/me wants to become more active in the Ubuntu community.
I have tons of free time on my hands and want to put it towards something productive.
I went to the Microsoft Store today and had Windows 8 demoed to me and a few others.
And there were buisnessmen whose response was pretty much "WHAT THE HECK IS THIS CRAP?"
(they used a worse word then crap)
So, as soon as Windows 8 comes out people are gonna be really mad at microsoft.
And that is Ubuntu's time to shine.

@MarcoCeppi Is it possible to use Django or Cherrypy with ondina?
By 12.10, Ubuntu has to be user-friendly enough that people have an easier time switching from Windows 7 to Ubuntu then from 7 to 8.
And I want to do whatever is in my power to help contribute towards that goal.
So, where do I start?
I've done some with SE, and technical support is good, but the Developer Community is where the real action happens,

@William Yeah, I know.

But like I said - the important thing is that it is there for the next guy who has the problem.
@DoR Yes, it's possible. We'll have a blog post this week about how to setup Django with Ondina

@AmithKK see ya
btw currrently making class blog
@DoR We'll also be adding a one-click install for Django to the control panel
@MarcoCeppi Woooo!
@MarcoCeppi: Any more invitations coming?
We've got to fix a few more bugs. Optimistically, we'll have another batch of invites by the end of the week
@MarcoCeppi Also, another question - will I be able to use my Ondina account as a remote Bazaar (or Git) server?
@GeorgeEdison yes, we're building tools to make it easier to administer remote repositories. Right now there's no real interface for it other than you uploading and setting up your own infrastructure

Ah, okay.

base classname, splitter, and after text should all be configurable per request.

ergo no more whitespace issue.
Hum, I'll just trust you on that one.

I should probably do that.
@OctavianDamiean it's really not that bad. I also need to put all of the sizzle calls into a single generic 'collect elements' function or something. that way you can easily pop it out and dump in your own selector engine (or none at all)

update your package list. not 100% sure how to do it in synaptic though

any idea where to look for it
jrg

let me install synaptic and check for you.
or you could run this in a terminal, then try to install your package:
> sudo apt-get update
To do that in synaptic, click the "reload" button:
and one more thing i wanted to ask ? wat is the difference between -devel packages and without -devel? like libgd and libgd-devel. both contain source code right?
jrg
jrg
the -devel (or -dev, depending on the package) are the development headers - so if you're compiling something, you probably need the -devel/-dev package for the dependencies.
@jrg when i hit reload it starts downloading package information and starts downloading 68 files but when i looked at individual files most of them failed

I suggest you ask on the site, unless you're running 12.04, in which case you need to file a bug

@jrg i mean there is stuff like this mygeekopinions.blogspot.com/2011/07/… but nothing standard
right now I have the option to switch between ambiance and adwarta and radiance
are those gnome3 themes?
i guess if I install a whole bunch of gnome3 themes then they will show up in my theme switcher huh?
Ok, plan for today. 1) Work on vlettering demos, 2) write an email to Github to ask for permission to use their logo for the lens and 3) do some more research for the new Unity lens and scope. :)
jrg

Anyone got any idea why a simple hello world C++ program wouldn't (when compiled on a Arch system) run on Ubuntu, but when compiled on Ubuntu (same makefile) would run on the Arch?

Thought maybe because Arch is using a later GCC version, but binary is binary in the end :|
This should not be the reason but did you try it without the O flags yet?
Just to exclude that possibility.
No, that would be my next attempt, but my friend (whom I was doing this with) has gone to sleep :P (2:32am)

Can anyone here offer me some advice. I'm tearing my hair out - actually, I think I've torn all my hair out...
I really very much do not want to go back to Windows but Ubuntu is crashing so often and I keep losing work several times a day
I've filed a bug at Launchpad but not much has happened over the past week or so
Which Ubuntu version do you use?
11.10
With Unity
15:52
Mhmm.
Post the link to the bug report please.
Ubuntu 11.10 crashes on an almost daily basis, and I'm doing various different things when it does so, so I can't easily identify what's to blame. Sometimes it happens when I'm in Firefox, sometimes Thunderbird, sometimes in a Virtualbox machine running Windows Xp. But it always happens the same way: it goes instantaneously to the black screen of death (which looks like a logout) and thence to the login screen. My Xorg.0.log.old has the following entries at the end of the log after every crash: [ 1214.793] Segmentation fault at address 0xb2536008 [ 1214.793] Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting [ 1214.793] Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help. Undecided / Incomplete
@rinzwind where are you :D - when you get this please add your comment to the cpu time question as an answer, and hopefully the grace period for the bounty won't have ended. this is pretty much what I want, in conjunction with process accounting it's the best answer so far - if you can write a complete answer for that
This may sound stupid but what input devices do you use?
When I ran x-diagnose the bug became:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/944626?comments=all
It doesn't sound stupid at all. I use a wireless mouse and keyboard and a wacom tablet
Ah, a wireless mouse.
15:55
Is that often problematical?
Wireless using Bluetooth technology?
I'm not sure. I replaced the wireless mouse yesterday with a new one: a Logitech Anywhere MX. And I'm still getting crashes.
Or let's ask it this way, what kind of wireless adapter do you use on your computer?
Ah, so it is the original Logitech wireless adapter I guess.
It's a USB dongle
Be right back.
15:58
Thanks!
16:10
Back.
I was asking wireless stuff because I have experienced that problem with my Magic Trackpad which uses Bluetooth. It was the Bluetooth adapter that didn't play nice and caused the crashes.
I've replaced it with another adapter and it worked.
Not sure if that could be your problem though.
@OctavianDamiean this is why I need someone else to make the demo's :P
Man that looks awesome!
Thanks but the keyboard and mouse are using usb
jrg

@OctavianDamiean yup - actually looks ok with a name there. jsfiddle.net/rlemon/b2Gmr/embedded/result
@OctavianDamiean - when I first installed 11.10 a while back I don't think it crashed like it's doing now. Would a re-install of Ubuntu help, do you think?
@OctavianDamiean see what you can do with that\
16:30
@dunderhead I can't really tell. Depends on the problem. If it is a bug introduced by an update then not really.
Thanks. Of course. I didn't think of that.
A recent kernel update broke Wacom, and then the next one seemed to fix it
Perhaps I should try an old kernel version?
Or is that not a good idea from a security point of view?
jrg
jrg
Most of the security patches kernel level are uh, shall we say "really rare edge cases".
so you should be fine, however you need to know that you aren't as well protected as you would be normally.
thanks jrg - I could always log into the newer kernel for a security session
btw, I would have helped with your earlier post if I could, but I'm afraid I didn't understand it!
