(
@NathanOsman I know. It always has before.
I've never noticed a delay between pushing and the page being updated after hitting F5.
@terdon Maybe site issues?
It's not normal.
@NathanOsman The weird thing is that it is shown in the branch itself, just not on the PR
Sounds like a glitch to me.
16:42
I tried F5, shift+F5, deleting the PR and recreating it, nothing.
user136984
Initiating Orbital Bombardment on this Windows question. >:)
Done.
user136984
Excellent! Muhahaha!!! >:D
I have the feeling that some specific mod is having a bad influence on you...
16:49
Guys.
I have an EC2 instance expiring.
It is running Windows Server 2012 R2.
And I want to say goodbye to it - with an experiment.
So.
Send me your suggestions with the best way to... er... part ways with the VM :D
Tell me something you've always wanted to do with a Windows Server VM but couldn't.
You could run that MBR erasing program I made a while back :D
@ByteCommander Said specific mod is also having a good influence on others, so it must just be the influincee.
delete system32/
@NathanOsman You could disable the firewall and open all the ports and see how long it takes to get compromised.
also interesting...
16:53
@AndroidDev I wonder if AWS would appreciate that though.
@NathanOsman They would not.
I don't want my account blacklisted.
True
@NathanOsman How do you like the renders by the way?
They are great.
Thanks again.
Isn't this just a rant? the "answer" seems additional to the question...
16:57
@NathanOsman No problem :) If you want to make additional ones yourself, you just have to get your hands on the stock PSDs and then stretch the corners of the screenshot to match the screen.

user136984
Ubunutu! :D
Is that a new one?
Lol.
It is not.
@NathanOsman Just curious but why would you prefer a Windows server to a Linux server?
I mean, having a GUI is nice,
but isn't Windows more vulnerable?
17:27
CI and code building on native platforms.
^--- this
I have all kinds of Linux servers but I must have at least one Windows server in order to use Visual Studio for CI.
The one in question is being decommissioned though.
(I have a newer one running elsewhere.)
AWS does a decent job of locking things down. Their firewall blocks all ports except RDP initially.
Ah. Quick question - I was actually thinking about setting up an LXDE RDP to my Ubuntu EC2 instance so I don't have to use the command line for everything, but all the docs say I have to enable password auth. I don't want to do that, I want to keep key auth.
Can I keep key auth and use RDP?
Not that I'm aware of.
Unfortunately.
no.
RDP isn't aware of keys.
17:33
You could probably tunnel it though.
Isn't that a huge security hole?
Yes, RDP is a huge security hole.
@KazWolfe Well, as much as any password-based authentication mechanism.
Although, I could tell AWS to block RDP unless it's from my public IP, no?
You can do that, yes.
17:34
And my IP hasn't changed in 5 years
That's pretty static :D
(IPv4 too)
I'm not complaining :D
And the to get a "static" IP is extra too
I have a record set up (home.quickmediasolutions.com) that always points to my public IP address.
And a shortened form h.qms.li as well.
That way I don't have to constantly memorize new IP addresses.
Whoa.
That tells us something.
Anyone wanna buy stock? :P

@KazWolfe An announcement that affects Ubuntu is not an abuse IMHO.
Rather, I believe these are exactly what pins are for.

Ah. How come it isn't in our meme catalogue then? :P
@NathanOsman i am lazy
18:11
@terdon yes. I thought it would become messy with that script in the q
